Sega and Three Rings are having a closed preview game and I've already started playing it.
It's an interesting take. It's sorta of a mix between Legend of Zelda and Phantasy Star Online.
Still trying out the early potions just to get the feel for the controls, which seem kinda simple.
-
max, how did you manage to get the invitation to play?
I'm really interested in the game; I joined the newsletter three days ago but nothing
-
I played it the day SEGA announced it. Just follow SpiralKnights on twitter, they occasionally update saying they have spots open. Even if you don't get it though.. game officially opens on April 4th.. so not too long :)
Game is pretty fun, and I love the music.
-
Wow. You guys are tempting me.
-
PC only?
-
It's a Java based game.
-
ooooooh! So I can play it! :D
Unlike Shogun 2, PSO2 and a ton of other games.
I like the visual style. Looks like something SEGA would have released in the Saturn days.
-
Thanks Shadi :]!!!

Joined. I am "Barry". Original, right!? My mommy and daddy made the name up.

Thanks for the signup link! I like it so far. Really cool art direction and music... I would like it to support a controller though.

There are Suggestion boxes littered around the game world, make a suggestion about it. It's a good idea!
I'd like to use my USB xbox360 controller!
-
Wow, having quite a bit of fun with it. Some lag on my end, and I don't know if having a Mac differs from a PC some, but all-in-all, it's great. ...You can kind of feel the addiction creeping in. :!:
-
I've not had any lag yet on my PC, even with a bunch of MSN and browser windows open.
I was thinking it ran very, very well honestly.
Either way, very addictive!
-
It runs pretty OK on my PC. I don't have a good GPU though, so I'd say it runs pretty well for my crappy PC =P
-
I've also learned that you can buy some in-game assests using credit cards, but that is to be expected.
According to what I've read on the the game forums, after the beta phase is over, you will lose a ton of stuff that you gathered but you will retain your account and character stats.
-
It runs great on my iMac! I played for like 10 minutes last night, briefly saw crackdude. I'll have to play more this weekend!
In the suggestion box, I requested that they do holiday events and SEGA inspired items. I'd happily buy an Eggman sword or a Space Channel 5 gun. They have the SEGA connection, might as well milk it for some nostalgia.

Works flawlessly on my 2 macs.. It only fails to open up Firefox to buy Energy but wtv.
Saw Barry and Sharky there last night. Really fun game.
I find the whole Energy <=> Crowns trading thing very interesting. Too bad I don't have credit card or paypal. I don't want to pay by phone.. It's 4(!!!) times the price.

Edit: they have 500 spots, lol

I'd like to use my USB xbox360 controller!
In an e-mail I received yesterday from the developers, there is written that the game supports gamepad controls and the gamepad may be configured in the options menu, a mouse is however necessary for the user interface. Not yet tested by me.
The last night I played few hours and with my new SEGAbits nick "Deefy", in the game deefy, (I'm the old F-D_M), I encountered crackdude and Centrale.
-
I played about 10 minutes at work on a macbook pro, then on my TV on the mac mini. On the Mac Mini the text was too small to play effectively on my TV. I couldn't read the messages on the left or the guide messages on the signposts.
-
If anyone sees a Knight called "Cheeseburger" that would be me...
-
I really have been wanting to play this, but every time I try to sign in I get a screen with my character slots and some text on the bottom of my screen that says "Heading into town...". Any idea as to what I should do?
-
Sanus, that happened to me before I opened up the firewall on my other computer.
-
Got your invite. Accepted.
-
Been playing off and on since yesterday. A lot to figure out still, but I love it so far.
Now I'm using my X360 controller on my Macbook Pro! Hah!!!
-
I've already gone through the early training dungeons. I've recorded a ton of footage using FRAPS, I know they lifted the NDA restrictions, but I'm still coy about uploading it.
-
Wait, is it possible to use a USB Saturn pad...???
(goes to test it out)
-

I hope so, I just ordered one from ebay.
-
I've been able to move with the D-pad, but don't know how to map to the buttons. Wonder if its somewhere in system prefs rather than in the game itself.
-
Finally, after 2 long days, I got to play the first real post-preview version of the game.
It's a damn shame that I had to build up my character again and lost just about everything, including crackdude's gamertag.
Having said that. A lot has changed. Different monsters.
There aren't cuddly jelly blocks, little foxes and chameleons. I've already fought zombies and massive golems.
Good stuff.
If anybody needs to find me, I'm Chesseburger.
Perhaps, we should consider a SegaBits Spiral Knight hour. I've got FRAPs so we can record our exploits. Booya!
-
I think there is software to custom map anything to your game controllers. I don't know it exactly, but if Barrington and Emmet want to check that out I'm sure you could find it via some googling.
-
I just tried the official release of the game and was able to use my Saturn USB pad right away. Only thing that wasn't mapped was the shield, but I could rotate weapons with XY, attack with A and move about with the d-pad. Also, the start button brought up inventory.
-
Enjoying so far, ocassional difficulty spikes here and there.
It's kinda like an easier to pick up and play PSO.
-
I'm impressed. I really am. Long time have I been searching for a good MMO that actually isn't just exploring and grinding. This game feels so much more like an actual single player game, just like phantasy star online was.
Anyway my name login name is Jaouad. Add me if you like!
-
When I get back on, I'll re add everyone.
-
Too bad i've lost my beta character and friends list :( I'm already addicted to this game, no jokes, is awesome!
And if anyone wants to add me i'm Ulala
-
So, for those of you using a controller, I got mine kind of mapped but.... it's weird, the directions you move in are relative to the direction you're facing. So in order to move around without having to think about it, I have to always be facing north. This makes it hard to attack to the sides. Is it like this for everyone? EDIT: Nevermind, I found this info in the wiki. http://http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Gamepads
Also just as a general question, what do I need to do to use a PS3 controller on my PC. I plugged it in and it recognizes it, but the four little lights just flash and it doesn't seem to be recognized by Spiral Knights when I try to map it. I have another PC controller but the PS3 controller is nicer.

Spiral Knights on XBLA could totally work with this system in mind.
-
Who still plays this? I still do pretty often :D
Great news btw
-
Hey folks, just started up and enjoying it thus far, username is Kagemaru for those who are interested. Also very excited to see an active SEGA community after my failed ventures over at SEGAFanatic.
-
Hey sup. Welcome to the forums and yeah it's pretty active here. I'd say you found(at least imo) "THE" SEGA website/community.
WEll anyway. I play this game pretty often so I might be there later.
Looking forward to do some dungeons with ya :D

Not to derail too much, but I noticed that now SEGAShiro is linking to this forum rather than the one they once had. Interesting because towards the end of SF I considered contacting them to merge our forums. There aren't too many of us left, we pretty much have to merge communities at this point.
Back on topic; Will definitely add you once I log back onto my desktop, but be forewarned that I am pretty much a newb at this point in time.

Hello, Welcome to the forum!
The founder of SegaShiro (DJFob) is an acquaintances of mine, when his forum had a bug or glitch of some kind he asked if he could use our forums.
I agree it’s time to link all Sega communities. Small pockets of Sega fans will wither and fade away but if there’s a big, active community then I think we can keep a much healthier fanbase. That is one of my goals with Segabits.

Yeah, I'll see about getting some of the old SEGAFanatic regulars over here. There weren't too many though. In regards to SEGAShiro; When I wrote the closing down post (which was never published) I originally recommended SEGAShiro as our replacement, is DJFob in these forums any? He should be if he isn't. Really the only major SEGA sites currently standing with proven, lasting, communities are SEGA-16 and RadioSEGA. I guess the SEGA forums, but that place is kind of frightening.... I don't think I really need to say why.
In regards to Spiral Knights: Played a bit with CrazyTails, pretty fun stuff, we did a few floors, game needs a jump button even though I am not sure what they would use it for, maybe work it into some combos? Will likely be playing later tonight.
-
Hehe yeah was really fun playing with ya Taro. I did my best to explain the system but im sure it'll grow on ya soon.
I am personally really starting to love the game. It just started but I can see the game growing as more people have been active with each day. The game has potential to become very large. The system encourages you to invest a little bit of cash so now and then as it helps you progress and gives you an extra boost. I actually ended up investing some.
I think I saw SEGAismysavior coming online for a sec. It'd be cool to see more of you often :p

JD Fod is a member I believe but he rarely if ever posts.
I also knew the founder of RadioSega, 'SegaMark' but he’s gone now. Someone else runs it now. Their forum is pretty dead compared to ours.
Oh yeah and bring them over, bring everyone over you know!

I am sorry to hear SegaMark left, that is super unfortunate. There was another guy there back when I was active in that community that left, Mufasa I believe, it became a lot more boring without him. At least they still have the most killer tunes out there though. With SEGAFanatic I wanted to keep it open, but it just got too exhausting as it really just became me as the sole writer and my original cohort sort of dropped off. Out of 450 posts, I wrote 401. I also did the only video review we ever had, haha. It was fun, but a lot of work and time goes into it and it's even harder when you don't really have the community around you to appreciate it.
Also, Spiral Knights related question: Does anybody know if there are plans for Player Vs. Player stuff in the future?

I remember that Mufasa guy too, I think he MAY still post every once in a while.
Yeah it is very hard to find committed writers and yeah it's hard work for nothing in return. Then you get the odd douche bag telling you that you're not professional enough as if this is my real job! ffffuu!
Anyway, on topic: There was PvP in the Beta but they took it out as it wasn't popular. They did say that they'll bring it back eventually when they have spiced it up a bit and made it more interesting.

Oh, haha, I just remembered you from there. I knew I had seen your username elsewhere. I was Shoshokid back on those forums, if you remember that at all, which you may or may not. Luckily I never had any comments regarding how professional I was, but I also didn't have too many comments period LOL. You guys have a post on your front page with 28 comments or so, my most commented story ever I think got 8... Not entirely sure. Under 10.
Glad to hear there are some PvP plans though, the game has a lot of potential. I just hope I don't get too burned out on MMOs before PSO 2 hits : (. Before this it was FF11 which I quit in like 2004, then I tried WoW, it seemed pretty much like a less entertaining version of FF11 so I dropped it. This is the first MMO title I have enjoyed in about... 7 years. I tried a lot of them too, but basically it is a genre I can pretty easily get burned out on.
Edit: Anybody else noticing the crazy number of Reddit folks in this game too?
-
I think I remember that user name. =)
I don't think you should worry about getting burned out before PSO2 hits, I imagine PSO2 will either be something really special... Or a big mess like PSU. (Touch wood that it isn't like PSU.)

Let us hope so, I believe I sent you a friend request, if your user name in-game is Sharky.. If not I sent a stranger a friend request : P. Also, anybody else appreciating this very soothing OST?

The OTS is one of the games strongest points I think, very awesome.
I dont know when I'll be playing it next.

I don't turn the volume off when I leave the game open in the background : P
EDIT: Just realized something, when I first played SK I teleported to meet up with CrazyTails. I was in the middle of crossing the chasm to Haven when I did so, now I cannot go back to the rescue camp to do so and I still have the annoying objective notification. Can I drop the objective? Or am I stuck with this sucker?

Bump because I need help on this, I posted on the websites forum too, waiting for a reply.
EDIT: http://http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/5177 Would appear a few other guys have the same problem as me, not very widespread though so I guess this could take a while for the devs to fix.
Edit 2: BITCH! Server is offline and I just finished Math homework, why do all these MMO devs choose to oppress insomniacs?
-
Lol I really don't know about that. The game is patching for me now...
-
Just got to my first floor that allows me to go into Tier 2, but gotta get the 2 star gear before I head down : ). Having fun, hope to catch you on again at some point CrazyT.
-
Is anybody else still playing? Maxed out my levels on all the base gear I think, grabbed the recipes for the two star gear but now need all the ingredients and then to transmute them. Fun stuff : ).
-
I had been playing all day yesterday but didn't see u coming online. TBH i became kinda addicted to the game so you'll find me often

Yeah I have been playing later at night, will try to get on earlier. Just tough with College and what not.
-
Just thought I should bump this thread.
I've been playing this game for a while now and surprisingly, I think I now ended up loving it way more than any MMOrpg i've ever played. Yes better than PSO. There are many reasons why I think that's the case, but it would be hard to explain. I mean it is explainable but the way you'll get it is really pouring a day or 2 into the game.
There have been many updates lately. They have added an auction house as well where you can buy and sell stuff. Soms technicalal updates as too. Check out the website's frontpage to see the updates.
http://www.spiralknights.com/ (http://www.spiralknights.com/)
I've been playing this ever since the release (not as beta tester) and have been able to see the game grow with each week or month. I am really loving it and I just wanted to express that.
Segaismysavior and Shining Dawn(which isn't online here that often) is the only one I see now and then hehe, but I hope more of you can give this game a day or two.
Just a little advice if anyone wants to start playing, you can only progress in the game with "energy". Without it you can't do shit as you need 10 energy to progress with each floor. This forces you to check every corner of any floor and get much out of it as possible. Collect enough crowns and you'll be able to buy more energy. If you do it right you can make more profit then losing. This is especially the way to go for "free" players.
-
Been playing this since launch. Only started paying for it last month. Been playing under the name Teddybearknight.
-
I need to get back in, I have another friend (fellow sega fan) who hasn't been playing much and that is why I have been absent. Once he gets his internet situation figured out and is back on I should be around more.
-
I still cannot get my computer to run the game, always gets stuck loading at the menu screen. It really bugs me because this seems like just the kind of game I could get into at the moment.
-
Yeah, I've been having a lot of fun with Crazytails. :afroman:
Anyway, I think Spiral Knights is a great game. Even though my PC is crap, Spiral is still an enjoyable game!
BTW, My Username in Spiral is Hangeki.
I suck at the game
-
@Truesonic, Adding you
@Tora, would be nice to see you lol. I remember still being a beginner myself at the time we started together. Next time we could do some more hardcore places.
@Shining Dawn
You don't suck man. You've became pretty good actually :P
-
I'll add you ShiningDawn, My in-game name is KageMaru
-
Update:
The game just got on steam and man... huge flood of newbies coming in. This is great stuff as the game is fuller than ever now hehe.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/99900/ (http://store.steampowered.com/app/99900/)
-
What's also great is that the Steam version has Steamworks features like Steam achievements. Also, people in your Steam friends list that play the game on Steam automaticly get added as your friend in the game.
And best of all, you get a free hat for Team Fortress 2 for playing the game!
EDIT: That Team Fortress 2 hat offer seems to work, it's in the top 10 most-played games now: http://store.steampowered.com/stats/ (http://store.steampowered.com/stats/)
-
Played about 2 hours worth tonight and finally got into it. Really digging the "old-school Zelda meets Warcarft" feel.
-
Nice to see this bumped. There has been a new patch recently that added a new boss run for tier 2. Me and shiningdawn gave it a run yesterday but the t hing lags like crazy so we died at the boss. Still pretty awesome to see content being added.
-
The new boss is CRAZY. The levels are full of missles and traps, and that boss is super confusing. I beat it with a random group last night, but all I did was mostly take out the respawning bots.
-
I ocassionally go there from time to time...
I'm logging in, right now...
-
Ironically, this may be Sega of America's most successful original IP, considering the speed of users signing up for it.
-
Recently it has got to a million. That's pretty amazing
-
One million people playing it for 5 minutes then uninstalling.
-
Recently it has got to a million. That's pretty amazing
Good news. Now if only KINGDOM CONQUEST got the same sort of love that SK is getting.
-
I don't know about "Successful"
This is a free to play game, which means 1 million players that aren't going to spend cash isn't really helping fund the expenses. Several users hit the spot where many players downloaded the game for a hat/Steam Summer Camp ticket and then uninstalled it. I kind of feel a bit bad since I haven't spent a single cent since the beta.
-
I play the game daily and i'm sure they're making lots of cash with the game. It'll take you months to get the highest equips without spending some money. Sometimes it just feels like an endless task, especially when the market energy prices go up it just becomes more of a struggle. Buying energy becomes very attractive at this point as it helps you to gain a great boost to be able to do the lowest tears.
Best part of all. Even with the best equips, the game stays really challenging and HARD! This ain't a casual game but it requires mad skills. The challenge that's in this game isn't found anywhere in todays era of gaming which makes me love this game so much more. A run can sometimes take to 3 hours but you just don't pay attention because the game is keeping you on your toes alot. It is very satisfying when you're playing really well as a team.
I just remember the other day when I did a tier 3 run for the first time with "segaismysavior" and some other guild member(s). We didn't make it and gave up so close to the core, but personally I enjoyed every moment.
At some point you will have to buy more equips so you have a great arsenal of weps which you have to pick wisely depending on the run you do. Some people just like to collect weapons for fun. This probably results in alot of money spenders in the game.
Theres alot of stuff to this game which reminds me so much of game design of back in the days. It's pick up and play but as you progress, the game pushes you to step up your game and with time you learn theres more to it than just buttonmashing.
Personally I think Phantasy star can learn a thing or two from SK. It would be awesome if battle required the same tactiful team play spiral knights has.
-

What makes it succesful is the ammount of users its attracted since its availability. Even if people don't pay to progress all Sega needs is half or even a quarter of that userbase to keep cashing in regularly. PSO and PSU only sold averagly yet it made a lot of revenue down to the online element.
-
^For every 10 people that only play for free theres a person that spends enough to cover them.
