Will be keeping track of all of Shenmue Gai's updates here. Since I think we all (should) have a vested interest in this game's success, updates are a good indicator, as well as their steadiness and how often they are released. Seems like we get about two a month. In bold is the most recent update. Can we sticky this, please?

So, is the game out yet? If not when?
-
Game's been out on mobile, but we don't have a release date for Yahoo! Mobage Town yet. The list in the original post is all of the in game content that has been added, not to mention the maintenance and stuff they've been doing.
-
This might be the most important* Sega game I know practically nothing about. Not that I didn't know of its existence, of course. I'm just left in the dark with a few things. :|
Supa, perhaps you could explain it to me? Plot, gameplay, pertinent info?
-
More importantly, is there any indication that it is doing well... players etc.
-
No player information yet, supposedly we'll get some information around March...if I hear correctly.
And Essay, do you mean Gai or the Shenmue series in general?
-
Gai. I thought it was called "Shenmue City" or something... :?:
Again, I'm out of the loop on that particular game.
I'm pretty familiar with Shenmue series on its own. Owned and loved the first one. Never played the second, but I followed up on the events.
-
You really should play Shenmue II. Well worth your time.
Shenmue Gai is the official title of the game in Japan, and Shenmue City is a wrong English translation. Suzuki said in an interview that there are plans to move the game to the western markets, and its tentative title was Shenmue World. These plans are not concrete and have not been elaborated on at all.
Shenmue Gai is basically a text adventure game developed by Yu Suzuki's new studio YS Net out now in Japan on mobile platforms, and will soon (no release date yet) be coming to Yahoo!'s Mobage Town service. SunSoft is publishing the game, and SEGA is I guess supervising it, and DeNA, another company, I think is co publishing? Not sure how what their job is in the project.
Gai starts off in the world of Shenmue I, features quests from the original Shenmue I, as well as stories that were cut from the Dreamcast original, for whatever reason. It is also regularly updated with limited events and capsule toys, which is what makes money for the game. In interviews, Yu - san has said that if the game is successful, we will see a continuation into the world of Shenmue II. I'm guessing we won't see that until after the game is released on Mobage Town.
-
Got'cha. Thank you for the explanation--makes a lot more sense now.
Glad to hear it might be coming to western markets; I'm actually surprised that they didn't take that option off the table from the beginning.
(Also happy to see that Sega still has some role in the game's development.)
-
Yup, SEGA capsule toys were recently added in one of the updates, so they at least have a minimal interest in it.
-
believe me, Sega is very interested in this project, they're just not prepared to shell out the cash for it alone which is why the game has all these multiple partners involved. After what happened with SHENMUE ONLINE i don't blame them.
On another note has anyone seen any of the prom art that goes with this game? its good that they are still keeping in the style of the first two cgi model promo/cover art.
-
Yeah, they've done Nozomi up with a Santa hat for Christmas, it looked nice.
-
I haven't seen all of them, supa especially that one. Maybe someone can post the pix here.

Similar info to the article Barry linked, but this also notes that Suzuki himself is writing code for the game. He also seems to be leaning toward "Shenmue Town" as the translated title.

Or Shenmue World: http://www.1up.com/previews/shenmue-world (http://www.1up.com/previews/shenmue-world)
-
I love how he freely talks about the title of the game in interviews, lol, like "Well, it could be Shenmue Land... what do you think? I don't know."
Personally I like "Shenmue City" as it rolls off the tongue. Shenmue World would only be apt if you were able to interact with people all over the world, so if that happens then I'd accept "World".
Town sounds too small and Street sounds too ghetto. "Yo, you wanna play sum Shenmoo Street dawg?!"
-
Updated with more Virtua Fighter capsule toys it looks like. Can we sticky this yet?
-
Sure, why not, I'll sticky it now. :)
-
Awesome, thanks. I'll keep it updated.
-
Updated. March 10th.
-
March 25th update. Apologize again for the delay.

Back with a vengeance. Updates are listed again on the front page, updated with everything since I've been gone (sorry about that). The game is still going strong and continues to be updates regularly.
-
Glad to see it's still progressing.
-
So about the localization?
When do I get it as a FaceBook app?
-
Who knows? I don't think anyone...last we heard they might be working on a smart phone adaptation, but that's it so far.

Wow you're really into this. Good to see the updates. I kind of gave up on it after about a week of playing. It really wasn't my thing although it was nice to play something Shenmue after 10 years of nothing.
I have a feeling an English version will not surface for this.
-
Hmm, well Kiyuu on Shenmue Dojo has posted that Japanese players of Shenmue Gai were informed recently that the game will be ended on December 26. That's too bad. It didn't look like something I'd want to play, but it was cool that there was something new Shenmue-related.
