Title: Shining Series
Post by: Skateboard on December 08, 2010, 02:59:22 pm
I’m new to this forum, so first of all - Hi to everybody!

The reason why I registered are the comments from Aki-at about the Shining series at the recent Shining Hearts article . So here are my questions:

1. I once started a topic at SFC regarding the sales figures of Shining games, because I wanted to compare the titles where the Takahashi brothers were involved with the post-Camelot games. Since nobody had sales figures at SFC I had to search the net and was not pleased with the result I got. I’m surprised about the figures you posted and would like to adopt them with their original source, if that’s ok? Do you even have more figures about the series?

Here is the topic (BTW I am not a native speaker):
http://forums.shiningforcecentral.com/i ... =14778&hl= (http://forums.shiningforcecentral.com/index.php?showtopic=14778&hl=)

2. I’m even more surprised about the statement: “...SEGA have asked Camelot a few times to develop a new Shining game for them, alas to no success”, as it is contrary to what I had thought and I think it is widely believed by the Shining fans that SEGA are the ones hindering a new Camelot title, while Camelot still would like to make them. For my part I don’t know what to think... Creditable sources on this topic are rare or non existence… However, there was this interview with Camelot, which is from 2007, if I remember correctly:

Hiroyuki Takahashi says: “There are also many requests to make Shining Force III. At one stage we got a petition with many signatures to make a new Shining Force game. This was sent to Sega, Nintendo and Camelot. There are a lot of people that want us to make that game as well. We don’t know what form it would take, but we want to answer the requests of the fans.”

So when did SEGA ask Camelot? And how often?

Hello and welcome to the forums Skateboard. I don't really have answers to any of your questions. I just wanted to say that you made the right choice in joining this awesome forum!!

Hope you'll have a great time.

Just to say something on topic. It's sad to see the direction they have taken with the shining series. I was a big fan of the early 3 shining force series and the other shining games on the saturn. The market just ain't that big for their existance sadly. I do believe if they ever did make a shining force 4, they would have to put a lot of thought into what they could do to make it apeal to more gamers. Kind of like how valkyria chronicles brought the SRPG genre in a whole new style.

I think they would have to do more than just a new shining force with updated visuals.

For sales figures, see;

http://www.megafileupload.com/en/file/2 ... a-rar.html (http://www.megafileupload.com/en/file/245257/parta-liza-kai--kanta-korniza-rar.html) - Famitsu sales

Sales for the Mega Drive are not available, but considering the lacklustre sale of the console itself. I doubt very much was sold. Please completely ignore VGChartz sales, they are not reliable and make up information majority of the time.

As for SEGA asking, it's information I've gather from Japanese fans, such as Storm and I believe that, in particular Shining Soul, which used a great deal of original people, that SEGA tried it and still wanted to go down that route until they dropped it in the end.

As far as I know, Shining games now are more profitable in Japan than they ever were and have much lower budgets to boot, why would they want to change this format? They also make a good bit selling the models of the characters too.

The biggest reason SEGA wants to try to get back with Camelot or just try making sRPGs again is because they were regarded much more highly, and the fans strongly prefer the original series.

I used to consider the Shining series one of SEGA's best ever and with more potential than almost all of them - Now I have kind of gotten over how they will never be like that ever again. I have moved on. It is not that bad of a fate, at least the Golden Sun games exist.

I wouldn't hold your breath on SEGA working with Camelot every again. I seen a interview with the head of Camelot in Games TM detailing how they were treated by SEGA at the end of the Saturn, it wasn't good reading (late payments, no help with R&D and poor ) basically Camelot lost money making the last couple of Saturn games,  It when on to say how Camelot was personally upset that on the unveiling of Dreamcast in Japan ,  Camelot wasn't invited as guests at all, unlike many 1st and 3rd party partners that did well on the Saturn.

In Camelot owns words, that day was the day they knew they'll never work with SEGA again.

Thanks for your answers and especially Aki-at for the sales figures. The extremely poor sales of the Shining series during the Saturn era in Japan make things more clearly for me now. I always considered the bad / dying Saturn (sales) and the tiny market for strategic games in the EU/US to be the reason, but with sales figures like that in Japan it is even more understandable. It’s too bad there are no figures for the MD, MCD or GG available, as this would have given me an idea of what a “success”, as Hiroyuki Takahashi is cited here[1], regarding sales on the MD was and how the series actually evolved (up or down) over time.
My guess would be that sales of the Shining series were always quite low/average.

In general, I understand both sides. SEGA having to deal with bad sales like this on top of its overall way down. And Hiroyuki Takahashi who seems to be an idealistic game designer who had to deal with minimum budget and a “chaotic” Sega company which was on the move.

Time has passed, but that doesn’t mean I stopped liking SRPGs. For me there is still some hope for another Shining game made by Camelot and that’s why I can only invite those who care to take part of the current SOS-Campaign at SFC, as I do. The plus side on the current situation is that a new Shining title from Camelot wouldn’t be bound to a SEGA console with the smaller market and Camelot is also better known nowadays.

@CrazyTails: Thanks for the warm welcome. For me console gaming stopped with the death of the DC. And I still haven’t bought a new console afterwards, so I can’t really comment on the new Shining titles (most of them didn’t even come to the EU anyway). I too believe that they would have to overhaul and improve a new tactical Shining Force from its “old” engine. Especially a better AI and a faster game play would be nice (SF3’s flaws for me), but I am totally open for a new experience. I love VC2 (can’t play VC1 for obvious reasons) very much and have to agree. BTW I have seen people suggest the usage of its engine for a new SF title. As VC2’s game play lives from ranged (counter) attacks and to capture the flags I am not convinced right now, but it might be a nice subject to discuss.

@Aki-at: Thanks again for the figures. Is this your work or does this file come directly from Famitsu? And am I allowed to give this file to others? Also too bad Shining Soul 2 failed so hard, but I guess it was because of Shining Soul’s flaws?

@Sega Uranus: Well, Camelot has been quite successful after they left SEGA. So if SEGA would get them on board again, they could profit from Camelot’s fame now. In the end, it seems mostly personal opinions/preferences and some interpretations of interviews what builds the information about the relation between SEGA and Camelot. It could eventually be really bad and they never work together again. As much as I would like to like Golden Sun it doesn’t look like to comfort me. It seems too childish to me and the community/audience seem to be children/teens. Maybe someday I will feel like giving it a chance.

@Team Andromeda: Which magazine was that in? Could you please give me a link? If you base your assertions on the interview I have linked below, I would have to contradict in most points.

Its from the GamesTm Mag you linked, but in the full Magazine edition, there is more, and details how Camlot felt rejected when they weren't invited has guests on the DC unveiling, unlike other major 3rd/1st Party supporters and how then and then they knew the days working for SEGA were numbered

SEGA treated Camelot like shit. So I'm not about to get my hopes at all, more so with the current SEGA.

@Skateboard

Golden Sun is not childish at all really, no more than the majority of the other Shining games. You really should check it out!

The best advice I have probably given anyone ever is if you ever want to get into any game franchise that has been around for years, completely ignore what the fanbase is like. Always.
Title: Re: Shining Series
Post by: CrazyT on December 19, 2010, 07:50:41 am
Golden sun feels like  the shining series in every single way. They never lost the priest, the long conversations between characters, the music, the way battles are viewed from the same angle, the races, the polish and more. I've been playing the game for a while stocking up 25 hours now (still not finished) and the amount of polish that went into the game is extraordinary. It's beautiful. Just when you think that things can't get any better they do.

You're making a big mistake with that statement. That's all I got to say. Camelot hasn't changed.
Title: Re: Shining Series
Post by: Aki-at on December 19, 2010, 08:33:28 am
I would say that Golden Sun is more childesh than some of the Shining series, but despite that, it does not mean the games are bad or anything, think of it like Sonic vs Shinobi, one of these platformers is more violent than the other, but it does not mean the former is worse (Well it is worse now, but not back in the days!)

So I would recommend it still, as it's a nicely designed game. However the series was meant to go beyond just three games and at the current moment, that seems very very unlikely. It does feel somewhat like a Shining game, but in many ways, it does not. I would rather argue it feels like it's own game and it's own world, and a rather well designed world at that.

Though Camelot working on it's original IPs maybe sometime off now thanks to the terrible sales of Golden Sun 3.

Going back to the original topics, analysts in Japan are predicting that Shining Hearts is set to become the most successful first week Shining game ever and it seems set to beat Golden Sun 3's opening week in Japan by more than doubling it.
Title: Re: Shining Series
Post by: Aki-at on December 19, 2010, 08:57:22 am
And I've just recieved confirmation that Shining Hearts has done at least 80,000 day one sales.

That means it outsold Valkyria Chronicles 1 week one sales (80,000) Valkyria 2 week sales are probably going to be overtaken (100,000) Golden Sun 3 week one sales (47,000) and could very well over take End of Eternity PS3 (120,000)

Here's something else to think about; Shining Hearts, a generic looking traditional RPG on the PSP (15 million sales in Japan) is set to become the most successful Shining game that we have any recorded data for. Whilst we have Shining Force Feather, a SRPG on the DS (30 million + sales in Japan) the closest Shining game we had in a decade, not only failed to get anywhere close to 100,000 (Something that the series established doing on the PS2) but it sold so poorly that it put the developer out of business.

So there you have it folks, the Shining series is set to stay like this for a long long time. I suppose you can take comfort in knowing at least one of the original race is in Shining Cross, but that's about it I'm afraid.

Ah for some reason I read what you said wrong and thought you were saying ALL of the classic races were in it. never mind.

As for the Shining Force situation, thats fine and dandy that they sell so many copies, but since they have the Canvas engine already made. Which would be perfect for a new Shining Force game... It wouldnt hurt to throw us a bone as well as making the flamboyant crap.

If they can make games as different as Cross and Hearts at the same time they could make a classic too.
Title: Re: Shining Series
Post by: Truesonic on December 20, 2010, 07:36:50 am
At this point the most we can hope for is a centaur, wolfman, robot, dragon etc. class added in Cross.

I think as Aki-at has said before, Sega probably believes this is the right direction for the series to take. I personally wish they would change the name of this series to something else. To call any of these games a 'Shining' game is an insult to the original series. I guess the rest of us are either going to have to accept the change or continue to whine at the lack of Camelot's influence. :<

They did, that was Shining Force Feather, yeah the characters still looked generic, but otherwise, it was a SRPG, had centuers, machines and a few other races too;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6Gugfl2_EQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6Gugfl2_EQ)

However, as I said, the game sold so poorly that Flightplan effectively went bankrupt. Yeah SEGA is coughing up the cash at the end of the day, but it tells you how bad the game did that it causes the developer to go bankrupt.

Right now, the games are cheap, SEGA make money off of the models they make off of characters and they sell. The remake on the GBA, the return of the original artists to work on Shining Soul and a game that has SRPG have all resulted in financial losses for SEGA.

Unfortunate, but what you going to do?

Thanks again to you all.

@Team Andromeda: I see. So there are a few more details in the magazine. I hope I can read it for myself someday. I didn’t know that. I thought someone at SFC mentioned only minor/non-essential things were missing (like pictures with description and such…). However, I could imagine as Camelot/SonicSP never was part of SEGA and they also had produced games for other systems at this point (hence they already had turned away a bit) that SEGA simply had no plans for collaborating with Camelot at the DC’s start. The poor sales of the Shining series on the Saturn would go well together with this.

@Sega Uranus: Thanks for the hint. ;)

@CrazyTails: Thanks, you really want me to give it another chance. ;) The thing is, I have watched my younger brother playing it a few times back then and I just didn’t like it as much as I had wished. It’s not that it seems to be produced with kids / teens in mind alone. BTW the childish German translation adds a lot to this. I also get easily annoyed by random battle encounters with the typical RPG battle system where you end up “disabling your mind” because it’s so repetitive. ;) Nevertheless, I believe the game has still enough to offer to make it worth it.

@Aki-at: I took a closer look at the figures and noticed a few things. I just hope I read your file right:

1. A game like SF3 Scenario I drops out of the charts after 2 weeks. But just because it is no longer under the top 30 doesn’t mean it stopped selling, right? Which would mean the figures are not accurate and only represent the sales as long as a game was selling (very) well and was therefore still in the charts? I think I have seen weeks where place 30 was still 10K+.

2. Shining Wisdom is a strange example. (Release in file: 11.8.1995 / at SFC: 21.07.1995??)
The initial weeks are missing and the game seems like an unusual looooong seller in the series. If I consider Shining Force 3 Scenario I could have sales like this in the months after it droped out of the charts it would make its figures a lot higher.

These are the weekly figures of SW covered in the file:
25.09.95 - 01.10.95: 13.184
02.10.95 - 08.10.95: 4.716
09.10.95 - 15.10.95: 9.144
08.01.96 - 14.01.96: 8.523
15.01.96 - 21.01.96: 5.814

These particular sales also “behave” strange (down and up). Is this normal?
So much for the sales figures for now.

It’s nice to see Shining Hearts doing well. According to the Media Create site it sold “106,733” in the first week. You might be right. As long as people don’t buy SRPGs we will barely see any.

@Sharky: I would like to know how you imagine a Shining Force with the BLITZ engine, because I’m not so sure about that. I think it would have to be heavily altered, unless you give nearly everyone ranged weapons and introduce “capture the flag” to SF. If the engine has to be heavily altered you might even end up with an engine closer to SF3 than VC.

@Truesonic: Instead of whining we might join the SOS Campaign at SFC and write a letter to Camelot. ;) At least we tried. Effort = minimal.

You should give it a try if you can. Amidst the more kiddy nature lies a well polished game made with a lot of care, camelot style. About the frequent battle thing. It's hard to explain but it's as if  the game is programmed in a way that they know when it's anoying and when it's not. For instance in puzzle sections, there are few to no battles at all. The battles overall don't occur that much, and the best thing is  that battles don't take  that long.

As you may know, the 2d golden suns on the GBA HIGHLY ressemble the style of shining force 3, minus the 3d environments.

Battles SF3 (http://http://download.gameblog.fr/images/jeux/6011/ShiningForceIII_Saturn_Edit_002.png)
Battles GS (http://http://goldensun3.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/160111l2.jpg?w=440&h=350)

evironment sprites SF3 (http://http://s.uvlist.net/l/y2005/2/7849.jpg)
Envronment sprites GS (http://http://www.oocities.com/gldnsn2/screen.jpg)

I might be stating the obvious here since you might be a much bigger "shining" fan than me :P, i'm just trying to say that if golden sun was called, shining sun for instance it may have caught your attention a lot more.

I would love to see Camelot working again with Sega, but at this moment, I believe there are no chances to see this happening.

In Japan, at the most popular online thread about Sega, people are "fighting" about the Shining series. It's the hottest theme since last years about "Sega". It's hottest than Bayonetta or everything else.

But you know, Sega users and old Sega users are minority in Japan.

I am one of the people who are defending the classic style of the series, but we lose the battle completely when Sega has shipped 160/180k copies of Shining Hearts in the Japanese market.

We know that Sega has shipped 300k copies of Shining Force(MD) in Japan in the past, and have sold -/+ 150k copies of Shining Wisdom(SS) here, but they have never sold that ammount since then. This is the first time the series sell more than 150k in 15 years.

If you count all the rereleases, collections, convertions... yes! Shining Force is the most successful title in the series worldwide without doubt! However(the series alone), it's not a huge success even in Europe or USA (I believe that Sega has never put big efforts to make this series huge though...).

I don't believe Camelot is coming back simply because they have made one of the worst game of 2010 in Japan. The last Golden Sun is hated everywhere here, people are complaining about everything on the title.

But... who knows. Shining Hearts producer has said last week (on his Twitter account) that "there could be something" this year to commemorate Shining series anniversary. However, he or Sega has not confirmed nothing about it.

And I'm playing Shining Hearts without pause. It's a fun game and the story this time is a bit better than Tears and Wind. People who has finished the game can not explain what's the truth behind all the characters, the island, plot, etc... but there are some facts that made us believe everyone there are already... dead!

I remember this site/platform called BYOND.
Build. Your. Own. Net. Dream

Fairly simple game engine design..thing..site... I Can't explain it
Anyways this guy made a Online Turnbased-RPG in tribute to the original Shining series..
Did a sweet job.. Brought back memories.
And I remember him constantly hating on Sega for using the Shining name with the new games. Ahh yes..
My point is:

IF you dont like the new ones, whine about it and fix it yourself: FAN GAME!~

There are indeed fan games in the making. Some of them are old and abandoned or never got far, but there are also promising ones, like the Shining Force II Community Project or Bludragn’s Shining Force PC Engine.

Sorry. There are no reliable sources for the sales of Mega-Drive games in Japan, however it is very known that on that time, the sales of a game released by the companies = almost the half what they told. If Sega said Shining Force sold 300k only in Japan, you can figure that the true sold number was 150k.

Now a small information about the Shining series:

- Shining Soul, Tears, Wind, Road... are placed in the same world of the original series, but on another continent;

- Shining Wind has introduced to the series the "real world" (our world);

- Shining Hearts is believed to take place in the Spiritual World, between the fantasy world (the whole Shining series world) and the real world (USA, Japan, Brazil, Africa, etc...).

Shining Force NEO, EXA, Feather, Cross Raid, are placed on a completely new world each one.

ctually the truth be told, i'm getting fed up of Camelot's whining. Yes Sega treated them badly towards the end of the Saturn, but they're forgetting that Sega did them a big favour in not only getting started but esentially letting them do whatever they wanted with the series. Hardly any companies from that period and today would even allow SHINING to go the way it became in the nineties.

But in their defence, this isn't the only series from a second party to have fallen prey to other producers who want to take the series in a new direction and make a quick buck in the process. If the whole debacle with SAKURA TAISEN is to believed anyway. Why would Camelot want to be a part of something like that? Regardless if camelot want to do another title, and Sega obviously has gone out of their way not thrash their heritage(SS not included) then kiss and make up because the only ones suffering are the fans.

There are bad things happening with the Shining series right now.

Rumors: Sawada is now the leader of the series after the (sales) success of Shining Hearts.

He is prepairing a "celebration" for the Shining series 20th Anniversary. Things he would do on March, 29:

- erase all the pages about the original series at the Shining World Portal Site, along with a renewal of the page;

- cut Camelot from Shining forever;

- cut Shining Force SOS Campaign;

- cut the rest of the Japanese fans of the original series.

The rumors also says that Sawada would allow Camelot to celebrate the 20th of the Shining series if they want it. Same for Climax...

Sawada Tsuyoshi is laughing about the futile and smallest number of fans of the original series around the world, showing the number of people who is following that campaign on twitter to save the series. Someone asked about the original series games on the Virtual Console, he said he will not take it off, because its just like people "visiting the museum"...

Sawada said that the only way to people get information regarding the original series, is visiting Camelot's homepage...

Jesus Christ! This is so disturbing for me (0.0;) I love the original series, more than the one created by Sawada. It's just annoying and sad that Sega has finally allowed him to do whatever he wants to the series.

I have not joined that Shining Force SOS campaign, but I'm really dissapointed with the fans of the series around the world. I know that Sega has contributed with the decline of the series around the world by not releasing all the titles out of Japan, though.

I have played all, simply ALL the titles of the "new" series, and yes, Sawada, differently from Shimosato, was trying to keep a link with the original series, but he was also putting a lot of erotic things from those romance simulation adventure games on it. I dislike that, and the story and arguments of his games are horrible. Camelot was not that good too, but was better than Sawada's ones.

I hope Sawada goes to hell soon, like Miyoshi and the producer of that "Shooting Project". ;p

Sawada's bastardization of this series knows no bounds.

I think now is too late to stop him. I think I have to accept that the Shining series is not popular anymore anywhere

People only cares about Sonic, Sonic, Sonic... maybe I should start hating Sonic too

And look, there is more: rumors says that Sega is not satisfied with the sales of Valkyria 3 and there are no plans for a sequel anymore. The series would end on the third installment. Sega CS#3 is the team behind all Sega recent RPGs and Platinum Games ... games. Sega has already sent most of the team from Valkyria to works with Sawada on the next Shining titles.

Seriously! Sawada is a FREAK! And now he is in charge and leading completely the series and got a high status inside SEGA CS#3.

Game Over for Camelot and Game Over for me. I've got tired fighting at the threads on 2ch...

I've been against him since the very start he got attached to the series. The danger is now if he ends up being in charge of Sega's fledging RPG department, it truly is game over. RED and Ohji Hiroi ended up leaving Sega after similar events and they've yet to produce a decent ST game since then.

He is not yet the leader of CS#3. He has to respond to Shimosato. For a weird reason, Shimosato is now the chief/boss at Sega CS#3.

Shimosato controls the producers: Sawada, Rieko Kodama, Sakai, Virtual-On producer, and leads the projects from Platinum Games, Hatsune Miku games, K-On games, etc...

In terms of sales, Sega CS#3 is one of the most successful divisions for Sega in Japan.

And again, for some weird reason, Rieko Kodama has not rised inside Sega... like most of the fans wanted.

 Seems that the next Shining title would be SHINING GAKUEN, placed in the real world... o.o;;

Last, Sega itself wants Maxima to be the next super heroine of the company.

I would not listen to that Valkyria Chronicles rumour just yet, it would seem rather strange that SEGA would act like that with Valkyria Chronicles 3 yet not act like that with Shining Hearts sales, so far Valkyria Chronicles 3 is outselling it on a week by week basis. Add to that you have Western sales possibility with Valkyria Chronicles 3 (And the previously did good for a PSP title) I don't think I am willing to trust that rumour at all.

But SEGA has done crazier things.

I'm telling you right now if the Shining series goes down the route it has been these recent years I might just disown it and pretend it doesn't exist anymore. While I have not played the newer Shining Tears, EXA, and Neo I still think it's sad to see how much the series has changed from the originals.

Gone are the fantasy worlds that captivated many with its creative visuals, stories and characters. Now what we have are generic (erotic) anime characters with cliche stories of amnesia and love triangles pulling swords and rings out of peoples hearts.

The Shining series deserves so much better than this, especially for its 20th anniversary. I would much rather see the series go out with poor sales with Camelot then live on with the its new direction.

 OH! HOLY SHIT!

I got a new HOT rumor about the 20th Shining series Anniversary.

Seems that Sawada was lying to the people about Camelot, just to piss off some old fans who dislike his Shining games.

The Shining World Portal site renewal is now official, and the date is really the rumored date: March, 29, 2011.

Buuut... a new Shining game will be revealed with the renewal, and...looks like it's a new Shining made by... CAMELOT!!

Again, it is just a rumor. Nothing official yet. The info I got says that Sawada contacted Camelot and they are now developing [SHINING FORCE 4].

You guys should know, Shimosato worked on Shining Force 3, and now Shimosato is the head at SEGA CS#3. You should also remember that both Shimosato and Sawada asked Camelot to work with them when Sega had decided to ressurrect the series back on the GBA era. Camelot refused completely.

Man, I'm just really excited now and about to cry if it came real

Wow, lots of rumours lately.   I really wonder where you guys pick those things up.
Ok, so the VC rumour has to stay a rumour, because the series is just too amazing to get closed down.

Furthermore, had I but known that Camelot will work on SF4, I would have spared myself the cost for this classical Austrian music CD and a special dairy free organic chocolate I’m going to send them via my SOS Campaign letter. ;) Just kidding. They will get those things anyway as it’s the least I can do to say thanks and motivate them to “shine on”. :P

Camelot just has to do SF4 now.  8-)

He is prepairing a "celebration" for the Shining series 20th Anniversary. Things he would do on March, 29:

- erase all the pages about the original series at the Shining World Portal Site, along with a renewal of the page;

- cut Camelot from Shining forever;

- cut Shining Force SOS Campaign;

If this Sawada chap wants to make comments about the SOS Campaign he can bloody well do it to me in person, and should probably read the Campaign site too as he has totally misunderstood the point and nature of it. I don't know why he thinks that the twitter account is the actual campaign.

I don't see how he can "cut Shining Force SOS Campaign" - how exactly is he going to stop us from sending our gifts and thanks to Camelot for their work on the original series? And exactly what does it have to do with him if we're celebrating Camelot's involvement with the original games?

What a total, utter wanker. Sorry. If I was in Japan I'd go and poo on his pillow.

Rant over ;) Obviously not directed at you, Storm.

Anyway, am also interested to hear where these extra Shining game titles have sprung up from?

Will have to make a backup of the Shining World portal in case this idiot goes ahead and erases the content relating to the games which made the series great in the first place.

Message to users on 2ch (10/04/11):
This message is being quoted by Japanese people on 2ch and I would like to take moment to point out to them that it was in response to rumours of nasty things Sawada had said which may or may not have been true. If Sawada really said such things about the SOS Campaign and the series then I stand by my words. If it was just a 2ch troll, then of course the words were directed at that person and not Sawada and he has no reason at all to take offense. Everything must be taken in context people, remember that. Don't just quote bits of what I say and try to use them against me out of context.

Given that none of the rumoured things actually happened, it would of course seem that these were not said by Sawada and this would in turn mean that my response is as null and void as the rumours. Stop blowing everything out of proportion and making trouble where there should be none.

Shut up Sharky! We are fighting Sawada right now

I have asked people, and yes, from some form, he can stop the Shining Force SOS Campaign. I got pissed off like some others... but since people at 2chan is tired about talking Shining, they turned into Sawada's allies >___<  Too bad!

Sadly, we can't prove surely it was Sawada posting there, but we know that those posts was made by Sawada himself and his Shining team. We know that because he has posting on 2ch some time back. And his twitter always was updated almost synchronized with things we were talking over the Sega thread at 2ch.

I have to go now, but I'll be back to this thread tomorrow ;) We are confusing now about Sawada's latest revelations. Should him erase the original series or continue it with Camelot? The only thing to do now is wait for the March, 29...

Short of him hiring a hit man to assasinate me before I post the campaign pack to Camelot, or him bribing Japanese customs officials to destroy the SOS package (which will be sent by insured, registered mail), there is absolutely nothing he can do to stop the campaign getting to Camelot. He is obviously deluding himself if he thinks he is in any position to stop someone from sending some post. Baka desu ne!

Now, we think he was just trolling EMI.

Emi is the name of the "only one" person who is trolling Sega since the launch of the SHining Project, back on the GBA era.

People believed that EMI was TAMAKI YOSHITAKA, the original designer of the series. A LOT of Shining related sites was closed due to the Emi's moves to stop the new Shining Series. Emi still alive, and I believe he/she was the one who sent email for you. Sawada told him about this 200k people to bring back the original series.

Whatever, the new Shining is rumored to appear on the 3DS or Sony's PS3.

Curiosity: Sawada bought a PS3 in January to study it. He also liked it. That's all.

So, are you just sending this campaign thing to Camelot? Because while I'm sure you want them to know that you loved their Shining games I don't think that will get any results.

Surely sending your love for Camelot Shining games to Sega would be a better idea or at least a copy of it.
Title: Re: Shining Series
Post by: Moogie on March 15, 2011, 06:16:35 am
Sega will be receiving copies of the letters while Camelot will be receiving the originals + gifts :) Half the point of the campaign is to thank Camelot for the games - so it makes sense that they should receive the best stuff ;)

At the end of the day, Sega can't/won't listen to fans for legal reasons, so the hope is that if Camelot approached them as a developer they may stand more chance of being heard than we would.

The campaign pack got sent off yesterday:
http://sos.shiningforcecentral.com/2011/03/22/the-campaign-has-been-sent/

...and I was pleasantly surprised not to find Sawada's goon squad waiting there to try to stop me ;) *lol*

In interesting news, however, Sawada has officially blocked @ShiningForceSOS from following him on twitter, which in my eyes adds credence to the recent rumours. It means he really does have a problem with the campaign, and if that's true then some of the other stuff he's said could well be true.

Edit: 23rd March 11am

An update for anyone who's interested - the SF:SOS Package has arrived with the delivery company in Tokyo, so should be reaching Camelot on Monday or Tuesday!

Anyone wanting to support the campaign still has a couple of days in which to send in their YouTube videos. It only need take you a few minutes to make one with the simple message, "Hi Camelot, I'm [name], I'm [age], from [country] and I love Shining Force!".

So, the day 29 has gone and nothing happened.

Rumors says that Sega has canceled the new Shining with Camelot due to the disasters ocurred this month here.

Officially, Sega said on twitter that they don't have any plans to commemorate the Shining 20th Anniversary beside the newest password to be used in Shining Hearts. With this password you got some pans, with the most famous word from the series (by Yogurt!)wrote on it.

Sadly, this is the only thing Sega is doing to commemorate the series 20th anniversary...

I also hope it’s just a delay. Since there was no real official celebration and considering how much SEGA donated for the victims a cancellation of the rumoured 20th anniversary title is of course possible. Maybe they didn’t want to celebrate because of the current disaster? It would be totally comprehensible. Well, let’s hope for the best and await further news.

Sega and Camelot has received your post Moogie.

The annonymous guy (obviously producer Sawada... or not) said "Moogie has entered the worldwide blacklist of Sega", SOA does not wants to put any efforts on the Shining series and everything we done was inutile.

I don't know... I feel that he is lying again. From past rumors, looks like Shimosato (the boss at SEGA CS3) is really wanting to make a new Shining with Camelot.

Although, Camelot has posted nothing about the 20th anniversary of the series on their site...

I have no idea why anyone would believe that an annoymous guy on 2Chan, site known for people trolling and talking crap would be Sawada or anyone from Sega at all.

Sega does not have a 'world wide black list' and I highly doubt they would put any fans on it if they did.

This whole think reeks of BS...

Hmm, I've not seen the one talking about me. I've seen a post on 2chan where "Sawada" (since we still don't know for sure it's him - although the fact that he blocked me on twitter for a while might suggest that it is) said something about messages from foreign fans being thrown away.

It would surprise me if I'm on any kind of blacklist as all I've done is show the love :) Sega Japan have in the past been full of praise for my work on Shining Force Central - I have a letter from them about it from years ago.

Well, whatever. I don't really care what Sawada thinks. I was just glad that the package reached Camelot safely. I hope the gifts gave the Takahashis a smile :D

Moogie, how are you following that thread on 2ch? Please, do not post there! Also, don't listen everything "Emi" says. He or she is a bit dumb... most of the time doing things wrong, making Sawada more upset about all these talk about the original series.

Personally, I'm pretty sure its Sawada posting on 2ch. And Sharky is wrong; Japanese developers from all companies are always watching and posting on 2ch. They can't stay away from there, since its the largest Japanese games forum EVER! Even Nintendo developers posts there.

The guy at the Sega thread started talking about the package from Moogie; how do you explain that? Of course is someone inside Sega. I've heard about Sawada's Shining Team developers posting on the thread, since they were upset about the foreign people disliking their new brand Shining games. LOL!!!

He also said that Sega's president (Usui Okitane) was upset too because Shining Force SOS Campaign was making things hard for the newest Shining series games. I LOL at this too XDD
The 180k people who bought Shining Hearts are not that satisfied with the final product. LOLOLOLOL! Sawada himself is commiting suicide(lol)! XDDD

If Sega liked your site as you told, I think he is lying completely then. Nothing to worry about. Im also cant see Sega destroying a fan site, especially the only one (and maybe the largest) for the Shining series.

Last, I pissed off Sawada saying he cant make a game to sell worldwide, and can only sell it to otakus in Japan. HAHAHA! I've got him on the stomach XD

Title: Re: Shining Series

Well, we didn't send a 'package' to Sega, only a letter and CD, so I wonder if this person is for real. Besides, the campaign website & forum clearly says about the packages/letters which were sent. It's not secret info, and even the contents of the letter were posted at SFC.

I don't see how the SOS campaign is making anything hard for anyone, or why they even care what we 'stupid foreigners' think when they develop games for Japan.

Luckily, I can't post on 2ch as I'm not in Japan ;) I'm just keeping an eye on the thread and trying to translate through Google/Babelfish - so what I'm reading may not be exactly what is being said.

Gotta go for now, busy evening ahead!

Why would they be ripping into you Moogie? Shining Force Central is an awesome fansite that has stood the test of time; the whole fan package idea is brilliant too.

Surely they aren't fans of the terrible new direction the Shining series has taken?

For me, the best think about Shining Force (besides the SRPG game play) was that it pretty much blatantly ripped off the great fantasy books like Lord of the Rings or like The Chronicles of Narnia etc. It was very much Tolken inspired fantasy without being so dull and 'manly' as rubbish like Dragon Age. It was like a Japanese take on the Tolken style, the RIGHT kind of Japanese take.

Now it has turned into something so mediocre, so generic in style with such a terrible plots and script it could be any one of hundreds of cheap Japanese animations, with every god awful anime cliché you could imagine piled in.

To be fair if you are uncool amongst those kinds of people, shit, I’d consider it a blessing.
That Otaku, Weeaboo nonsense has flooded the Japanese videogame and animation industry with mediocre rubbish and it is a shame Shining Force has been caught up in that piss.

Shining Force Central is definitely a wonderful place.  8-)

Let me try to sum up the events and please correct me wherever it is necessary, because this whole issue is quite confusing. I will also express a few words that I feel have to be said.

In Japan the “old” and “new” Shining fans have a long-established fight at 2ch. Because of the insider information of one particular poster at 2ch the “old” Shining fans believe this someone is connected with or is directly from Sawada’s team or even is Mr. Sawada himself. This particular poster at 2ch talked very negative about the whole SOS-Campaign. A few fans at Shining Force Central felt the assumption of the old Japanese fans had verified when Mr Sawada suddenly blocked the SOS-Campaign Twitter. A few people from SFC posted their private (rushed and emotionally charged?) opinion at Shining Force Central. The particular 2ch insider later spread rumours about a SEGA blacklist against SFC and acted xenophobe. Curious: Each SOS-Campaign video got 1 thumb down too - who takes his time to dislike every video?

Moogie in person and our whole community at Shining Force Central have now come into the firing line of the old and new Shining fans in Japan. Surprisingly, Mr. Sawada recently contacted Moogie via Twitter and asked what the fans want him to do with the series, but also expressed his low opinion on SFC and Moogie and accused her of trolling.

It’s still to be clarified what makes Mr. Sawada so upset and what the purpose of his question was.

a) Is the SOS-Campaign upsetting him? Why? The Campaign is not a personal attack against Mr. Sawada and never was meant this way! Most people don’t even know Mr. Sawada and in the EU for example we only had a remake of SF1 and Shining Soul 1+2 after Camelot left and that’s it. The Shining series has no newer titles here, but the fan base is still good and waiting. Furthermore, there always has been enough room for Shining titles with different genres. The campaign is an important act from fans around the world and shows our love and the potential we see in the Shining series. It was directed to Camelot, Climax and Sega, but mostly to Camelot, because they primarily worked on the legendary titles we know and love. The 20th Anniversary would have been a proper date for a comeback of Camelot and a new SRPG. Again: This is not against Mr. Sawada. There has to be a way for SEGA to work together with Camelot or even work side by side on different Shining titles.

b) Would Mr. Sawada be upset because of some private comments or the heated debate that’s going on? What exactly was said that upsets him so much? We don’t know. Why should he take some rushed postings so serious? It has to be a big misunderstanding and/or the “fighting” of the Japanese fans has escalated in a way that is damaging the art of conversation.

The actions of the international Shining fans were overt as they expressed their love and took their time to write individual letters, make videos or create/buy presents. Our love and thanks are now out there and nobody expected or wanted hate and misunderstanding to be a result of that.

I hope the misunderstanding can be resolved.

That seems to cover everything quite well.

I must admit I'd not even heard of 2ch until all this was brought to my attention and I certainly didn't know there was a longstanding fight between old and new fans of the series there. That explains a bit!

I hadn't spotted the thumbsdown on the campaign videos - it's not quite all of them, but the majority of Brits and Americans seem to have had it, while only a few of the non-native English speakers have been rated down.

I don't quite understand why old fans of the series dislike SFC/me - and I don't know for sure if that's the case or not. I've no way of knowing which poster is of which 'side' at 2ch. Hell, I can't even tell for the most part which posts are by the same people.

I also hope the misunderstanding can be resolved, but at the moment I'm so busy with the final preps for my wedding (just over 2 weeks away!) and the SFC site relaunch that I can't allow myself to get too bogged down in all this confusion.

I can't imagine any Shining Force fan disliking SFC. I know that if it wasn't for SFC I would never have been able to play SFIII trilogy in English, which is probably my favourite game series of all time after Shenmue 1 and 2. I definitely support any movement to bring Shining Force back to it's former glory.

Haha, awesome! I was going to ask if there was anything Shining Force related but didn't know how to word it with out making it sound like I expected it of you lol.

I'm glad it will be Shining Force related though!

How does your future husband feel about your Shining force obsession?
Title: Re: Shining Series
Post by: Moogie on April 12, 2011, 11:51:31 am
Well in the four years we've been together, my Shining obsession hasn't really been at the forefront of my life - so he hasn't really seen the half of it ;) That said, he's got something of an idea of how much it means to me from the amount of work I put into the campaign, the amount of boxes containing my collection and also the time I've been racking up rebuilding SFC! I don't think it bothers him, as we also have a joint obsession (fishing) which gives us a lot of time together. When I spend time without him, doing Shining stuff, he has his own hobbies to enjoy by himself too. Shining is a part of me, so if he wants me then the Shiny stuff comes with it.

I keep insisting he has to play through at least one SF battle before the wedding ;) That said, he and I dated when we were teenagers and I'm pretty sure he played a battle or two of the original SF back then - but he doesn't remember (how can anyone forget a Shining experience?!) so I may have to get him onto the ol' Saturn in the next week!

I'd love to have a bit more of an SF theme to the wedding, but no-one else at the wedding is an SF nut ;) We're getting married in a castle though, so that's kinda Shiny :) Let's hope there are no guest appearances from Darksol ;)

Thanks for the post Skateboard. This makes completely sense now.

This "fight" exists since long time before I've joined it, but now they are trying to put all the whole thing over me, saying I am the one who "disgraced" the Shining Force SOS Campaign. What?    Emi is the one who started it all, since I have never seen this campaign before Emi or someone has posted it on 2ch.

Someone from Japan has started posting things on 2ch and I have just translated some parts and posted it here, on Segabits. Then, Moogie has appeared. I have never seen Moogie before it...

I know they are seeing this, so I will tell you, I'm not a friend of Moogie, I'm not supporting the SOS Campaign, I'm a big fan from the original series and I'm not satisfied with the newest games from the Shining series, like Shining Hearts.

Of course, I'm not an enemy of Moogie, and I completely like what she is doing for the series, especially the SOS Campaign. I was afraid that the whole world had forgot this "brilliant" RPG series from Sega, but now I know they have not

Some people there at 2ch. thinks I am an enemy from Sega and Sawada, but they are just trolls, since I was just giving my opinions about Sega's and Sawada's productions. Only because I'm a fan of the series I have to love everything they does with the series? Oh, c'mon...  :|

Even a huge part of the 180k people who bought Shining Hearts are not happy with that game. You can see negative comments from a lot of people everywhere.

Someone told me its just a huge fan of Sawada trying to beat me; ok, that's fine. But he can not stop me from giving my opinions and I'll continue doing what I was previously doing: watching everything Sega is doing with the series, and showing it for the whole world since Sega is not worried about supporting the series worldwide anymore.

I don't want to see the Shining series joining the hall of dead series of Sega. They have enough series dead at the moment.

Be prepared, I will make a huge post for the series next month, when I will got some vacation XD

Glad to know at least one person in Japan doesn't hate me :)

Seems like things are dying down on the SOS/Moogie front at 2ch now, which is good. Maybe after a while, Mr Sawada will chill out and realise that he's misunderstood things.

I'm not on the mood to join the campaign, but I hope you continue with this. Till now, I think this and your site are the last thing keeping the original series alive.

There is also a fanmade remake for Shining Force 2, made by a brazilian fan, and it is really looking great!

I wish there was more Japanese fans from the original series to help us...
Title: Re: Shining Series

Renatobs game (SFII remake) does look amazing, and I've been waiting to try the demo for a couple of years now. It's the reason I bought a DS - well that and Shining Force: Feather.

There's also a very promising SF style game engine in development which is coming along very well.

Maybe it will come down to fan projects to keep the old style games alive. While I doubt I'll be running any more campaigns (although I said that the last time too!) I can imagine I'll still be running SFC even when I'm on my deathbed ;)

Though it seems the folks at 2ch would hate to see that, they seem to be talking about illegal usage of pictures and getting SFC shut down and stuff. Well, if the law decided SFC has to be shut down for those reasons, pretty much every other fansite (not just Shining) on the web would have to be shut down too. I don't see that happening any time soon!

Years ago (mid 90's) I asked Sega for permission to use artwork from the Shining games and at the time they had no policy regarding the use of these things on websites - the internet was still so young back then. They said they would come to a decision soon. They never asked me to remove the content then, they haven't since. In fact Sega USA wanted to promote the new Shining titles through SFC and offered me the games for free as well as posters etc for prizes. Unfortunately I was never able to take them up on the offer as I was in the middle of a difficult relationship breakdown (in which I lost my home, and a lot of money) and had no time for the site. I'm sure if they had a problem with any of SFC's content they would never have tried to start a relationship with SFC!

It seems like there is far to much info and original pictures for it to be fake... It may be but they have gone to some serious lengths to convince people it's real if it is fake...

Quote
The game's battle system is called "Concerto." This "strategy active real time battle system" is said to be evolved from Sakura Wars' ARMS system and Valkyria Chronicle's BLiTZ system. You make use of swords, bows and magic in a battle system that places importance on character cooperation -- hence the name "concerto."

This makes me very interested!

no need for sakura taisen to continue, i mean really that's it for the franchise!
the team need to focus on great RPGs with world-wide appeal.

Killed Valkryia Chronicles???!
i thought you have never been a fan yourself! you hate great RPGs like Skies and Val
anyway, how they killed it exactly? by bringing it to PSP?
yeah i would kill for a Console VC but also VCIII is a must anyway.

in my eyes the new 7th dragoon is looking better than the original.
better graphics and presentation and better character design.
also it seems that there is an animated attacks for the enemies ... thank god!

Storm you're full of baka chan crap!

Sakura Taisen is over because the fad is over, just like one day the Vocaloid fad will be over. (What does Sawada san have to do with this?)

Valkyria Chronicles is far from dead... VC3 was quite widely regarded as just as good as the first game. (What does Sawada san have to do with this?)

7th Dragon 2 looks, if anything much better than the original... The enemies are real 3D models now and not just 2D art that shakes about... It looks a ton better.
(What does Sawada san have to do with this?)

Finally, the Shining series has been dead for years, if this game turns out to be ANYTHING like the supposed 'leaked' info it'll be 100% better then anything thats come out of the Shining series in the last decade! (Thanks Sawada, you're awesome!)

Yes, Sakura Taisen WAS a great series. (So are those Project Diva games apparently) but that isnt the point.

In the 90's Saura Taisen was massively popular not just videogames but TVs series, Anime movies, plays and all sorts. It was a huge fad much like that Vocaloid Miku thing is in Japan today but the fad has warn off. The Sakura Taisen series isn't worth bringing back. I believe Valkyria Chronicles is a good replacement though... A good Shining Force could be too if this is real.
Title: Re: Shining Series

You are the baka here ;p

There are a lot of rumors about Sega discontinuing the Valkyria series since the poor sales of Valkyria 3. It was not good sales for Sega. Also, the producer of the series already told us they are not developing another one any time soon.

 Look this:

Phantasy Star team(original series)→ Sakura Taisen team → Valkyria team → Shining team now.

They are all from Sega CS 3, but Shining games were developed almost outside Sega. The evidences tells they are now working on that leaked new Shining title. It means no more Valkyria any time soon, no more chances to Sega develop another Sakura Taisen game any time soon.

7th Dragon is about hunting dragons; new leaked Shining game is about killing the ancient dragons from Draconia Kingdom...

I'm not saying Sawada has killed those series himself, but Sega done it.

Sawada is not awesome, so shut up Sharky ;p He is full of crap ideas. He is good at marketing, since he is from the marketing division of Sega, but he is horrible as a game creator/producer.

Sakura Taisen series are completely profiting for Sega even now. Have you seen how much Sakura Taisen pachinko machines has sold? It has made more money for Sega than Dragon Quest 9 for Square-Enix!!! Sega has just too many issues with the games from the series; it has too many copyrights to pay to others. But Sega still promoting the series, doing the musical show every year, releasing goods and cds for it everytime.

Another issue is Red Entertainment. They were bought by a Chinese company, and now nobody knows what will happen with the Sakura Taisen series, but last I've heard, their deal with Sega was that Sega was Red's primaly company to hold whatever new project they had using Sakura Taisen; if Sega refused it they were free to show the project to another company.

I'm fine with Phantasy Star series since it is now handled by another team and has no huge links with the original series and still selling very well.

Shining series was killed! Completely! Sawada tried to keep some link with the original series, but it does not works.

People got excited every time he announces a new Shining game; it got released, people only complain about everything. It's the "SHINING CYCLE", the same shit Sonic was used to.

And now Sharky is on that cycle. Good luck for you ;p

Well, if the Shining series is on the same cycle as Sonic, then perhaps there is hope yet. Sonic Generations looks awesome. Maybe one day we'll see Shining Generations and it will be what we all hope for...
Looking forward to hearing any official info about the leaked Shining title, am hoping it will be somewhat like Feather from what has been suggested so far.

On the current status of Shining series, STORM is right imo; is also shareable the judgment on Sawada, in fact I have always preferred Shimosato(obviously regard the last ten years Shining games), but is SEGA which gave him the position.

But the fact that the new game will likely be developed by the Valkyria team or even just part of it, makes me extremely confident in its final quality, maybe in SEGA have decided to honor the anniversary of the series at least on this side.

Too bad they are not going to celebrate the 20th, but Sawada is looking to celebrate "his series 10th".

On the leaked material you can see it saying "past characters from Shining series", but only the ones made by Sawada are on the images.

On that special Famitsu for Sega you can't see any character from the original series; instead, they have put Maxima on it. On the page dedicated to the series, only Sawada is interviewed and Famitsu has not made any cite about its 20th annyversary.

Sawada also said on his twitter that they don't have any other plans (apart from that ridiculous pan password to be used in Hearts) to commemorate the series 20th; lately, he said it was time to make something about "the new series 10th"...

They are going to, probably, even ignoring the games made by Shimosato and Sega AM2 and Sega Mobile.

Rumors said Sega was not sure about this new game on the PSP or NGP, yet.

This "Shining Cycle" is getting ridiculous and worse by the time. They have not made ANY really good game yet for the franchise. But I'm curious to see what will happen with this new one title, though ;p

Of course I will buy it! ;pppp

I loved Tears (haven't yet had time to play Wind) - thought controlling 2 characters at once was great fun, and the game lookeed far more Shining than NEO or EXA (which I had no patience for).

...and I could sing the praises of Feather for hours on end, absolutely adore that game - if only it had been released in English, I know it would have been a hit here in the West.

All the 5 titles sux!

Tears, Wind, Neo & EXA. Plus Hearts...

None have the Shining feeling. Bad musics, bad SE, bad systems and gameplay. Bad story. Bad programming. Bad designing.

Most of the things on them are BAD!

I had more fun playing the ones for the cell phones.

Ah, Feather was good at the beginning, but I quit playing it on the middle. It got boring...

Oh, I was also playing Cross Raid. It's not good too. And it's a waste of money. Too much expensive to play on the arcades a title which is inferior compaired with a lot of good games on the home consoles.

Shining Force II – 1993 Developer Interviews

In October of 1993, we finally released Shining Force II to the world.
Because the development ran in parallel with both Shining Force Gaiden games, it was, if I’m being perfectly honest, an incredibly difficult project.
Nor were the in-house development challenges the only ones we faced; on top of it all, our rivals on the Super Famicom, Final Fantasy V and Dragon Quest V, had also just been released.
The psychological burden of knowing we’d end up being criticized for the quality of our game in comparison to these big league RPGs made the Shining Force II development far from relaxing.
Nevertheless, the experience of having endured those many pressures made crossing the finish line all the sweeter.
When I look back at Shining Force II today, there are still points I’m unsatisfied with, but overall, I think we managed to create a game that fully satisfied us in that moment of time.

SEGA Game Gear Micro Hardware Review – Bite-Sized Nostalgia

Visually, the yellow model with tis green buttons just pops and looks incredibly cool. It’s a shame that it is also the least import friendly.
Pre-loaded with three Shining Force games (Shining Force Gaiden: Ensei Jashin no Kuni e, Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya and Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict) as well as the puzzle/RPG Nazo Puyo Arle no Roux,
this is the model that Japanese players are likely to spend the most time playing and westerners are going to find the most inaccessible.
None of the titles are pick up and play unless you can read Japanese.
Unless you are a hardcore Shining Force fan, or can read Japanese, avoid this model unless you are buying the full set.

I love Tony Taka's Shining series, but kinda dissapointed that many of them were only available in Japanese, so I haven't played them all.

My favorite is the latest, Shining Resonance Refrain.
I love the character development (they are all unlikable at first, but somehow as the story progress, their characteristic started to change) and how calm & relaxing the soundtrack is.

Agreed it's a great game and the soundtrack is amazing.

I've played all in the modern reboot with the exception of Shining Road and Shining Wind X what with them being Japan Mobile games.

They cover a lot of plot points.

That's neat. I presume you can read Japanese then?

You know sometimes I don't get why some Shining Forces fans hates modern series to the point of always bashing them in the SEGA Facebook or Twitter page whenever it mentioned.
Kinda like how some Shin Megami Tensei fans hates Persona series.
As for me, both series could co-exist together, like 3D Sonic and 2D Sonic.

Its said that the reason that Shining Force: Heroes of Light and Darkness has suspended development is because the lack of funds and how long the negotiations for the Shining Force IP have taken with SEGA.
According to Game Braves, SEGA never finalized the use of the Shining Force IP or at least full use of the IP.
We know many classic characters were making their return in this game but the company also wanted to make original characters.

Side question, would you say the Shining series can be Sega's counterpoint to Nintendo's Fire Emblem series?

Yes. In fact it used to be but Shining Force series relied on Camelot while relationship between Camelot and SEGA wasn't good anymore after SEGA refuses to localize Shining Force III Scenario 2 & 3.
(to get the true ending we need all three episodes and only Scenario 1 was released in the west)

Shining Force III Scenario 1 (localized) :

Shining Force III Scenario 2 & 3 (Japan only) :

What's once considered as SEGA's loyal second party, since then Camelot decided to move away from Sega completely and have since worked mostly for Nintendo.

Sonic is often compared as the counterpoint to Mario and I often wonder what other Sega franchises, especially characters can be compared.

I don't know why in the end they decided to change them.
May be they think too much Shining will kill them?
Centy I can see why compared to Zelda, especially LttP.

But wasn't Landstalker from Climax Entertainment who were not part of Sega?

Camelot and Sonic! Software Planning weren't also part of SEGA.
Although Sonic! Software Planning was established with an investment from Sega, and took its name from Sega's most popular mascot.
(Later Camelot and Sonic! Software Planning merged into one company)
They're considered as second parties since they developed the game for SEGA and published by SEGA.

Games that Will Cost You a Kidney: Shining Force III

It is a hard to find the classic in good used condition, meaning with case and manual.
The game can cost you on Amazon up to $1000 when it is all said and done.
Now, true collectors might be better off on Ebay, where a new factory sealed copy of the game is available for a whopping $6000 (true kidney money).

A'ight, let's compare some Shining characters to Fire Emblem characters as counterparts. I need them for this collage thing I'm working on. Tell me if you agree with any of them.

Hiro (https://shining.fandom.com/wiki/Hiro) = Marth (https://fireemblem.fandom.com/wiki/Marth), Both are the protagonists of the very first games in their respected series.
Warrior (https://shining.fandom.com/wiki/Warrior_(Shining_Soul)) or Max (https://shining.fandom.com/wiki/Max_(Shining_Force_I)) = Roy (https://fireemblem.fandom.com/wiki/Roy), Shining Soul debut on the Game Boy Advance and released around the same year (in Japan). Shining Force I, while released for the Mega Drive, was also remade for the Game Boy Advance. Which one should I pick?
Yuma Ilburn (https://shining.fandom.com/wiki/Yuma_Ilburn) = Ike (https://fireemblem.fandom.com/wiki/Ike), Resonance came out for the PS3 which was a seventh gen console, The Wii also being a seventh gen console. (I would of chosen the ninth Shining game in the main series, but there's so many spin-offs, remakes and scenarios I dunno which one that would be.

I need suggestions for SSBU Fire Emblem: Awakening characters. I mean, I have seven spaces to fill on my collage and I figure they should all be Shining-Fire Emblem characters.

SEGA Genesis Mini 2 will be in much shorter supply (around one-tenth) than original

My questions about Genesis Mini 2 shipments were forwarded to Sega of Japan's corporate office, which eventually confirmed that the new miniaturized console was a "Japan-only project" for the company.
"The Sega Genesis Mini 2 could only be produced in small numbers due to the global semiconductor shortage," reads a letter from the Sega president's office, so the company opted to produce a small Western batch of Genesis Mini 2s alongside its order of Mega Drive Mini 2s.
"The number of units for this project makes up around one-tenth of the total for the previous Genesis Mini," the letter states.

I grew up with Shining series so I'm still biased toward Shining series.
Fire Emblem feels like what if we put anime tropes into Shining Force gameplay.
It's not a bad thing but I'd rather play Persona or 7th Dragon series if I want anime tropes in games.

I only played the one, maybe two odd games from each of them so I fear my opinions maybe biased with lack of experience.

I just figure Shining is to Fire Emblem as Sonic is to Mario.

Why Shining Force?
Why not Valkyria Chronicles is the one compared to Fire Emblem?
Valkyria Chronicles is also strategy game and nowadays the franchise's given spotlight more by SEGA than Shining series?

Both Shining and VC? Game-wise may be, but appearance-wise VC still got cameo and toys.

Whoops, then yeah probably, though all Fire Emblem games on NES and SNES were only released in Japan.
They weren't published in the west at that time.
The first Fire Emblem game to be localized in the west was the Game Boy Advance version in 2003.
10 years after the first Shining Force game released in the west.

Yeah, Fire Emblem became popular after Melee, which is what caused Nintendo to start bringing Fire Emblem games West.
Before Meele, Shining Force's still more popular franchise than Fire Emblem even for western Nintendo fans.
Sadly that's not the case anymore.

Yeah... just wish I was less nostalgic and depressed over the fact Sega just no longer on parr with Nintendo as they used to.
Having one dominant market left over until Fire Emblem got over here.

As of January 1 2024, Steam will officially stop supporting the Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 operating systems.

After that date, the Steam Client will no longer run on those versions of Windows.
In order to continue running Steam and any games or other products purchased through Steam, users will need to update to a more recent version of Windows.
This change is required as core features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows.
In addition, future versions of Steam will require Windows feature and security updates only present in Windows 10 and above.

Shining Force 2: Return to Grans

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9geIrmeIeo

Quote
Return to Grans is a more challenging version of the original game, which also features a better narrative as well as improved visuals.

Dialogue in the game has been vastly reworked - about 40% of all text passages have been altered, replacing the oftentimes bland writing of the original.
Most of the not so appealing graphics in vanilla SF2 have been improved/replaced, such as the battle sprites of the Vicars or the Archers.
Difficulty and balance have been reworked by tweaking enemies’ stats, skills and numbers on the battlefield. Battles will usually appear familiar due to mostly the same enemies and setups, but will often play out quite differently thanks to new abilities, magic spells and some surprises.
Gameplay-wise, the hack will require you to play more tactical; careful positioning and a well-thought-out composition of your party are more important than in the original game.

Someone has posted pictures Landstalker: Heart of Diamond, a 1997 fan book which includes a summary of the story as well as drawings of the various characters drawn by Yoshitaka Tamaki for the cancelled 2nd episode.

Link : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qdSGcia64xCQisZHn2FFHl-b-wAeJ0LG/view?fbclid=IwAR0jgdxpkKBBFLQoQkk7FsZxG9hO_EKSELH3bXwnk5gjKeRVcukDj1PfqCk

It says that Lyle gained the ability to transform into various animals after receiving a magic wand, that Zak, Karla and her gang and the Duke of Mercator were back in the game and that the story was to take place in Gamul, a place we discover in the opening of the first episode.
Lyle and Friday are given a mission by the minister of Gamul to rescue a woman imprisoned in a diamond, presumably held by a demon king hiding in a dungeon and trying to conquer Gamul with his monster troops. Lyle refuses but goes after the demon king anyway.
Friday is kidnapped by the Duke of Mercator and the big bad of the story turns out to be the one who had given his task to Lyle, the imprisoned girl and the demon king being in fact a couple of beings of the same species, who have been targeted by the minister.

SEGA Saturn Mini console hasn't been ruled out, but don't expect it anytime soon

Quote
Speaking to the Japanese publication Famitsu (translated by VGC), SEGA president Yukio Sugino stated that the "Sega Saturn is surprisingly high performance," admitting that "the difficulty of miniaturisation is also high."
Sugino added that it may take a while for a Sega Saturn Mini to hit store shelves, but he seems keen to collaborate with teams who know the hardware inside and out: "I’d like to think about it when we’re in a situation where we can openly develop it together with people who have always loved the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast."

Besides those games, he would also illustrate for games like FEDA: The Emblem of Justice (both the Super Famicom original and its Sega Saturn remake), FEDA 2: White Surge, Alundra, and Assault Suits Vaiken.
