Title: Forum technical issues topic
Post by: Happy Cat on February 06, 2010, 09:23:59 pm
Report all technical issues you bump into during your use of the forum in this topic.  This topic can be a log of sorts where we note changes and report errors and or problems.

Feb 6th 2010: Disabled post approval for newly registered members.[/list]
Feb 7th 2010: Added YouTube BBcode[/list]
Feb 7th 2010: Fixed staying logged in issues[/list]
Feb 8th 2010: Large images will no longer stretch the layout[/list]

youtube tags, you copy the ID from the youtube URL

like this URL for example

youtube.com/watch?v=hvBsj2-TidA

you take the ID, which i have bolded, and past it inbetween the YouTube BBCode tags

like this

Code: [Select]
[YouTube]hvBsj2-TidA[/YouTube]
and this is the result:
[youtube:3dv05qdi]hvBsj2-TidA[/youtube:3dv05qdi]

While we're at it...

Image tags.

Take the link of the image and add (http://+) (Or click the IMG code box)
Code: [Select]
[img]blahblahlinkhere[/img]
It should look like this.

I am still having log in problem.

I know you want to say its on my end. But this is the ONLY forum it does this too.
Firefox 3.6

Edit: It seems to be a browser problem.
Firefox doesn't like this forum. Chrome does...

I'm using the latest version of FireFox too.

Sounds like it's a problem on your end, especially if Chrome works for you.

Really?

Could you provide a screen shot, and tell me exactly what you are doing that causes this error... it sounds very odd...

Large image will no longer stretch the forum layout

never saw a problem with it to begin with, but George wanted it fixed.

It does help the flow of the page stay consistent. This usually helps when people post full sized pictures without thumbnail script. I think it was a good idea. :D

Custom titles now available... took way too long to get that working =P

Just go to your user control panel to change it.  It would be under the profile area.

Not an issue but a request. Spoiler tag please? Something like having a black background behind the spoilers text. You would then have to select the text to see it. Like NeoGaf.

I generally just post with white text, so people can highlight it to find it.

Sorry about the double post. I found this on my computer. It's all the smilies from what used to be Sega Nerds including the suggestions everyone posted on some thread and were never added to the forum.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2772347/seganerdssmilies.zip (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2772347/seganerdssmilies.zip)

The package includes the original afro man. Sort that out, Shadi boy. Pretty pls

EDIT:
Damn it, sorry about this. One final request. Can you make it that the images larger than the width of the forum are shrunk? I guess it's better than a scroll bar.

Originally the images stretched the design, but George didn't like that....

If anything... I guess I'll just make an alternate theme where the screen stretches across it, normal afroman will be replacing the happy afroman soon.. opening up Filezilla right now.

This more has to do with the main site than the forum, but the Super Monkey Ball Review isn't showing up under the Reviews link at the top of the page.

Also, a release dates section up there beside the Interviews, Reviews, Forums, and Contact links would be a nice addition.

Shadi can fix issues on the main page too? I'm still not seeing youtube videos on the posts there.

I have updated my Java and Flash, but still not seeing nothing...

For example, I can't see shit on the Platinum Games homepage, only a huge black screen...

Hmm... try pressing Ctrl+0 just hold control on the right side of the keyboard, and then press 0.... it looks like you got the settings zoomed in.  If that doesn't do anything.. I guess I'll have ot download Opera and see if it does that.

Yeah, I won't do it again. I honestly didn't think it would be such a big deal, just a signature.  I didn't do it to intentionally piss you off or anything.  Not like I altered your name or email address.  Oh well, can't do everything right =P that's why we are humans.

From what he's said in this thread, he did it on purpose.  I don't really have the time to try to remember what it was, or where I have the pictures stored and stuff.  I've een working 10-12 hour days lately, and my job has been really stressful.  I feel like Shadi is kicking down my sand castle.

Once you have seen Shadi IRL and picture him kicking down a sand castle, the hardest thing in the world to do is to get upset with him.

Anyways, this is good. Next time he will know what to do. I am not sure if you know, but this is Shadi's first real Internet related job so of course he is going to mess up, but he can only improve. Especially how he constantly apologizes, I am certain he did not mean anything by it at all.

Try logging out and logging in.

I know that seems random, but I don't get that error, and PHP errors aren't going to be different on every browser because PHP isn't rendered by the browser, it's rendered by the server.

I did it before and I did it again. Same thing bro.

Funny thing I noticed when I logged out:

I do not think clickable text should expand when your mouse hovers over them. It is rare, but sometimes they were at awkward angles where they would expand so much that they would go to the next line, making it impossible to click it.

Also, the front page is still buggy over my avatar !!!!!!!!

Signatures...  I'm trying to put the PSN trophy one like Soup has on my signature, next to the XBL one, but it's saying alternately that it must be no larger than 150 high (it's 155) or that it can't determine the dimensions of the image.  How can Soup have one if the system won't allow it?  I'd like to put that in my signature.  Can you change the limit to 160?
Title: Re: Forum technical issues topic
Post by: Happy Cat on July 21, 2010, 02:58:33 pm
Changed the height restriction limit to 160px.  That is high as it's going though.  Not everyone has big resolutions... just ask Sharky =P hes running off ancient 1024x768 and it's kinda bad to have tall sigs clogging up screen space.

Also a newer forum skin will be made to go along with the new design.  It will be based off of phpbb3 prosilver.  The current theme is based off of the old subsilver.

Title: Re: Forum technical issues topic

well, just putting this out there.

Even if the site is running slow, there is nothing we can do.  We don't host the servers.  Gatorhost is a really good host though, so I wouldn't expect their servers to ever be slow for a very long time. Unless SEGAbits got so overloaded with activity that it slowed down their servers.

In that case George would have to upgrade a dedicated server!

Hey there fellow bits!

Around 11pm central time SEGAbits will be going into maintenance mode.  That means you won't be able to access the main site or post on the forums.  We are not sure how long this will be, we are making quite a few changes and don't want to underestimate the time, especially if something goes wrong.

Worse case scenario.. we will be back by early Monday morning!

Best case scenario... we will be back in a few hours.

so most likely somewhere in between there.

Thanks!

the big changes are internally for the most part. like fixing all the stupid forums errors (hopefully)

The only thing most people will notice is probably a more cleanish look on the front page.

Think of it like shaving a beard off or something =P its really not that huge of a change, but it looks much nicer then the current one.

I noticed that when I loaded up the site from my work computer, the forum fonts were very very tiny. I had to hit command + a few times to get it to the old size, but now the forums are very wide.

Nice! 100% better!

The problem was that the main news page looked fine, but the forums were itty bitty. making the forums larger helped, but then the main news page was enormous! Like large print edition huge.

Now it's perfect! thanks

Grandpa mode. The only wrong thing with the text were the topic titles in the forum listing. Those I agree were too small. Now everything is too big except that. Shit makes no sense in this place.

Also this http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2772347/hugecolours.PNG (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2772347/hugecolours.PNG) It was streched before you changed the fonts too.

Hmm i see...
I got an idea. but Im at school rightnow so it might have to wait until tomorrow.  Due to the way the site is setup I can't make individual forum themes anymore, but im gonna research how to do one of those dropdown lists that let you select a stylesheet with javascript.

It's odd. I haven't used my Windows computer for a while and the large font looks nice on Mac OS, so in the end I got used to it. Now it feels a bit odd but everything will go back to normal as soon as I finally hook up my Windows computer again and start using a real operating system.

I can still thank you with lots of love, even if you don't want it, because love is something I have to spare. <3

Working on building a new forum theme (shhhh...)

so the header will disappear every once in a while on the forums. I'll be sure to turn it back on after I'm done coding for the hour or whatever. It's a WP-united option that integrates phpbb inside wordpress template and it's preventing me from working on a theme. So i have it off at the moment.

Just wanted to make a note that I know the PM box is borked up right now. Theres no easy fix. I thought i found a way to lower its size but that also resized all the forums to be smaller... so yeah

I can't let it overlap either, cause that ruins the design on the main page.

so yeah.. pretty screwed at the moment =P not feeling good and im not in the mood to go digging through template files, so you'll just have to deal with a borked PM box for a while.

You can put one up. Sorry... when I changed everyone's avatar to THE MAFIA i didn't realize it was going to delete them. i was just setting group avatars so I only thought it would temporarily over-ride the current avatars.

but I went through the directory lol, hopefully this is the avatar you were looking for...  im pretty sure I remember you with this one.

In regards to Youtube... I'll have to see if SMF supports custom BBcode. If not I'm sure there an add-on for youtube.

Regarding being sent back to the topic list after posting; You can change that, along with a magnitude of other options by clicking "Look and Layout" under Modify Profile.

Happening to me too, I'll clear my cookies (AGAIN) later to see if it is resolved.

I personally don't like the dislike Kudos, as people tend to abuse it if they don't agree with your opinion. Remember the Sega forums? Oh god how the Sony users neg repped a ton of Nintendo users and it went back and forth.

Keeping it positive only is so much better. That way, if you do something awesome. You get a better Kudos number. This way makes it so no one can abuse the neg rep.

I don't have access to a mac :( Lol wish I did

there isn't anything I can do about that issue at the moment. You'll just have to download firefox or something, or just view the site on your ipad. Apple obviously did something to their latest version of safari that's broke the site. The site is coded in very basic XHTML/CSS

Can you tell me the version number of Safari you are using? I wanna see if other people are reporting similar issues with it.

I'm unable to remain logged in to the forums. I'll leave the page, head back a few minutes later and will have to sign in again. Is it a profile setting?

Yeah, several users are having this issue. Shadi is kind of avoiding it by telling us to clear our cookies. So I'm going to say, it is not a cookie problem!

Well, if this an issue with cookies, then it's not just Sega Bits, it's the same for me on Youtube and it happens on all of the browsers I use.

Oddly enough, Facebook and Twitter seem unaffected.

By the way, I would also like to thank George for pointing out this post I did (http://www.segabits.com/forums/index.php?topic=1232.msg35207#msg35207). Though in my defense, my post wasn't in 99px size, at least not when I originally posted it.

Could probably solve the cookie issue if I didn't have to have front page articles integrated on the forum theme.

Wordpress and SMF cookies don't get along well with each other. I know this from personal experience before SEGAbits.

If you guys want to stay logged in. Convince George we don't need featured articles in the forums.

Okay quotes work now, had to turn off quick reply to get them working. I honestly have no idea what's going on with the forums. I think the database might be damaged a little bit, SMF won't display the current version that's installed either even though I know I just updated it to the latest.

So yeah, sorry, but, that's just how it's going to have to be for now. At least you guys can quote again. I also found an option that I think will make the forums run faster, they seem to be going faster for me, so I think it worked.

I found a way to associate guest posts with an actual member. So i went ahead and set all the Anonymous posts to Sanus account (this is a change that can't be undone). So he has all his old posts back, xD, the ones he used to have before Sharky deleted his account.

Thanks Shadi :D
No problem!

I'll try to get youtube videos working soon. just been busy.

Regarding forum software, SMF is the best free forum software there is, in terms of features. George would have to cough up the $$$ for better forum software.

We are in talks about changing the back end of the site. We'll post more information during the next couple of months. Right now we will stick with SMF, but we probably won't be using it forever, no.

Nice. Not being able to embed youtube videos is shitty. Hopefully we upgrade soon so we can so what other forums do.

Nice. Not being able to embed youtube videos is shitty. Hopefully we upgrade soon so we can so what other forums do.

SMF can do it, just not by default, it takes some code tweaking. I'll try to get it working sometime this weekend, but I'm really busy drawing thumbnails right now.. trying to come up with ideas for projects -.-;;; lol. overloaded, plus other homework.

but yeah, all the commercial forum solutions embed youtube videos by default, maybe SMF will sometime in the future, but as of now it doesn't.

we now have youtube videos again! Custom coded by myself, no need for installing a mod!

you can embed a youtube video by either hitting the youtube button on posting page, or by using the youtube tags [youtube][/youtube]

you can embed a video in two ways, and if it doesn't match in those two ways, the code will throw out an error... example

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=NSkMNhc04SI[/youtube]
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=NSkMNhc04SI[/youtube]

Glad you guys are enjoying the youtube embeds. I needed a break from designing stuff so I decided I would mess around with javascript for a bit.

I tweaked the code a bit more, now you can embed a video in two ways, and if it doesn't match in those two ways, the code will throw out an error... example

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=NSkMNhc04SI[/youtube]
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=NSkMNhc04SI[/youtube]
[youtube]http://youtu.be/NSkMNhc04SI[/youtube]
[youtube]http://youtu.be/NSkMNhc04SI[/youtube]
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyrP6mHnX1Y[/youtube]
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyrP6mHnX1Y[/youtube]
[youtube]http://google.com[/youtube]
[youtube]http://google.com[/youtube]

Anyways, that was a fun little break. Suppose I should get back to my designing homework.
