Title: My freelance DVD projects
Post by: Barry the Nomad on April 02, 2010, 08:35:03 am
Here's what I do to make money on the side, I design DVD covers for cable networks.  8-)

Pretty fun stuff! So far these are the only clients I've worked with, but more are on the horizon.

First one is AMC with their remake of The Prisoner. I watched the first episode and then designed this special edition AMC store exclusive set that includes the full series as well as a bonus disc inside a mini Rover ball. The bonus disc was supposed to reference the buyer by name at the intro screen and then assign then a unique ID number. The buyer also would have also received a card and a welcome letter from the village. Sadly, due to the series low ratings and low pre-order numbers, the project was canned. Good news is, I was paid in full :D Check out the mock-up:

The second project is very much alive and will drop soon. Showtime Boxing DVDs!

They'll be available here:

I don't get any money if you buy them, so this isn't a plea for you guys to "buy buy buy!"

Sorry I only use Bluray, what is DVD?

The prisoner was actually going to be BluRay, but AMC cut the budget, and since then have not released it on BluRay. Only DVD in a cheap paper case that I did not design.

I was just kidding with you, they look great. How much do you get paid per design? Just wondering.

Prisoner  case looks awesome.

Thanks!

Prisoner was $1000 (had it continued it would have been more), Boxing is a template and was an initial $300 and then $200 per title. I lowered the price as they promised more titles. I figured better to charge mid-range and produce a lot than charge high and produce a few.  8-)

I love the Prisoner stuff, that's pretty darn original, shame they couldn't go through with it.

You should work with SEGA and give the next Yakuza game a better boxart ;___;

Wow, that's a pretty cool concept you have there!

This. Except I'd replace "next Yakuza game" with "all games".

Thanks guys! Yeah, it would be fun to do some work with Sega... as long as I don't get my own "Bentley Jones" thread here hating on my "Cream the Rabbit: Egg Hunt DS" game covers.  :afroman:

I also did a "eco friendly dvd" seal for the Discovery Channel dvds but I never saw it in the wild.

That is really cool! Extremely good job for both!

Any chance you can work on a good boxset for Frasier, RENO911 or Monk? What about Chowder? :P

Telling you right now, I would be so gay for you if you made a good Quantum Leap or Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog set.

Frasier: Complete series stuffed into a giant Café Nervosa coffee cup
RENO911: Mini squad car containing the complete series, lights up and makes noises
Monk: complete series inside a rubber mold of Tony Shalhoub's head. he yells at you when the discs are out of order.
Chowder: I got nothin'...

I agree on Quantum Leap and AoStH, but a series that REALLY needs a decent box is Green Acres. They only released half the episodes, and each season was in a different style case (season 1: slide-out paper sleeve, season 2: two mini-cases in a paper sleeve, season 3: standard black case).

And don't get me stared on the Complete Newsradio. LITERALLY all the discs stacked on a spindle.

Absolute SHIT.

I love the ideas, though Tony's head would most likely look creepy or weird. But Chowder is easy man, come on! An oven!

How do you get this kind of work? It does not sound like you can just recommend yourself. I want to make a collection of the Irate Gamer ;)

I got the jobs via a friend of the family, and then he recommended me to others in his industry. I work with a third party DVD distributor who handles exclusives and DVD-on-demand. They also make Disney World tourism DVDs, but I haven't worded on those.

Irate Gamer collection would be a mini fully functioning incinerator ;)

Yeah I remember reading that too. Apparantly you don't have to waste time with multiple disk spindles and all that crap, it's just the one stack of DVDs! Brilliant!
