Title: Japan creates Magazine for boys who dress like girls

(http://http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/9/2010/04/500x_15746253.jpg) New Japanese comic publication  "WAaI! boys in skirts" is hoping to capitalize on the video game, anime  and cosplay trend of young men dressing up like young women. Even one professional  fighter (http://http://kotaku.com/5504215/wearing-a-dress-this-cosplayer-will-kick-your-butt/gallery/) is into it!
(http://http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/9/2010/04/500x_09c398f2.jpg) The first issue will introduce  anime that feature characters in drag as well as video games like Atchi Muite Koi (http://http://www.asa-pro.com/top/new/index.html)  (NSFW) and Cross Days, which features a cross-dressing protagonist. (The  game also features a most not-safe-for-work  peripheral (http://http://kotaku.com/5454419/nsfw-is-this-the-most-delayed-erotic-game-ever).)
(http://http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/9/2010/04/500x_bridget_figure_face.jpg) If that wasn't enough, the  publication's debut issue will also be bundled with schoolgirl athletic  shorts in a "large" size. Large enough for a man, but good enough for a  woman. Or something. Well, nobody's  perfect! (http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vQl7U6EOak)
For gamers, Bridget from Guilty Gear is one of the most famous male  characters dressed up as a female. Some gamers don't even know that  she's a he!
Last spring, a gaming cafe-slash-dinner bar called "NEWTYPE (http://http://newtype.ms/)" opened in Akihabara — with the  term "new type" coming from Gundam and referring to a newtype of human  evolution. According to website Akibanana (http://http://akibanana.com/?q=node/1662), the staff is  made up of otoko no musume ("male daughters"). On week nights,  NEWTYPE holds multi-player PSP gaming sessions and even has loaner  copies for PSP-less customers.
(http://http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/9/2010/04/500x_doods.jpg) WAaI! boys in skirts vol. 1 goes on  sale April 24, priced at ¥1,200 (US$13).

I'll be hitting a Japanese book store in NYC next week, so I'll be on the lookout for "WAaI! girls with heaving breasts and guns on their shoes"

There have been magazines like this in Japan for years and years. This is not news, we already knew the place was like this.

What you did not post is just how fucking creepy it is. Most of the male cosplayers get masks of the girl characters they want to be (similar to hard plastic Halloween masks we all know of) and spandex under the costume to make them seem petite and do poses and stuff in front of a camera for hours without saying anything. It is really, really unsettling.

Also, Shadi. Do you ever post any of your thoughts in any thread you ever made outside of "lol" or that image of Reggie? Why post so much but never give any of your opinions?

You forgot that he talks about how he hates Nintendoz.

Anyway outside of lol, reggie and nintendoz hate, shadi does not think.  For when he is not posting this:  he is getting bummed.   hard.

I could picture a coffee table book with that theme. Space Channel 5, Bayonetta, Code Veronica, Streets of Rage. Probably no Nintendo games unless we're talkin' Metroid. Zelda and Peach are not hot.

I talked to the publisher, and they signed a deal with G to release all of those crossdressing images of you that you posted on SEGA Nerds a few months ago.

It's pretty common to see these litteral girly men on TV and most media outlets in Japan. I feel bombarded by these "traps" nearly every time I turn on the TV now. Some of them are admittedly attractive but it's just wrong.

Last year I watched a TV show that had a mock beauty show for teen males who dressed up as women. There were some really good ones on the show, even better than some of the real females in the audience that were cooing and aweing at every skirt wearing boy. :)

There's a really popular one named Haruna Ai that is on TV often. It was born male and grew up male but now he's got tits and may or may not have his junk still. I actually think he's kind of funny but he really acts too girly even for ladie's standards. He makes a pretty convincing woman when he doesn't get too upset and drops his voice a few octaves... He is in the "newhaafu" class of people. We'd call these people transvestites outside of Japan. But our view of Transvestites in America are usually associated with the horrors presented in the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

EDIT: This is Haruna Ai. I totally forgot he won an international beauty contest last year too. The pride of Japan folks! :D

I would buy that magazine for myself and everyone I know.

Actually I'm shocked at how much of  a deep impact those pictures seem to have left on some people here! I can't turn around without someone 'reminding me' as if I was 'caught' and should be embarissed by pictures I choose to post.

I'm confused, when did dressing like a woman become a sign of gay pride.
