I don't disagree on that, Will, I see all that. I'm just saying that those are not as impressive to me as the jump in polygons has been in past gens. We're getting into nerdy territory now. Not that I'm against that sort of stuff, but I remember showing off the Xbox to people and they got it. I showed off the 360 and PS3 to people and they got it again. But PS4 (and I'd assume next Xbox), it's a lot more nerdy in terms of what has progressed. You have to point out the lighting and particles and textures. Not to say that more casual crowds won't see the fidelity you speak of, but I don't think it is as big a "wow" moment as past gens were.

I'd be interested to see how people would react to a true PS4 demo (not sure which videos were running 100% on PS4 last night, I know Watch Dogs was PC, but I'd guess Killzone was PS4?) followed by the best that PS3 can offer (perhaps an Uncharted 3 demo or The Last Of Us?). Maybe even lie and say both are PS4? I could see them picking out impressive elements from both, and who knows? Maybe some will prefer what they see on PS3 despite PS4 being a huge leap in areas like the ones you mentioned?

Again, I'm not arguing for or against, I'm just noting how the general public might see things and how graphics are getting to the point I mentioned.

if they were watching youtube videos i could see them not being impressed, but i can't see them NOT being impressed when they see things in person.

Sony is doing a live killzone demo on jimmy fallon tonight, will be interesting seeing his reaction to the game since he'll be seeing it in person and probably playing it.

I don't know if you've ever played a high end PC game, i mean you own a mac, but it's really a huge difference when you see this stuff in person. Any average joe will be able to notice the difference without a second look. Go watch the ASR Transformed video i posted in the writers forum to see what I mean.

Uh oh: http://www.destructoid.com/psn-purchases-will-not-carry-over-to-playstation-4-246229.phtml

WHERE IS YOUR SONY GOD NOW WILL???

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQPPbi_kGLI

Jim Sterling made a sensationalist title :P i already knew this. PS4 has a x86 processor, it's not going to be emulating CELL games anytime soon. Yosp isnt saying purchases arent carrying over, hes just saying PS3 games aren't playable on PS4, because well.. they aren't. Sadly. but that's Sony's punishment for using CELL. They will be playable in the future one day, using gaikai streaming.

Microsoft won't be any better off, they are also using x86, 360 Processor was based on CELL. Cause bill gates paid IBM to ripoff Sony's research. So.. Microsoft is sorta screwed too in that regard :P

Quote
Xenon in Xbox 360

The PPE was designed specifically for the Cell processor but during development, Microsoft approached IBM wanting a high performance processor core for its Xbox 360. IBM complied and made the tri-core Xenon processor, based on a slightly modified version of the PPE.[29][30]

there is also a whole book about it if you're curious

AMD has commented on the APU powering PS4, as expected, it's pretty low power compared to something you would find in a high end PC. That means PS4 developers are really optimizing the software to get the crazy high PC performance they are getting out of the hardware.

That means the PS4 won't be super expensive. That means Sony has learned their lesson from the PS3. They are just future proofing the PS4 by putting in 8GB of GDDR5 ram.

I've never owned a Playstation device, despite wanting them, but I can say for certain that my eyes are on Sony this year. I was genuinely impressed with some of their ideas (video recording & download as you play), and all the lovely particle effects.

The jump from PS3 to PS4 is only going to apply to developers who spend the money to reach the new promised heights, which isn't cheap and will unfortunately keep the status quo of, "Oh, you didn't sell 10 million copies of your AAA game? Here's your pink slip..." I love that they had Jonathon Blow show off his game though, so there's clearly hope that smaller teams can thrive as well.

The first thing I'm gonna do when PS4 comes out... is buy a PS3. I can't wait for that price drop.  :P

Consoles are like macs.
Everyone goes HURR DURR LOW SPECS and then they are humiliated by a lower spec'd machine (at least during it's first 1/2 years). Optimization can go a long way.

Yes, Mark Cerny, but he worked on Crash and was with Naughty Dog.

Barry, what about streaming PS3 games? I hate the idea, cuz I  never had good internet but that is an option. PS4 being PS4 only doesn't bother me at all, especially since its just going to make the system more expensive.

luckily you don't have to use the social features they confirmed that in an interview. I'm sure Microsoft won't be giving us a choice :P

If The Last Guardian and Final Fantasy Versus XIII are shown off for PS4, we should be careful about them if Colonial Marines taught us anything. With less emphasis on the outsourcing to different teams, hopefully.

Yeah, but I'm sure The Last Guardian will be quality. I think if anything, the PS3 would have held back their vision. I hope it is, the studio has released 2 great games already.

Team Ico is a in house team, passionate team. Gearbox is a third party that takes money from companies, outsources and uses that money to make their own IPs better. Greed in the end of the day.

Hahahaha. I loved that part of the conference. I was really impressed with what he was saying and i thought that it could have been an interesting take on a game, but then all of a sudden...  that.

Tbh I was really not feeling it. Sony ever since the HD era has been focussing on all these gritty, realistic genres and forgot about fantastical.cartoonish, clean, imagitive games. . I just prefer that more and I really liked that part of sony during the first 2 playstation generations. There should have at least been a balance.

Now we got killzone, infamous, driveclub etc. Knack looked interesting to say the least. Third parties showed some cool stuff like deep down but overall I would have loved like a ratchet & klank, or the last guardian, some nice JRPG. And square enix had a chance to prove itself with the latter, but they had might as well have stayed home

We talk about how the PS4 games were revealed in the latest podcast. I noted how stupid it would be if SEGA games were revealed in the way that the PS4 titles were. "500 years into the future. Mankind has changed. We're exploring new galaxies, mankind is evolving. You... are Ulala. A pink haired space reporter whose only weapon is dancing. This... is Space Channel 5."

Maybe it would get people to actually buy Sega games? :/
