Yeah they used to but  FM Towns and Sharp X6800 didn't have 120 million active users like Steam does. I like PC because I don't have to deal with a aging box that gets bad support. I think its sad that Playstation 4 is BARELY after two years of being out, is getting 'pause/resume' download feature.

The thing is, there really isn't much different between consoles now and PCs... outside of consoles being very limited in what they do. PC has better priced games, better hardware, more free content and more users on the service.

I think one of the issues that 'new generation' of consoles always fail at is 'finding an audience' right away. For example: You get 50 million people to buy a PS3, lets say 30 million are active gamers. Now you release a Playstation 4 and start again at zero.

While Steam has been increasing its userbase by 50% each year and doesn't have to do this. All your older games work on your new rig. Shit, I'm running an really old card on my computer and have had no issue running newer games yet (GTX 560).

Personally think this stuff is making consoles less and less appealing to the hardcore gamer. Not to mention PC now has massive online competitive experiences that aren't on console and are way bigger than Call of Duty ever was.

And how many of those 120 million users have the PC set up to play the latest games ?. Out of those 120 million users how many buy the latest PC games ?.Looking over the point I was making even in Japan decades ago there were better PC ports to the console version to the users with the money to buy the likes of Sharp . Active users is one thing, but the latest full price PC games is quite another

Its a rather silly point . The PS3 had 7 years of life now its time for the users to upgrade and seeing as SONY is going to hit 20 million PS4 soon, Its going to have little trouble outselling the PS3 in the PS4 life time, the main gamesrs are ready to move on and now the PS3/360 is a great toy to buy for your kids  . You still using the same PC Spec you had 7 years ago I very much doubt it  , eveyone needs to upgrade at one point  be you a PC, Console, Mobile, Tablet gamer.

No they don't at all. Lots of my games like the original Half Life, same goes for the Blood II The chosen , GTA II  and so on and even changing my Gfx card as meant that Crysis 3 won't load at all . Even on PC lots of games need to be updates or get a  re-relased  so users can play them on their latest PC systems

PC's have alwasy had that for decades . Console are still the lots of people play the games and if one looks at the stats for COD ECT - then its more offten than not on-line with the consoles and hence why MS and SONY are making millions off the back of their online subs alone and when the big developers still want a piece of the pie .

I have both an Xbox One and a Wii U. Definitely loving my Xbox One thus far, i still think it has the best exclusives on a Next Gen Platform(sorry Wii U).

It's not just about the games on the Xbox for me. The convenience of the Kinect voice features is amazing. I was never a huge fan of Kinect, but it's super handy when my daughter loses my damn TV Remote. Saying "play" "stop" "fast forward" "Watch NHL Network" etc. The OS has been getting a ton of updates since it's release, with full customization on colors, backgrounds, etc.

The Wii U has been okay, not great. I hardly play it, it's actually been unplugged for a few months and for some reason it has a hard time connecting to my Wifi..

... TA. You don't even know what your talking about. I have Half Life and GTA II and they work fine. Shit, they are still being sold on Steam...

http://store.steampowered.com/app/70/ Even has 7,000 new reviews for it. How is it not playable? Why are you just making stuff up to dislike PCs? As for GTA 2 you can download this 17mb patch and it plays fine: http://gtamp.com/gta2/

Again, its a better option than not getting your PSN/Wiiware/XBLA titles on new consoles... and now being forced to pay to play online.

How many people play games on PS4? Can you give me a usage number? I know lots of people with PS3's that only played Blurays. So who cares? All Steam is is a store, while PS3 is multimedia. Hey, that argument goes both ways. 120 million users > maybe 20 million soon. If I was a company I'd rather develop for 100 million more people.

The big thing for me is back in the day until around Xbox/Xbox 360 era, console games and PC games seemed to be completely different worlds.

Consoles exclusively had: Arcade racers, platformers, action games and JRPGs
PC exclusively had: Simulation, RTS, shooters, CRPGs

There was very little crossover, or when there was it didn't work very well. Good luck playing shooters and RTS games on old console controllers, by the same logic getting pads/sticks/steering wheels to work on PC was like a lottery.

Nowadays 90% of the games are released on all systems and PC has every control option available so easily (native 360 controller support for nearly every game for example), and the architecture is so similar that everyone ports their games to everything.

With modern distribution services like Steam and GOG, keeping games updated and patched etc is really simple too.

I just personally feel like PC and Console have become really homogenous to the point where I don't feel the need to buy a new console.
Compare this to the old days and I wanted a Dreamcast to play Sonic, Crazy Taxi, Skies of Arcadia et.al and I wanted a PC to play Half-Life, Age of Empires, Deus Ex, GTA2 etc. Neither could really provide what the other was giving.

I think you find I do . My original copies for Half Life and Opposing Force, Blue Shift  do not work on my new PC , but work on my old Media PC . To play Half Life on my PC I had to download the Steam version and I can forget about playing any of my windows 95 and dos games  That the trouble with PC's

they are still being sold on Steam

Do you know what you're talking about ? . I still have the original CD-Rom version of the 7th guest and the likes of Duke Nukem 3D and its add on packs and that doesn't even work on my old Media PC, never mind my new rig  . They may be up on Steam, but that's no good to anyone with a modern PC and the old copy of the game . So to the likes play 7th guest one needs to download the new version that will work with the latest windows and PC set up

Millions

Silly I know lots of people with a PC and use it for nothing more than work, internet and to check their emails - who cares

Only works if you know those 100 million all have the spec to handle the game doesn't it . What the spec's you need to play Total War II ? . I willing to bet anyone with a PC bought at the same time as the PS3 -would also need to upgrade to play Total War and speaking of Total since its sales are no-where near that of 100 millon is safe to say no all of Steam users buy the same games, same goes for Alien Iso, Footy Manager and host of other Big PC games

GTA 5 alone on the PS4 and XBox One as sold over 10 million copies - Not many full price games even on steam can boast that really.

Nice points and I agree with most looking over the likes of Dues Ex/Half Life  came to the PS2 and GTA II to the DC . The trouble I have is the Japan lack of focus on the consoels and so that's played a big part in those unique
console  and I also do miss the days of custom silicon - where one console could do a effect that was impssible on the other -I also so miss the days of the traditional shooter and 3D shooters that were and still remain my fav genre of gaming

Have you done research to see if they work? It might not work out of the box but it might require a simple patch to run.

Also for the really old games, DOS box will run them.

They got ported to console, but were pretty poor imitations of the real deal.

Even Duke 3D on Saturn, the miracle that it was, was no where near as playable as the PC version with a M+KB Combination, and was missing online play and expansions etc.

Ditto for stuff that went the other way, VF2 came to PC, but good luck getting an arcade stick or pad to work well on PC compared to nowadays.

Yes tried everything  no luck . Crysis 3 well even EA haven't a clue what to say and looking at their boards it seems I'm not the only one who's had issues . Dos Box works with a lot of stuff, but stuff like Jurassic Park Cd-Rom again don't work -

Yes and that's my point as a console gamer was always use to the PC having the Tech edge, more so for 3D games . That's why to me console and PC gamers (the die-hards ones for each platform are different) . Quake III was cut back on the DC not that it matter to me or any one else who had and loved the DC version.

If you have the CD key you can redeem it on Steam and get a downloaded and updated version of Half Life. So, no, while games from 1998 have some issues, they are easily fixed (as you can see) by support from developers. Tell me when I can play Playstation 2, PSN titles on PS4 using my old purchases. You can't.

Tried all that and it didn't work . Also my 3FX version of the original GTA games doesn't work . So sorry even on PC it's far from a perfect world.

3 games that are like few dollars on steam = 'not a perfect world' when PS4 has thousands of titles that came out 5 years ago that don't work.

What would you rather have? I think i'll go with PC. Have fun rebuying PSN games on PS4.
