The 'if SEGA bought a developer it should be this one' thread
« on: August 08, 2015, 03:05:04 am »
SEGA have made some big purchases in the last decade, some helped them out a lot and some where bad moves. The developer that you think SEGA should look into buying can be either a small, big and they can be from anywhere in the world. I think a company like SEGA should not only build itself in-house teams but always look world wide to acquire talent.

Let the arguments begin.

As we have discussed before, I think the next move SEGA Europe specifically should make is to try and  buy out Games Workshop. Lock down the Warhammer IP's so that GW can't keep running them into the ground by farming it out to literally anyone.

On top of that I think the Warhammer figures could be revolutionized and brought back to relevance with an Amiibo style figure line with chips and chip readers. For example an Arcade machine/digital table top that reads the chips and can randomly generate digital maps and dungeons. (or deign your own) Would be incredible.

Maybe an MMO type company in the west that can properly support larger scale online games. Even the support for mobile games is not that strong, Sega western mobile division is under one roof with Three Rings Design.

I was going to suggest that Psyonix is a decent pick up. Why? Because SEGA has always been missing a component to their games: Online multiplayer. The thing is, the most popular online game they ever release was their PSO series and even that series is considered 'niche' compared to big online titles.

I think their boxed releases has suffered due to now having good online multiplayer component because most of their studios are stretched thin as it is doing a single player campaign. For example: Vanquish. Even Binary Domain's mutliplayer suffered from little thigns that would have been obvious for a Western developer.

Psyonix has recent (last few months) hit it big with almost no advertising, by releasing their game Rocket League. But before that they co-developed Unreal 4 with other studios. Their other big game they have released is Nosgoth, which was suppose to be a multiplayer component to a new 'Soul Reaver' game, but since the single player portion was shit canned by Square-Enix (or before that?) Square decided to release the multiplayer portion as F2P.

Its actually fun, my only issue is grinding for weapons and crafting. But I foudn the gameplay to be really fun. Steam users like it:

Even MGSV is having a different team handle the online portion of their games and having 2 teams work on  two aspects of a game can actually work if communication is done correctly between a Japanese and American team (Kojima LA is doing the online work for MGSV)

Platinum. They need each other. The games made under their partnership can be considered among the best of both groups. Sega should snatch them up.

Treasure. Same reason as above.

I think I can make a list about the possible developers that Sega could bought anytime by region:

-Japan: Tri-Ace, Ark System Works and/or any medium-sized mobile developer.

-West: A MMO Developer from Europe/USA and/or a new/rising mobile one from the EU/USA.

Based on certain records, it's possible that SOJ could buy any or both of this companies to reinforce their CS3 R&D Division which has done a lot of related projects with a certain output of the same kind recently (3D Classics, DFC (Fighting), more Shining and 7th Dragon games -JRPG-for ex.). Also, many key devs like the Virtual-On Director or the VC producers still receive projects in their hands.

I could put Imageepoch but many ex-employees are working in SEGA right now (7th Dragon III is completely a SEGA in-house game).

In the West I choose the most obvious ones because indie devs are more likely to stay independent until further notice. Not the same resolution with a MMO studio with 50+ employees or a mobile one with some degree of sucess like Demiurge (Marvel Puzzle Quest).

Those are my choices.

Platinum is a "different kind of developer" than the last time they worked with SEGA. I will stop right there because I don't like to talk about it...

Codemasters. They make some of the best racing games. I think it would be mutually beneficial, as Codies are having a challenging time in a very saturated racing market, and Sega has such a great history of racing games it would be nice to have them back in the mix in that genre.

Unfortunately, Codemasters was boughted by a Chinese Company after DIRT 3 :/

I think MS should buy em out..

Seriously though, I think Image Epoch is a good one. If the old Quintet studio was still together that would've been cool too.

SEGA should really need to buy anyone now but just get its Japanese In-House studios and pipe lines up to next gen standards. But for argument sake .... I like to see SEGA buy Ninja Theory (a brilliant underrated UK studio) and the Machinegames who make some of the best FPS ever
Panzer Dragoon Zwei is
One of the best 3D shooting games available
Presented for your pleasure

yeah, I would rather Sega was purchased by a competently run company at this point actually.  I don't think them snapping up any more devs will cure their flailing reputation.  Hasn't seemed to so far anyway.
