Long time no see!

Gil Vicente won.

Arsenal lost.

Sporting are a joke.

Nothing to see here.

OMFG Braga is being so robbed right now.

I never EVER had seen a player get two consecutive yellow cards in 3 seconds for a penalty that doesn't exist without him even complaining!

This is madness! Benfica's controlling all of this. The bastards.

My Sporting Lisbon is causing me so much pain.

After getting literally raped by FC Porto last week, we might as well kiss the Millenium Cup goodbye tomorrow.

In other news, you guys all saw the Euro 2012 draw didn't ya (http://http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=736035&sec=europe&cc=5739)?

Portugal's is on easy street yet again, but we always get worked up by tall scandinavians, damn them!

England seems to be on easy street too.

Germany's gonna get their hands full with Turkey.

And I hope France doesn't qualify, I can't stand those croissant-munching, fine wine-tasting, snooty and overly polite frenchmen.

I am sadden that Arsenal's dreaful run of Aston Villa > Manchester United > Chelsea has yeilded just one point, damn man, that's what we get when we play with no strikers. Literally, we are using a guy who is a winger and 5 ft 5 as our main striker!

Oh Robin, how I miss you, fucking Holland.

We would all like France a whole lot more if Raymond was just not their manager.

So Arsenal kicked Liverpool's butt.

And right now, I'm being told FC Porto just scored against Academica.

At least FC Porto now takes the Carlsberg Cup seriously...

Did Arsenal end up winning? I just heard of the 1 - 0.

Well, kind of seriously. It's still the second lines playing.
Mariano's goal was freakishly wonderful however. That's two great goals in a week's time!

Yay at Diaby scoring headers at the right end and Fabregas handball at the end stops a Gerrard freekick, good stuff.

So after both Chelsea and Manchester United absolutely destroying Arsenal in the last two games (Not going to beat around the bush, well not so much Chelsea, but Manchester United ripped us apart like a knife through butter) we are now 6 points behind Chelsea and 5 points behind Manchester United thanks to both of them dropping points.

Football is a funny old game.

Great game by Campbell by Arsenal and Hulk and Varela on Porto.

Porto smashed 5-1 into Braga.

Incidentally, this led to Benfica taking 1st place, which sucks.

Porto is now 3rd, 5pts from Braga and 6 from Benfica.
Benfica still has to play against Braga and Porto, so anything is possible.

Some good news for Sporting fans as they can rejoice defeating Everton, well at least they are winning 3-0 now. Everton were recently in fine form, holding Arsenal to a draw and victories against Manchester United and Chelsea (3-1 and 2-1 respectively)

Liverpool also go through, wouldn't be surprised them winning it if they manage to get Torres fit again.

Aaron Ramsey has just had his foot broken for Arsenal and a terrible injury that could be the end of his career (Fearing for the worse here...) literally similar to Eduardo's injury two years ago.

I really do not understand why refs allow this, we've had three major injuries to key players in the last five years. Prayers go out to Ramsey and hope he can walk properly again, let alone play football.

I am still estatic by the win, especially the third goal by Nasri, if you haven't seen it, do so. A few of the Sky Sports pundits here were trying to downplay it and put it down as terrible defending, but if Rooney scored it I wouldn't have heard the end of it!

Nasri's goal shows why he deserves to be in the quarterfinals ahead of Ronaldo

Another hard fought victory today for Arsenal but it could have all been a different story, Arshavin missed chance after chance after he scored his goal, than Mr-Bad-At-Scoring-Goals manages to score one in the 93rd minute to give Arsenal a 2-1 victory. Not bad for Bendtner considering everyone was slagging him off last week.

Glad to see we might be getting Fabregas, Song and Rosicky back for the next game, if that doesn't show you Arsenal's strength in depth, nothing will!

That'll do Jose, that'll do.

Wesley does such good passes, Real Madrid were fools (Not the first time they've done that) for letting him go.

Be interesting how Inter Milan would cope with the other teams, after two failed attempts, Mourinho seems to have finally gotten the team playing in Europe how they should be, that and in Wesley, they have a player who can find the precise passes that are needed for a team that sit back and soak up pressure and finally attacking in that one move that'll bring a goal.

Eto'o though, goal aside, was pretty poor on the night!

Also special mention goes out to Drogba, three seasons in a row he can't end the final match Chelsea have in the Champions League without some sort of trouble around him, HAHAHAHAHAHA~

There is nothing worse than winning the game until the 92nd minute when one really lucky goal is conceeded and you end up drawing the game whilst at the same time hearing Chelsea smash one of the strongest teams in England 7-1.

Oh wait, it's all that and hearing Manchester United smashed another team 4-0.

Not by a long shot. Arsenal went in there like pussies.
I mean, you guys gave 5-0 to Porto, with Porto players actually discussing the game. And then you guys let Barça come in and make 10 (count 'em) freaking goal attempts at the 15 minute mark?

Arsenal was lucky.

And why the fuck didn't Walcott starred in the starting line-up? He totally made the difference.

And btw, that penalty was a joke.

Arsenal managed to stay put and turn the game to a draw (and has merit for that), but that doesn't mean the score at the end was deserved.

Not by a long shot. Arsenal went in there like pussies.
I mean, you guys gave 5-0 to Porto, with Porto players actually discussing the game. And then you guys let Barça come in and make 10 (count 'em) freaking goal attempts at the 15 minute mark?

The problem is you are talking about the perfect footballing side, they have done what they did to us to Manchester United in the final, Chelsea in the semis, Inter in the group stages, Real Madrid for the last two years running, all who have come have just denied the inevitable Barcelona victory. We are basically talking about the best football side for the last 20 years here, being able to hold them off to a draw is no small feet. Going in like pussies? Pffffft you have basically called the best clubs in world football a bunch of pussies.

Which against Barcelona, is pretty much the case, the teams that have the best chance against them are the ones who play extremely rough and negative football (Shown by exactly which teams have managed to beat them) which are things Arsenal are not or will ever be under Wenger.

Quote from: "crackdude"
Arsenal was lucky.

Yes and no, how quiet did Vermaelen keep Messi? How brilliant was Song before he had to become centre back, and even then still made some vital stops, how good was Clichy? In the end, Barcelona could not continue their intense game of football and make us pay, the game is about 90 minutes, not 60 minutes. Then when you consider we had three players all carrying knocks (Two of which broke down in the first 30 minutes) certainly, we were not lucky there.

Yes we were lucky in the sense Almunia made some great saves (Cancelled out by two horrible goalkeeping errors) and we were not down 4-0 by half time (This particularly can be said of all teams against Pep's side) but the fact was we started to turn on them as soon as they scored the second goal is a general indication that the team has quality in them.

Quote from: "crackdude"
And why the fuck didn't Walcott starred in the starting line-up? He totally made the difference.

Because Walcott cannot hold onto the ball and has not got the skill to use his pace wisely, only when do teams tire can he start to play good. He has never been good in games he starts, but very good when he is a sub.

Quote from: "crackdude"
And btw, that penalty was a joke.

How? He got in the way of Fabregas' shot which probably would have resulted in a goal anyway knowing how shit Valdes is, therefore, he blocked a goal scoring attempt.

Quote from: "crackdude"
Arsenal managed to stay put and turn the game to a draw (and has merit for that), but that doesn't mean the score at the end was deserved.

I didn't even said we deserved to draw...

I said that this team has potential to be something great, Gallas out, van Persie out, Arshavin out, Song out of position, Fabregas was already half broken, our team was literally falling apart yet they managed to hold Barcelona to a draw. Not many teams can do that, not after going 2-0 down. Not saying we are better than Barca and that we'll beat them at the Nou Camp (Will probably end 4-1) but we taught them a lesson, a lesson that has been taught to us many times before, football is a game of 90 minutes, not 60.

Aki, I was expressing my views on the game and not bashing you or anything mind you ;)

I'd love to see Arsenal win the Champions, truly.

Being able to hold them off to a draw is quite an accomplishment, as you said even with players breaking down in the first half and a 2-goal disadvantage.
In football luck alone isn't worth a cent, and Arsenal really worked a lot for the game.
Still, the first 60minutes were so intensively Barça-dominated that a draw doesn't reflect the game. It reflects the last 30 minutes or so.

But that's football, and why we love it right?

I'm split for the second game though. I'd like to see Arsenal in the final, but Barcelona winning the Champions in the Santiago Barnabeu would be priceless..

Oh I know, but I think credit should be given to this Arsenal side, even if it's little, because as I see it, this Barcelona side is pretty much almost perfect, the only thing missing is Ibrahimovic form and a better goalkeeper (Valdes is seriously one of the worst GK playing for a championship winning side I've ever seen)

Realistically, Barcelona has every chance of remaining European champions, I've seen them close to 20 times (Maybe 25) this season, making them the second most watched team after Arsenal for me and everytime I see them, I see probably only a few stray passes, only after they've won the game. Although I watch it rather because I like their manager and the way his changed the side completely, I think he'll go down as probably the greatest club manager of all time eventually.

Barca will probably rightly deserve whatever trophy they have coming their way.

Only sad thing was Lyon beat Real Madrid so we can't see Real be violated in so many ways in the final at their own home ground =[

Barca is Pep, everyone else is, even Messi, is a byproduct of him.

I didn't see us stopping Barca and I knew when Silvestre (Guess who handed the ball back to Messi?) started, our chances were slim, but we did pose some problem but alas, the work ethic with Pep's side is something else. They close us down like a team never before, although I knew this coming into the game. Truly a remarkable side (Remembers me of the invincibles in oh so many ways)

Good luck to him retaining the trophy, two great young managers going to be going at it next with completely opposite footballing styles, may the best Pep win

So Arsenal is just three points away from Chelsea, both them and ManU have to screw up at least one game for Arsene to take advantage.

At this rate, Manchester City might go to the Champions League.

It's going to be interesting from here on end.

Coincidentally, has Benfica lost it's streak?

It's gonna be tough, they fight my Sporting this Sunday, hopefully my team will give a birthday present to remember!

And in they face FC Porto in May, it's going to S-U-C-K for the eagles.

I am in rage mode. I can barely speak. I screamed so much at today's match. The ref wasn't that bad but he was such a nitpick with stupid little shit like wrong throw-ins and no cards for the, that I counted, three hand balls the other team did.

But, at the 74th minute, we managed to score. 1-1 against the leader! Best of all, two homegrown players did the job, the one who scored playing for the main team for the very first time.

Video: http://videos.sapo.pt/Yos98Y41eWzOdZ4oqzJ1 (http://videos.sapo.pt/Yos98Y41eWzOdZ4oqzJ1)

I continued to scream, I was so angry. All of a sudden the other team didn't want to lose time to fake injuries anymore. And then, as Mourinho would say, we parked the bus and stayed that way until the final whistle.

I'm getting old for this stuff. I'm filing for divorce.

And more than anyone to Arsene.

I find this thread's new name quite appropriate. Two games to go and we still haven't avoided relegation in yet another disastrous year.

As you can see by this chart, everything went down the hill by fixture 10.

Yesterday we were losing 2-0. We managed to draw but in the end we lost 3-2. That draw would've secured us another year in the second division if my math was correct. It'd have been important, since we are playing two of the top teams in the league (one of them still fighting for promotion) in the last two matches. It's going to be hard but there are teams in a tougher position. We shall see.

To think the president was day dreaming about promotion at the beginning of the season and now we're down to this. I hope the good old new manager sets things straight for next season.

I am making a promise now. If we are promoted next year, I am buying FIFA on day one. If we are champions I am buying FIFA on two different platforms. Buying this sort of game (cashcow, updated each year, ...) goes against my beliefs, but in all honesty I can't recall the last time I saw my team in a video game.

I'd better start putting some money aside. :afroman:

On one hand, Fabregas knows even Barca cant win everything, on the other hand, Barca will now want Fabregas more than ever.

I think I prefer the former.

You did good Jose.

[spoiler:1yi9fiqs]Inter to win final 2-1.[/spoiler:1yi9fiqs]

Also check my quote for Arsenal's second leg scoreline, you'll see I quite rightly said we would lose 4-1.

Referee nominations are a fucking joke as usual.
The only one worst than this motherfucker is João Ferreira that somehow was involved in all the dubious Porto suspensions, some of the most marking Benfica games in the championship and last year's Taça da Liga final.

I don't get it. seriously.

It looks like we avoided relegation last week. This week we drew the third or fourth, killing their chances of promotion. Sucks to be them.

In other news, Porto beat Benfica. As you'd expect, even Porto's manager criticized the referee, saying that after a job like today's he'd be out of the World Cup after the first game.

With Porto's win, Braga are closer to Benfica. They secured the 2nd place which means they'll be playing the qualifying round of the Champions League. I can listen the fucking car horns two kilometers from the city's downtown. Stop celebrating, it annoys me. If Benfica lose and they win next week, Braga could be champions.

Unlucky? With the pressure they put on themselves, celebrating the championship for like a month now, and a super-motivated Rio Ave (you know, with the support of everyone that isn't a Benfica fan and all), if Benfica doesn't score in the first 20 minutes it will be a really cool game.

And so Beira-Mar has done it.

And welcome Portimonense who has been out of the 1st First League in over a decade.
Now it's time to play with the big boys.

Right now Arsenal is playing against Fulham and Totenham scored against Burnley.

Update and Chelsea too, so unless they tie and/or lose, ManU's not going to win it.

Update 2: The one incident that you must be referring to is the "very light" incident. It was a match between Benfica and Sporting in which a Sporting got mortally hit by a flare coming from the Benfica fan's side. The Sporting supporters started to chant "Murderers" through the rest of the match.

Reminds me of 2005. I was at Dragão Stadium in the last match of the season, Porto - Académica. Benfica had to point against Boavista (kinda like today) to win the championship. Benfica scores (a very "arguable" penalty btw if I remember right), the whole stadium shuts up, and this fool that was listening to it on the radio starts celebrating in the middle of the Central crowd!! Needless to say that not even the cops could grab him out of there! He was beaten to a pulp! All bloody and purple he was dragged on the floor by the stewarts as he couldn't get up decently LOL
What an ass.

It was all in good fun though, he didn't die.. Just got really punched in the face a lot LOL I think he broke his nose or something.

Heh, Porto fans... A good years ago we were playing Porto. A ball got sent to the stand where Porto's ultras were. Naturally, they didn't return the ball. That's when me and a number of old school (by old school I mean old enough to be our fathers) fans see some Porto ultra running away with the ball. Our fans stood up and a few walked towards the chap. Hell broke loose. I saw chairs and belts flying in the direction of that Porto fan and a few others who quickly came in aid. One or two of them replied with mallets from their drums. I saw one of our fans literally roll down the stand as I had a little kid hide behind me in fear. A few bloody Porto fans later the police came and everything settled down.

In short: you don't fuck with Gil Vicente fans.

So, guys, what did you think of Queiroz's selection of players?

To me it was kinda weird, some players I hadn't heard about. Including one of the goal-keepers.

The absence of João Moutinho is an interesting choice. No Boa Morte.

There's Nani, CR, Danny, Simão Sabrosa, Pepe, Ricardo Carvalho e Liedson.

I'm surprised Paulo Ferreira made the cut too. Some Porto fans hate him.

And is it just me or do we have too much mid-fielders?

Benfica fans are displeased because only one player made it to the national team. Imagine the uproar if this was happening to Porto again. I was expecting a much worse reaction to be honest, I suppose no one really cares.

I assume I've never even heard of some names on that list. I hear some others never even played during the qualifiers. The manager is either planning something great or he just wants to be sacked as soon as possible.

You cannot possibly compare.

Baia was considered by UEFA to be the best european goalkeeper in 2004.
Still, he did not go to Euro 2004 nor World Cup 2006. It makes no sense that one of the best european goalkeepers and best portuguese goalkeeper in recent history doesn't get to play for his country in the prime of his career.
In fact, Ricardo, who played for Portugal at the time, is now the THIRD goalkeeper in Betis, that was relegated to second spanish division recently. Not to mention how he constantly misjudged plays, how arrogant he was and that Portugal lost in 2004's final cause of his bad positioning, and lost 3-2 against Germany in 2008 thanks to two errors of him.
He was great with penalties though. But so was Baia.

Quim is a great goalkeeper, but he is far from his prime time. Also, Eduardo is excellent as well. So it's not as shocking as it was Baia's case.
Still, I think the perfect choice would be:
1-Eduardo
2-Beto
3-Quim

I don't know the other guy.

EDIT:
To solidify my point, here are Ricardo's achievements:

Midfielder Diarra, who left the team on Saturday after missing training for three days because of persistent stomach pains, has been ruled out of the June 11-July 11 finals in South Africa.

The 25-year-old, who has won 27 caps for France, suffers from a genetic blood disorder affecting red blood cells and causing chronic fatigue, his Real Madrid club said in a statement.
That's some real serious disease. There are comments on him abandoning career.

Quote
Diarra is "now resting at home following medical advice due to asthenic syndrome secondary to a sickle-cell anemia that will be subjected to a hematological study in Lyon Hospital."

Sickle-cell anemia is a genetic blood disorder where red blood cells form an abnormal and rigid, sickle shape.

Well, the game against Cameroon was adequate. The team did get better after that uninspired game against Cape Verde.

But Ronaldo is starting to worry me. It feels like everytime he plays for his country he seems unfocused, nervous and inconsistent. Don't let the pressure get to you, man.

Say what you will about Nani's smug attitude but he does seem to get results.

But Danny seriously, what was he on last night? He seemed like he didn't understand the simple concept of just shooting to score.

Even when Cristiano pretty much gave him what could've been the 4th goal on a silver platter.

Portugal will fall in the round of 16, against the champions, as will the USA, against ze Germans (after penalties). The same with Australia, but they will lose to England, who will finish third.

It's safe to assume everybody wins on Sega Bits. Except the English.

France lost another friendly match yesterday... I don't think they'll reach the 16-finals.

There'll be some good games before the WC begins:

04/06
Slovenia x New Zeland

05/06
Switzerland x Italy
South Africa x Denmark
USA x Australia

06/06
Nigeria x North Korea

07/06
Brazil x Tanzania

08/06
Spain x Polska

11/06
Begins the World Cup :)

Tomorrow is the big day...

Some games are going to happen at the same time as some conferences from E3. Which one will you prefer to watch?

Btw, How's going to be your 'job schedules' during the world cup? Are your bosses going to allow TVs in your department? Is the company you work for going to be closed during your country's game?

If you asked me, if it wasn't for a truly excellent display from the goalkeeper, the game should have ended 5-0 to Argentina. Defence is still terrible but I think the majority of teams in this world cup would have some shoddy defences.

So far though, the best game at the world cup.

Now for England vs USA, I have plenty of ampathy when it comes to international, but for now come on England, yes even you Ledley King you fucking shitty Tottenham player and Rooney you Shrek wannabe. I hope Obama tunes in tonight, England will show who's ass is going to get kicked about.

Yet, Argentina had a dreadful second-half. I don't think they'll make it far if they keep this instability and I usually love Argentina (except Di Maria, the guy's not worth half of what Benfica is asking for).

It would be funny to see the States win it tonight though lol

I'd like to also mention, the wannabe wingers that were taken instead of Walcott all did the same problems Walcott does except none has his unrivalled pace. Fabio's worst decision.

Also Arsene was right, when Wilshire, Bartley, Jay E Thomas and Gibbs become first team regulars, England will probably have a realistic chance.

I don't really mind the horns, besides, let them Africans enjoy their world cup, it might be a while before they get a chance to host another one. If that's how they support their team, than let them support their team like that.

Also Evra blaming France drawing on the horns is pretty hilarious.

Also, I realized I've actually made no world cup predictions, well here goes.

Best attack falls to both Spain and Argentina. Spain having the likes of Torres, Villa and Xavi, as well as subs that include the ever impressive Fabregas and Alonso who can thread any pass, it just goes to prove their strength in depth. Argentina has not only the best player in the world but also Higuain, Tevez and Aguero, certainly it matches Spain with ease.

Best defence goes to Spain, mostly because just how impressive their goalkeeper is, and then when you look at number two and three, madness. Plus some impressive defenders in the form of Pique. I would say Brazil hold some good defenders, Lucio in particular was extremely impressive and I'd wager without him, Inter would not have won the Champions League.

Best manager goes to none other than Mr Capello, been there, done that, multiple times, he is England's greatest saving grace. And he's not even English!

Best player at the tournament I would say is BENDTNER!!1!!1 actually no, still Mr Messi, he should have notched three goals for Argentina already and seems to have in recent games, found his club form carried into International.

I don't think anyone can argue Holland doesn't have the most technical team at the World Cup, just check out van Persie's goal against Charlton, I said Holy Shit when I saw it. Add to that Sneijder, Robben and van dar Vart, truly a skillful team.

And my dark horses in the tournament are the Germans, many of who made it into the Champions League final and making it into the Euro finals last time around and I fancy Italy to still have a good drive to them and they still hold some good players.

Also appearently New York Posts headline was "USA wins 1-1"

And van Persie vs Bendtner kicked off! GOOOOOOOO PERSIE!

In this country, BBC and ITV (Channel 3) are automatically given the rights to show the World Cup and Euro tournaments, so I can watch it on free TV or free streams on BBC iPlayer and the ITV one too.

::smugface::

But no, doesn't Portugal show the games for free?
Title: Re: Official Australia is rubbish at Füteßäll and Vuvuzela thred

Most of the major sports broadcasting rights in Portugal belong solely to the Olivera Bros company(hard to beleive that they started out as a clerks on their mother's inn so many years ago), which is a major media mogule.

So what they say, goes.

Their prized possession is the pay-per-view SportTV channels, much like Sky Sports 1.

There were a few places that streamed some games for free(like Sapo Vídeos), legitimately but they were eventually shut down(the streams, not the actual websites).

It's probably one of the most intense sports you could take part in and Japan doesn't even have the best defence at the World Cup. Also, semi-related video of some random team winning the league at their rivals homeground wearing SEGA.

Not at all. You know how critical our media is. They pressured in the last 2 minutes.
Portugal had a ball in their post, a 30 meter shot by Cristiano Ronaldo.
The referee was full of shit, as it had been 4 years ago against France.

Best portuguese players: Fabio Coentrao, Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Alves, Raul Meireles

Worst portuguese players: DANNY, Deco (he was playing in a less deep position because of Danny's sheer stupidity), Liedson

Portugal should have won. But they had a very organized defense and we had trouble achieving penetration.

Portugal was dissapointing. It was clear that Ivory Coast was better at least physically, there were good runners and through most of the 1st half they had 11 players on defense making passing the ball a nightmare for Portugal.

You had a choice to pass to Coentrao and Paulo Ferreira, but after that it would be pointless.

The ref was also a huge jerk. What a weird foul he say and the other one held his head when Liedson just touched his arm, such theatrics.

Queiroz prefers to have ball possession than having players actually take chances.

Suprisingly Ivory Coast in the 2nd half started to lose steam and were starting to allow Portugal to actually move around more, but Portugal was never a threat.

You could tell the Ivory Coast was in much better shape.

Nah, although they have a really high ranking for some odd reason currently.

Brazil ought to provide you some entertainment tonight and if you want to see some good football action, Spain is always a good bet. The Dutch usually are too, but so far have failed to impress.

Keep in mind though, they are using a new ball at this world cup (The roundest ball EVAH!111!!1) and that most teams only had it four weeks prior to train with it, except ze Germans, they've been using it in their league for the last year or so and funny enough, so far they've got the highest winning margin (4-0 against Australia, those Germans do like crushing the dreams of English speaking humans =[ )

Problem is it wasn't. Bruno Alves and the other dude were struggling for territory, but nothing serious. The ball just went over them. It was a normal dispute, nothing worth of stopping the play, let alone when it was a goal! The referee whistled before Ronaldo touched it in, but it would have been a goal. He was next to the post, the ball went over the keeper and he just directed it in. I think it wasn't offside either.

EDIT:
Danny isn't portuguese either! The worst portuguese players AREN'T PORTUGUESE! wtf deport them! swiftly!

EDIT2:
And I agree with max_cady, though we were a threat, cause we actually scored.

Cameroon is the first team to be eliminated from the world cup. Every other team has, so far, arithmetic chances to go to the next 'round'.

I believe Italy won't lose to New Zeland tomorrow. but if they manage to draw, then Italy will in the same situation as 'big' teams like France; Germany and England.

Next week's games are going to be very 'dramatic'.

I think Portugal will win. Though North Korea players are very dedicated, dedication alone only takes them so far. They aren't well organized. Portugal will explore that well.
Then another tie with Brasil and everything would be alright.

What are you talking about? Portugal was very organized against Cote. In fact that's why there weren't much shots at goal from anyone! Both teams were so well organized the tactics nulled each other.

What's wrong with Portugal is the non-portuguese players. THey don't give two shits about our country what are they doing there.

I don't know, Queiroz to me, doesn't seem to have the same authority Scolari had, no matter how mad he was at Baía, some of his choices for the World Cup seem a bit far fetched and his tactics he used against the Ivory Coast(but then agai it's not like Ivory Coast was playing all that great either) were not working.

The portuguese players were clearly intimidated and afraid to make a mistake, afraid to lose the ball and having to defend(which doesn't make sense, as Portugal has a great defense), more worried about ball possession.

North Korea is not impossible to beat, but we should be careful. As We already have a history with Korean teams.

But I think Brazil should be extra careful with Ivory Coast tonight.

Isn't it right as well that if both Portugal and Brasil win this round, a tie between both is enough for both to pass? Only this way, Portugal places 2nd (which might be great, since Spain will likely be 2nd place in their group)

Appearently John Terry is trying to cause a player revolt against Capello and shift the blame of all of England's problems and complete lack of ability on the manager, a manager who has won 9 out of 16 times in the domestic seasons he has managed.

And the brain dead written press agree with him, honestly, I hope England face Argentina again and Messi does and handball that gets them knocked out of the World Cup, ungrateful bunch of overpaid and vastly overrated celebs, should show more respect to the man.

Greece was a 'letdown'. I knew they wouldn't beat Argentina, but I thought they were going to play better, after all, it was their last chance of advancing.

The 'Nigeria x South Korea' match was very dramatic. At the end of the game, Nigerians were desperate to score their third goal, and south kroeans were desperate tryng to block the nigerians.

16-finals games so faR:

Uruguay x South Korea
Argentina x Mexico

They are experimenting with six referees instead of four. Also, the sale of alcoholic drinks inside the stadium was allowed not until that long ago. The players have many original haircuts. They wanted to introduce a microchip inside the ball but after testing it they figured it was a bad idea.

Soccer is just as legitimate as Football.

Quote
Soccer's etymology is not American but British. It comes from an abbreviation for Association Football, the official name of the sport (for those of you who have never heard the team "Association Football" before, it was named after the Football Association, which still governs English soccer, to differentiate itself from the other major type of football, Rugby Football, which was named after the Rugby School. FIFA, the world governing body of soccer, is French for the International Federation of Association Football… F-I-F-A). For obvious reasons, in the 1880s and 1890s, English newspapers couldn't use the first three letters of Association as an abbreviation in their pages, so they took the next syllable, S-O-C. With the British penchant for adding "-er" at the end of words: punter, footballer, copper, and, of course, nicknaming rugby, "rugger," the word "soccer" was soon born, over a hundred years ago, here in England, the home of soccer.

Glad to see Slovakia played attacking football by the end of it instead of wasting time, which is fine in the last 3 minutes of injury time, not 40 minutes before the game is over. Provided great entertainment they did.

And Squirtle was good as usual (Yes I know how to spell his name correctly, but being named after a Pokemon is so much out there man)

It was an incredible match, indeed.
Slovakia's third goal was really 'admirable'.

Afterwards Italy's first goal, there was an italian player who did fake/sham a punch into his face. Just like what happened to Kaka last week. Slovakia's goal keeper got a yelow card for that.
if I were the ref. I would show a red card to the italian player who did pretend he got punched into his face.

It's sad to see so many 'actors' in this World Cup.
That's the scene I'm talking about:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXVVlwFcAfU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXVVlwFcAfU)

---

In the other game: Paraguay x New Zeland, well, if NZ had scored at least one goal, they'd advance. But their team is so much deffensive that they did not even shot once into the goal's direction. Not ONCE!

----

I'm expecting a big game between 'Denmark x Japan'. I'd bet my money on the danish team, but anything can happen hehe

Very very poor referee. A match where a tie would serve both teams.. The game was balanced, Brasil wasn't playing shit and Portugal didn't want to push the envelope too much.

Danny once again was the worst Portuguese player on the field. He contributed nothing and fucked up when alone in front of the goalkeeper. Very bad player, I don't know what he is doing there.

I thought the referee should have showed some yellow cards to those 'lazy' Ghana players.
Just after a Ghana player was carried out of the field (on the stretcher), he stood up like nothing had ever happened to him before.
If I were the ref. I wouldn't allow him to come back to the game for the next 3min or so.

Americans are blaming the coach 'Bob Bradley' for making wrong choices: Fiddley; Clark and Altiodores are some of the names the coach should allow to play.

Source: http://www.firebobbradleynow.com/ (http://www.firebobbradleynow.com/)

I also think 'Altidore', 'Fiddley' and 'Clark' suck.
Howard, Donovan, Dempsey and Bradley-son were the best american players in this WC.

Also, I think Onyewu should have been listed to play against Ghana.

It's not karma, it's incorrect decisions, stupid decisions that must be corrected from the game. I could not give a damn about the England team, but this is borderlining on stupidty by being the only sport that doesn't use cameras to determine outcomes, but FIFA likes to have as much money as possible or some illogical statement they can shout out.

You forget that right after the non-goal Germany almost scores.
Now imagine that it is allowed for the decisions to be contested by the coach. Now with that in mind, Germany scores right away. What will they do, count one for England and not Germany? Isn't the German goal as legal since the play wasn't cut?

Or if they allowed the coaches to cut the plays in order to protest, some would use that to cut off dangerous counter-attacks.

Resorting to technology would involve stopping the game. That's bullshit.

No, you do not, because England scored a perfectly valid goal. Under the correct manner of things, play would have started back in the centre circle.

So why are you always complaining about refs? Stop complaining about them, don't call all or any of them shit if you are unwillingly to change the game to help them out.

You think it's bullshit, but what's bullshit is dodgy decisions again and again being played in the biggest matches. That is the ultimate bullshit, games have to sometimes be decided by completely incorrect and wrong decisions.

Football will not all of a sudden breakdown completely and be ruined forever, that's insane to think that, it doesn't ruin the flow of the game if applied correctly, it only makes it fair. What is wrong with making the game as fair as possible?
Title: Re: Official Bootter Thread of Bergkamp and Dutch Masters

So how do you apply it correctly?

You say this: "No, you do not, because England scored a perfectly valid goal. Under the correct manner of things, play would have started back in the centre circle."
This would NOT happen.
If they were to use tech after the ref made the bad call, one of two things would happen:
(1) the coach immediately calling the play and effectively stopping the game for what could or couldn't be a legal goal (at this point it is still left to determine);
(2) the coach would call the play, and it would be investigated the next time the game stops. Incidentally, that's when Germany also scores. Since the game was not stopped, both goals are legal and may the clusterfuck begin.

It will either break the game or cause even more confusion. Not the right way to go.
I'm all for chips in the balls or whatever. I'm totally against stopping the game to look at tv screens, and anyone who loves football and thinks about it for a sec will as well.

This is what is the correct set of events, England scored a valid goal, it means the Germans would be unable to score that goal because they could not attack from that position because England scored a PERFECTLY LEGAL GOAL and would start the attack from the centre circle.

And how long does it take for the ref to see an offside or a correct goal, about one second, if a commentator watching the game can call an incorrect decision at the precise moment that decision is given, why can the ref not have a fourth assistent who can confirm to him he has given the right decision watching replays of the game. Think about that. We do not need a minute to see if a correct decision is right, just a few seconds.

And why should the coach be allowed to call play? If the refs assistent says what he believes, tough for the manager and the team, no team should be allowed to in the end influence the ref. At the end of the day, it should always be left to the refs discretion. Not the manager.

Quote from: "crackdude"
It will either break the game or cause even more confusion. Not the right way to go.

And the current method is any better... How? The current method causes people to feel great injustice, attack refs, abuse them, it is not good, it's awful. You say it will break the game, don't be insane, you don't have any foundations to stand on considering every major sport HAS video replays and every sport still plays fine.

You are assuming we have to do it like cricket, we do not. You have another assistent or two just watching video replays. That takes a matter of seconds.

Are you claiming that Wenger and Ferguson, two of the most successful managers of the English game, are either incorrect about their consistent assertation about goal line technology or do not love the sport. More or less every coach and player wants the technology and a large amount of fans of clubs do too.

You think about that for a second.

I'm not claiming any of those things. Stop taking my words to extents I do not intent them to go.

"This is what is the correct set of events, England scored a valid goal, it means the Germans would be unable to score that goal because they could not attack from that position because England scored a PERFECTLY LEGAL GOAL and would start the attack from the centre circle."
Yes, if the referee thinks it's legal. HE DIDN'T. Someone as to call for the game to stop right?

And take a look at this video, and please pause it @0:24 (white screen with text) for me to develop my argument:
[youtube:1cc6ej5s]ZgGEZu9jXRs[/youtube:1cc6ej5s]

So that happened in the game (between the two biggest portuguese rivals in one of the most important games of the season at the attacking team's homeground with 60k home fans screaming for "justice") and the referee decided to play on. Tell me how on earth it only takes one second for the 4th official or whatever to decide. Odds are he/they will override the original decision based on pressure alone, as there is NO WAY you can tell just by looking. Still, if you continue the video and see the case study, the ball doesn't go in.

Now if they override a right decision for a wrong one after watching the clips, how would the fans feel?
You do realize this WILL happen, probably more often than canceling out a bad decision.

It kills the game. I'm not saying Arsene doesn't love football or that tech shouldn't be used. It's just too damned obvious that using televised replays to override decisions have no place in football in the form you are suggesting.

"every major sport HAS video replays and every sport still plays fine."
That's because no other major sport has a CONTINUOUS CLOCK. AmFootball stops the clock, hockey stops the clock, basketball stops the clock, football doesn't.
It changes everything about the flow of a football match.

Yes, the referee, after his official told him, he doesn't have to call the game off beforehand, only after he is sure of his decision. A decision as pointed out is so obvious that even a normal linesmen should have seen it, he didn't, a team got screwed over. What just pat them on the back and tell them it's football? That's not football, that's human error. It is not enjoyable and can mar over a good game.

Yes, have more than one camera fitted rather than those based purely for the TV stations. If the referee's assistent feels it didn't go over the line, then that is fine. His call to make and people will agree with him too close to make. And you are using just ONE example, not like what happened today, nor Tevez's goal, two in a day and many more over the course of a season when the wrong decisions are called more often then not.

You are talking about pressure, yes there is pressure, but a good ref will not succumb to that and the errors today was not due to pressure, it was due to human error.

Quote from: "crackdude"

Ref's fault. But if the wrong decision is overrided for the right, fans will have no compliants and that is the more likely scenerio. You are saying that a bad decision is more likely, how is it? What evidence could you possibly have when every major sport has called on the right decisions time and time again in every other sport?

Quote from: "crackdude"
It kills the game. I'm not saying Arsene doesn't love football or that tech shouldn't be used. It's just too damned obvious that using televised replays to override decisions have no place in football in the form you are suggesting.

How is it so "damned obvious" when almost every top level manager is calling for it to be instated?

If anything, the other method is way more obvious that video replays has a place in top level sport.

Quote from: "crackdude"
That's because no other major sport has a CONTINUOUS CLOCK. AmFootball stops the clock, hockey stops the clock, basketball stops the clock, football doesn't.

The clock is basically stopped when the ball goes out of play and the time is added on afterwards. It's basically the same thing, we add time after the half, they do not add any time after the half. It's virtually the same thing.

No it does not, only as much as the ref is willing to blow the whistle.

tl;dr. Any proper sport in this Earth resorts to video. Football is not one of them, because it's necessary to have volleyball cunts like Platini's France in the World Cup. I like Blatter's (and many other people) argument the video will destroy the excitement of the sport. If it's exciting in seeing your team being blatantly robbed... Well... I really don't have an argument against that.

There is no need to add extra people as there is a fourth official doing pretty much nothing during the match. The match can continue as usual, if this assistant sees anything wrong in the video he can always use the radio to contact the referee so proper judgement can be made. It takes a few seconds and doesn't interfere with the match unless absolutely necessary (ie, stop it).

It's funny how video has been used in both English and Portuguese leagues to punish players AFTER the matches. If it's used afterwards why not during?

Hopefully England's rape will push English officials to adopt video in the Premiership. If this step is taken it won't be long until every league realises they are in the 21st century.

Quote from: "crackdude"
That's because no other major sport has a CONTINUOUS CLOCK. AmFootball stops the clock, hockey stops the clock, basketball stops the clock, football doesn't.
It changes everything about the flow of a football match.

Also, injury time. Actually, stopping the clock would be beneficial for the sport. Bending the rules by wasting time has made many matches awfully bad. Fake injuries are the biggest insult the fans can get, whether the player is on your side or not.

As for goal line technology, I really don't care much about it. I know it's been tested, and it could be ideal for lower leagues where video isn't exactly an option due to cost. I think video is perfectly fine for dubious goals, ruling offsides and punish violent players and divers on the spot.

Exactly, if it's not obvious, don't call it. Ref's decision and his assistent at the end of the day, but for something so glaring obvious as what happened today...

I think that this discussion will lead nowhere based solely on suppositions alone.

I would love to see someday a football league where the clock stops, they resort to replays and every decision ever is the "right" one.
Then I'd love to see everyones' faces when they realize just how boring the 3-4 hour long of low-contact tactical football matches are.

You don't get that although it seems like simple changes it can corrupt the whole essence of the game?

And this:
"The clock is basically stopped when the ball goes out of play and the time is added on afterwards. It's basically the same thing, we add time after the half, they do not add any time after the half. It's virtually the same thing."
is ABSURD.
Tomorrow, you time one of the games. Everytime the game stops, stop the timer. If you get 90 minutes of game with the injury time, I'll happily send you 10 bucks over mail. It won't.

As for the excitement of the sport, if Maradona hadn't scored with "god's hand" against England, the sequence of events would not lead to the second goal of the match, a goal considered the most beautiful and emotional goals of all time.
Based on the laws of probability, any team will be as much robbed as it will be benefited along the years. That evens out, and yes goddamit brings excitement. It gives everyone something to talk about and discuss heartedly for months or years.

Football has been fine for over a century. Some adjustments have been made, but for long decades now no major game-changing alterations were made. Why some of you suddenly think that it needs desperate change is mind-boggling to me.

Bullshit. Boring and enraging is seeing player mock the fans with fake injuries.

Quote

More bullshit. If this was the case, we would still live in a world where substitutions aren't allowed. That clearly corrupted the game. Goal line refs clearly corrupted this year's UEFA Cup too.

Quote

A clocked match doesn't necessarily have to last 90 minutes. Check most statistics, the amount of time wasted is absurd.

Henry admitted to cheating. Nothing happened to him. Maradona also sweeps lines of coke.

Even more bullshit. Bigger teams always have had the bias, especially in less important leagues like ours. These teams are the bunch who have all the attention from the press. When they complain, it seems it's only the poor club X being robbed. Trust me, smaller teams are the most fucked over the years, if you deny this you simply don't know the reality. This is why bigger clubs are getting bigger and smaller clubs keep struggling because they are not given a fair chance inside the pitch. It's worse when the bigger teams have the money and the players AND the fucking bias.

If you think robberies bring excitement... Eh, to each his own. Perhaps if you were Irish you would get the excitement of being left out of the World Cup thanks to a hand ball. Or maybe you would like to see the exciting riots in and outside the stadiums many of them thanks to amazing refereeing jobs.

But, given you're a Porto fan, you're more than used to have the refs blowing the whistle your way. lol Perhaps you should see things outside the box.

Desperate changes? Video hasn't been around since yesterday. Robberies haven't been around since yesterday. Suddenly? I myself have been claiming this for a while. Football needs this in order to be truthful to its rules and to the skill of the teams who play it.

Because, you know, France obviously deserved their spot.

Again, based on very little evidence, almost all other major sports that use it do not last that long.

And again, it is upto the referee, most decisions a referee should trust himself, but dubious incidents require a more through examination and again, if it's too close to call, don't make the call.

Quote from: "crackdude"

As opposed to cheating out millions out of enjoyment over completely incorrect decisions. The essence of the game should not include human error on the rules side of the game. Being dijected because you were wronged in a football match by an incorrect decision is not the essence of the game.

Quote from: "crackdude"
And this:

It does not matter if its the exact time, that's not the point, but the idea is extra time is added for moments like this, doesn't matter if it's incorrect or not, it's basically the same method.

Quote from: "crackdude"
As for the excitement of the sport, if Maradona hadn't scored with "god's hand" against England, the sequence of events would not lead to the second goal of the match, a goal considered the most beautiful and emotional goals of all time.

Whatever the past is is the past, that cannot be changed. But now you are talking about possibility, how do you know that if Maradona's handball was not given, England would not have scored two fantastic goals of their own and then, Maradona goes and saves his country with a hattrick, the last goal being scored in the final minute of stoppage time and the game ends as being one of the greatest of all time. The thing about possibilities, it can go both ways, the Irish come into the world cup instead of France and go all the way to the final etc.

Anyway adding technology now will not erase that memory, it'll just make things fair for everyone. And neither will it stop beautiful goals from being scored either.

Quote from: "crackdude"
Based on the laws of probability, any team will be as much robbed as it will be benefited along the years.

This is absolutely ludicrious to point out and I just do not see how one can even possibly believe this. Take for example, Germany's win against England, obviously what you are advocating is England's legal goal now is repercussion for the goal in 1966, however factors and circumstances are vastly different. One, this is the last 16, that was the final, two, this German team would probably still go on to destroy England, already, England has benefitted much better than Germany, it has not evened out.

It's also based on very little evidence, big teams get it their way, Eduardo dived in the Champions League, Celtic got screwed over.

Quote from: "crackdude"
That evens out, and yes goddamit brings excitement. It gives everyone something to talk about and discuss heartedly for months or years.

Evans out, again, the goal yesterday is not even in an equal instence, so it has not even out.

And being robbed brings excitement? What is this? It makes people feel dijected and angry, not make us all say how grand or great our sport is. It's downright terrible. We should be discussing how excellent Germany plays, how great Ozil is, how brilliant their counterattacking football is, that's what people should be discussing, now how the linesmen got it terribly wrong.

Saying mistakes it what brings excitements is one of the worst things I have ever heard, we discuss the team, their skills, their tactics, not how wrong decisions are given.

Quote from: "crackdude"
Football has been fine for over a century. Some adjustments have been made, but for long decades now no major game-changing alterations were made. Why some of you suddenly think that it needs desperate change is mind-boggling to me.

Desperate change? Suddenly? What? I've been an advocate for this as far back as the late 90s, football needs video replay for dubious moments in the game, for it to be fairer to everyone, not just the big teams. I've seen Manchester United get so many decisions for them against the smaller teams (To an extent, Arsenal too) that were just so badly wrong the ref gave it still.

Smaller teams will keep getting screwed over and the game will not be fair. This isn't good for the game at all.

Change isn't bad, change can be good and beneficial to all.

Although Villa was in an offside position at the time he scored the goal. So it was irregular...

Well, now that the World Cup is over I have can now say this: Queiroz: F*** You!

Your tactics blow!

The mid fielders are too pushed back, making passing to the foward guys like Liedson, Hugo Almeida and Ronaldo almost impossible.

If it wasn't for Fabio Coentrao we would barely have any iniciative.

Miguel is too old and so is Deco, who has been past his prime.

The players are too scared to take risks, afraid to lose the ball.

The match against Spain was depressing, it felt like Spain was always in control, they weren't afraid to play.

So honestly, Queiroz, get lost and go back to being manager support, that's the only thing you're good at.

Get out before we make bigger asses of ourselves at the Euro Cup in Poland.

max_cady stop being a sore loser. I hate it how the manager is always the "culprit".
Games are made of decisions. His decisions were as good as anyothers. He didn't do anything wrong. Portugal even played great on the first half. The players simply couldn't react to the goal.

This was Queiroz's FIRST LOSS, and it was by one goal against the second best team in the world.

The only thing I think was lame was him betting on Danny, but that's a personal gripe of mine.

Spain was better, there's no wrong in admitting it. Stop complaining about good people's job.

I know that Spain played better.

But there was no reason for the portuguese players to feel afraid, the defense is rock solid, for the most part.
Hell, our match with Brasil was much tougher and we did OK.

And I understand that the players felt sad about the goal they suffered, but it was clear that there weren't going far against Spain.

Of course, I give credit to Queiroz for getting us this far(I myself had no expectation of getting to the eight finals), but I can't forgive for such a shaky qualification pre-World Cup.

I just don't want another "Tôliveirinha" situation like in 2002.

I just don't want another "Tôliveirinha" situation like in 2002.
Yeah dude, I understand that :)
But it was not his fault. The team simply went down after the goal. Sometimes it happens, it shouldn't.
We did qualify, and that was the main objective so I don't think it was that much of a huge deal..

Queiroz is a much better coach than Toni, and I seriously hope he continues there improving the team. Overall Portugal showed some qualities in this competition and I think it's enough to grow and make a great Euro 2 years from now. Let's just be patient.. ;)

But there was no reason for the portuguese players to feel afraid, the defense is rock solid, for the most part.

While I think the manager is very knowledgeable about football, I also think he's too much of a chicken not to play without his two defensive midfielders. The team is just too defensive. People blame Ronaldo but, truth be told, he doesn't get that many balls anyway.

This is very true. It would be nice to see a more bold team in the qualifications.

SUAREZ IS A FUCKING HERO

I don't get this. I've just read some comments in a BBC blog that really enraged me deeply.
People are actually complaining that Suarez cheated. What. The. Fuck. How is it cheating? He sacrificed himself to give his country the slightest of chances of going through, and they did it!
I saw people commenting that there should be a rule to award the goal anyway. What?
The day they do that and start stopping the clock to stare at televisions, is the day football dies.
I can understand using stuff to confirm if the ball went all in or not. Hell, if they can make it so that no time is wasted, even using instant replays for offsides would be nice (NOT to check for handballs and fouls. Getting away with it is part of the game, risking it all for the slightest of chances of success).
The beauty of football is that it's not just a game. It's all about companionship, dedication, honor, being human, taking huge risks and getting ultimate rewards.
What he did is in the rulebook. It is rewarded with a red card and a penalty, which it was. It PISSES ME OFF that douches say he was cheating. He's a freaking hero. As much as I liked Ghana, go fuck yourselves with vuvuzelas, you should have scored that penalty Gyan.

I want Uruguay - Germany.

Suarez  is a hero to his people, but you cannot deny he did not cheat.

Or else Henry isn't a cheater since he handballed to save his country, neither is Maradona, neither is Rooney for diving to earn a penalty. The fact of the matter is, he cheated.

To you, he might not be, but if a Greece player scored a handball goal in the final against Portugal, or if they stop a dead on goal and then Portugal missed the ensuring penalty and then knocked out because they could not win in penalty knockout, how would you feel?

I am sure you would liabling the cheater a cheat, rightly so. He broke the rules of the game and was punished, it does not change the fact he cheated. If a man stole from you but was punished, it does not change the fact he was a thief.

Fuck Uruguay and fuck Germany too, let's have the championless champions final, Dutch vs Spain (Most likely going to be a Holland vs Germany final though)
Title: Re: Official Football Thread of Queiroz OUT!
Post by: crackdude on July 04, 2010, 12:01:32 pm
I would feel like shit, but it's not "cheating" per say.
Is it unfair? Well, that's debatable. But it's IN THE RULES: you do it, you get a red card and other team gets a penalty. It's not cheating. He did not went around the rules. The rules punish this action.
Also, I cannot see how your 'thief' analogy works out here.. He didn't steal anything, and that doesn't compare really to cheating :/

You could say that Maradona and Henry cheated, since they didn't get punished. They (at least indirectly) went behind the rules and did something they weren't punished for.
But Suarez was! He knew what was going to happen. He did not cheat. He did an illegal move to prevent the goal, which works out ok 1 every 1000 times.

I can remember Abel Xavier doing the same thing in Euro 2000 against France. We lost because of the following penalty and had to play the rest of the game with 10 man. He took the risk, he didn't get the reward. He also did not cheat.

What in Earth's good name are you even arguing about, do not take this the wrong way, but what do you think cheating means? For me it's the following...

"Cheating is an act of lying, deception, fraud, trickery, imposture, or imposition. Cheating characteristically is employed to create an unfair advantage, usually in one's own interest, and often at the expense of others, Cheating implies the breaking of rules."

He broke the rules because the rules state NO USE of your hands. The rules do not state outfielded players are allowed to use your hands but must be red carded, no where is this ever stated. That punishment exists so no one breaks the rules, he broke the rule, breaking the rules make you a cheat. How can you argue any other way?

Just because you were caught in the act does not mean you were not cheating, it just means you were caught.

Quote from: "crackdude"
Also, I cannot see how your 'thief' analogy works out here.. He didn't steal anything, and that doesn't compare really to cheating :/

You just destroyed the hopes of a billion or so people who were all almost behind just one country. Some can say it was even worse.

And the thief analogy works fine because you say as long as someone gets punished, he is not x, he is still x, he just happened to be caught doing it.

Now you are saying he did an illegal move, an illegal move is considered cheating. If I fitted my car out with nitro in a race that was strictly nitro free, and won it, you would say it was an illegal move, which IS cheating.
Title: Re: Official Football Thread of Queiroz OUT!

Stop trying to compare this to life situations, I fail to see how it compares lol
If you could add nitrous for the expense of the other racer starting the race 20 seconds before you it could be something to ponder about.

That's what happened.
The way the rules are made, he traded his participation in the next match and a penalty for Ghana's goal.
Theoretically, most of the time that is a good thing cause (1) the goal isn't scored in the last second (leaving the opposing team with one less player for the rest of the match) and (2) the penalty taker isn't an idiot and shoots it high.

The advantage is theoretically on Ghana's side. It wasn't due to before mentioned circumstances. Well, that's too bad for them.

Suarez did what he had to do. In fact, even Fucile tries to do the same thing but he fails.
But what I think is really stupid is the dumbasses on the BBC site saying that Ghana should have been awarded the goal anyway and Suarez should have gone off anyway. Now that is a fucking unfair trade-off no? What the fuck do they thinks this is? Basketball with it's gay goaltending?

EDIT:

Holland have, with Germany, been the most impressive team during the entire campaign, from start to finish, they have been superior than everyone except ze Germans and it really shows.

It's just a shame that Robben thinks he is Maradona and insists on not passing to v Persie, that opportunity near the end to make it 4-1 is a pure example. He might regret moments like that in the final. You would think he would pass to the player who is the least selfesh after all.

True. The whole match wasn't really that impressive. Holland kind of underestimated uruguay and indeed robben couldve made 4-1 with that goal. Instead it ended up 3-2 with a tedious ending.

Allthough they have won I wasn't really satisfied with their play.

Seriously I expected much more of Holland. I mean, they started the match strongly, but after the goal they did nothing. And I mean it for the full rest of the game. The 2 goals in the second half come against the possessive game by Uruguay.
I've read different opinions though.

Still, in my opinion, Holland did not show enough to go through to the final. Uruguay had so much heart into it.. Now the final will be tedious. Neither Holland nor Germany are having a fighting spirit. They are just kinda crusin' by. Holland showed its shit against Brasil, but today they kinda disappointed me. Maybe this is also because I wanted Uruguay to win this, but whatever..

(and no, I do not believe Spain will have the slightest of chances tomorrow)

I think a lot has come down to circumstance really. v Persie was out injured for five months so his returned wouldn't have been as effective as one would hope (Though thanks to this, he has extra energy compared to everyone else) and him being the spearhead of your attack, you really need him in top form which unfortunately the injury has deprieved him of (Damn you Italy!)

Robben was injured, but is also greedy, add to that the amount of time he could have slipped in other players but went for glory himself...

Kuyt is a great workman like player, I think he is more of a midfielder who hurries the play, his technique otherwise is pretty terrible for a Holland player

The only player in your attack that has any form has the disadvantage of being the shortest in your team.

Overall though, I think they played as good as they could in this formation, mind my language, but compared to the top defence, Netherlands defence is a bit shit, so they sacrifice that extra bit in attack for a little more in defence. Worked out pretty well for you guys so far!

Thought on the basis of chances, Netherlands slightly deserved it more than Uruguay.

I was dissapointed and bored out of my mind.

Germany was too slow, that by the time they actually reached Spain's field, the entire Spanish team closed all possible lanes. Casillas defended like once in the entire second half.

The only time Spain made a fool out of themselves was when Pedro pretty much missed a chance to make it two nil.

But honestly, as great as Spain is, they just bore me. Watching the team pass the ball around gets very boring after 20 minutes.

I was hoping for a Germany - Holland final.

To me the World Cup ends with Germany - Uruguay, after that I don't care...

Spain deserved to be champions, I don't know what you're really talking about simply because they lost one game in the group stages, using that logic, since Netherlands won every single game up until the final, they should have won it. That's not how football works, Inter Milan lost to Barca and a newbie team in the group stages, are you saying they are not deserved Champions League winners? I mean if I looked at Italy's qualifying campaign, or Brazil before them, or France etc I could find one loss in there.

Also I thought something would come back to bite Robben and I was right.

Quote from: "crackdude"

This is football's cancer.

Yes, let us take out the fact that almost every opponent they played against them happened to be playing extremely good defensive football.

No, you should realistically look at the fact, Xavi has made more chances than anyone else this World Cup, Spain have had more shots on goal than any other team, they have done more passes this tournament and Xavi happens to be the highest passer in this tournament.

To call Spain football cancer is ludicrous, the evidence just does not stack up outside of some selective figures. If you want to call them something, call them play acting sissy little girls who know how to moan like a real woman.

Over all happy for Fabregas but get the hell away from those Barca players as soon as possible. Felt Netherlands consistently let van Persie get isolated and didn't really support him, could have been a different game if Robben actually knew he existed, felt sorry for him.

To be fair, Netherlands should have been reduced to ten, even nine, men much much earlier then they did. Overall though, I agree Forlan is player of the tournament, he grabbed Uruguay kicking and screaming to the final, would have hoped he could at least win fourth place but alas, ze Germans were just a bit better than his team.

Overall the world cup continues to provide a good break between wishing players don't get hurt to the start of real football.

Shame he flopped so hard at Manchester United, should have played for Arsenal instead back then, would have worked much better with Henry and Bergkamp. But deserved indeed, Forlan would be my player of the tournament. It's been a good year for him, the Spanish cup and UEFA cup.

Also, since the octopus is psychic, he actually saw the future, not made it. Meaning the future was pre-determined. So that means you have to take it up with the caretaker of time itself!

I must add this world cup has been pretty poor, but since Bendtner is the only injured player in the tournament, IT'S BEEN A FANTASTIC WORLD CUP!

Thank goodness v Persie or Fabregas did not break down, we would be so screwed.

A team wins a world cup with an average of 1,1 goals per match.

If you want to call them something, call them play acting sissy little girls who know how to moan like a real woman.
y u mad tho

This World Cup was the one with less goals per match of all time.
The "problem" with Spain is that they completely dominate the game. They have complete dominance over the opposition every game. That is good. What it's not good is to not take advantage of it to score more goals.
What happens most of the time is that Spain just controls when they want to attack and just pass the ball around without much pressure. They FORCE the opponent to play defensively.
Don't get me wrong, this is great! ...for them. For the show it's pretty lame. That's why this final was a total snorefest.

I may have taken a specific statistic apart, but it also happens that that is the most important one. Few goals may not mean fewer excitement. But 1-0 wins and complete dominance over the opposition does. Sorry I just don't like to watch Spain play football, at all.

You took the words completely out of my mouth.

I would also like to add that they have the ability to make the match entirely boring, because of said dominance and lack of goals.

Have you actually been watching any of Spain's matches? Even in the final, they had 5 glorious chances (Ramos, Villa, Fabregas and two from Puyol) yet they didn't take any of them. They've had a problem in their clinical finishing ever since Torres became crooked, this does not make them football cancer.

Again, the fact they had most shots on goal than any other team shows they tried to take advantage of it, most goal keepers were just having an excellent match against them.

And yes, this world cup has one of the least amount of goals, but that does not change the fact of what you are arguing for Spain being football cancer.

Quote from: "crackdude"
What happens most of the time is that Spain just controls when they want to attack and just pass the ball around without much pressure. They FORCE the opponent to play defensively.

The Swiss are defensive, Portugal are mindnumbingly boring and defensive, the Germans sat there for the counter which never came because Spain defended better than all the other teams and Netherlands even made a point of interrupting their play though fouling and harassing them. These teams were not forced, it was in their game plan.

All these teams set up shop earlier on and, especially seeing the Swiss, thought they could catch Spain out and win 1-0, they couldn't, really. The teams Spain faced all played extremely defensive football.

Chillie decided to play attacking football and lo and behold, that was an exciting game.

Quote from: "crackdude"
Don't get me wrong, this is great! ...for them. For the show it's pretty lame. That's why this final was a total snorefest.

Finals usually are snorefests. League games are were real excitements lay. Besides, did you see how Netherlands were trying to kill everyone who was not Dutch? Half of Spain's players are lucky to still be able to play football (Alonso and Ineista in particular)

And they still played better than almost everyone overall barring Brazil and Germany. The tournament was bad, but Spain was in the top three of best teams. I realize you are Portuguese and trying to make you say they played good football is the same as me saying Tottenham are a good team, but let's not go overboard with calling them football's cancer.

Quote from: "crackdude"
I may have taken a specific statistic apart, but it also happens that that is the most important one. Few goals may not mean fewer excitement. But 1-0 wins and complete dominance over the opposition does. Sorry I just don't like to watch Spain play football, at all.

The most important one... When we are talking about winning.

You are making an accusation on their general play, where you are meant to use every single stat. Otherwise Portugal played wonderful football, which we know was just not the case.

Spain may not have dazzled like they did two years ago, but they are not football cancer and played some good football in tournament. Both attacking and defensive.

I'm not going to extend myself a lot on this, cause it really is a matter of opinion. I think Spain kills every game. You might agree with that. And Spain scored very little goals, this is a fact.
For me, these two things combined make games quite lame. Spain may have most chances at goal, but that's because of their incredible dominance, not because of brilliant attacking. Whenever there's brilliant attacking there's goals. Proof of that is that Spain's goals (onside or not) were usually very good. Unfortunately, Spain did not manage to make a decent amount of them this World Cup.
In my opinion, Spain's performance this World Cup was the bare-bones to win it. And that's why I think it sucked really. Not Spain, but the show they put out.

I don't love Uruguay because they are great technically, I loved Uruguay cause they put out several hell of games with great spirit. Spain did not have that, and the goals scored is a reflection of it in my opinion.

The whole point of a football game is to kill a game to win it. Either through scoring many goals or shutting teams down as how Spain did, excellent levels of pressing and fantastic ball rotention. Spain scored very little goals, yes, fact, as well as fact they have played better than anyone else in this tournament. Facts backed up by statistics.

Also they played against four teams that shut up shop against them and yet managed a way through three of them.

Quote from: "crackdude"

Possession football IS another form of attack, its using the ability to hold onto the ball to create space for players by drag defenders out of position, for example;

[youtube:1dhn5i8b]LIzqOJdk7Jo[/youtube:1dhn5i8b]

Why shouldn't this be considered an attacking move?

Furthermore I ask again, how many of Spain's game did you watch? Torres had plenty of chances to make them win early games, even against the Swiss, even more. There was a reason he was dropped by del Bosque.

Quote from: "crackdude"
In my opinion, Spain's performance this World Cup was the bare-bones to win it. And that's why I think it sucked really. Not Spain, but the show they put out.

Still does not make them the cancer of football. Fact is they met four very good defenses and found a way through three of them.

Quote from: "crackdude"
I made an accusation that their play style was boring. I'm not saying it was bad for them. They did good, that's why they won. But it could have been so much more.

If Torres was not crooked, if four teams did not play extremely defensive football, if they were more clinical, yes.

Spain played great football technically. But that was it.

To assume Spain did not have the same level of spirit is just wrong.

Did you see how they hounded every team for the ball, how much they pressed? How much they wanted the ball? That IS spirit there. Did you see how well the back four defended? Again, spirit.

They may not have scored 11 goals like Uruguay, but their whole unit fought to make sure they never let it more than 2 in the entire tournament.

I don't know if you guys checked the 'official fifa website' but it is quite cool, full of statistics and numbers in general.

Number of goals scored/taken by each team:
http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/statistics ... goals.html (http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/statistics/teams/goals.html)

Players score rating according to the 'Castrol Analysts'
http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/statistics ... nking.html (http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/statistics/castrolindex/ranking.html)
They think 'Forlan' is the 46th best player of the competition...

I saw all Spain games except for the one they lost.
I've yet to say they played horribly.

"shutting teams down as how Spain did, excellent levels of pressing and fantastic ball rotention. Spain scored very little goal, yes, fact, as well as fact they have played better than anyone else in this tournament. Facts backed up by statistics."
As I said, technically Spain played great. But in reality this kind of possessive attack made their games uninteresting to watch.
Spain's high possession game style prevents other teams from attacking fluidly. This works great for Spain but it's horrible for the game.

I don't understand how a team having the highest number of passes of the tournament and scoring so little is a good thing. It just means they spent more time passing the ball around than scoring goals. Spain had also a horrible finishing missing unbelievable goals. This is not beautiful football. Spain did not impress.
They are Barcelona without the creative impulses of Messi and Henry and the scoring finishing of Etoo.

And how did Mourinho win, hmmm? He actually pressed Barcelona for the ball as much as Barcelona did against other teams. Did you see the Dutch, Germans or Portugal press Spain for the ball, no, you didn't. It's not Spain's fault the other teams decided to play organized defences that made the game boring. Not Spain's possession football.

Quote from: "crackdude"

Spain did impress compared to everyone else, the World Cup was poor, yes, but Spain did better than every team out there in everything except scoring goals, because they played teams who decided playing 2 defensive midfielders would be a good idea to strifle them. Chelsea did the exact same thing to Barcelona two seasons ago and it did not work.

Again, discrediting a fact like that means very little, the first time Uruguay came up against two good defences, they fell apart, even Ghana made them struggle. Spain had to play teams that all decided to play extremely defensive football, when this occurs they will not be able to score many goals.

Quote from: "crackdude"
They are Barcelona without the creative impulses of Messi and Henry and the scoring finishing of Etoo.

Henry has not started a game for Barcelona in a long time and Eto'o has been gone for a year. And Barcelona still play fantastic football because they do not play against teams that shut up shop. When they do what happens? Oh yes that newbie team beat them at the Nou Camp last season.

So Arsenal dealt the draw with Liverpool with a trashing of Blackpool at home 6-0, Chelsea recorded their second 6-0 win of the season over Wigan and Newcastle showed they mean business to stay in the league this season with a thumping 6-0 win over Aston Villa.

It's all going off this season so far!

First three matches of the season from the first group stage of the league cup. We drew once, won once, lost once. Luckily it was enough for us to advance. Our goalkeeper isn't very trustworthy though. The man had some incredible misses. I hope he gets some self confidence as the league kicks off next week.

Something is clearly wrong with Benfica right now.

It's bad enough that they lost two games already in part thanks to their goalie.
But right now, only Fabio Coentrao is playing on a higher level, I mean he's carrying the entire team right now.

Sporting won against Maritimo.

And Beira Mar is already losing to Fc Porto, no surprise there.

Here's to another wasted season for Beira Mar.

They officially stated that Roberto isn't going to be loaned nor sacked. TSF and their bullshit as it seems.

Porto is playing really well. Love to see continuous offensive pressure, unlike Jesualdo used to do.
Ukra broke his face. Hope he gets better soon.

Now there's this SportTV channel that transmits ALL Premier League games every day. Really getting into the Premier League. Chelsea is on a 6-0 streak, they are really strong. Also I absolutely love their secondary black/orange kit. I'm buying one of those next month or so.

^internationals are bad for your health. Specialist Aki-at would agree.

Three things I would like to discuss.

- Gil Vicente started the league, after three league cup matches. So far so good, we managed to capture two ever important wins. Personally I don't think it's that great since the press is already calling us "candidates" for promotion. Once you become a candidate, you are a target. I don't like being a target.

- The Portuguese FA is a joke. After the complete idiocy surrounding the sack of the last manager they now are after a part-time Mourinho. According to the press, he seems interested. Of course, Real Madrid's Florentino Perez is not a big fan of the idea. I also heard it would be a two match deal, which makes things even more ridiculous. I mean, it's José Mourinho, best manager in the universe and the forever, but he can't walk on water. Yet.

- Arsenal vs Braga. I had some errands to run in Braga yesterday, one of which involved going to their largest shopping centre. To my surprise, every television set inside that place had a rerun of the match. The city is in self mutilation mode.

2 games in 6 is 33%. What is he talking about?

I might be over a week late to support it but...

Fuck yeah! Take that you cock wearing fools! That's what happens when you face a REAL football team.

Also I am not looking forward to Chelsea AT ALL, too many injuries, even our goalkeepers gotten injured now too. At this rate, even the whole coaching stuff and Arsene is going to get injured...

NOOO. Arsenal lost to Chelsea.

But Sporting scoring 5 goals against Levski was awesome.

I am back for another Gil Vicente recap. After the two first league matches we had our first cup match. No game is an easy game, yet we scored a 2-0 victory over a third division side. We played another two league matches. We drew a team that was relegated from the first division last year and managed to beat a candidate. We now stand at the top, still undefeated, with 10 points. I do not like this position. We have had good starts. The problem comes afterwards, the target on our backs starts to get bigger and eventually everyone wants to beat the leaders. I do not have any hopes for promotion. Being in first place is very uncomfortable.  With the internationals break we'll only play again on the 16th, a cup match against a first division side. A few days later we play another first division side, now for the league cup. On the following weekend the league returns. Three home games in a week make my wallet cry.

Another massive win for Sporting.

5-1 against Gent. It made me moist.

It hasn't been a good week for Arsenal.

They lost to the evil Tottenham Hotspurs. And now to SC Braga.

Wenger maye have lost the battle, but he hasn't lost the war!

And after that stunning 4-2 win, we are yet again 2 points off the top! Nasri and Chamakh are going to be legends for us at this rate! Rational Aki-at has returned.

Also if Mourinho is the Special One, than Pep is the Greatest One.

I love the final reaction from him on that game. One of the best Wenger moment ever.

Also MANCHESTER UNITED "HAMMERED" BY WEST HAM

SPECTOR GAVE A SPIRITED PERFORMANCE!

HIS GHOULS WERE UNHUMAN!

Okay, enough of the bad jokes, Manchester United have been duped out of the Carling Cup by West Ham 4-0, a terrific result for the Hammers (IE Elijah Wood's team from Green Street) and a problem for Fergie, as the next generation for United is looking shockingly weak.

Whilst Arsenal cruise into the semi-final now with a 2-0 win over Wigan which could and should have been more, but alas, what can you do?

I hope we do manage to win the Carling Cup, if only to shut up the Tottenham fans...

This was me from just under a year ago;

What the fuck half of our team started to break down and we still manage to hold Barca to a draw.

I think that just shows how much potential this team truly has.

This was Crackdude's reply

Not by a long shot. Arsenal went in there like pussies.

And I even pointed out how bad their goalkeeper was;

Quote from: "Aki-at"
How? He got in the way of Fabregas' shot which probably would have resulted in a goal anyway knowing how shit Valdes is, therefore, he blocked a goal scoring attempt.

And he proved it yesterday night.

Can you tell I feel vindicated? Of course I do! What's more, even with all their possession football, we both had exactly the same number of chances.

We might lose the return leg, we might lose it in comedic fashion with Barcelona beating us, but tonight we've done what no other team has done, we've beaten Barcelona, at the top of their game, with ATTACKING football, Inter beat them with fantastic defensive football, so did Rubin Kazan and so did Hercules, but we've done it with attack, our best form of defence was offense. Xavi might go on about Barcelona DNA but yesterday, Jack Wilshire showed what Arsenal DNA looks like.

Onwards to further glories!

Not bad, Man U. is leading but Arsenal is 5 points away.

Of course, Manchester City and Tottenham are still too far away to pose a threat to their leadership. I'm also puzzled about Chelsea, I mean, they above Liverpool. I mean, come on...

Update: Wait, was the Tottenham - Arsenal match postponed? It's scheduled for Feb 26th, but there isn't an hour.

4 points away, every point counts! Arsenal does have the easier of the remaining games (We've already played Chelsea twice and Liverpool at Anifield, whilst United are still to do either) add to this that the game at the end of April will be Arsenal v Manchester United at our home ground, it seems destined to be a championship showdown.

Going to be a funky end to the Premier League this season.

Yes, we have the Carling Cup final against Birmingham on the 27th February, and as awesome as Arsenal, I dont think we can play two games in two days, unfortunately.

I tell you one thing, £50 million? My ass he's worth that much!

If only this would happen (http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQmO3S2eLPE) again, but with ManU instead of good ol' Liverpool.

Chelsea won against ManU.

And Arsenal is stuffing Leyton Orient like a Thansgiving Turkey.

That was good.

Benfica just equalized in Sporting match. That sucked.
