I was listening to some sonic tunes and since the franchises are so rich of good music, I thought a thread like this would be interesting. The title says it all. Pick two songs from the whole franchise which you like best. I was going for one at first, but than I thought that 2 would give the opurtunity for an old gen and new gen song to be picked. Embedded youtube video would be best. :D
It was really a hard pick for me, untill I came across my sonic cd OST, specifically the japanese one.
Here are mine.
Tidal tempest jap/eur present

Quartz quadrant jap/eur past
[youtube:17pjnls1]nx3yB1iylew[/youtube:17pjnls1]
Wish they still did this kind of music

Just 2?

and
[youtube:2f6a2map]hFTVuLKTnV8[/youtube:2f6a2map]
Really feeling those right now, but my top two tend to change.
-
aaah Metal Harbor! Good god the memories.
-
Two songs? Just two?! I make my own rules and pick some of my random favorites.
Sonic the Hedgehog: Labrynth Zone (http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRaf5D7QVn0) - I love the somewhat laid back, but very positive feel of this, it fits Sonic really well in a strange way. Sonic music is never going to be like this again, sadly.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3: Final Boss (http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyoMQg3d5cs) - I love this one, makes you feel like this is your last chance, and the world's only hope. Pretty damn epic.
Sonic Adventure: Welcome to Station Square (http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcCHR9KktO8) - I think this is the most under appreciated Sonic song of all time.
Sonic Adventure 2: Rumbling Highway (http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fP3ZNbkC3U) - I personally think this is the best song ever for Tails, it should have been his theme song. This is my favorite song from Sonic Adventure 2, it is in my opinion the perfect mix of new and old age Sonic style.
Sonic Unleashed: Shamar Adventure Field at Night (http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPqRspXaqTQ) - Absolutely brilliant song. Very high quality and long.
Sonic Spinball: Lava Powerhouse Zone (http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Y8ht_yqXxg) - Brilliant track. I love how dark it is, but is not obnoxious like most of the later dark Sonic stuff.
Sonic 06: Tropical Jungle Swamp (http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lROkV2a3rfU) - It pisses me off how wonderful this song is. Especially later in the song, around 2:20, which was actually cut out of the game (probably because it sounds too much like older Sonic games)
Anyways, this last one was done by Takenobu Mitsuyoshi. If you listen to it closely you can actually hear his voice in the back a bit. I love it!
-
I think we can do honorable mentions too. (yea why the heck not).
I am not too fond of most sonic adventure 2 music tbh. I mean I like metal harbor but it's not something i'll listen. Songs from adventure 2 which I listen are mostly not very rock orientated. I love this song
[youtube:3523yq49]J3An_2rRMEg[/youtube:3523yq49]
Tomoya Ohtani is the one responsible for most of these kind of songs and ever since unleashed, he's become the main mack daddy composer. The lead music composer with occasional cooporation with Jun Senoue. He played big part in sonic 06's ost.
I wonder though, what do you guys think of asteroid coaster? I thought it sorta resembled adventure 2's but done right.
[youtube:3523yq49]V2RC6B52MWM[/youtube:3523yq49]
@sega uranus
I love sonic 06's music. Great pick
-
it sorta resembled adventure 2's but done right.
as if there was anything wrong with adventure 2's music besides you griping with the game erry time over errything.
have at you!

Escape from the city and chao garden . The others not so much. :$ Never been fond of vocalized theme songs. But I guess that's what they have been doing ever since sonic cd. I loved sonic shuffle's intro music however!
Take that you!!
[youtube:pxrs849b]HYXGXKNcnyo[/youtube:pxrs849b]
Do you like that song? Asteroid coasters
-
I don't know if they're my favorite, per se--but they really stand out.
The first is the ending music from Sonic the hedgehog 2. It's the first time, I think, that I ever felt moved by videogame music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a75gm_ovvsY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a75gm_ovvsY)
This music makes me feel like everything's going to be okay.
The second is from Spring Yard Zone.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyGqB1WwXLY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyGqB1WwXLY)
...For no other reason that I always catch myself randomly singing it. :|

I freaking love that intro dude!
As some around here know, I'm pretty fond of Sonic Shuffle. I think it's a great game and find odd that other people don't. But that's okay..
I love Crush40. The Daytona tracks and all. I like classic rock and strong vocals, so SA2's soundtrack is pretty much perfect for me.
Speaking of Sonic CD...
[youtube:f9i69pqg]o3PgxYA-5QE[/youtube:f9i69pqg]
this is great..
-
Asteroid coasters sounds nice. But it's very new to me. I haven't played Sonic Colors yet.. :)

You know, if you guys want to get really into agreeing on the BEST Sonic tunes, we could nail down a comprehensive list that fits an 80 minute CD-R and I could write up a "SEGAbits Sonic 20th Anniversary Playlist" article later this year.
Not providing files or anything, just saying "the writers and readers chose these XX tracks, conveniently they fit an 80 minute CD-R. Just sayin'."
I think the only real rules would be that no game can monopolize the list (maybe put a cap at home many can be repped from one game) and the whole 20 years must be observed. Not every title needs representation, but every title deserves a chance at making the list with a song, even if they get voted off.
I don't want to hijack this thread, so if anybody thinks this is a cool idea, I can make a separate thread.
-
The True Blue album is pretty much that already..
But yeah, that would be fun..
-
Bah, True Blue is all Crush 40 and remixes. I'm talking recommending original tunes, even oddities like Tails Adventure and Sonic Labyrinth would have a chance at being featured.
-
This is how I feel about Barry's Sonic articles and the True Blue albums.

I don't mind it man. Ever since the first post I was wanting for a mod to change the name of the thread, so if that's possible please do. I like the idea
-
I'm a mod! I can do anything! (bans you, unbans you, karmas you, unkarmas you, retitles topic).
I think it'd be cool if perhaps each person is allowed one post of two songs per day. They don't have to do new games every day, but are encouraged to mix it up. Sound cool?
-
Allright then! 2 per day sounds good. Thanks. I don't know about the SEGAbits playlist idea but i'll see how that goes :p
-
Yeah, if it goes nowhere, it goes nowhere. But I'm sure we'll get enough tunes.
edit:
my two!
I really like this song. Funny thing is, I recognize it more from Sonic Adventure Dreamcast DLC than from Sonic CD. Didn't get to hear it proper until this year when I successfully emulated SEGA CD titles on my computer and caanoo. Finally get to play both the US and JP versions of the game.
[youtube:3r18egos]DIhH1gxv0hM[/youtube:3r18egos]
And from a game I've yet to own:
[youtube:3r18egos]t7BWme8CTew[/youtube:3r18egos]
The tune reminds me of an upbeat remix of a PSO tune. Really love this one, probably my favorite in the game OST.
-
Sonic CD has something which I cannot truly describe. Sometimes I found it overrated but recently i'm starting to like it more than the other 3 games. The thing with CD is that the game is "challenging" and has a lot in common with sonic 1 but with more speed. Some find sonic 1 boring but I think it's the only sonic game to have some good challenge. Sonic cd has it's flaws here and there but yeah, needs more recognition.
You just made me wanna switch my wii on lol. Sonic colors has a beautiful OST.
Congrats in emulating it lol. It's a pain for the first time getting the tracks right :p. I actually combined best of both.
Anyway, here are my 2 songs for today.
Some excellent guitar play
[youtube:39fonnfe]0lzBfgbl-vE[/youtube:39fonnfe]
And of course the all famous Ice cap
[youtube:39fonnfe]hYxlqTpZ-24[/youtube:39fonnfe]
Needs remix quick!!
-
For me, Sonic CD as a game very much feels like (and basically is) an alternate universe Sonic 2. It is a letdown when playing it after Sonic 2, however I could totally see it being awesome to somebody who had played it and had yet to play Sonic 2. Tidal Tempest had great music (both versions) and some very creative little underwater puzzles. Personally, I loved it when I finally got it and my SEGA CD in 1999. Sounds great in stereo.
-
Needs remix quick!!
Seriously! Well, sort of. There was this one YouTube video of a mix of Ice Cap Zone and "Who It Is" by Michael Jackson. It was awesome. Now I can't seem to find it.
There's a few, but they don't sync up as well...
-
Yeah they defenitly have to do more remixes and throwbacks. Not whole rehashes though
Well anyway, some more songs. Sonic 3d blast on the genesis had some great tracks too. I actually think the music for 3d blast is better than all 3 of the classics.
Rusty ruins. I really like this song
[youtube:1739ygl5]FfG09iLCKsM[/youtube:1739ygl5]
and Diamond dust
[youtube:1739ygl5]Mf7-ixllcgo[/youtube:1739ygl5]
Like in 3&knuckles, the songs come in two version per zone.
-
Going Game Gear today!
The awesome Ice Cap from Sonic Drift 2. Probably my favorite 8 bit Sonic tune:
[youtube:2w8rhy5q]aBR7zj4sbl4[/youtube:2w8rhy5q]
Another favorite of mine, Sonic 1's Master System credits, famously known for being remixed in Unleashed's Mazuri day stage (http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6ektyERQ1E):
[youtube:2w8rhy5q]9ficFPLFby8[/youtube:2w8rhy5q]
-
Picking only two is extremely difficult because I've love the music of the Sonic series so much. I don't have an absolute favorite, but here are two pieces of music I've really enjoyed listening to lately.
[youtube:11iqst31]fC2SYKRFBVI[/youtube:11iqst31]
[youtube:11iqst31]awJTBGiM28s[/youtube:11iqst31]
Come to think of it, I've always loved the music of snow stages in Sonic games.
-
White Acropolis is a good tune, though problem was my first time hearing it was my first time playing the godawful stage. The snowboard physics made me turn '06 off and never play it again. Wish I heard the music before playing the game :P
However, I do really like this '06 tune, regardless of gameplay:
[youtube:2c4vvzy6]ahXzlX6OH_8[/youtube:2c4vvzy6]
It's a lot of fun when used in custom soundtracks with Unleashed.
Since I need to pick another, I have to give a shout out to my boys in Chun-Nan! What are people from Chun-nan called, anyway? Chun-nanese?:
[youtube:2c4vvzy6]djuCGh_I7RI[/youtube:2c4vvzy6]
I just loved this stage combined with the music.
-
I am certain the Mazuri song is not a remix. First of all, why would they pick something so obscure, and why would it be just the one song? I am certain it was an accident, which is understandable considering how basic the song is and how many Sonic games there are now.
And for 8bit Sonic music? Come on, there is no contender to Bridge Zone greatness.
-
Ah man great tunes ^^
I never heard that sonic drift ice cap so it's nice to hear new songs :p.
Well since were on a sonic 06 spree, let me do one as well which I found pretty good.
[youtube:wtclcd8s]HkRzRVIkfu0[/youtube:wtclcd8s]
Also this one
[youtube:wtclcd8s]8kUG5dlRnfs[/youtube:wtclcd8s]
I really love the guitar that starts around 1.40
Yeah sonic 06's music is really good imo.
-
This is probably my favorite boss music from the Sonic Advance games.
[youtube:3sxs5x1j]Sg0U8wHpcz4[/youtube:3sxs5x1j]
While not my favorite type Special Stage in the Sonic Series, the music for the Emerald Special Stages in Sonic Heroes is undoubtedly my favorite.
[youtube:3sxs5x1j]knMUsWRipgs[/youtube:3sxs5x1j]
-
Excellent choices cosmiccastaway. That sonic advance 3 final boss track was indeed awesome. I think it was a remix of emerl's(Gemerl in advance 3) theme song from sonic battle.
[youtube:224pz5rv]ztJUScMb5AY[/youtube:224pz5rv]
I really loved emerl as a character. Never really thought about why, just something mysterious I guess. Imo sonic battle had some excellent story telling, one of the best.
Well let me bump this thread up a bit I guess.
I seem to have a weakness for sonic adventure 1's OST. It was so varied.
Windy valley part 1
[youtube:224pz5rv]obbyL2fRRBU[/youtube:224pz5rv]
And the calming mystic ruins song. It doesn't seem to get mentioned much, but in game it just seems to fit so excellent. Not ignoring the fact that for the genres standards, it's pretty terific. The flute part that begins around 1:00 is a really nice touch as well.
[youtube:224pz5rv]S1i8MEHcX0Q[/youtube:224pz5rv]
I love how music really plays a great importance in sonic games. Buying a sonic game is like buying an album where you have to earn each track by playing
-
My favorite piece of music from Shadow the Hedgehog:
[youtube:21m567rv]5XzyfTfXMI4[/youtube:21m567rv]
It's my favorite stage from the game, and I just think that the music for it is quite great.
And here is one of my favorites from S3&K:
[youtube:21m567rv]hlZQs88r1m0[/youtube:21m567rv]
Love this tune, never get tired of it.
-
I think the Sonic Riders OST is really underrated
Splash canyon
[youtube:3enct1lb]MjENGpHAPXY[/youtube:3enct1lb]
Especially the part at 1:30
Digital Dimension
[youtube:3enct1lb]jVxfvBdeCMQ[/youtube:3enct1lb]
Best track in the game
-
Keeping things in riders territory, I loved these two tracks in Free Riders:
[youtube:1udre97b]_ClovReCad8[/youtube:1udre97b]
[youtube:1udre97b]xY3Dby3tATg[/youtube:1udre97b]
Great beats, and catchy samples. Metropolis Speedway's sunset setting combined with the music gives a very cool vibe to the course. Sort of like a summer night.
-
Here are some more pieces I enjoy:
[youtube:1t8jqo28]Z6Jnpn1s7i0[/youtube:1t8jqo28]
[youtube:1t8jqo28]xtbNgfrtGrs[/youtube:1t8jqo28]

Does this count?
[youtube:2p5424n7]G-4lOQ-70Ro[/youtube:2p5424n7]
A real tear jerker
[youtube:2p5424n7]0FCHk_gSwKo[/youtube:2p5424n7]
-
Yeah they do defenitly. Love them both :D That excersize mode in MBM was really addictive. I have always liked that song hehe.
Here some more
Scrap brain
[youtube:29qvwod3]NoVY7nvcel0[/youtube:29qvwod3]
I remember finding this in the music test menu just by coincedence but still really thought it sounded beautiful.

Was Emerald Hill Zone really not posted yet? I didn't see it.
[youtube:weo2p5yo]y6E5Cx_37HU[/youtube:weo2p5yo]
I didn't see Green Hill Zone either : /
[youtube:weo2p5yo]y-78CMKME4o[/youtube:weo2p5yo]
These two are amongst the most obvious, so are they not allowed or something?
-
I think it may have been because they're predictable hehe. Still great tracks though!
The 2 player music in sonic 2 was great too imo
Emerald hill
[youtube:3ilpu7wc]HgQ_YaJS-NE[/youtube:3ilpu7wc]
And here my favourite one. Sounds almost like a Michael Jackson song from the 80's
[youtube:3ilpu7wc]KhZzANSpUNk[/youtube:3ilpu7wc]
Disagree? Well listen to this
[youtube:3ilpu7wc]mjnfrz2keIE[/youtube:3ilpu7wc]

If we are truly doing this for some 20th anniversary album they need to be on it, easily the most iconic of the entire franchise. Most people associate Sonic music with either GHZ or EHZ music. Also, I think the that Mystic Cave Zone has more layers than Shake your body, Shake your body has less layers in regards to its' instrumentals. It sounds quite a bit more simplistic, I can hear some similarity though.
My choice for the day:
I didn't see Sea Side posted yet:
[youtube:vqkn85w4]AeoLK6M9sts[/youtube:vqkn85w4]
Also, I think I saw some Sonic Shuffle, but not Blizzard of the Coast
[youtube:vqkn85w4]aqQN88lJZSk[/youtube:vqkn85w4]

Nobody posted Bridge Zone yet right?

Love Bridge Zone! One of the most underrated Sonic stages ever in my opinion. =D
[youtube:1ah756et]9utFNqhJUgY[/youtube:1ah756et]
Another great piece of music from S3&K
[youtube:1ah756et]gdlg1u69Fa0[/youtube:1ah756et]
Favorite piece from Sonic and the Black Knight.
