And is not a Yakuza series game...
is entitled BINARY DOMAIN
Sega's Yakuza team is working on an all new multiplatform PS3/X360 title that promises to appeal to gamers throughout the world. Titled "Binary Domain," the game has a sci-fi robot theme with a focus on online competitive play and high level enemy AI.
More details at Andriasang page:http://http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/11/29/probably_fake_flying_get/.
-
If this is indeed real, then I will commend the Yakuza Team for, if you'll pardon the term, broadening their horizons.
-
It's about time they tried something different.
-
Lamers, I already posted it on the front page. I rock.... i should get a prize.

The game will deal with some heavy themes, including "life" itself. The game will make players consider what exactly is life.
The area of setting was actually a point of contention. Early in development, there was debate with Sega's overseas staff about setting the game in Japan or overseas. The overseas staff felt that if the game is targeting international audiences, it should be set outside of Japan.
In the end, they went with Japan because they're aiming for a deep human drama and Nagoshi feels for someone who was born and raised in Japan it is easier to make drama if the setting is Japan. He also feels that there's no meaning in having a Japanese staff make a game if you make the settings and performances all overseas oriented.
Binary Domain's voice work will all be done by overseas actors, but the event scene cuts and image work will all be done by Japanese staff. Because of this, Nagoshi feels that the game will merge Japanese and overseas sense in one.
Nagoshi would share little about gameplay. He does seem to be excited about the AI, promising enemy robot AI to be at a previously unseen level. The development staff has been doing continuous research to make the enemy AI the at the highest level in the world, and Nagoshi believes they'll be able to offer some interesting gameplay as a result.
Online is a big focus. Nagoshi wouldn't share details on this area, but said that players will feel connections with their fellow players.
That's right, Nagoshi. Show those generic western developers who is boss!
-
It is interesting, if he didn't already make a game in the 'city'. I wish he picked other parts of Japan that most people have never seen. Its a beautiful place.
-
That's right, Nagoshi. Show those generic western developers who is boss!
Yeah by making a 3rd Person shooterm like the westerners never done that before lol.
Anyway at last we see 'what its like to be Human' show its self and now its multi platform ?- At last SEGA Japan starting to wake up. Here's hoping Kikuchi-san shows what talent his team has for a Wordwide game
-
Nagoshi makes a game about bald space marines?!
This is good news, but even with how much I love the Yakuza series I am not convinced until I see what it really is.
Really happy to finally see Nagoshi's "Western" game, I was worried OF THE END was it.
-
Bald monks, get it right!
-
I actually hope the main character is a monk or preast or something... Would be pretty awesome.
-

personally and after playing RGG4 and how awesome it turned out to be.
i think Nagoshi and his team will always rely on multi lead characters from now on ..
not to mention his comment regarding the online experience saying that players will feel connections with their fellow players. (i don't know what did he mean exactly but i think he is talking about the co-op mode)
-
I just had the best dream ever where this was actually a remake of Snatcher but played like Yakuza.
HOLY SHIT, BEST GAME EVER. IT BETTER BE LIKE THAT!
-
I don't think SEGA owns Snatcher, do they? @_@
-
Uhm... Are my eyes lying to me or am I seeing a naked teenage girl somewhere in this thread :| ?
-
I thought I already posted this but apparently I didn't.
Apparently Vanquish's failure wasn't enough to give the space theme a rest.
Now we have Nagoshi inspired by (read ripping off) Head Hunter: Redemption which was inspired by Demolition Man.
-
Well, guys the unveiling is tomorrow in Japan at 5pm.
So that makes it:
8 a.m. for Portugal/England
About 7pm for Australia
Aaand about 3 a.m. for US NYC time frame zone.
Very curious about it. It's likely one of the first major titles that were mentioned early on.

that game was ... i mean the whole series was terrible
-
Oh yeah, can't wait for the big reveal! Fingers crossed it turns out awesome.
One thing though, does this mean the team is working on Yakuza of the End, Yakuza 5 AND this new game?
-
I'm pretty sure they arent actually MAKING Yakuza 5 right now... Although I think they ARE developing the Monkey Ball for the 3DS.
-
I just watched the teaser trailer. Looks like shit if I'm to be brutally honest.
It just screams of 'Japanese game trying too hard to be Western'. Vanquish almost fell into that trap too, but this looks even worse. The only interesting bit of the trailer was the very end.
Still, it might play really awesomely, but I don't think there was one thing I really liked about that trailer at all.
-
Oh, well...
But I liked the trailer, so screw them...
And Kotaku... you fail at humor.

Isn't it a bit early for all that?
But I agree that the trailer wasn't exactly selling me, for a game promoting a strong story and very good enemy AI they didn't show either of those things in the trailer.
That said I like the idea for the world... The story bit at the end looked like it could be cool. I even liked the enemy robot designs, mainly the large boss was quite a unique design.
The thing I REALLY didn't like was the 3 main characters... They are generic as fuck and look bug eyed and stupid... I liked it more when we thought one of them was a Monk... Where did the Monk go!?
-
I guess we found a new topic for this weeks round table.
-
The design of the three main characters is surprising, considering the teams work on the Yakuza series and Monkey Ball series, I'd never expect to see them produce something so generic.
I'm not sure why they decided to show a cutscene with 80's action films dialogue, gave the worst first impressions for most people I feel. That being said, the final 20 seconds shows the world I'd rather play in, alas I do not think it'll be the case.
So far, very moot trailer.
-
The LAST 20 seconds showed the world I want to play in.
I think the game would have had a 100 times better reception if the characters didnt look so generic...
Although it is no worse then what the West has been doing for years with characters like Nathan Drake, Master Cheif, Modern Warfare cast, Sam Fisher etc...
-
Some art for the game. Thanks to our Suzuki Yu!

The last two, I really like. It's a shame the trailer just does not showcase them much and comes off as terribly generic. I think they should have just made a reel of the game instead of just showing us one cutscene with the twist. Shame really. missed chance. Hope those three at the main characters though, they look really bad...
-
I have no doubt that the game will be great, and I'm still smiling about it being multiplatform, but I agree that the trailer did little to excite me. I like the robots and the setting, but the humans were bland. That ending bit was rather crazy though.
-
It's the visuals that bother me the most. This is a cinematic teaser and normally cinematic footages look better than ingame visuals. Here the visuals look really dated even in the cinamtic cutscenes.
I am seeing negative feedback everywhere allready. Also I agree with sharky in the comment sections, the characters look generic. I like the main character, the woman needs some polishing here and there and that black dude is just a stereotype BA sorta character.
This is not a good start tbh. As a 1st teaser trailer it's not exactly giving people the right 1st impression.
Story wise, I think this game is going to do something far more interesting than any fps or 3rd ps.
-
Well, as far generic western characters go, they don't seem to stray much away from the generic characters in most actual Western shooters anyway. So at least there's an opporunity to poke fun at them for kicks.
And yeah, the first thing when I saw the graphics I went: wait a minute, this is the Yakuza engine so I thought it was going to be a PS3 exclusive again, but after the credits...
At least, I'll be getting some much needed Nagoshi love on my 360.
-
People are going to knock because its looks nothing more than a GOW rip off using the Yakuza engine and set in Toyko. Its a poor trailer , though the game looks like can be fun and interesting. It needs to have some serious tech behind it , if its not to become a Quantum Theory style disaster.
At least the game is new, being made for a Worldwide audience and multi-platform, That a start, Shame its 5 years in to the consoles life cycle
-
Too bad you didn't even know the game existed until now, so much for your "visionary" credibility.
As far as i'm concerned the only FPS /squad based game i wanna play is ALIENS CM but it seems everything but that is getting released ahead of it.
Oh well back to VANQUISH.
-
Oh I think I knew 'what it was the be Human' quite a long time ago.
-
Oh I think I knew 'what it was the be Human' quite a long time ago.
Like you knew about Val before Storm? How sad you've become.
-
actually no one can judge the quality of the game from this video. (or cut-scene)
the two highlighted features of the game based on Nagoshi's Interview are the Drama and the gameplay , praising the AI System to be innovative and top level.
this video doesn't show any of these points.
but yeah while the game engine is quite nice and personally i like the Robots designs , the human characters are awfully generic alongside bad dialog and voice acting, and the whole fight cut-scene was bad, i don't know why they made this video in the first place! it doesn't give the impression they wanted!
-
I wish the writing was purposely over the top, this just seems like what Mang said by another Japanese developer trying waaaaay too hard to make something seem like it was not made in Japan and failing really bad at it.
I am nowhere near excited right now, but I still have a lot of faith in the developer to make a really great game. Yakuza did not really appeal to me at first either, now it is one of my favorite series SEGA ever made...
-
Oh I think I knew 'what it was the be Human' quite a long time ago.
Like you knew about Val before Storm? How sad you've become.
Oh give it a rest . Val talk started back in 2006 When it was then classed as SEGA surprise game, I'm sure you remember it, you even PM me on asking for info on it... where I Seem to remember a person called Goonboy Republic expressing views on the news on a gaming forum Long before SEGA Bits or SEGA nerds were ever started so please spare the me Storm load of tosh.
And the 'visionary' game was to be made By Ueda-san, sadly put on the back burner to cut costs, Not the 3rd person shooter from Nagoshi about 'what it's like to be Human'
Now I rather talk about the game
-
Although it is no worse then what the West has been doing for years with characters like Nathan Drake, Master Cheif, Modern Warfare cast, Sam Fisher etc...
Well I can't comment on Nathan Drake since i haven't played the games, the Modern Warfare cast is purposely meant to be 'regular soldiers', so they aren't really meant to be unique or outstanding. As for Master Chief, and Sam Fisher though, I don't think they are really bad characters at all.
Sam Fisher in particular I think is a great character, he has an immediately recognisable and unique look thanks to his night vision goggles (Even his movements in game are really stylised and recognisable) and he actually has a really great dry and dark sense of humour throughout the series. I know you haven't played the games, so I can see why first impressions would lead you to think otherwise, but he's really quite an excellent character, one of my favourties from the last two generations of games.
Aaaaanyway, my Splinter Cell defence force notwithstanding, I don't mean to say the GAME will be bad, but I thought the trailer was horrible is all. As you and Aki-at said, the last bit was by far the best, it's a shame it was preceded by really dull set pieces that we've all seen before and really bad dialogue.
While we will all be following the game because we know who is making it and have faith the gameplay might be good, I get the feeling 90% of people will be turned off this immediately and ignore it.
-
I think the best thing they have going for it is that it is multi-lingual, people from different geographical locations will speak there native language with there own people and foreign language with foreigners.
I communicate in English at this forum, at Home I speak Hindko, at university I speak Urdu, and at the Clinic I speak whatever native language the Client/Patient wishes to communicate in. I would like games to do that and I think this one will I just hope they don't rush it and take their time with it.
-
Although it is no worse then what the West has been doing for years with characters like Nathan Drake, Master Cheif, Modern Warfare cast, Sam Fisher etc...
Nathan Drake is one of the best characters ever created for a Videogame, in fact the whole cast to the series is perfectly realised and voiced. Mass Effect and the likes of Heavy Rain , Half Life , God Of War (the 1st game) all have brilliant realised characters and voices , then again so does Yakuza, Panzer Dragoon ECT
The game isn't going up against any of them, but Gear of War, Vanquished . So the Game engine Tech, AI and the action really need to be best SOJ can produce ,or its going to get killed
I like the look of the robot and the bosses, and quite like the setting . Ok its borrows from films like I-Robot or even games likes Project Eden but SEGA always borrowed from films and other games .
As long as the blend is good, the tech and AI the best SEGA can do, and the action no stop it could be a winner
-
Yo F-D_M, I changed the topic title to BINARY DOMAIN Discussion. Now it is the official topic of the game, and easier for people to find on the forum list. :)
Gotta say, I'm warming to the game. I like the A.I. (the Steven Spielberg film) feel of the robots, especially the presumably android woman at the end of the trailer. Or maybe she has prosthetic robot legs?
-
Yeah, Sharky don't know why you are saying its like "Nathan Drake" you should actually play the games before insulting a series.
-
Gotta say, I'm warming to the game. I like the A.I. (the Steven Spielberg film) feel of the robots, especially the presumably android woman at the end of the trailer. Or maybe she has prosthetic robot legs?
Yeah that's what went through my head, but prosthetics apparently exceeded her waist, and I was like this is too much.
-
Yeah, Sharky don't know why you are saying its like "Nathan Drake" you should actually play the games before insulting a series.
But I'm not talking about the character as in personality... or what ever.
I'm talking about the way he looks... his face and clothes. It's just another '30-something white male'.
Oh and Mademan I was talking about Sam Fisher in the latest one with out his traditional suit. (He might get it later on but I didn't play it long enough to find out.)
-
You mean, the 'brown hair, white male' that about 80% of the Western population looks like?
I think its done this way because most people want to picture themselves as the roll or most designers look like that. I know Nathan Drake sort of looks like his voice actor.
The character that looks alike like their 'Uncharted Character' is Elena
(http://http://www.ps3informer.com/playstation-3/2009/09/23/00%20Elena%20Fisher%20as%20Emily%20Rose.jpg)
It is like saying "Why does Ryo, Akira, Kazuma and Segata have the same hair, SEGA IS NOT ORGINAL" Just what Asian people look like.
-
If you are talking purely about appearances, then it's a bit unfair to judge games set in the real world for having characters that look like normal people. If Nathan Drake and Sam Fisher are 'generic' then as George said, so are Ryo Hazuka, Akira Yuki and Kazuma Kiryu.
The problem with the trailer wasn't so much the character's appearances as their general behaviour/dialogue and the set pieces/setting they were in which came off as really bland or 'try hard' to me.
As I said though, I'm willing to give it a chacne since the gameplay might shine through.
-
Half of the internet is blowing up about how 'generic white guy' and cliche they are. All I'm getting at is that there is a double standard where the Western developers can do it with out people making a fuss but if a Japanese company makes a game with a 'generic 30 something white guy' its a massive crime against videogames.
As for Akira, Ryo, Kazuma... Yes they ARE the generic aisen look (at least in videogames) but had a western company made a game with the main character looks like Kauzma I doubt they would get any flack.
But I'm not disagreeing that the most offputting and boring thing about the look of the gvame right now is the cliched, american style characters. Even more so when it comes from Nagoshi.
-
If the trailer started off with something other than cheesy lines and actually showed the 'dramatic human story' and 'advance AI', also some 'teamwork' it would have been accepted better.
The trailer showed the opposite, no teamwork, people fighting and grenades being thrown off almost killing a big black man.
-
Pretty much what George said. They could have had the exact same characters, but if they were presented in a different way they wouldn't be percieved as so generic/dull/silly.
It's not really to do with 'East vs West' so much as it's just a crappy trailer. There are plenty of trailers with 'plain looking white guys' yes, but the good ones have some good personality behind the characters or at least some kind of back-story and fleshing out. This trailer didn't even have particularly interesting action in it.
-
I don't know about 'Team Work', I would've been amused at their internal conflicts had the conflicts not been executed so poorly.
-
Oh I think I knew 'what it was the be Human' quite a long time ago.

No you give it a rest. A) I PM you to say merry crimbo to you(which i fully regret now) and to Sharkey and a few others. That's it.Anything else is fradulant.
B) saying "Sega's got a new game with great graphics" doesn't cut it. Any real good sega japan game could fit that description. Difference with me and any other person who talk about future games is they give you a stronger clue of its identity or name the game which I've done on a few occassions which turns to be correct.
Notgive out flimsy clues that no one will figure if its the game you claim to have predicted. And C) I said this game was a franchise getting a sequel which you vehemently denied which some around here witnessed it. Turned out to be correct didn't I but then anyone who knew about this game beforehand KNEW exactly that the PS3 one was first of a series. Not suprising that you did not. So stop spinning or that change the post tactic to make out you predicted it before a certain memeber here.
Because you not only did not predict it first but you didn't even know what the plans were and that was AFTER the gsame's release. Like i said anyone who knew the game's exisistence beforehand knew what type of project it was.
And finally Yes, I'd like to talk about the game which you didn't even know about until now. But talking about things on topic is a new thing for you since you like ti derail entire topics to something about you.
-
No you give it a rest. A) I PM you to say merry crimbo to you(which i fully regret now) and to Sharkey and a few others.
The PM's you sent me on both the Will of the ancients or Gamers republic was nothing to do with Merry Christmas , but asking for info on this BIG game , The PM are still on the servers
I'll not post them because they're Private Messages. But people can be sure I speaking the GOD's honest truth, some on here were also members of Gamers Republic and remember the threads
Sega's got a new game with great graphics
The threads of still there , it was clear it was not just any game, Hence no-one else is doing this stuff, which in terms of the Canvas tech and the pencil shading look, no-one was or has .
Difference with me and any other person who talk about future games is they give you a stronger clue of its identity or name the game which I've done on a few occassions which turns to be correct.
One will always need to be vague. the difference is you like to shoot your mouth off and make stuff up . Like how it was Rubbish Yu Suzuki was semi retired at SEGA and not working on 1 game, not 2 games, not 3 games but several games.
Now who was more telling the truth of the matter with regards to Yu Suzuki , who was telling the truth with Nagoshi wonder game, and of that's not enough how said Sonic Team would surprise many with some decent games, and are a team on the Up a couple of years ago on this board
Now I done with your bullshit and spin and lies . Say what ever you want . I couldn't give a toss anymore. I'm done with you
-
The PM's you sent me on both the Will of the ancients or Gamers republic was nothing to do with Merry Christmas , but asking for info on this BIG game , The PM are still on the servers
I did send you a christmas message and i've never PMd you at WOTA. But again it still doesn't change te fact that you said there was no sequel whenit would have been known to anyone who knew about the project in the time you supposedly did. It doesn't compute mate. It doesn't compute because you never knew about the game or about its behind the scenes.
I'll not post them because they're Private Messages. But people can be sure I speaking the GOD's honest truth, some on here were also members of Gamers Republic and remember the threads
TA you've never uttered the truth in your life when it comes to things like these. The fact you tried to accuse me of something I never said about a previous debate when another poster said i didn't is one than just more occassions that you don't tell the truth.
Sega's got a new game with great graphics
The threads of still there , it was clear it was not just any game, Hence no-one else is doing this stuff, which in terms of the Canvas tech and the pencil shading look, no-one was or has .
No it wasn't it was just you saying another game is coming. No specifications. Like i said people kniow me on the things i said and at least 80 percent of stuff i say do happen.
You mean if they want to pass off that they know what they talking about.
He wasn't though was he. And several can mean more than two. I never placed a number. You were the one who said he was doing seven games. So don't make things up.
Now who was more telling the truth of the matter with regards to Yu Suzuki , who was telling the truth with Nagoshi wonder game, and of that's not enough how said Sonic Team would surprise many with some decent games, and are a team on the Up a couple of years ago on this board
It wasn't you. Who was the one said that VT can never be done on the Wii, or that SAMBA was never coming to the Wii or countless others i forget to mention? You.
Now I done with your bullshit and spin and lies . Say what ever you want . I couldn't give a toss anymore. I'm done with you
Awwww, Polly, wanna cracker? I was done with you ages ago.
-
Keep this short and it really will be the last
I did send you a christmas message and i've never PMd you at WOTA
Sadly the PM I had off 'Goonboy Panzer ' (take it that's you  ) onthe Will of the Ancients was after Christmas and asking for info on a BIG game. So you did send me a PM on that site . Relax though... I'll not post PM.
No it wasn't it was just you saying another game is comin
The thread is still there, ok and its long before Sega Nerds or Bits came into being , so cut the Storm rubbish.
And several can mean more than two
I know that's why I said not 1, not 2, not 3 but more .
Now you're really going to sit there and tell the people of this board that 1 Yu Suzuki is still a major Team head inside SEGA and that he's working on over 4 projects for SEGA Japan . Spare me
It wasn't you. Who was the one said that VT can never be done on the Wii, or that SAMBA was never coming to the Wii or countless others i forget to mention
Samba II never did came out, not least on the PSP like the rumours said . VT III did not come out for the wii and its controls did have to be redone for the Wii 2009, So you can keep the comedy coming. Weren't you the man that said VF 5 would never come to the 360 , that SEGA had totally dropped the PSP , some of us said otherwise.
Oh and you can still hold me to the Crucible btw. One day the truth will come out of 'The Box'
Now I've got Robots to kill lol
-
Pfft, you n00bs, I knew about this game back when it was meant to be a Mega-Drive Launch title.
-
Mademan, stfu!!! I knew this "game" before sg1000 even existed
-
All of your opinions matter not, as I can claim myself to be the Quarter Master who designed Fonz for the arcades - Therefor my superiority over you all is just.
-
OK, this thread is about Binary Domain. Not about who knows everything 3 seconds faster than the next guy.
-
Let's cool down, after the first initial impressions, I start to see more level-headed feedback on that debut trailer.
I want to know all the little details:
-Is the PS3 the lead version?
-The team who is working on this game, which were their previous titles?
-How does this shooter fare compared to Mikami's Vanquish?
-
Most likely will be a PS3 lead version. Most likely will be using the Yakuza engine, it seems at least. Its by the Yakuza team. Its going to be a squad based shooter, unlike Vanquish. Will have focus on story, AI and online play.
-
Why would Sega green light a game so similar to Vanquish and so soon?
-
Why would Sega green light a game so similar to Vanquish and so soon?
Is it really THAT similar though? The only thing in common so far is that you kill robots.
-

From the press release it isnt much like Vanquish at all, it has a focus on multiplayer co-op while Vanquish was strictly single player. Has a big focus on 'human drama' like Yakuza where as Vanquish was very light on story.
I would like to know more about the game though... considering the first impressions were pretty poor.
-
After watching the trailer again I am slightly more interested. I am really really hoping this is like Yakuza in that it is basically an RPG that feels like an action game.
I think the robot designs are actually extremely cool and I like how slow they seem. I really miss games with slow enemies, game developers should take note! Fast running enemies are not scary, but creepy soulless robots that march in large groups totally are.
-
the white guy is actually a robot.

That'd be sweet if he was. Like Gigalo Joe:

Joking. Though I'd love for some twists to the trailer, perhaps more than meets the eye?

Why did I suddenly have a flash back to the Harrison Ford film Blade Runner?
-
the white guy is actually a robot.
The black guy is actually a laser printer.
-
Thats nothing, the aisen girl is actually a collarge of Dick Van Dyke dressed as a chimney sweep.
-
I stumbled across the trailer again on UK Resistance, and while reading them bash the game I finally saw what made the black guy attack the white guy.
The stupid white guy threw a gernade in the 2nd floor, even though the black guy said he'll handle it. This in turn put the black guy at risk. So it makes the madness look more rationale.
Though the acting and graphic still sucks.

Great game, very underrated...
He didn't even get the tenth of the deserved success, and paradoxically two of the reasons for the poor sales were the mediocre cover of the game, and the bad (sometimes unmotivated) reputation of SEGA at that time ... too bad, I would have seen well a sequel!

Yeah, doesn't have to be right now but hopefully we could get a sequel at least at it's 10th anniversary on year 2022 later.
