I'd probably keep Tails and Knuckles, but I'd replace Mighty and Ray. Maybe reintroduce Team Chaotix. I wouldn't introduce brand new characters though, only characters who had started in classic Sonic games.

New zones, badniks and new Hard Boiled Heavies being the exception.

The current Hard Boiled Heavies were already interesting enough for me,
but the more the merrier of course.

This play tester also revealed some Sonic the Hedgehog 2022 gameplay details.
Apparently, the game will not feature multiple playable characters and Wisps, and it will be possible to purchase new special moves from a dedicated shop.
Additionally, locations in the game will feature different types of terrain that will impact speed.
As a whole, the game feels like a mix between Sonic Adventure and Sonic Lost World.

This game is sounding like it's shaping up similar to PSO2:NG. Though no mention of comparison between those games... which might be a good thing? I dunno.

Given the actor’s low voice, fans actually had concerns over Knuckles coming off as ‘sexy’ in the sequel.
While The Suicide Squad actor could not reveal many details about the Sonic 2 movie, he assured fans of one important detail.
He said that Knuckles would not be ‘sexy.’
