Title: You sunk my Battleship Kevin Butler! - The PSN is down topic
Post by: Sega Uranus on April 26, 2011, 01:33:20 pm
Six days in, PSN is still down and Sony has given no timeframe as to when it will return. The PSBlog is hilariously scattered with updates that give literally no info and no time frame has been given as to when it will be back.

But it gets funnier.

All of Sony's online services are down. I am not joking, they were literally all on the same server! Even features like Netflix are not usable at all on PlayStation 3 and even stuff like their Viao computers. I had no idea how out of control this was.

While it sucks that none of us can get on to get what we want or do anything with it online - Especially when some games require you to sign into the PSN to access them at all. I cannot help but laugh that Microsoft had a free Xbox Live weekend for Easter too, just such awful timing for Sony.

So what is all behind this? Most sources lead to hackers finding a way to be accepted into a developer accounts that had full access to everything. Apparently it was as easy as a four step process (searches on Google will give you all that people did right on the first page) that required Sony to find a way to completely re-write their tech.

And I just noticed that every time my PlayStation 3 crashes (happens a lot) it asks if I want to send the information to Sony as to how to fix it... You know they are lying about that feature now.

I don't know if I have ever played a PS3 game online, and I have 4 machines hooked up to the TV that can run Netflix, so it has not been any kind of hardship for me.  Mostly I use PSN for downloading PSP games.

I'm not really worried. I mostly use the PSN to download the occasional game or watch Netflix, so I'm not one of those people who use online multiplayer all the time.

I don't think I've played any multiplayer on PSN, but it's been really annoying not being able to get on to check out demos and the like.

Some games require an online connection, stuff like Warhawk is obvious, but some of Capcom's downloadable releases require connection to the network at all times.

I am not effected by it either really, but the fact that no timeframe has been given is really not helpful at all. Sony themselves have declined to comment at all too, if I was really into the service I think I would be pissed.

I hope it comes back before Virtua Tennis 4 is out. I can see myself wasting so many hours on that online.

I'm pretty bummed that I can't use netflix on my PS3 (not bummed enough to bother downloading it on my Wii though).

I just really want it back up so I can sync my Portal 2 data with Steam.

I noticed that the slim has one issue with crashing that bothers me... its not really crashing, but its annoying:

When you buy something or download a demo, you click back, back to get to the other menue... it takes 2 minutes to load.... FFFU

Really? I can access Netflix. What I do is when it says to log in I just tell it to, when it tells you it failed to load hit O and Netflix will continue loading, it will do it again, but just rinse and repeat, find your selection in Netflix and select it. Once the show/movie begins to play it will no longer ask you to log in.

Been rewatching the entirey of Cheers on PS3 this way.

Yeah Netflix works. Just keep signing in.

I think the biggest issue with this.. is the misinformation. My brother says most people in his school are saying that PSN is dead forever. Like really?

Sony finally put up a FAQ:
http://us.playstation.com/support/answe ... ?a_id=2356 (http://us.playstation.com/support/answer/index.htm?a_id=2356)

Some good stuff as to why they are barely telling us. They also said that they sent the mainstream media the information about the attack to inform customers. That is why my Dad's Spanish news station is talking about it...

This was all over the radio yesterday, talk of user's information being compromised and credit card fraud warnings. Very bad press for Sony. Those guys are made of teflon though, it'll probably just slide right off them.

If credit card info is honestly open I am done with Sony, I was done with MS after 3 hardware failures in less than half a year, I will be done with Sony if my CC # was compromised. Some people might call this fanboyism, I call it being an educated consumer. I don't keep buying a car make that produces lemons do I?

If this is the way it plays out from here on out it's PC and Nintendo for me.

They all have their flaws, 360's high failure rate, which appears to be resolved, but charging for XBL is BS. Sony's launch price and now this breach.

Then there's Nintendo and the no-games syndrome  :x Desolate wasteland on Wii right now. Poor thing is gonna go out with a whimper instead of a bang, at least it won't be like Cube though where its' last relevant game is released on another system first.

Yeah, not so worried about my address being out there. It is public record anyway. What I'm pissed about is the passwords. That is about it. Though I'm now going to have different passwords for everything. Use pre-paid cards for EVERYTHING online.

Made me think, that everything online gets hacked and why should I trust companies with my money. Sony or not.

This is pretty shocking on SONY part and a huge dent to PSN. It's been all over the news (most of it rather unfairly) The worst part is SONY should have come clean straight away, instead of just trying to hide the news for a week

They suggest they where not hiding it and to be honest. I think what really happen is they found someone on their network, shut down PSN and then got someone to do research. Should they have told everyone they MIGHT have had their information stolen?

Yes.

Did they? Well, no. That would look bad, hacking looks bad. The issue here is we rely on them heavily. I suggest not giving control of your credit card information to any online shop. Use pre-paid cards and only use your CC if you can personally swipe it.

This goes for Xbox too. They can secure it all they want, all systems are breakable. Plus, I had a really bad experience with taking my CC info (when I used it a long ass time ago) off my gamertag. I basically called in, they said it was off and a year later I check when buying a game and its there... :?

I would say just don't save your CC in your account, Steam gives the option, not sure about consoles. Either way, Visa insures any fraudulent charges on my debit. Kind of annoying as I have boycotted DLC on consoles, but made an exception for Castle Crashers. Still I don't think I saved my card.

You can, but what if Sony keeps the numbers on their servers? I know they were not compromise. Still. Companies do that. If a company goes down, do you trust visa with your life savings?

Still pre-paid cards are easiest to handle, imo.

Why the need to bring Xbox into it ?, Lets stop the fanboy games.

SONY knew the score and tried to hide for a week and it's really backfired on them. Yes all systems get hacked (even the Pentagon) but SONY lost out big on the PR fron, but not coming clean sooner, never mind allowing  someone to access everyone data and passwords/DOB is a massive fail on SONY part and going to take a while to rebuild any confidence in PSN and this will be set back to all those in the industry wanting to go to a Digital  format for games , be that SONY or MS

It looks pretty weak from what I saw. I doubt it will make it to court. I don't know how to join, but if it gets going, I think Sony legally has to notify all PSN users about it.

The most we get is 20 dollars. Get some whiskey and take it easy for the weekend.

edit: If this is true, shit will not be good for Sony.

Doubt it. I think the easiest thing for them to do is give all users 3 months of plus. IF you have plus they tack 3 more months on.

A few things suck. Like you can use PSN or DLC when subscription ends. But most PSN games I beat 100% and don't play again. I own about 35 games on there...

Though avatars and themes are yours forever and some of those are like 4 a pop (themes).

I think Sony is handling it as good as any other big company would, but it is pretty much bullshit they never even hinted at anything for a full week. I realize they cannot just say watch your credit cards because people would have freaked out (and they did), but there was no news for a long time.

And if the thing we receive is three months of Plus, then that would just look like a dirty scheme and would probably hurt them more than anything (what would PS+ subscribers get, an extension?). Just give us a choice of a cheap PSN release (maybe a PlayStation Classic), even something like Crazy Birds on minis would be acceptable I think. Sony does not really owe the public anything, but if it is a few months of PS+ I will be really annoyed.

I do not think this outage is going to effect them much. In two years no one will care, just like the Red Ring of Death. Only fanboys will bring it up, and they are like .00004% of the market anyways.

Also,

That image was from reddit and I complained about it because they misinform their public. I think the company should be blamed for what they did wrong and posting credit card information in .xml was not one of them. It was encrypted. Now user data wasn't and they fucked up big time.

Sunday, Kaz is going to have a press conference regarding the whole thing. We shall see what he says.

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/30/hirai ... 1-a-m-edt/ (http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/30/hirai-to-address-psn-security-breach-at-1-a-m-edt/)

I don't think free Playstation Plus is a bad deal. I have gotten 1 month of Xbox Live Gold each time I got a Red Ring of Death, for my troubles.

What I want happen:

1. Kaz walks in says he is sorry for what happen.
2. Tells users that we all get a choice of AAA PS3 games to pick from for our troubles.
3. Tells us they have Chuck Norris and Segata Shanshiro working the case.
4. They both walk on stage, bringing in the hacker half alive, riddled with punch marks over his face.
5. Say that PSN will be up .... RIGHT NOW!

What will happen:

1. Kaz will show charts and talk about how great the PSN brand is.
2. Talk about how sorry this happen.
3. Talk about how they have security experts on it and how they will protect user data in the future.
4. Give users a crappy PSN title like Undertow for their troubles.
5. Give a broad estimate for when PSN will be up.
6. Do something embarrassing that will stay on the internet for a long time. (RIIIIIDGE RACERRRRR)

Rumor has it that Sony will give out a choice... either 3 Months of PS+, a free PSN game or a free movie. I think its the best choice. I will take the 3 months of PS+ as I actually like the service.

Yeah. A free (limited time) game, cheap deals on current games, bonus features such as auto update and cross game chat, and more.

Post by: George on April 30, 2011, 09:02:55 pm
If you think there is going to be new features..... Sorry. No.

They are busy rebuilding the security for the network and won't even have PSN all the way up at first. I think that signing in, playing online will work.. then the store will come on last.

I doubt they are going to focus on adding auto updating... and Cross game chat that won't come due to Microsoft holding a patent on it.

Online gameplay up this week.

It will probably just be something like DLC for a game most people already own, like Uncharted 2.

I am annoyed with how they still have no set date for when it is coming back. Is it really so hard to just say something like "Friday for North America"? Even if it is a late estimate, then people would be more excited when it comes up "Early".

In other news, while unrelated to the PSN outage, Sony Online Entertainment was hacked and this time, for sure, all their members' credit card numbers were taken. Neat huh?

I originally said Sony was going to come away fine from this, but now I genuinely think they will have a hard time getting people to trust them again for at least two years, even if I think their upcoming new PSN hardware is going to be stronger than most others in the industry.

Really? They are going to get caught. According to Sony they didn't detect the threat of someone hacking because Anonymous was DDOSing them. I assume its someone from ANON that used the attack to steal info.

New updates today:

- Sony is going to offer 1 million dollar, for one year free identity theft protection (US only) (http://http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/05/05/sony-offering-free-allclear-id-plus-identity-theft-protection-in-the-united-states-through-debix-inc/)

- Sony says they are testing the new PSN server around the clock before the online gameplay/home or whatever launch (http://http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/05/05/important-step-for-service-restoration/)

- A Letter from Howard Stringer (http://http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/05/05/a-letter-from-howard-stringer/)

"Sony also said it would delay the restart of its PlayStation Network despite having said last Sunday that it would begin restoring services within the week. A spokeswoman said on Saturday this would not be possible, and that no date had been fixed for the restart. "

This is way out of hand. Hiding vital information from us is one thing, but constantly breaking promises does not give me much hope.

I wonder what will happen if it is still down by E3? Would be hilarious and depressing. The jokes made by Nintendo and Microsoft had better be legendary!

I cannot wait for the first Kevin Butler commercial after this. All of their other slogans are horrifically blowing up in their face at the moment.

This just sucks. I have Virtua Tennis 4 already lined up, want to hits some balls with Aki. : <

Sony, give me Tomba 1, 2 and Omega Boost for free on PlayStation Classics and I will call it even.

Online play is back up for most people, the store comes later - The only feature I actually want.

Everyone join PlayStation Home in the Hudson Theater tonight and we will all set up our bubble machines at the same time while salsa dancing. It will be glorious.

Down for the day. PlayStation Store is expected to come back by the end of the month.

I like how Sony gets a different part of their company hacked every day now, though the latest ones are seemingly unrelated and are small time compared to the first batch. They are going to have an incredibly hard uphill battle with trying to get people to trust them for years to come.

Also, the reward program is kind of funny as the biggest supporters get nothing and people like me get such a great choice of stuff. What is everyone going to choose?

I want WipEout HD and inFamous, but a friend promised to give me the latter if I get Little Big Planet and beat it with him in co-op instead. It will not come with the DLC, so that is annoying too.

To be honest nothing in the Free Games list really appeals to me(outside of LittleBigPlanet which I already own) so I don't know if I'll be getting any of them. Still, it's a generous act on Sony's part and I'm sure it'll make many people happy.

So basically next week.

Also: The titles they are given out are all highly rated. I suggest Dead Nation for sure. If you hate it, so what, it was free.

Ratings and professional reviews mean little to me, but thank you all the same for the recommendation George. I'll look into it. ;)

Try to do it at a time when there isn't a buttload of traffic on the Store. I was on there this afternoon and it was glitching like crazy. I think I actually lost one of my free games because now it says I have to get a "Game #2" when I didn't even download my first one yet. =

When you first enter the PlayStation Store one of the tabs on the side says "Welcome Back." Select that and then select which of the free games you want. You get two PS3 and two PSP. I just hope you don't lose a free PS3 game like I did.

If it marks that you already selected the first game and you didn't and the option for the first game disappeared: Go all the way back to your XMB> Network Tab> Account Information> Transaction Management> Service List>SCEA promotions

Should say "FREE GAME 1" or something like that. Click it and it will say 'add game' and then you just pick it.

I got WipEout HD and Little Big Planet. Wanted to get inFamous instead of LBP, but a friend offered to give me his copy of that sometime soon.

WipEout HD is the first time I ever liked the series, and it is way easier than I expected - Which is a good thing. I absolutely love the style, but some of the songs are just annoying. The menus are classy as Hell.

I never liked Little Big Planet because the controls totally fucking suck and I hate the art, music and game direction, and Media Molecule have a crazy ego, but it really is crazy what people have made online and it is just fun to look at what people have done. Sometimes even the worst levels are enjoyable just because they are so bad.

Also, Assassin's Creed II with most of the DLC is available on PSN for $10... I had to finally get into the series at that price. So far, the game is pretty damn cool!

Great job, Jeremy.

@Sanus:
Try using the custom soundrack feature in Wipeout. I'd usually listen to some AC/DC whenever I played it.
