IGN hit with layoffs, 1UP, UGO and GameSpy shutting down
« on: February 21, 2013, 05:09:59 pm »
http://www.polygon.com/2013/2/21/4014196/ign-layoffs-1up-ugo-and-gamespy-shutting-down

IGN has laid off an unspecified number of editorial employees today, Polygon has learned, and plans to shutter sites 1up.com, GameSpy.com and UGO.com.

According to an internal memo from Ziff Davis CEO Vivek Shah, "Our goal is to do fewer things and to do them exceptionally well. In that vein, we want to direct all of our energy and work behind our two flagship brands: IGN and AskMen."

Shah writes that Ziff Davis, which recently acquired the IGN network of websites, will be "winding down" 1UP, UGO and GameSpy. 1UP editor-in-chief Jeremy Parish tweeted, "We won't be killing the site today; I'll post more thoughts later. On 1UP!" UGO editor-in-chief Chris Radtke wrote in a goodbye letter to readers, "UGO is dead." While editorial staffers for some of the IGN-owned shuttered sites have been laid off, sources tell Polygon that some personell will be rolled into IGN.com's editorial team.

The company is also looking for a buyer of IPL, IGN's eSports network. Rather than coordinate and publicize its own IGN Pro League, "IGN's role going forward will be to broadcast and cover a variety of eSports events."

Shah's memo can be read below.

From: Vivek Shah
Date: February 21, 2013
Subject: Staff Announcement

Today, we took some difficult but important actions that will ensure the continued growth and health of IGN and AskMen. Before I go into more details about the changes, you should know that they resulted in the elimination of jobs at IGN. It's always upsetting to say goodbye to colleagues and let's do what we can to help these employees as they seek new opportunities.

It's also important for you to know that we are absolutely confident that we now have the best structure and team to successfully move the company forward and that there are no further planned reductions.

The changes we made today are designed to allow us to Simplify and Focus. Our goal is to do fewer things and to do them exceptionally well. In that vein, we want to direct all of our energy and work behind our two flagship brands: IGN and AskMen. They are both category killers and share a vision of a multi-screen (PCs, tablets, smartphones, TV) and multi-format (text, photos and video) world.

As a result of our decision to focus on our core brands, we are:
· Winding down 1UP.com, UGO.com and GameSpy.com;
· No longer ad repping 3rd party sites such as GameStop.com and FamilyGuy.com;
· Actively engaged with parties interested in acquiring IPL. IGN's role going forward will be to broadcast and cover a variety of eSports events;
· Dividing our ad sales team into two: one focused on IGN and the other focused on AskMen.

On the IGN front, Peer Schneider will continue to oversee all of editorial and product, focusing those resources exclusively on IGN. The foundation of this entire company is its content and we will continue to have the best people in the industry producing it.

Charlie Barrett will oversee the monetization of IGN everywhere in the U.S. - PCs, tablets, smartphones, YouTube, consoles - and now be able to concentrate the sales and ad ops teams' efforts where they can make the most impact.

Frank Puma will assume an exciting new role as executive director of programs and solutions, reporting to Charlie. The sales development, design and creative teams will report to Frank, whose charge is to deliver world-class advertising experiences.

A new head of engineering and technology for IGN will be recruited as quickly as possible. Tech has a monumental role to play in the growth of IGN and will be committed to working hand-in-glove with edit, product and sales.

On the AskMen front, Ric Poupada will continue to oversee all aspects of the AskMen organization and is excited to have a new VP of sales, Paul Chenier, reporting to him. Paul has been a longtime advocate of the AskMen brand and is one of the most talented sales executives in our organization. Having him build a dedicated AskMen ad sales team will do wonders for the business.

Ian Chambers will continue to run International out of the UK for both IGN and AskMen and we're thrilled with the performance of our businesses overseas.

Mike Etheridge will be the VP of finance and operations for IGN and AskMen, working across all of the departments to ensure that we're growing our business, expanding our margins and making metric-based decisions.

Rachelle Igoe will be the head of human resources for IGN and AskMen, ensuring that we continue to nurture, attract and retain the best talent in the industry.

I'm sure that there will be a number of questions in the days and weeks ahead but please know that we will be a better functioning and nimbler organization from this moment forward.

As I said on day one, openness and transparency are important, so please email me at [removed] if you have any questions, thoughts or ideas.

The crappy thing is I actually love 1up.com in their prime. The last 6 months they have hardly posted anything, so it makes sense. Oh well, RIP. Giantbomb to me is like the evolution of 1up. More video content, wikis and stuff.

Bad news because it means less competition in the gaming journalism industry.

That is what happens when the same company owns all the major game networks that do the same shit. I still think there are plenty of game sources, most of them emerging last generation.

I noticed that most Gaming Journalist websites are American...does this effect any EU websites like Eurogamer, (I don't like them...I used to though) and Computer and Video Games (They are sensationalist now).

I think we need more dedicated Journalist websites to be honest. Pocket Gamer exists, but it's not very good in giving out content about what's coming out and we have RetroGamer...which...despite loving their magazines....is just TOO UK PC centric (I don't care about the AMSTRAD, ZX Spectrum or CPC...show SEGA, Nintendo and probably the MSX!) If RetroGamer was more universal I would love it much more, but the UK centric PC gaming bugs me...especially when I am from the UK and have only just heard of the Speccy (5 years now) when most of that competition happened before Nintendo or SEGA became dominant.

I dunno, I guess I never think of sites as UK or US. I just read them because they are English. I have Eurogamer in my feed, sometimes they have good interviews and news others don't pick up. I used to love Andriasang, but that is shut down. Siliconera is pretty cool for Japan type news that most sites don't cover.

This is good. Professional video game "journalists" are the cancer of video games, the scrooge of journalism, and the epitome of narcissism.

I am surprised to learn that Gamespy was still around. I thought they went down like Teamxbox.com which slowly but surely went away.

Video Game related websites were bound to get hit badly. Not much traffic, partially because 2012 was a lackluster year, oversaturation of sequels to known franchises and very little innovation.

All kidding aside, IGN does produce some ocassionally good content, I hope they stay afloat for the time being.

I think the Doritosgate thing also shook the whole industry and made people realize that all the media surrounding gaming is a pants-on-head retarded mock of a farce.

And fucking Shitaku needs to die already. The abundance of shit news about eating penis at japanese restaurants and feminist outcry over not having women soldiers in the Rescue of Private Ryan movie is absurd.

I'm surprise it took this long to bring up something like Daritosgate. I know many 'sorta big' bloggers that get invited to events and all they talk about is how much big companies sell out. I guess when the object is to get money, you sorta have to sell out... :/

I think issues are like, most people that go on video game sites all use ad block plus, when a site is really popular you need a in stream of cash etc.

I don't mind Siliconera but it is pretty much for Weeaboos rather then traditional gamers (when I say this I mean people who DO play Japanese games...but not purely Moe/Loli games).

I do think that a Handheld Dedicated Website needs to be created since I think some Handheld games are better then the console games sometimes. It doesn't get that much love sadly.

its like this.

nowadays we have merchants they are calles in the arab world  :hawamir = parasites

they got this term because :

they go anywhere in the world
america
europe
north afr
south afr

they buy something ridiculous cheap such as
a resort
a land

example

land in tanger called mallabatta
cost 50.000dirham is 5000 euro = in load of hectares
they later on sell it for 500.000 euro
fact is no one buys it. but they just wait years cause they are rich anyway.

what they also do is buy loads of companys for cheap prizes. they fuse them. and the rubbish that is left in the companys are sold for a ridiculous big prize.
and to maintain their fused companys they basically won allready cause there is no challenge from other companys.

the people behind this are n real gamers

they are the parasites searching for money

dont be surprised when u see review quality go low. but there is nothing u can say cause their practically the only ones.
ign and gamespot is known for firing people because they made an honest review. while gamespot and ign does force their co workers to write good review about bad games.

basically imm traditional.
i look at screenshots and thats it. a video is even better.
but to read a review is basically based on opinion. thi si s why i surprisingly love sega games cause some of them got bad judgments and turned to be good. and the other way around as well.

ontopic YES.
ign and gamespot are corrupt in reviews and owned by hawamir as well
