Title: Samsung: 3D not healthy for almost everyone
Post by: Happy Cat on April 13, 2010, 05:46:38 pm
couldn't fit my full topic title here, which was

"Samsung: 3D not healthy for Kids, Teens, Pregnant Women, Elderly, Stoners, Insomniacs"

Quote
"Children and teenagers may be more susceptible to health issues associated with viewing in 3D and should be closely supervised when viewing these images. Children under the age of six should not view 3D TV."

"Pregnant women, the elderly, sufferers of serious medical conditions, those who are sleep deprived or under the influence of alcohol should avoid utilising the unit's 3D functionality."

"Viewing 3D television may also cause motion sickness, perceptual after effects, disorientation, eye strain and decreased postural stability. It is recommended that users take frequent breaks to lessen the potential of these effects. If your eyes show signs of fatigue or dryness or if you have any of the above symptoms, immediately discontinue use of this device and do not resume using it for at least thirty minutes after the symptoms have subsided."

"Watching TV while wearing 3D glasses for an extended period of time may cause a headache or fatigue. If you experience a headache, fatigue or dizziness, stop viewing TV and rest."

I also had heard something that 3D movies are also not good for people with stigmatism.

Did anyone else suddenly got an urge to watch some 3DTV?

I bet this is totally blow out of context...

Almost everything these days has small print warnings like this simply for damage control. Read the small print of something as simple and day to day as asprine. I'm sure normal 2D TVs probably have similar warnings in small print.

It's being blown out of the water simple because 3D is the next big fad... (that existed years ago, much like the Wii.)

Was going to get a 3-D TV for 4-20, but not anymore. Thanks for the heads up Samsung.

I get a pretty bad headache watching a 3D film in the cinema, not sure how I would cope with regular tv.

I get pretty trippy while watching 3D films. Nothing to complain about there.

I think you're right, It's just a precaution like the epilepsy warnings on video games or films with strobing lights.

Reminds me of this gem:

Graffiti is art.

However, graffiti as an act of vandalism is a crime. Every state/province has vandalism laws that apply to graffiti, and local entities such as cities and counties have anti-graffiti ordinances. Violation of these laws can result in a fine, probation, or a jail sentence. SEGA does not condone the real life act of vandalism in any form.

For a while, I thought SufferLikeGDid was Kogen in disguise.

Anyway, on topic: I am totally not for 3DTV. It's just a gimmick. Until they do away with the glasses, I will not be down for $100+ glasses and a small handful of worthy 3D films. As much as I've moaned about Blu-Ray in the past, I am down for adopting it once Star Wars hits and then I plan to build up the Pixar films as well as a load of effects driven movies. Keep 3D in the theaters, which I do support, and keep it out of the home.

What about when Star Wars is re-done in 3d?

/ haven't seen a Star Wars film.

// Don't want to.

They had it planned, but the cost to convert 2D film to 3D was too great back then so it was put on hold. I think talk of it started as far back as 2006. They might do it now that Avatar (aka ABADAH) proves money is to be had.

George has already been quoted saying that 3D has matured enough to gain his attention and that he'd be interested in working on a Star Wars project.

LOL I read that about three times before realizing you meant George LUCAS, not George of SEGAbits.

But yeah, I think 3D Star Wars would be awesome in theaters. As for home viewing, I'd prefer Blu-Ray Star Wars. The intro to Episode III would be awesome in HD.

LOL I did not though of that beforehand!

Also, bluray Star Wars is most certainly in it's way. The intro is wonderful in upscaled DVD quality, I can't wait for HD!
But what's the gripe with 3D at home? I think it's pretty neat. It's also useful! For example, in football matches. We are used to see them in these isometric angles, so sometimes you can't figure out if a ball is headed to the goal or way far off the post. With 3D you have a much better perception.. I think it's awesome.

My gripe with 3D at home is the price, and the fact that they are pushing "buy a 3D HDTV" when a majority of HDTV owners already purchased a standard HDTV in the last year. I'm not sure of the lifespan of an HDTV, but I love the one we have and do see it being replaced for another 5 years... unless it gets damaged in a move (or a Natal accident). Were I (and I'm assuming many others) to adapt to 3D HDTV, it wouldn't be for quite some time. At least, not until the price drops considerably and the cost of glasses goes down.

edit: and Episode III does look awesome upscaled! I downloaded the Spike TV Star Wars HD broadcast of Ep III and played them on our TV. It looked awesome (though not up to snuff with what a Blu-Ray would probably offer).

It's all communicability. They want the products to sell. It's a normal thing, it's not they are forcing anyone to do anything..
And I don't think 3DTVs are expensive. LCDs are cheap. I remember a few years back, CRT TVs were much more expensive than 3DTVs of same size are today.

That pic is gorgeous.

Yeah, for as much shit as the prequels got, they look beautiful. Especially in high res photo form.

The political drama is pretty good as well, I don't get the complaints :P

I'll get back to 3D TV in a moment!

Anyway, talking Star Wars, the political drama was excellent whenever Palpatine was involved. That's one of the things I like about the new Clone Wars series, they always sprinkle in a few political thriller episodes.

As for 3DTV, the New Yorker had a good article on it in their recent issue. The writer speculated that in the future, flat 2D movies will be seen as a novelty just as black & white is seen as now. "Wanna go catch an ol' flatty?"

hmmm first color, now depth.. One has to wonder what the television will evolve to in the next 20-30 years.

Big Jim was thinking to himself,
Maybe down in Mexico,
Or a picture upon somebody's shelf?
But then the crowd began to stamp their feet an' the house lights did dim
An' in the darkness of the room there was only Jim an' him
Starin' at the butterfly who just drew the jack of hearts

If only Data relived classic episodes of The Nanny rather than messing about with Sherlock Holmes.

This is so much cooler, in my opinion. No need for a new TV! Think the Natal or Move (or Wii 2) could do this?

It's cooler, but for the one single person using it.. TV is more of a social thing I think..

True, I meant for gaming. For TV it would be hilarious. Daddy watches in 3D while mommy and little Timmy shut up and let daddy enjoy his programs.

LOL

Yeah, for gaming it would be great.
Though there are even better gaming concepts! One of the most amazing things I experienced as a kid was putting on some VR goggles and playing Doom in REAL first person. It was a rather limited tech demo, but it was freaking amazing. I wish they'd do something like that somehow. In a table tennis game for example it would be amazing.

Did you see that topic I posted here a while back about the full VR machines? You run inside a steel trackball to move around and everything, so you control the game by literally running around, ducking and moving etc.
