Title: Some new Vanquish tidbits
Post by: Pao on February 20, 2010, 11:21:50 am
One of the CG designers (who actually designed the suit) has made a comment on Gametrailers that contained some tidbits.

Quote
Ok all you folks,

Here is the scoop........ and I think that I can help correct those inaccurate guesses....definitely it's going through SEGA. The video you see is a teaser trailer. That is all you are going to get until the powers that be release more... hehe.... As you can see by my avatar. that's me, Paul Wendling. I am also listed in the credits as the costume designer, but what you perhaps didn't know is that for me it's basically an Ironman situation come to real life. I designed the action suit, I personally built that suit, I then acted in that suit, I did all my own stunts in that suit. (3 days of filming) The undergarment is actually (according to the script) an augmented neuro controlled artificial musculature, similar to the robots in I Robot. Then the protective over armour is placed to help protect the main heart of where the strength comes from, namely the muscle undersuit. The main character, Sam, is a secret DARPA lab weapons designer, and when he hears about the destruction, takes it on himself to go out and use his development, and kick some Russian tech and grunt butts.

I can't reveal more until I'm permitted, but if you have any questions about the suit construction, or filming, I'd be happy to oblige.

The trailer is a mix of live action and cgi, but everywhere you see Sam in or out of his suit, that is me doing the acting and stunts, all LIVE and REAL, with air cannons throwing debris, jump rigging, being blown away by explosions, etc. with cgi cleanup and augmentation of some elements like the last blast fling. All backgrounds were cgi of course, but the suit has some new twists, that NO other shooter character has, and you guys will go ape over some new moves..... think perhaps Metroid for a hint(but keeping to actual workable real life physics), and another hint... those curious items on the thighs...... let's just say that you will have to have 3 hands on gameplay to really master the possibilities of unheard of before moves. Another hint, those big forearm bulges in the armor... hide some really cool things as well :)

As to the comments about the faceplate covering the mouth, not the eyes..... The blue plate is a nano barrier for breathing, the helmet actually totally opens and closes up in a segmented fashion (think the helmets from Lost in Space, or Stargate.) The vision is not through glass, but I'm looking at displays projected onto the eyes, which are fed from multiple sensors over the helmet.

I've got tons of pics from filming. The suit was hell to do all the stunts in, altogether weighed about 40 pounds, the gun weighed another 12 pounds. Aaannnnd when I'm released to be able to do so, I have all the molds..... anyone want a ridiculously expensive Video game hero suit for this upcoming halloween?

All the best,
Paul Wendling

So appearntly, the suit is going to play a big part of the game!

Sounds awesome! I cant wait to see what the suit can do in game.

I'm a bit bummed that the enemies are Russian though... Really sick of that cliche.

I couldnt agree more.

'Evil Russians' have been such an annoying American cliche ever since before the cold war days...

Frankly I bet Russians are sick of playing games where they are 'evil' etc.

How often are Russians villains in video games? Besides James Bond. And I really don't think that it'll just be the Russians. My bet is a much bigger conspiracy to get Russia and America at war for some bigger purpose. NWO?

I think Sharky's point is more that they've been the generic villian in the majority of American media (films/books/tv) from the end of WWII to the fall of the Berlin Wall, and then sporadically since then.
Which is to say, they've played the part of the villians quite often.

Well, the trailer does look like an alieninvasion type of flick:

(http://http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/8836/vanquishteasertrailerhi.jpg) (http://http://img709.imageshack.us/i/vanquishteasertrailerhi.jpg/)

But on closer shots, these guys don't look alien at all...

Also on closer inspection, it seems as though Sam isn't the only one wearing a suit.

@SOUP

You know, I don't get that impression at all.
Russians, but especially Soviet Russia's portrayal in the american media has always been somewhat sympathetic.

The real villain in generally many movies post-1970s has been to a greater degree, the american goverment, the american military(the so called indutrial-military complex) and the CIA.

The very few american made film that has communists as true villains is Red Dawn and Rambo. There are barely 15 american movies produced that are anti-communist (http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:American_anti-communist_propaganda_films).

Funfact

In the original The Return of Godzilla, a Russian commander tries (Unsuccessfully as he dies) to stop a nuclear missile hitting Tokyo, in the American dub, the scene is recut to make the Russian commander look like he actually launched the missile himself.

Even Godzilla was used as a form of propaganda!

True. Sorry about that.

The way the guy describes Vanquish, it almost feels like it's an answer to the old school Metroid game(or the most recent Shadow Complex).

I hope Mikami shows Nintendo how to do Metroid like Kojima showed them how to do Zelda with Okami.

Instead i am increasingly convinced that this will be an FPS with "innovative" elements as it was METROID PRIME at the time , although until now i myself would have bet on a third-person shooter ,  which i prefer.

Regarding the fact of RussiansVS.USA do not like me too , from PLATINUM GAMES i expected more inventive ; but it is still called the 'last word.

Don't you think engine wise this might be the true next gen "successor" to the RE4 engine?

I'm envisioning a third-person shooter with QTE's and CQC.

Exactly, the nWo was literally run by Hogan and friends. The nWo was the rise but was also the hard fall of WCW.

So, about that game Vanquish... PN03 2?

Let's hope not, but it might inherit something from it.. I was just thinking there might be some clues in that rather than thinking Mikami was doing an FPS.

CQC?

I agree it would have been nice to see a rehaul to the RE4 style, seeing as RE5 didn't really do much to advance the series at all (Still a fun game though).

At this point I'm happy to just sit back and wait to see how it pans out though, I really don't know what to predict now.

I hope Vanquish to have a third person view.

A third-person shooter is what i hope but when the designer of the suit speaks about METROID in those terms i immediately comes to mind PRIME , stop.
