Title: Football Thread: Brought back popular demand!
Post by: Aki-at on September 04, 2013, 09:17:20 am
Arsenal break their transfer record and pay more than Manchester City or United ever has (Only Chelsea surpass us with a £50 million transfer for Torres that amounted to like 6 goals)

Manchester United are in complete shambles and somewhere in England Nameless' current reaction is like;

Real Madrid are still insane and live in some alternate reality.

Guardiola still continues to hunt Mourinho's nightmares.

I think that's the major news covered! My personal hope is with the purchase of Ozil Arsenal can win a trophy, let's do it boys!

Not a huge soccer fan, hockey is definitely my sport, but i do enjoy watching it every once in a while. I follow L.A. Galaxy from time to time as well. One of the more recent big deals in the MLS was Dempsey's trade to Seattle Sounders.

I did not know Dempsey had left Premier League.

Well, I'm excited to watch UEFA's CL games this month.

Ozil has only played for us once and we're already top of the league.

My only worry is our defence. It's actually a pretty solid one looking back at it from last season, but Koscielny really needs to cut out his rash challenges.

^Arsenal and Tottenham together at the top. Great sight :p
Hope that Liverpool loses tomorrow so that things keep interesting. Maybe this can be Arsenal's year.

Meanwhile in Portugal:
Porto is still alone in the lead, and by the looks of it, it will stay that way until the end.
Sporting is in great form, I'm excited to see Porto/Sporting play, I think Porto's stronger tho. And Benfica is still in the shitter. Last time Benfica had a clean sheet was well into last season!!

European football approaches, Porto and Benfica have easy matches, Austria Wien and Anderlecht respectively. It's obligatory to win.

Tonight's Football Trivia:
Last time Porto played in the Ernst-Happel-Stadion (Ausrtia Wien's home ground) for the top European competition was in the 1987 European Cup Final against Bayern Munich, won with the crucial help of Madjer's magical backheel.
It was Porto's first international success, followed by Porto's only European SuperCup and the first Intercontinental Cup.

Somewhere in England? Somewhere in Manchester haha, but yeah...although United were so lucky against Crystal Palace. (actually, I was in London when I heard Man United lost the last match)

Ozil to score more than Torres, it's too bad those odds aren't great since it's bound to happen.

I think Liverpool at the top would be a tragedy...would rather have Arsenal, Tottenham or even Chelsea (god forbid) there right now.

Everton are doing surprisingly well so far, and beat Chelsea.

This is Martinez when they won:

1. Tottenham (given how many players tat came through)
2. Man City
3. Chelsea
4. Arsenal
5. Man United

One where Moyes sacked Fergie's underlings.

Hmmm....should I bet on Tottenham or Arsenal winning the title AND Man United not achieving Top 4 Success?

5 points clear! Now Tottenham to be humiliated by Everton and this would be a good weekend.

Tough week ahead for Arsenal still, with Dortmund, United and Southampton, hopefully we can get 3 points in all of those games.

The worry for Arsenal fans is if they can keep this up in the second half of the season.

Usually, Arsenal start off well and then somehow lose the lead...so I wonder if Ozil really will make that difference to the whole team's mentality of staying strong...

Just as long as United don't get into the top 4, I don't honestly care who wins the League this year....City have been pretty bad at the back to say we deserve the title.

I still think Arsenal and Tottenham are the teams to beat this year.

We are friends! I actually didn't watch the match as I was too poorly (I also overslept).

The game was good on both sides, although City did look weak on occasion. I still believe Arsenal are the ones who will win the title.

City and Sunderland in the Final.

United really are awful this season, having missed a total of 4 Penalties out of 5 whilst Sunderland managed to get 2 Shots in the Net out of 5.

Awful, awful United...and I fear City will do what they did in the FA Cup and mess it up against Sunderland, the bogie team.

After being thrashed by Chelsea, I want Arsenal to win the League if City don't.

I really didn't like Mourinho's attitude lately regarding how other teams should play against Chelsea but uses sly tactics against City (yes, they won, tbut I felt like Chelsea bullied some City players off the ball).

I'm not sore about the loss, far from it. If it were any other team, I'd be okay with it (Except United), but Chelsea played for a draw, and didn't play "football" so to speak...just holding back until they could counter attack.

"19th Century Football", if West Ham played that, then Chelsea played "Italian Football", which is just boring to watch.

Seriously, if Chelsea win the Title from using this sly tactic, then I personally want Chelsea to lose in every Tournament from now on.

So Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham...whoever still faces Chelsea I want to win by default. So pissed at Morinho's comments before and after the game and the joke that is called "British" Media parading that Chelsea deserved to win and City won't ever win the League. (this same media who seems to love defending John Terry's personal life that any one of us could be arrested or attacked for, and yes, I don't like Balotelli's time at the spotlight for City either. Just so I don't look like I am Anti "Chelski")

Anyway, I don't mind if Arsenal, Liverpool or Tottenham win this year....just don't let Chelsea win it. D:<

I can take one thrashing a season, two however dampens the mood.

I should be saying the same too you! Your team is the one filled with all that great attacking play. Of course if Everton helps us out on Tuesday and we beat Manchester United then the game is back on!

(Not hopeful though, was expecting a bad result today but this is just terrible, I did not expect such a bad performance as this, it's the Arsenal from 2009 all over again)

I really really really hope Mourinho does not win the league, I cannot bear Chelsea winning another title considering just how the club acts and that of it's staff.

True, Liverpool just came out running the other day...and I was wondering why Arsenal let 4 in within 20 minutes.

I am one of those fans who will slate City if they lose by a goal. I guess I am pessimistic, but I tend to enjoy stressing on my team sometimes. However, Chelsea were the one team I wanted City to beat.

Just unlucky I guess, Arsenal just need to beat Man United now to get back into it, and keep those Reds at bay from the top 4!

We share the same goal, we both don't want Chelski winning the title. Not sure I want Liverpool to win either....I guess you could say that's like Tottenham winning the league for you.

Seen that Arsene picture before, I believe it's fake? (was told this, not 100% sure myself)

Actually I have sympathy for the Arsenal.
I just think Wenger is a joke. As Mou once said, a 'failure specialist' (http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/jose-mourinho-arsene-wenger-is-a-specialist-in-failure-9128898.html).

I don't think it's fair to really lambast at Wenger, he is a good to excellent manager (But not quite great anymore) and his record shows it considering his average transfer budget at Arsenal between 2005 - 2012ish was around £10 - £15 million excluding player sales. However he loses out to managers like Mourinho or Ferguson because he opts for a less tactical gameplay, instead believing his players are good enough to beat any opponent regardless the way they've been set up and is quite attack minded. He certainly has lost it compared to his younger days where he was schooling teams like Chelsea and consistently getting one over old Ferguson but c'est la vie, his prowess  has declined much like Yu Suzuki.

And hey, I'd rather have a failure specialist than a specialist in being a cunt and having a racist bastard as his captain. But that's just me.

For that I hope Manchester City wins the league, you can take the points off of us Nameless as long as you guys beat Everton for us!

Please don't beat us badly though :' (

Hmmm, I am still doubtful given City's history of messing things up.

If we do beat you, I can see Wenger focusing on the FA Cup game to beat Wigan and get into the Final, hopefully...but the last time Arsenal were in a cup final...Birmingham won by some miracle!

Either way, I can still see Chelsea winning the League for some reason. Mourinho will use every trick in the book to play mind games on City's opponents. He insulted Wenger, and I think it's because of this game coming up!

United won against Villa (grrrr), but I feel sorry for Moyes (which is odd as I hated him at Everton), the United faithful don't tend to be very patient. "We've given him a season", they say but Fergie had 5 before winning a cup. I guess they're not used to being the whipping boys of the PL.

Either way, I wouldn't mind if Arsenal beat City, at least Wenger's not insulted City like Mourinho has.

Ugh, I don't want Liverpool winning it, but I guess that's what happens when all 3 of the "top 4" are focusing solely on each other.

Happy with the Arsenal result, it means that both teams will work harder in the remaining games. Surely, it means that Arsenal will win their first trophy in almost a decade?

Kind of sad yet ironic to see that between Arsenal's last Trophy win (FA Cup), the likes of Liverpool, Swansea, Birmingham, Wigan, City, Tottenham and Portsmouth have won something.

Still, doubt anyone can match Arsenal's 2004 "Invincible" record.

If Arsenal don't win Wigan, I wouldn't doubt Wigan winning it (FA Cup) again.

Barcelona's transfer ban has been put on hold for now. Liverpool promising to buy big and Manchester United are going to try hard to ensure their new man gets the players he wants.

Add Real Madrid, Manchester City, Arsenal, PSG and Chelsea, we could be seeing the busiest transfer window ever... Surely we have to see some nasty ramification sooner rather than later?

Depends who's injured at the end of the season. I personally felt that Hull didn't try against Arsenal as they were thinking about the Cup game...and possibly to see who gets played in the Final.

I honestly think Arsenal will win it by the skin of their teeth ala the Wigan game (penalties, Arsenal win by 5 to 4 on Penalities).

Arsene's Legacy will at least ensure that he did a great job for Arsenal. I wonder who will fill his shoes? Gus Hiddick (?) seems like a good choice for Arsenal. I'd definitely have him as someone who could turn Arsenal's fortunes around.

WHAT!?! That's fucking bullshit! Typical UEFA bias...I swear if it were any of our teams...they'd stick with it. Barcelona have done something wrong, and they should pay the price!

Regarding Liverpool, even if they do win the League, I don't think they'd buy that many big players (they are likely to bargain hunt for the players who will play for the club and not for the money), City shouldn't need to spend much again, but given our defence....I think that needs strengthening. United are shitting themselves due to the loss of shares and position in the league...I don't think they can afford to spend big and not retain their position in the Top 4 I think. Not to say that they won't, but these times are crucial for United...Arsenal on the other hand have the money to spend, we just need to wait and see on Wenger's position.

Regarding Chelsea, they probably are going to spend the most this year, since their stars are getting old (except the ones Di Matteo brought in), so Torres, Terry (good ridddance), Lampard, Eto'o, Demba Ba etc will be gone.

No clue on PSG's position in players, I am guessing they will because they can (like City), although I guess they need some improvements to further themselves in the French League and Champions League.

Now, my gut instinct says that Pelligrini may get the sack. I don't know why...but he hasn't really resonated with the fans yet, but the players love him, so I can't honestly say...but despite Mancini's arguments with the players, the fans loved his passion, and it was a shame to lose him. Peligrini definitely brings stability to the players, but I haven't felt like the players have been as consistent this season (well...I could say that under Mancini too, but we never let many goals in), like we score loads of goals, sure...but we let in a lot too, which I see as the biggest problem in a Title Charge.

Anyway, I hope Arsenal win the FA Cup at least. It'd be nice to see them win after a nearly 10 year absence in winning anything. It'd also be nice farewell to Wenger.

On paper you'd have to say these groups of players can win it, but same should have been true of vs Birmingham so I'm firmly keeping my mouth shut on what happens in the final.

Pep Guardiola of course! ... Not likely but I can dream can't I? :(

(Of course Pep will probably come to the Premier League sooner rather than later if only to continue to traumatise Mourinho.)

Well after today's series of events I am firmly behind Manchester City to win the league and hope you guys can stick at it. I just cannot bear to see Liverpool get it considering how smug their fans will become and Chelsea are just too classless and cuntish bunch for me to ever hope them to win.

On paper you'd have to say these groups of players can win it, but same should have been true of vs Birmingham so I'm firmly keeping my mouth shut on what happens in the final.

Indeed. Arsenal certainly have the better squad of the two, but given that even City lost a final to the likes of Wigan. I'd say it could go either way.

Pep Guardiola of course! ... Not likely but I can dream can't I? :(

(Of course Pep will probably come to the Premier League sooner rather than later if only to continue to traumatise Mourinho.)

I'm unsure he'd go to Arsenal. As my brother believes he seems to move to clubs that are already winning trophies (Barcelona to Bayern), but I guess he'd go for the sake of becoming the hero if he wins trophies for arsenal.

Well after today's series of events I am firmly behind Manchester City to win the league and hope you guys can stick at it. I just cannot bear to see Liverpool get it considering how smug their fans will become and Chelsea are just too classless and cuntish bunch for me to ever hope them to win.

Thanks for your backing. Although it could go either way.

Personally...I wouldn't mind Liverpool winning it as it's 25 years since the Hillsborough Disaster (it could be destiny). If it were any other year I would definitely agree with you that the fans are pretty smug and go on and on about their old glories.

Chelsea...I hope they don't win it...but given that if City and Liverpool slip and Chelsea don't. They are still in the running despite Mourinho's "We're out" motto.

I watched both matches on Sunday and was sort of happy that Chelsea won, as it meant that City are in the Title Race again...but I was also disappointed as it meant that I had to support a Team I hate to get City in the running.

If we win on Goal Difference again, we'll never live it down with the United fans who will claim we can't win "legitly" (ie: Points). I honestly don't care how we win it, but it'll certainly give City fans grief for spending big and achieving the Title by luck.

Happy to see John Terry not make a Final for another year!

Seems that City could NOT be in the Champions League in a few years due to the Financial Fair Play rule.

Now, I don't mind if City aren't in it due to the unfair way of spending into the Competition, but I know UEFA will let the likes of Real Madrid, Paris St Germain, etc will get away with it as they're not "English". Chelsea will likely suffer too. Who can forget Liverpool getting the whole English Teams banned in the 80s? I can't exactly blame Liverpool for that disaster, but UEFA claimed it was Liverpool fans and not the other team's fans, and assumed we're all like that...so yeah.

I am VERY excited for the Everton game! Even if we don't win, at least we can say that we tried.

If we don't try, then I will be disappointed.

Liverpool dropped the ball really hard this season. Ever since Arsenal left 1st place I said Man City would win it. Chelsea never had nothing going for the title, and Liverpool is just too damn inconsistent.

It's been like football Game of Thrones this season

As a City fan, I leave NOTHING to chance, given 2 years ago. It all comes down to whether Joe Hart has an off day or not. That says a lot about my confidence in the team, lol.

If we lose, I can't see Liverpool slipping up again personally.

I think City will win it, but I am guessing it will be a very close scoreline (3-2).

The Spanish league will be set for an exciting conclusion if both Barcelona and Atletico win their games and then face each other the following weak. Barcelona win and they win the league, Madrid vice versa.

Perhaps saying "first FA Cup Trophy" is incorrect, I meant their first cup after almost a decade. The FA Cup was the last thing Arsenal won before going trophyless, so perhaps you can start winning trophies again, starting from the FA Cup!

So are you guys excited for the World Cup? We did some sweepstates today, and I got Holland and Ivory Coast...so I hope they win it to win some money.

One has specialised in failure this season.

THE END.

Bonus picture time, Arsene has a good body for a 65 year old geezer.

Anyway World Cup soon, hope Portugal win it so the Portuguese FA can pay clubs what they owe them ;D

You have to admit that Arsenal were so so lucky in getting back 3 goals after being 2-0 within 10 minutes.

I honestly thought Arsenal weren't going to win it, but congrats on the Win Aki-At!

Now the real challenge begins!

And Liverpool are the specialists in failure! Mourinho is just bruised by having a blank trophy cabinet.

No way man. No Quaresma, no World Cup.

It's not that Quaresma would make such a huge difference. But Paulo Bento has shown everyone that there are financial interests behind the team's decisions. And when money is what drives a team forward, they don't win.

So looks like Cesc is going to Chelsea. Arsenal, being the incredibly cheapskates that we've become over the last 10 years, have opted out of buying him because we don't need an attacking midfielder.

Phew! It's not like we had our two best midfielders (Ramsey and Ozil) injured at one point that completely derailed our season.

Oh wait...

This is such an massive stupid mistake to make and I don't fill confident of Arsenal's future to attain major trophies. Already I'm hearing "If the deal is right, we'll get a player in a position we need" "The boss needs to juggle the budget" and before season ticket renewals? "Please expect a big summer"

Fuck that, never trusting these PR men again especially after they had £100 mil in the bank and YET rising ticket prices. We've just ensured Chelsea will be title winners for 2014/15, fantastic work from everyone at Arsenal.

First Match: Brazil vs Croatia

Results: 3-1

Thoughts: Besides the full control of the match by the Brazil Team, the match was really controversial with that fault that became penalty kick (sure, it was "real" :) ) and the own goal by Marcelo.

Overall, Croatia also has really good players without count Modric :). That's a nice goalkeeper, Croatia, keep'em up.

Damn I was expecting Spain to take out Chile, but I guess I was mistaken.

But then again... I kinda knew this was going to happen. You see as impressive as Spain was in the last three tournaments, you have to take into account that they never really switched out their tactics, Bel Bosque figured that possession football was going to keep them invincible and for a while that seemed to be true.

But... sooner or later, the oppossing teams would figue out how to outplay them and it happenned at this tournament. Holland smacked them like there was no tommorrow and Chile got over their tactics pretty quickly. I laughed when I saw Spain finally doing their little flurry of passes that were just worthless at the 90 minute mark.

Now having said that, I am a little concerned over our chances with the US, that last game with Germany didn't go well. I just want Portugal to make good.

I was talking to another soccer buddy today and what he said made a whole lot of sense. And it's something that definately needs to addressed internally. So here's the jist of it

Yes, Cristiano Ronaldo is arguably the most popular player which is both good, but it's also bad for him and for his teammates. Because the spotlight is so much on him that it creates an inferiority complex towards the other players. And it also puts an unnecessary strain on Cristiano himself.

If you have a good shot, then take it. Don't pass it to Ronaldo thinking that he has to be the star of the whole show and somehow walk on water to score a goal.

Bento and especially the Portuguese federation, for God's sake, lockdown everything. No public practices, everybody is on the same level. Or keep this mind: we are all at the same level.

I wish I could slap every member of our team in a row as soon as they exited the airport.  It was an easy match to watch.

OK, Portugal scored early, but God Damn it, the US was getting bolder by the minute. Howard made some pretty good saves. And Portugal was doing a good second half. But as time went on, I felt like my players were getting a little confortable and slacking off. Hence why the US managed to draw. When you start direspecting your opponent, things just go bad.

When they scored the second goal, I literally walked out of my room and sat in kitchen for a good 10 minutes. Then came back, I decided to check my e-mails, plannin' my work schedule early.

Then we just barely managed the draw, which a great goal from Varela. But...

Seriously... SERIOUSLY? For a while I thought Portugal was going to improve their game, but sadly, looking at the big picture, drastic changes are needed. And fast.

Suarez really is a scummy footballer. Assaulting three different players and provoking another one simply for the colour of his skin (And there is that whole issue with Ghana but I think we can all agree racist and violent behaviour is leagues worse than blatant cheating)

Hope FIFA comes down hard on him, neither his manager nor his teammates are covering themselves in glory during this whole saga either.

You guys ought to be happy that Ghana has lost two of their best players. Muntari hulking out.

Quote
Sulley Muntari added another dreadful page to his book of shame at international level after a verbal and physical confrontation with Black Stars management committee member Moses Parker that is likely to end his international career.

The AC Milan midfielder who was at the forefront of player agitation for their appearance fees to be paid before their game against Portugal that resulted in a training boycott took his protest a step further by engaging Parker in a physical confrontation that got so intensive the security at  the Brasilia Palace where the team was staying had to intervene.

Muntari squared off against the Medeama SC owner and Black Stars management committee member at a meeting between the players and management where both men exchanged punches before storming Parker’s room where he smashed a MacBook Pro, destroyed phones and property in the room at the Brasilia Palace Hotel the official was staying.

Parker was all along held up on the balcony of the room, protected from the raw rage and anger of the player by other players and officials.

The confrontation begun around 11.30 PM on the first night of the team’s stay in Brasilia ahead of their Group G game against Portugal. The players had demanded a meeting with management as the row over their appearance fees gathered steam. With the meeting set to begin, Muntari asked Parker to leave as he asked GFA president who he was.

An exchange of words ensued with Muntari reportedly telling Parker something along the lines of “if you people make small coins you think you have money so you can talk to us anyhow.” Muntari then threw a first punch, Parker retaliated hitting the Milan star and drawing blood in the process.

The meeting room with management members and players all in attendance had become utterly chaotic as security officials and players attempted to hold back both men. Some officials took Parker up to his room on the second floor of the hotel while others blocked the door so Muntari will not follow up. So charged up was Muntari that he floored at least two security men detailed to the team, brushed off Felix Ansong and pushed all before him.

Soon he was up in Parker’s room on the second floor of the hotel located within striking distance of the official residence of Brazil’s president but other officials had locked up Parker on the balcony to prevent further confrontation. An incensed Muntari then went on a rampage destroying as much as he could in sight in the process. In the end it took center back Jonathan Mensah’s strength to be able to hold the Milan star back on what is easily one of the most shameful nights in Ghana football.

The player was not done though and threatened to have a physical go at Parker anytime he met him in the hotel, forcing Parker to relocate to a nearby hotel.

NED vs ARG: Great first half time for my team.

The situation is in balance and we make more offensive moves with results.

GO Celeste y Blanca! :D

Bummer. Was kinda expecting Holland to make it to the finals. Guess not. Things just got a little more interesting. But man, Argentina making it to the finals on Brazil's World Cup is like adding insult to injury after the 7-1 match.

LET'S GOOOOOO, ARGENTINA!

After 24 years, we made it to the finals, yeah!!!!!!!!!!

Now, it's payback time for us to beat the germans.
Just like the 90 Italia World Cup....man, I love this generation of football :_)

Argentina vs Germany final!

Yes just what I wanted. Apologises to all my Dutch friends, your team gave a good account of themselves considering what everyone was thinking pre-tournament.

Now for Ozil to rise like a phoenix.

Yup holland got a long way but argentina won fair en square. Actually I ended up not caring so much because Penalties twice was already telling. Finales are gonna be interesting. When was the last time germany won a wc?

The last time they won the World Cup was in 1990. The best result they had so far was third place in 2010.

But Ozil's Muslim.

Support your brother in his time of need!!!!

Seriously though for me no team so deserves the World Title more than Germany. Have been incredibly consistent and this was their fourth semi-final in a row!

However no player deserves a World Cup medal more than Messi. It'll remove those stupid comments about him not being one of the best because he never won a World Cup. Also their coach has some great reactions for GIF.

So either way fairly happy with whoever wins the World Cup.

Again, i'm definitely rooting for Argentina. I'll agree that Germany definitely deserves to Win, but so does Messi. If that doesn't shut the doubters up i don't know what will.

Arsenal signed Sanchez!

I take everything back what I said of the Arsenal board, I thought they were being money greedy all this time and Wenger lost his magic. Turns out he had to manage the budget like a poor man and now we enter the era of no financial constraint.

Well done to Arsene, I doubt any other manager would have taken us through such difficult time yet time and time again he found a way. What a time to be an Arsenal fan.

For lulz was supposed to mean "to troll aki"... Nah, but seriously tho I just side with the unexpected. So I expect germany to win as well. And yup our akhi osil deserves it. Never realised how close your nickname comes to akhi untill now lol.

Oh, my voice with that shoot from Higuain that was off-side. :X

Great first half. My Team are really pushing forward and work the 120% in the oportunities.

The germans have had the most control of the ball but they haven't do much shoots.

Overall, I'm excited like never before. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ARGENTINA!!!! :D :D :D

Yeah the calls have been pretty bad. That clear foul by the German goalkeeper on an Argentine was ridiculous.

Congratulations to Germany, they played some great football but Neuer is crazy. Is there a requirement about being mentally insane if you want to play as a goalie for Germany?

Sad for Argentina and Messi in particular. The amount of chances they created... They ought to have been 2 nil up.

Anyway enough about this boring international football. The true season is drawing upon us and it will be legendary.

Become an Arsenal fan. We have a long running history of tragedy but yet return like the phoenix every time it seems we are going to fall into oblivion.

Also we score goals like this;

Anyone else anxious for the return of club football? These national qualification breaks are dumb.

Here in Portugal we having cup football this weekend. Porto v Sporting in a very early cup round and three weeks after a heated affair at Sporting's house that ended in 1-1. A draw that felt insufficient for both clubs as the winning goal teased the fans until the final whistle.
This time only one can go through, and surely all grudges will be settled at the Dragão.
