Amazingly you'll get one of your wish soon ... since SEGA has teased a new VR game!
May be Year of (Killer) Rabbit is your lucky year.

SEGA creates CSVRS teaser website and social accounts – possible Cosmic Smash VR reveal?

Article : https://segabits.com/blog/2023/01/23/sega-creates-csvrs-teaser-website-and-social-accounts-possible-cosmic-smash-vr-reveal/
I think if Sega wants to experiment with the VR scene, there best bet would be a "Sega Superstars VR" game, though if Cosmic Smash will be made for PC and console VRs then that's still a good way to go.

My concern is Sega will have tunnel vision all over again. People will say "The VR is good but the game is not" or "The game is decent but the controls/VR holds it back" and Sega will be like "Well clearly this is just a bad game. Instead of making it marketable let's just pretend it never happened."

But, if they made "Sega Superstars VR", a series of mini-games that's more experimental with what it's market for over reliant on it then not only would the audience not quickly be put off by it but Sega can gauge feedback and response for it as well.

Though if Cosmic Smash will be released, I think it would be best if it had limited marketing and low expectancy. I mean Cosmic Smash doesn't look too different from wall squash but with targets. They're not making a Shakespeare VR game here.

SEGA sadly doesn't interested in making VR game, though that doesn't mean they're abandoning it.
As the article said, this one once again being done by third party who has experience with VR games before.
Just like Space Channel 5 VR and VR Figure From Shining before by another third party.

This VR version of Cosmic Smash is now done by England based VR developer Wolf & Wood

It's good they're not abandoning VR because of a few bad shots in the dark. Wood & Wolf wouldn't of been my choice given they mostly made enclosed-space VR games but I heard The Exorcist: Legion, one of their exploration horror VR games is good.

I firmly stand in the believe there is a large audience for the VR market. The only issue is most game developers don't really know how to make VR games. The ones I played are usually sandbox or encased area sort of games.

For example, "GoldenEye VR", it's not a fan game... (I think) but a mod recreated for various VR games such as Palvov VR, Half-Life: Alyx and BONEWORKS. GoldenEye was an N64 game and considered one of the most cult-classics of the 007 games and fans have made attempt to VR it.

Another example in mind is the original Wolfenstein game which had a fan-remake in VR.

So if it comes to lack of creativity or originality it's not like there isn't a lack of past games that are not ideal for VR.
Heck I've had lots of fun hours playing Garry's Mod with a particular mod called "VRMod", it does exactly what it sounds like. I've replayed old maps I haven't touched in awhile for fun, more immersive experiences with VRMod, or use VRMod just to explore maps for fun.

Actually SEGA has tried VR thing too recently, not stand alone game but a VR mode update.
They added VR mode Update for Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA X HD so the game includes PS VR content.
The update didn't impact much to the sales so I kinda understand if they focus the development to something else that could make more money.

I don't know how big VR market there in UK, but that wasn't the case here.
I can count friends who had VR peripheral with my fingers.

Aaah, I don't habe that game. I got two left thumbs when it comes o rhythm games. But it's nice they delved into it more.

Still think a "Sega Superstars VR" game would be a better way to start though.

If Cosmic Smash VR is success, may be SEGA would let the developer to make it since SEGA seems unwilling to do it themself.
Just like SEGA did with Demiurge with SEGA Heroes.

Atlus-Published Vanillaware new fantasy game project at end of development, George Kamitani says

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wr7_RTHy16c

Quote
Kamitani continued, “Lastly, the title I’m working on right now won’t be finished for several years, but once that big title I’m telling you about is finished, I should get some development staff, so development of my project will finally move into full swing.”
Platforms and a release window for the new title have yet to be announced. The only confirmed detail is that it will be published by ATLUS.
