I saw Avatar on Sunday. All I've got to say is...
Damn furries
But no seriously, the 3D is a mixed bag, maybe it's because of where I was sitting, but some scenes did have really good 3D that felt you were actually there but others it was hardly noticeable (I had to keep taking the glasses off to check if it was a 3D scene or not!) overall though, the scenes that had done the 3D well did it pretty damn well and hopefully the technology continues to improve.
The plot was pretty predictable and the characters were not all that great, but the CGI, especially towards the end of the film, was fantastic. Cameron is the man.
Now please go back and save Terminator, pretty please? =[

LOL Oh god, I remember watching the premiere of that on tv waaay back when.
It's actually quite creepy when the masks float about on their own. I hated the big nosed one. Also, there's something sexual about that movie. Domination masks or something...
If I'm snowed in tomorrow, I'll be watching Moon, the Darjeeling Limited and Saw 6.
Pretty much my thoughts. Technicalities aside, Avatar isn't anything special to go by. Also, did anyone notice how those flying creatures resemble the dragons from Panzer Dragoon? FFFYES! I almost said "Holy Shit Panzer Dragoon!"
(http://http://dietrichthrall.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/neverending-story.jpg)I watched this not to long ago, actually i downloaded and watched all of them.
The first one still has charm to it despite the cheese.

My god did that not age well... So... so bad.
Recently I watched Dark Crystal... I love that movie and I cannot fucking WAIT for the sequal in 2011!

Anyway, last movie I saw was Dead Man's Shoes

It was a good revenge movie, with good acting and a very good main character, but I didn't like it quite as much as I was expecting. The way he toys with/terrifies his victims was quite good especially.
Good movie, but Oldboy is still perched at the top of my favourite movie list, let alone favourite revenge movie.
Watched 17 Again and P.S I Love You ....Valentines Day :/ my mum picked the films
Ned Freedman: It's a classic transformation story. Are you now or have you ever been a Norse God, Vampire, or Time Traveling Cyborg?
Mike O' Donnell: I have know you since what, first grade? I think that maybe I would have told you!
Ned Freedman: Vampire wouldn't tell, Cyborg wouldn't know.
Just watched The Castle of Cagliostro for the first time last night. Awesome movie. I'd seen a few episodes of the Lupin III TV series, and always wanted to see this movie because of the whole Miyazaki connection.
A friend of mine picked it up on a trip to Toronto, and got a bunch of us together to watch it last night. I was really impressed with the animation quality for a movie from the '70s.
Some very funny moments too.

That's honestly one of my top movies of all time. Probably right behind Oldboy actually, taking the number 2 spot. I just love everything about it, and I feel it's almost perfect. The music, the story, the characters... I just can't get enough of that movie.
I've seen a few other Lupin movies too, I think First Contact would be my next favourite.
I watched Shutter Island last night at the theater.Loved Shutter Island, saw it two nights ago. Like you said, really well constructed, and it's intrigueing from start to finish.
I thought it was a really well done movie. The score, the performances, the cinematography... all very impressive.
I'm not going to really say much about the plot, so as not to spoil it, but the story was very well constructed. It's a movie that you could watch through several times, and pick up on a lot of little things throughout.
Plus it had an appearance by Elias Koteas, so that won me over (character actor, played Casey Jones in the old Ninja Turtles movies).
I still have the movie "The Informant" on my PC. Worth it or don't waste my precious time. :mrgreen:It's quite good actually, thats the one with Russel Crowe about Big Tobacco? Definitely worth checking out!
Having a Ghibli night tomorrow with some friends, The Castle of Cagliostro is the first movie on the list.
Castle of Cagliostro is one of my all time favourites! Make sure you watch Porco Rosso as well, thats another great Miyazaki movie. About a mercenary fighter pilot in Italy during the rise of facism, he's cursed to have a pig's head for what he saw in the War.
Saw Fanboys last night.(http://http://i47.tinypic.com/w1dyt2.jpg)
I very big meh, a recycled road-trip movie, but with a bunch of Star Wars geeks spouting endless puns and quotes from the original movies.
Had this movie come out a year or so after Episode 3 it might have been funnier, but years later, it's charm has just gone away...
The one part where Trekkies clash with our SW fans is midly creative and entertaining, but the rest... hmm just bored me.
Saw Sicko doc the other day. Makes me sick at the shitty health insurance system we have in the United States.
Saw the Informant, pretty alright movie, though I didn't think it was funny, more interesting.

I watched Laputa/Castle in the Sky with my girlfriend on Sunday.
I ended up enjoying it a lot more than expected. Kinda reminded me a bit of Skies of Arcadia with a lot of little things throughout.

Have you seen The Castle of Cagliostro? Highly recommended.
Yeah. We watched that a couple weeks ago.
I'd already seen Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and most of Kiki's Delivery Service.
Recently there was Castle of Cagliostro, Castle in the Sky and Ponyo.
I really want to check out My Neighbor Totoro too.
^ I didn't hear about Castle of Cagliostro inspiring Indiana Jones specifically, but I remember hearing rumours that he said the movie was the 'best adventure move ever' or that the opening car chase was the 'best ever seen in a movie'
I just can't praise Castle enough, I just love almost every single frame of that movie. I also really liked Porco Rosso, I'm surprised it's so low on your list actually, the other movies must be very good.
I've seen a bit of Spirited Away, but never really watched it carefully. I can't bring myself to watch something like Totoro though... it just seems... you know... :|
Princess Mononoke though, I'm sure i've seen like 5 minutes of that one at some point, it looked interesting. Was that the one set in fuedal Japan or something?
I watched the Black Cauldron for the first time the other day. I think it's the only main Disney animated feature that I hadn't seen yet.
It was an ok movie, but it kinda seemed like it was done by Don Bluth's "B" team instead of the same studio that cranked out The Rescuers Down Under, and The Jungle Book. It had its moments though, and the whole thing reminded me a lot of Ralph Bakshi's Wizards.
Funny how the one Disney film MEANT to be a trilogy fails at being completed, yet nearly every other Disney film gets a sequel.
Pocahontas 2? Seriously?
Being John Malkovich.

It was supposed to be part of a trilogy, but it is doubtful we will ever see the rest. Not that big of a deal, but the movie could have ended way better...
Did not know that... interesting. That dog/person/monkey thing kinda creeped me out though.

As for movies I have seen recently... Not really anything worth mentioning besides Disaster Movie. I am not sure how this kind of crap keeps being made, or why people keep seeing them, or why I keep watching them. Not only are they not funny, they are just outright a waste of time. The sad part is I saw at least one movie that was way worse than this.

The only thing going through my mind the whole time was how much the actor looked like Billy Idol/Brad Pitt and would have made a perfect John Constantine (avatar).

Kick Ass is not technically from Marvel. It belongs to an imprint from that company that specializes in adult comics, like in the same way Vertigo belongs to DC Comics, but they are treated as seperate entities.
Hotel Chevalier.
Yes it's just a short film, I'll watch Darjeeling Ltd tomorrow.
Yeah I saw Fantastic Mr.Fox in the cinema and loved it, I haven't seen that many Wes Anderson films, just that and the Life Aquatic but I really enjoyed both of them (Life Aquatic gets better with each watch).
If I enjoy this as much as I loved the other two then I'll rush out and pick up the Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore.
Groundhog Day - I hadn't seen this movie since I was a little kid, so I wasn't sure whether I'd be getting a good movie or a big disappointment. Thankfully, it turned out to be the former. It's smart, cheeky, mildly believable, and most of all, very fun and entertaining to watch. I liked it.
One of my favorite movies!I don't think it was really that long. But even if it was, what would you be able to do about it? Nothing, of course. You can't commit suicide or get out of your situation. You'd just have to learn to cope with it eventually, just like he did.
I forgot where I heard it, but supposedly the movie took place within 30-some years time. I would have been way worse off than Bill if that were me!

Rubin (the film's writer) had also originally envisioned Andie MacDowell's character Rita reliving the day with Phil, and portrayed the pair as being stuck in the time loop for far longer than in the final film, possibly for thousands of years (Phil tracked time by reading a page of a book each day and had managed to read through the entire public library). Ramis states in the commentary that he believes 10 years pass. The website Wolf Gnards calculated the time spent as 8 years, 8 months, and 16 days: based on him spending 3 years learning to play the piano, 3 years learning to ice sculpt, 2 years learning French, and 6 months learning to throw cards into a hat. However in an e-mail response to Wolf Gnards, Ramis said "I think the 10-year estimate is too short. It takes at least 10 years to get good at anything, and alloting for the down time and misguided years he spent, it had to be more like 30 or 40 years"
Okay... Just saw Crank: High Voltage. The single most batshit insane movie ever made.
I'm thinking of seeing the Prince of Persia movie on Friday. Anyone else think they'll be heading out to watch it?

Just came back from a Prince of Persia screening.
I can't believe it... A good movie based off a video game.
An OK story(though too much exposition i.e. characters constantly having to remind viewers of the situation or what's the task at hand) with some nice twists, a good cast, likeable characters(kudos to Jake Gyllenhall, Genma Atterson and Alfred Molina), good production values and overall fun to watch.
Take note Hollywood, stop hiring second-rate directors and third-rate writers to do video game movies. And get a good studio, at least in Disney we can trust.
It's a shame that will not make Pirates numbers, but that's in part due to the film somewhat poor marketing.

Ageed on all counts.
Saw Twilight with a friend, yes the first one. OK. I have never seen it before but she is a fan (like most girls) so I saw it. I could not stop laughing.
First of all. WTF. I know they got the 'teen girl' down with a T. But Edward is a fucking retard. He does not sleep at night, awesome, but he spends watching a girl sleep. Creep. Not only that, the plot has holes. First of all, what happen to the girl hunter vampire? They all forgot about her?
Also glitter in the sunlight. So fucking gay.
Also glitter in the sunlight. So fucking gay.So fucking awesome! ^__^ I wish every hawt guy was glittery in the sunlight.
You try to hard to be gay Fluffy. No, I just think it's cute, that's all. =P Cute stuff doesn't necessarily have to be gay, either.
Prince of Persia. I never played the recent games so I don't know how they fare against the film. The last time I saw something based off of a videogame (Max Payne) I promised I would never do it again. I only realised I was going to watch PoP when the title was up on the screen. Until then I thought I was going to watch Robin Hood. That actresses performance was pretty bad but overall the film is quite enjoyable. I was a bit surprised, I suppose I'd be angry if I had played the games.
- Ironman 2: very good! Captain America shield, Thor hammer, Black Widow, I love the references to the Avengers. I just don't like Nick Fury black. Why the hell he is black? Everyone knows he is caucasian. Black Widow fight scene is not good at all; Mistique can fight ways better than her.
I don't think it has anything to do with 'needing a black person in every movie' rather than whoever designed Nick Fury in the comics liked Sam Jackson and based the new design on him. I don't mind it myself, and I personally think Sam Jackson is a great actor (even though he just plays himself each time).This. I think Samual L. Jackson does a great job.
I agree that Kingpin being black was retarded, but that whole movie was a piece of shit.

Ip Man.Right?
Fucking brilliant.
I saw Toy Story 3 last night.
OH MY GOD IT IS AMAZING. Ken is the funniest character.
I took my nephew to see Toy Story 2 in 3D.
The movie was great, I hadn't seen in it in years, but it still felt fresh. The 3D was more of a gimmick, there weren't those many 3D stuff hapenning.
The only real downside? Having to pay almost 7€ for a movie that when it came out, ticket prices were less than 3€.
Now I'm sorta looking foward to Toy Story 3, shame it only arrives in Portugal at the end of this month.
Saw Punisher War Zone. I love the brutal take on the Punisher, but the slap stick villains sort of seemed really off setting.
Ray and Polly Cutler (Max Showalter and Jean Peters) go on a delayed honeymoon to Niagara Falls, only find their reserved cabin occupied by another couple, George and Rose Loomis (Joseph Cotten and Marilyn Monroe). They politely accept another, less-desirable cabin, and the two couples become acquainted.Of course [spoiler:292k1bwq]her husband is right on his suspicions and the lover is out to kill him[/spoiler:292k1bwq].
George and Rose have a troubled marriage. She is much younger and very attractive. He is overly jealous and appears to have problems with depression and anger management. It is implied that he may have just been released from a mental hospital. The Cutlers witness George's rage firsthand the following evening; when Rose joins an impromptu party outside, he storms out and breaks a record playing a tune that he suspects has special meaning for his wife.
Kick-Ass - 4/5 I was not really sure what to expect with this, but I liked it a lot. My only complaints come from how they tried to pass off the story as realistic as possible but then had Hit-Girl doing insane stunts that professionals would not ever be able to pull off in real life. She was the best actor of the lot though, I think.
Toy Story 3 - 5/5 I cannot think of the last time there was a 'perfect trilogy' released, but it really is. It is not the best in the series, but it is impossible not to love this film, especially if you have been with the series since the start like me. Ending made me tear up a bit, I'LL ADMIT!
I've just finished watching Star Trek 2009...
[spoiler:1ne26n2q]So basically now the original series, the first 6 films, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager never occured...[/spoiler:1ne26n2q]
^If you are looking for more old films, I suggest checking out
* Casablanca
* The Maltese Falcon
* It's a Wonderful Life
* Mr Smith Goes to Washington
* Anything by the Marx Bros.
[spoiler:2mo1ermy]No, it's just that the new films are going to be in an alternate timeline. It's like Zelda--there's a timeline split. I actually like this idea, because it means they're free to do what they want with the characters without messing with canon. Awesome[/spoiler:2mo1ermy]
Star Trek wasn't as good as it could have been, but it was far from the worst of the films. It actually felt more like a Star Wars movie than a Star Trek one. I just hope they get a bit deeper into the story in the second one--I trust that they will.
Oh I've heard what they've done, but the problem is
[spoiler:3ow6qzna]The original Spock is brought into the series. If he didn't exist, then I could agree with it being an alternate reality, a reboot, but since the original Spock has come into this series, it would be easy to assume that the original timeline no longer happens. Just leaving out original Spock would have benefited the film greatly, as it is I feel they've affected the timeline of the entire franchise[/spoiler:3ow6qzna]
Yeah it was not the worst Star Trek film or Star Trek related media and I do agree with you it felt more like Star Wars. It really did feel like I was watching just an action film then feeling anything practicularly Star Trek about it except the characters.
Haven't seen Casablanca and not too familiar with the Marx Bros. (I know, that's a crime), but the middle three are fantastic. Particularly Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, which will always be relevant to American politics. Probably one of my top 10 favorite films.
Jimmy Stewart is the man.
slobberknocker.
Slobberknocker is a fight/hit that is so brutal it 'knocks the slobber' from your mouth.
I only heard it because Jim Ross uses the term a lot, it is pretty weird sounding.

Just like MadeMang said. A fight that along the lines of something that would break out in a saloon in a western movie. Except less guns, and more heads getting punched off.

Definitely will be seeing Inception. Was hoping to go see it at IMAX especially.
I also saw Inception last Sunday.
Wow... Just... wow.
Deep, complex but doesn't patronize the audience either.
A great movie from DiCapprio.

@Monkeroony: I can't remember if you've said whether or not you've seen Fantastic Mr. Fox, but it's full of Wes Anderson greatness.

The old radio shows with Orson Welles are pretty fantastic too.
Isn't there some evil Chinese dude with ten magical rings? They've been hinting at him almost as much as the Lizard in the Spider-Man movies. Just use the damn villain and stop hinting!
Christopher Nolan will direct Superman, we can take consolation from that! As for Spiderman, it's true, the reboot doesn't make much sense. Still, I hope it does the series good since the first one was great, the second one was alright and the third one was downright bad with all that stupid emo stuff. Can I have Kirsten Dunst's boobs back though? :afroman:
Oops, my bad. Thanks for the correction. I've never been much of a Superman fan but I hear Natalie Portman could be playing Lois Lane. That would spike my interest.
My only fear is that Snyder and Nolan will make Superman a flawed, brooding character which he is not. I always saw Superman as so perfect, that he was imperfect when sharing a planet with a bunch of idiots like us. I also liked that his father was a guiding force in how we lived his life (at least he was in the old movies).
Haven't seen it yet, but I added it to my Netflix queue if only because I just discovered how nice the soundtrack is:Speed Racer, I thought, was a fantastic film! Really, I can understand why it bombed at the box office - anime fans will automatically shit on the film and the people who grew up with it will not care or will not understand this film. I actually hated the anime as a kid, but I took my nephew to see this and I loved it more than he did.

Why did you even watch it, then? Most people could tell it was a stinkbomb from a mile away.
Maybe it's because it looked so bad that he/she we went to see it. I know several people that go and view bad movies just to see if it's as bad as they seem from the trailers. That and to see if enough Alcohol does indeed make the film better.Yeah, that's true. I myself learned my lesson about paying to see bad movies after going to see Dragonball Evolution in theaters. ^^;;; There was no joy to be had with that film - not even for making fun of it.

I saw Enter the Dragon in my journey to see every movie that everyone else in the world but me has seen.I actually met Jonh Saxon at a comic convention, and got him to sign my Enter the Dragon poster.
First half of it is kind of lame and boring, story is easy to follow and all that. Then later on the action gets pretty damn cool, you can really see the people who fought in the movie have fought for years and years. The camera work was really bad some of the times, but the hall of mirrors scene at the end was just brilliant, amazing even.
I saw Enter the Dragon in my journey to see every movie that everyone else in the world but me has seen.
Anyway, if you liked Enter the Dragon you should check out 'In the way of the Dragon'. That's the one where he fights a young Chuck Norris. Not only does he fight him, but he rips out his effing chest hair. That's pain.
I must be the only person who didn't enjoy Inception...
Why does the Star Trek (2009) movie have a light flair thing effect on screen every 5 seconds?
The Room. Pretty odd film, and Lisa's rather ugly.
I watched Revenge of the Nerds and The Wrestler for the first time.
the main character is a wimp

I saw The Last Airbender... Sweet Mother of God, it was crap.
Nothing made sense, the main character is a wimp, the plot sometimes just skips around the place and there's just a couple of stuff that's flat out weird.

One of the greatest action cartoon films ever made. Or maybe that's just the Turtles fan in me.
It's called Turtles Forever for those interested.
There's one point where Thor is randonmly walking around town, puzzled about this new world he's in and he walks into a pet store asking for a horse and when the puzzled clerk tells that he only has smaller animals, Thor retorts that he want one big enough to ride. A lot of people in the theatre laughed, but to me it felt like a Spiderman 3 moment.
Another Spiderman 3 moment is when Thor's hammer gets lodged in a rock and one truck driver decides to pull it out. Doesn't work... what does he do? Invite every hillbilly in the US to try and pull this hammer from the stone.
I watched Fast and Furious the other day, and was pretty impressed. The whole thing came across as the sequel everyone wanted, instead of what they ended up getting in parts 2 and 3.
Last night though, I watched Fast 5 in the theater, and was blown away. It's full of nods to the previous movies, but surpasses all the movies that came before it in the franchise by a long shot. It embraces the kind of over the top machismo-oozing that put me in mind of the first Predator movie. It also knows when not to take itself too seriously, and has a good chunk of laughs/ridiculous moments. I'd rank it up there as one of the best American-action movies I've ever seen.
Highly reccomended.
Also: The Rock is ridiculously badass, and delivers some equally ridiculous lines. Hoolarious.
I loved 5 Fast 5 Furious, also loved it, but probably for different reasons. I've seen pretty much every F&F film with the same group of friends, and we always find them so ridiculous and silly that we can't help but enjoy every minute of it.
We especially liked the way that Vin Diesel can use Nitrous to somehow increase the traction of his tyres! Also, did you notice that The Rock was sweating profusely in every scene he was in?
Bridesmaids.
Awesome stuff.
My only complaint, is that it could have used more Maya Rudolph.
Oh really? I thought it sounded like some Chick Flick and never actually bothered to even look into it, but there is an offer at work to see the movie and go out for free drinks afterwards. I might take them up on it if the movie is decent. It's directed by Paul Feig (the creator of Freaks and Geeks). He's also directed a ton of episodes of The Office, and Arrested Development.
Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides. I kinda liked it.
Saw Bridesmaids (don't hate). Funny movie, I enjoyed it! Men better not avoid it just because they think it's a chick flick. Well, it has bits of chick flick to it, but overall it's a comedy for all to enjoy (even animals!).
Also, Mermaides...
Why Mistique? She's basically Anna Paquinn's character from the original 3 films
Got around to seeing Cars 2. Wasn't interested when it hit theaters, despite being a big Pixar fan. It's actually not bad, I quite liked it. Great action scenes. It's a lot better than the first Cars. The visuals are great, and Mater's idiocy is actually a key point of the end of the movie. I liked the bit where he looks at himself acting like an idiot and realizes how much of a fuck up he is. Of course, they didn't use the term "fuck up" in a Disney movie, but they implied it. I'd probably rewatch this over Ratatouille, just because Cars 2 has so much more going for it in terms of visuals. Eh, I'd give it a B-
I'm right there with you on Cars 2. The Italian racecar was a highlight for me.
(http://blogs.whatsontv.co.uk/movietalk/files/2011/12/Sherlock_Holmes_Game_of_Shadows_2.jpg)Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows
I must say I was quite impressed by this film at times! Both Downey and Law have great chemistry as differing characters but good friends and they exchange a lot of banter and wit together well. But what really made the film for me in the end was the man above, Jared Harris as James Moriarty is fantastic and puts in a true villain performance, perhaps a favourite of mine since Ledger as Joker (In the sense that while the Joker was a mad man running loose, Moriarty is a calm but infinately more calculated individual) Really enjoyed the music accompanying the film and some of the action scenes were brilliant.
Still, I did dislike certain things. One things that managed to make it through in the first film was Sherlock's incredible power of deduction, unfortunately that was not the case here and it seems more like an action adventure film than a detective film. A major shame especially as I'm a big Holmes fan, but something I expected (Thankfully the BBC series Sherlock is launching soon!) Also Ritchie's love for SUPER SLOW-MO and CAMERA ANGLE ALL OVER THE PLACE can get tiring at times.
Overall though a very enjoyable film, especially the last 30 minutes or so, I thought the film was coming near its climax but it just kept giving.
The final battle in the film, my gosh it was fantastic! Recommended viewing.

The Darkest Hour
Hey, look at what we have here. The first major contender for worst movie of 2012 and we're barely past week 3.
I saw this today and wow... Probably the laziest, non-scary alien invasion movie with special effects that make the Sci-Fi channel look good.
This is a hard one to decide. Part of me loves the nostalgia and the great jokes and the musical bits. But there's another part of me that feels like this was mostly Jason Segel and Amy Adams guest-starring The Muppets for a good chunck of the film.
Really hard to say...
Saw The Phantom Menace 3D. I liked the move a lot when it released in '99, and over the years I didn't let the haters get to me. Yes, it has it's problems, but I think the greats totally outweigh the weaknesses. The podrace and the lightsaber duel are awesome movie moments.Nice, I might give the film a see. The only thing that bothers me in the Phantom Menace is how boring the characters seem. But I liked the visual effects, it was insane in 1999 standards.
The improvements to the movie include a digital Yoda and an extended podrace, and both REALLY help the film.
The 3D was well implemented. Not in your face, but not invisible. The effect created a cool window into the Star Wars universe.
(http://i44.tinypic.com/n6famw.jpg)Thanks for the impressions. I'm hoping to check it out tomorrow night :).
I'm shocked to find out that John Carter is actually a pretty good movie! Seriously, if nothing, it'll distract you from life's less pleasant moments for a couple of hours.
I liked everything about the story and the mythology, without feeling overwhelmed. It's got some great set-pieces, the music's awesome and John Carter himself is a pretty cool character.
Give it a try, seriously.
I can sum up the movie in one sentence: It feels like a TV mini-series.
OK, dude. I owe you that much. Let's just say that The Avengers is a very good movie, a very good attempt at making the very first superhero team-up. It's a very good movie, and it's way up there. It just needed a little something to edge it to excellent.
Now, my issues with the movie.
After the huge build-up starting with The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2 and the other films, I got the impression that they sort'of phased all that out and the plot to kickstart The Avengers seemingly starts from scratch. Because early on in the movie, it's implied that The Avengers iniative was just cancelled or postponed.
What were all left with is the impression that this takes place much longer after the events of the other films and that Tony Stark and the rest of the crew involved, simply just moved on. Which makes the task for Nick Fury to gather all these heroes seem almost too easy. By the hour mark they are already in the huge aircraft trying to unconver Loki's plan.
Bruce Banner's incentive for joining up with the team is also incredibly easy and most of his backstory just seems to be missing, considering how tragic is it.
There's a bit of dead space in which the team is just bickering with each other, under the clear influence of Loki's staff.
My other gripe with the film, is and always has been, Black Widow and Hawkeye, they are only there because of plot convenience. Because it's not like Loki couldn't get things done if he had mind controlled any other professional archer in the world. This also makes the climactic showdown with the aliens lose a little of their menace.
If Hawkeye and Black Widow can also go toe-to-toe with these monsters, it makes them not seem as dangerous as they should be. Hulk and Captain America can kill them by simply using blunt force, so can Thor and Iron Man. It's their numbers that are the only decisive factor.
The other "downside" would be Nick Fury, so much talking, not much else, I'm afraid. The CG also dipped in quality from time to time.
But setting those issues aside, everything else from The Avengers is just pure gold.
The character interactions, how Thor and Hulk get on each others nerves. What happened with Agent Coulson was the dramatic turning point. How Captain America is really a great de-facto team leader. The way Loki takes joy in outsmarting his brother. Some of the gags are real gut busters. And of course, the climactic showdown. The mid-credits reveal in which the major villain is... dum... dum.. dum...(***dramatic pause***) THANOS!
I wonder if they'd use Dormammu in the first Dr. Strange movie.
Please don't listen to Aki-at's opinion on comic books. :)
Avengers is not the second best comic book movie ever made. Especially with such big flicks like 300, Sin City, Watchmen etc. Avengers was good and entertaining, but wasn't a masterpiece. I think it is you sir, that can't handle the truth.
You rate Watchmen above Avengers? 300 above Avengers? Really?
Well, you have bad taste because Avengers was entertaining but wasn't a classic film. There was too much mistakes for it to be even on my top 5 favorite comic book films. First of all, the movie takes Loki, a villain that was was beat by Thor alone as the main villain. Why? Maybe Avengers 2 will deliver a 'OMFG' villain, but this one didn't.
Also felt like most of the film was establishing what they established in the tie-ins. Gathering the super heroes took 40 mins, why did they choose this? I have no idea. They already established that they contacted these heroes, we didn't need them to explain it in the flick. We knew it happen, so I was confused that they had to do it again...
Should I go on?
Batman is better than this films.Superman Returns suffers from trying to please old Superman movie fans. I'm looking forward to the reboot even if the custom looks gay. Though Watchmen is the best comic book movie ever. Hands down. Sincity is a close second. They are too good to the source materiel to be disregarded.
As a big time comic book nerd, I felt that it was awesome seeing a comic book movie like Avengers really tapping into the potential of what a comic book movie can be. This is really the first time anything like it has ever been attempted combining a bunch of characters and showing them in a shared universe. It's really quite an achievement that they got so much right on the first try.I'm excited for the second one, I liked the film. Just not a top favorite. I know Watchmen is hard to compare to Avengers or Sin City to Spider-Man, but in the end when someone is talking about favorite comic movies you have to stack them up in your personal taste. My personal taste lies with more mature story lines. Personal stack list here.
I do agree that Loki might be a somewhat weak choice as a villian but at the same time, the script was written in such a way to show his strengths being able to manipulate the heroes. I won't spoil it here, but the lead in to the sequel promises an epic villian and I personally can't wait.
As far as comparing this to something like Watchmen, there's really no comparision, they're both two very distinctly different films doing their own things. They're not really similar at all.
Its from the director of The Good, The Bad, and the Weird (good Korean take on a western). Here is the trailer, if you like revenge flicks, watch it:
I got to see The Dark Knight Rises last night (won't say a thing, other than that I enjoyed it).
This morning, my local theater had a showing of the Ninja Turtles movie from 1990. Needless to say, I was there, and it was awesome :).
@Barry: They're doing it at all Cineplex theaters in Canada.
It's a summer promotion where every Saturday morning, they're playing a different family movie. The best part is that the admission's only $2.50 :D.
I got to see The Dark Knight Rises last night (won't say a thing, other than that I enjoyed it).
I saw it on friday night and found it to be really, really disappointing. When should we open this up for discussion?Maybe a separate, spoiler marked thread?
This series is my Star Wars.
Could anyone let me know about the film "Dredd" before I decide whether to go or not?
I'd like someone to give me their thoughts about it as I am curious about the Universe of Dredd.
Thanks in advance.
Actually going to see it myself tomorrow. Though no expert on the universe of Dredd but heard good things.
@Barry
What made The Amazing Spiderman such an uneven product is that this movie was made pretty much by Sony Picture's focus group, Marc Webb is probably a very talented director, but right now, in Hollywood terms he is still a nobody, therefore Sony Pictures can boss him around. I say focus group, because cleary they wanted to mimic The Dark Knight, but somehow try to be everything to please everybody (Twilight fans, for one).
The blu-ray is said to have a feature which reveals all the cameos, and they might discuss a bit of behind the scenes of how they obtained the rights to certain characters and why they chose them.Good. It'll be interesting to see how it was done especially in regards to Sega. I mean one can understand wanting Sonic involved but ALTERED BEAST and HOTD? That must have been requested specifically. On another note does anyone know in XMEN LAST STAND when they are trying to get to the boy who can cure mutants that the game system he was playing, was it a dreamcast or 360? I' cant make it out, i ask because on the screen it looked like he was playing ECCO DEFENDER OF THE FUTURE.
Checked, it's a 360, you can see the controller briefly:
