Title: Good RPG for Dreamcast?
Post by: Wilhelm on January 04, 2011, 06:45:53 pm
I need a good rpg for the dreamcast, currently I got my hands on Time Stalkers & Evolution both nice, but I'm just not feeling em yet you know? And I got PSO. But I overplay that...

SO anyways I need a suggestion for a new RolePlaying Game!

Action or Turn Based, doesn't matter.

HELP!!! ME!!!

and I know about SKies of Arcadia and Grandia 2, don't list those lol.
Those are Last Resorts cause they're great and I wanna use em when I get a week off to do just much playing.

Well those 2 unfortunately are the best.

Haven't played any other RPG on the system.
I am sure you already played PSO.

Cube's right.

The reason those two get mentioned the most isn't just that they're great. It's that they're the only really good RPG's on the system. The Dreamcast was never really the best system for RPGs.

Segagaga's supposed to be good. It's only available in Japanese though. I've got a copy of it, but haven't really made the time commitment to play it through with a guide handy the whole time.

Even though you said not to mention it, Grandia II. I still think it's one of, if not the best battle systems out there. The Dreamcast version's also the best one around.

Try Record of Lodoss War & Silver.

Maybe give Evolution 2 a try? I'd assume it's slightly better than 1.

Also, I second Record of Lodoss war. But yeah, the Dreamcast didn't have too many RPGs. Though the ones it DID have were awesome!

Dreamcast would be one of the worst game platforms ever for RPGs, but as pointed out before, Skies of Arcadia and Grandia II are seriously some of the best in the industry. Absolutely fantastic games.

For more action oriented RPGs, there is of course Phantasy Star Online, which if you want to play online you should just get the PC version with way more content. Star Platinum pointed out Record of Lodoss War which is hard as shit, but very cool with a great old-school "Western RPG" vibe to it, and there is also Elemental Gimmick Gear, which is kiiind of like Zelda that a lot of people like, but I could not get into it.

Evolution and Time Stalkers completely suck though, I would just give up on them sooner than later honestly.

Record of the Lodoss war,
has a diablo feel to it doesn't it?
I might give that a shot I loved the Diablo Dungeon Crawl style games for PC

Looking at the back of the game case, I see: "Record of Lodoss War will definitely satisfy Dreamcast owning Diablo fans" - gamespot.com

lol, and the manual has a "notes" section. Who ever uses those?

Actually, I have.
Multiple times.

For example...
I can't remember the game title, but I remember one game if you did a certain thing that was common to do, in a certain part of the game, it'd lock up and you'd have to start a new game. This was common in the past now that I think about it...
I wrote that down in the notes.

Also games that didn't give you any idea as to what to do next, I usually wrote a memo addressing what to do. Like a tip book almost..
Consistent of two pages.

Yep, there isn't much of a choice in the Dreamcast.

There's Shenmue too but I don't think that really counts as an RPG.

I finished both of those games. While I do kinda agree about time stalkers, I wholeheartly disagree about evolution. The games are part of a genre called dungeon crawlers. Dungeon crawlers or pretty repetetive overall and so are both evolution and time stalkers. But in a way I think evolution has a weird charm to it. I really liked the idea of cyframes and the characters were very unique. I think it's mainly the presentation, the turn based mechanic and it also has some beautiful music. It is one of the first RPG's I finished.

Maybe it's nostalgia as it was the first dreamcast games we owned together with tony hawk pro skater 1. But man I enjoyed it a lot.

I loved the character names and designs in Evolution. I remember back in '01 me and my boyz would be all about drawing Evolution characters. My friend had some awesome Mag Launcher drawings. I'll ask him if he still has them.

There's one RPG you might enjoy for the Dreamcast that hasn't been mentioned yet and that is Silver.

I've played both the Dreamcast and PC versions of the game and it is still one of my favorite RPGs. It's a action RPG where you go on a quest to get eight magicial orbs to defeat the evil emperor Silver. It's good fun.

Good call sir, I played and enjoyed both of these lesser know RPGs back on the Dreamcast. Got some fond memories of Silver although neither have aged very well.

I know I was told not to mention it but I'm going to anyway, SKIES OF ARCADIA. Best-JRPG-Ever. [spoiler:37vwgt4n]Along side Panzer Dragoon Saga[/spoiler:37vwgt4n]

Edit: Cosmic Cast away... BOY does the N.American cover art for silver SUCK! Check out the European one:

Yeah, the American cover art for Silver isn't that great.

Off topic, but Power Stone 2's cover art is THE worst cover art of ANY american Dreamcast game:

Huge logo, ugly green background, in-game character model of a secondary character.

Then we have the Japanese cover:

It's night and day.

Yeah the Dreamcast American covers are really screwed up, but Power Stone was a sequel to a very popular arcade game/launch title. I think it is below average but not a deal breaker.

Looks like a Japanese Dating Sim made it to western shores.

Still wouldn't buy this based on the cover, but atleast it look likes a cover of an rpg game.

^ I want this game!

I don't remember how I bought Arcadia, I remember seeing the cover and scratching my head, but beyond that I have no recollection. Nonetheless I thank the moons that I did. I also think Arcadia failed on dc cause of the dreadful dating sim-esque cover.

Found the opening movie for Silver. Forgot how incredibly eerie it was.

I'd also like to add that this game has a fantastic soundtrack.

Silver is a really nice and decent RPG (great voice acting too) ,  Evolution II is much better than the 1st (and highly sort after)

Nothing beats Grandia II on the DC for me (love that game) Also its worth looking at D2; it plays very much like a RPG and the game is quite brilliant in its own right
Title: Re: Good RPG for Dreamcast?

Ah yeah, the "D" series of games is very unique, but not for everyone. Very strange and somewhat hard to appreciate games, like Illbleed (which is not an RPG).

D2 and Maken X (which is also not an RPG) are the only Dreamcast games that I know of that cannot be properly burned and played freely on the console, so in a few years these may become some of the rarest games on the platform. They are worth checking into for collectors, at least.

D2 is already really tough to get ahold of.
Maken X is pretty common though.

Record of Lodoss War: Advent of Cardice is another RPG that might interest you. It's made by the same studio who went on to develop Shining Force Neo & EXA, both of which I enjoyed.

D2 was the game in the snow with aliens right? The plane crashed somwhere and you play the woman in the red dress? I remember reading about that in Sega Saturn magazine before the DC launched, amazing graphics for the time.

And which platform was the first D on? I keep confusing it with Enemy Zero on Saturn.

I never played Grandia 2 before, so on your recommendations I bought it.  Now I'm playing throgh #1 on the PSP before I start #2.  I did pop it in and play a few minutes to make sure it works so I could give the ebay guy feedback.  What a nice looking game.  I look forward to it.

I agree, it's really well thought out and fun to play.  Also, there's very little level grinding at all, and so far I actually want to get in the fights.  I was all ready to say, "You mean Grindia" but it's not like that at all, so there goes that pun.

Yeah, as long as you don't run away from a bunch of fights, you're pretty much good to go.
You can even win a lot of fights while under-leveled if you fight strategically.

It's my favorite battle system out of all the RPG games I've played. Every fight is unique and it never gets old.

The European Dreamcast cover art for Skies of Arcadia is EASILY the best one. Cube doesn't like it because it depicts females not being repressed, humiliated or stoned; they even have the nerve to actually smile in public... Those filthy ‘sexist’ whore!

Always with the personal attacks, I never said anything bad about the PAL one except that I found the Legends art better.

I like the GameCube one cause it shows floating islands, and flying ships. I don't dislike it with either really, both are better than the US art.

I know you don't like me, but at least try and remain civil. Please.

I have to agree with Cube on this one really, both the European and American Dreamcast covers do not represent the game very well.

I love the GameCube cover, but I am not sure how this was not posted.

On a technical level it is the best just because it does not have an awkward mix of 2D and 3D slapped over it. Love how the land is actually above them, I think it tells a lot about the game without giving too much away. The game is more about adventures, not about ship battles (as awesome of a game that would be too).

It just occurred to me that all the big RPGs on the Dreamcast have absolutely superb soundtracks. Skies of Arcadia, Grandia II, Silver, they all have excellent music.

I looked at it, I am a little OCD with Aika standing on air. Also the globe view in the background isn't selling me. While I understand the importance of having the other 2 protagonist on the box art, i'd go with the PAL one before the NTSC/J one.

To each his own I guess, bottom line is we are united when it comes to saying the game is a master piece.

If you can somehow find Evolution 2: Far Off Promise, that's also a keeper.

The game did actually get a European release in March of 2002, but it's impossible to find. And when I mean impossible, I mean Tales of Vesperia-type of impossible.
