Since I plan to see the new Fright Night this week, I watched the 1985 version yesterday. I have to say, it's a little different from what I was expecting. Watching it today, the production values are a little underwhelming, but the premise is just so vastly different from all those slasher movies in the mid-80s that's actually quite fun to watch.
There's a couple of scares here and there, the makeup on the vampires is so gruesome to the point of almost being unintentionally funny. Some characters are simply excellent, namely Peter Vincent (played by Roddy McDowell), who feels like a parody of Vincent Price.
Part of what makes the comedy work, is how sometimes the movie feels self-aware just enough not to take itself so seriously.
Namely the main villain, Jerry, who even if he acts like a genuine menace, he's got a level of swagger and confidence but strangely enough, he still has a somewhat human quality to him (namely a scene involving him and one of the hero's best friends, it's weird because it feels exactly like a scene from Interview with a Vampire).
I'll watch the remake once I get a chance.
