How quiet it has been on the Sonic front recently?
Unlike the past decade, so far in this one I would go as far as to say I've been aloud to forget Sonic even exists for a while now!
I've heard nothing since last year and it feels quite nice! We have had time to talk about OTHER Sega series for a change! Beautiful...
But I fear this may be the calm before the storm, We know for a fact that this is Sonics 20th Anniversary year and at some point this nice quiet will give way to something either beautiful (Like Sonic Colours) or something utterly terrible... (Like Sonic 06)
I've got nothing to really talk about in this thread, I just wanted to mention the eerie silence on the Sonic front and how I quite like the Sega that isn’t in the shadow of the hedgehog.
-
Ha! You know, you're absolutely right, Sharky.
There was that period that Sonic 4 Ep. I, Sonic Colors, and Sonic Free Riders were all released within a few months of each other.
Aside from that clue that the Sega blogs left--something to due with a book written by an author named Berlin--that implicated Tails being in Episode II (which is the conclusion that everyone came to long ago), things have been pretty quiet.
I might be lambasted for this, but I cannot wait for the upcoming announcements.
-
I can wait... Oh yes I can wait.
I'm much more interested in PSO2 and Creative Assembly’s new console game then anything Sonic related.
That said I think what I really am not looking forward to is the drama that comes with every Sonic announcement. It engulfs our forum, becomes the main topic of convosation for months on end and gets really boring for me after... a month or three.
That said if they can make a Sonic game as good or better then Sonic Colours I will be IN, IN, IN... The ONLY reason I have stopped playing Sonic Colours is because I know every level by heart.
-

I suppose I can't blame you there.
Lines get drawn in the sand, cynics proclaim the end, apologists grasp at straws, and normal threads escalate for pages on the most minute pieces of data. I think we'll be lucky if punches aren't thrown once Sonic 4 Ep. II information is released.
That said if they can make a Sonic game as good or better then Sonic Colours I will be IN, IN, IN... The ONLY reason I have stopped playing Sonic Colours is because I know every level by heart.
While Sonic Colors probably best represents a traditional Sonic game playing out in three-dimensions in terms of momentum, platforming, etc...I'd still rather play the Sonic portions of Unleashed. While detractors of the Sonic games post-S&K have argued that the hedgehog isn't all about speed, Unleashed has me wanting more of what they did right in that department.
-
PSO 2 is where it's at for me too allthough I wouldn't mind a great surprising sonic game
-
This, my friends, is the calm before the storm.
Though it is true, for Sonic's 20th Anniversary there is still little very little noise, but you never know.
It's almost certain that there will be a Sonic 4: Episode 2, but it's all still very sketchy.
It would also be nice to have Sonic Adventure 2 announced for XBLA/PSN.
-
I've been very much anticipating Sonic news, and so yeah, I've picked up on how quiet SEGA has been since November '10. For once we had a GOOD year of Sonic games, so looking forward to the current year is actually a positive experience! Haven't had one of these since 2000/2001. After that, they gave us Heroes in 2003 and it was a mixed bag since then up til last year.
However, I agree with Sharky. It has been VERY nice to have SEGA being SEGA without the Sonic baggage. It's a shame that a Sonic game can't release without all the fan drama, but I guess without them we wouldn't have Sonic games. Can't have one without the other.
Hopefully, obsessed Sonic fans who ONLY think of SEGA as the Sonic company have been reading SEGA's blogs in hopes to spot Sonic news, only to discover other properties like Vanquish, Total War, VCII, PSO2, etc.
At one point last year, a kid at TSSMB said "SEGA IS SONIC" and it killed me a little inside. Get out of your bubble, Sonic fans! I much prefer SEGA fans who enjoy Sonic over Sonic fans who never play any other SEGA IP.
-
I don't know where I fall Barry to be honest. I have played 90% of the Sonic games and love SEGA for that reason. Sonic introduced me to gaming. That said I have played most of segas other series and even most of the games they simply publish.
On the news front. I think it is good. Sonic rebuilt a lot last year with the excellent SASASR and Sonic Colours and the average Sonic 4 and Riders games. Anniversary is coming and should be great. I feel like it will be a rehash of old SEGA games in Sonic Colours/Unleashed style. If they throw in HD Sonic Colours on the HD consoles with it I am all over it!
-
2 Sonic games are more or less confirmed for this year.
Sonic Anniversary and Sonic 4 episode 2 and i'd bet a 3rd one for handhelds or Wii may very well pop up as well.
So we'll have the usual Sonic games, I don't see any silence or absence. They are just waiting for June.

Ideally Sonic is the mirror image of SEGA but the title of SONIC & SEGA ALL STAR RACING SUGGEST that he is bigger then SEGA. Otherwise it would've just been Sega Superstar Racing.

It's important to recognize the difference between a Sega game and a game Sega's publishing. The success of platinum games as a developer really does nothing to improve Sega's reputation as a developer themselves.

I know the difference and I get that a PG game being developed well does not equal a SEGA game being developed well, however a good SEGA published game does a lot for the SEGA image. Check out the praise for Bayonetta and Vanquish. Yes, the gaming media cites PG, but they also often refer to the game as "SEGA's" in the headline or at least the first paragraph. I'm certain that many video game fans would list off Ecco and TJ&E in the same breathe as Sonic and Phantasy Star when listing their favorite SEGA franchises from the 90's. To the casual gamer, the cover art of Bayonetta and Vanquish look no different from the cover for Sonic Colors or Yakuza 4. Same placement of the SEGA logo, same placement of the developer on the back. There isn't even a note saying "yo, PG isn't internal".
-

This old line... look, Platinum put more Sega fanservice into Bayonetta than anything internally developed in recent times that I can think of. It was developed by Platinum but it's a Sega game through and through.

Not to mention that SEGA funds the games and owns the IP's... =P
So technically they are SEGA games.
-
They're as much Sega games as Halos are Microsoft games. No one pats Sega on the back for making them. Bungie and PG get the credit, which is how it should be. It helps Sega's reputation as a publisher, not a developer.
Platinum put more Sega fanservice into Bayonetta than anything internally developed in recent times that I can think of.
So what? It still wasn't made by Sega. The new Mortal Kombat has Kratos as a fully playable character but that doesn't make it a Sony game. It's nice to be responsible for releasing these games but I'm more interested in Sega reclaiming their position as one of the top developers. I love Vanquish but I recognize it for what it is, a Platinum Games game.

SEGA helped in the development of some PG games, mainly Vanquish, plus Sega didn't just publish them, they funded the projects and own the IP.
I understand they're not developed by SEGA, but they are considered Sega games.
I do not understand why you bolded Total War though, because Creative Assembly is owned by SEGA.
-
No one pats Microsoft in the back for Halo series? They own the IP, they are continuing it with Bungie. They call it 'Microsoft's juggernaut'...
Really, Halo was a bad example.
-
I just don't know, this seems like some sort of mental complex without a solution. It's like only being a fan of the 1985 Chicago Bears and not believing that the current Chicago Bears are the real Chicago Bears. Maybe it's 1985 that you're really missing.
-
Both publishers and developers are the reason a product turns out the way it does. I'm just sick of people saying 'SEGA did this game wrong' and when a game is great, its like 'Its not a SEGA game'.
Example: The developers of Alpha Protocol said the game was mishandled and that SEGA would force them to change direction on ideas and add a ton of stuff.
Thus, publishers do have influence in a game. Do you think a game like Bayonetta and Vanquish would be the same with EA or THQ?
-
no, but when PG and Sega part ways, what happens then? I'm not saying publishers don't have influence, they obviously do. I'm just trying to give credit where credit is due. So that we we say "yay Sega," it's Sega that actually deserves it.

There's nothing to argue about. Even if Sega gave some creative input regarding bayonetta, kept their hands off of vanquish or otherwise acted as a "good publisher", they still did not make the game. Is it a sega game? Yes sure. Sega owns it. But before you cite Vanquish or Bayonetta as one of the good sega games of last year, you need to realize that this does in no shape or form represent Sega reclaiming some of their status as a developer. Which is what they are always criticized for. Developing.
The reason I lumped creative assembly in there is because no one in their right mind would credit Sega for the creation of their games. There's a reason they're always cited as separate entity.
-

Creative Assembly Australia was just renamed to Sega Studios Australia, name does not mean much, its still a Sega team, and Total War is Sega developed.
-
I thought bungie moved on and halo still belongs to microsoft? If so than yeah, halo is indeed a bad example. It's like ecco the dolphin being made by acclaim and so on
-
But when people talk about how well made the halo games were, the credit goes to Bungie. In fact it's an issue as to what will become of the franchise now that they're gone. Which is the same thing that will happen if a new bayonetta/vanquish were to be announced post Sega and PG split. People will groan now that development is in Sega's hands. This is the kind of thing that needs to be repaired.
I mean, take the recent success of Total War. In the IGN review, sega isn't mentioned once. It's as if they don't exist. You can blame IGN if you want, but the truth is that public sentiment does not recognize sega as having any part in the matter.

I think it is fair to say that sometimes publishers have very little to do with the development of a game. Take Sega and the Alien vs Predator game. That game was pretty much finished by the time Sega got involved and all Sega really did was act as a means to get the game to stores.
But with the Platinum Games deal it is more of a partnership, whilst PG of course make up the majority of the development team I simply don't think games like Bayonetta, MadWorld or Vanquish would have existed with out Sega being involved. Sega funded the projects and unlike most publishers Sega kept their nose out and did very little to stifle PGs creativity, letting them run wild with their imagination.
Not to mention Sega developers DID help in the development of these games and Sega owns the IP. To me this really does make it a Sega game... Just like Virtua Fighter is an AM2 game but it is also a Sega game. Sure Sega doesn't own PG but I have a feeling even if they did you wouldn't accept it as a Sega game.
Total War... Is a Sega game through and through, though.
-
It just seems like instead of fixing what's wrong with the teams they already have, they're making partnerships with/buying other developers instead.
Total war was a mega popular established franchise long before Sega got involved. How is it a sega game through and through?
Anyway, regardless of what you think, Sega's position in the gaming community has really not changed despite the success of PG or Creative Assembly. If it's not that people don't consider them "Sega games" then what is it?
-

Jeez man you are really desperate to hate Sega.
They aren't buying teams to substitute bad internal teams, Sega have always had western teams... Even in their so called 'heyday' there were 2K Sports and many others.
What’s so wrong with the current teams anyway? I've played some pretty great games from Segas internal teams recently... Heck even Sonic Colours was great.
-
Aw don't get me wrong. I definitely think things are on the up and up. Sonic colors was great and PSO2 seems like it could be promising. I guess It just seems like things have gotten creatively stagnant for a while now. Sega hasn't developed a new, exciting IP since Valkyrie(2008) and Yakuza(2007). And generally, sega as a whole has disappeared from the spotlight. I don't want to hate sega, but I miss it when they were real contenders for quality with some AAA titles. Now a days we're lucky if they release a solid to good game. I just think in this discussion about how a lot of people mistake Sonic's reputation for the companies, it's just as important to not mistake PG's(and to an extent, CA's) success for Sega's.
-
While I agree there hasnt been anything in the way of exciting NEW IPs recently developed in house, I'm not really bothered... If anything I would rather they went back and made some sequals to my favourite games of the past.
I'm really not bothered that Sega aren't the big thing in the spot light right now, frankly to be the big thing would mean they really aren't anything like Sega anymore...
First Person Shooters are BIG NEWS right now, Western RPGs, Gritty Sci-Fi, GTA clones set in the wild west... Dancing and sims.
I would much rather Sega continue to be like Sega, make great arcadey games, great JRPGs... Invest in very Japanese publishers that make great games like Bayonetta and Vanquish, which, if you ask me... Feel like Sega games.
Right now all I want from Sega is a return to form for the Sonic games and I believe that things will instantly be looking up for the companies reputation.

Best thing I've ever read on the forum to date!
You have my respect.

For those who are trying to give SEGA credit for PG's game as far as I know (and I maybe wrong cause I don't religiously read PG news), SEGA was responsible for porting Bayonetta to PS3, where as PG made the 360 game on their own.
From what I've read the PS3 port is inferior to PG's design, and the SEGA references they added in to their games was there own ideas. SEGA only gave permission.
That isn't to say SEGA teams don't work closely with published games for example SUMO Digital, SEGA teams work very closely with them on the games they make or port, in fact the entire model of Gillius Thunderblade was done by Makato Uchida's team (stated by SOL way back).

Lastly other than Stimulus (money), SEGA has no involvement in TOTAL WAR or the other studio... Sports Interactive.
Mike Hayes openly stated SEGA saw money to be made in a segment, and bought out the best developers in that segment.
If SEGA were able to hire Miyamato and the rights to MARIO. It wouldn't qualify as a SEGA game (at least not for fans, from a legal standpoint obviously it will be a property of SEGA, just like Total War)
As a fan I think SEGA development criteria includes something fresh or a fun spin on the tried and tested. For example GTA Mafia-esque game inspired franchise Yakuza. It mixed the gameplay of SpikeOut (running on Shenmue engine) with the mafia stories of GTA, only instead of the Mafia you had Yakuza.
Targetted at the GTA demographics but 100% SEGA.
So what is SEGA about Total War other than the legal paper work?
-
I think it's as simple as the developers being recognized and getting all the credits for making the game, but that doesn't keep them from being SEGA games.
It's like saying every Sonic game made by DIMPS is not a SEGA game. DIMPS are the ones that get trashed for doing such lousy jobs or complimented, as they are recognized as the developers, but that doesn't mean they're not SEGA games
-
Creative Assembly and Sports Interactive are 100% SEGA studios! Ok they are purchased but they are internal development. Platinum games is not a SEGA studio. But SEGA owns the Bayonetta and Vanquish IP's. It's that simple. Bayonetta being good can only be a good thing for SEGA...
-
So what is SEGA about Total War other than the legal paper work?
Didn't you already start a thread about your conflicted Total War feelings? ;) There's already a full page of responses as to what is Sega about Total War.
The whole thing about the relative Sega-ness of titles they publish by other developers in my eyes, is that they are selected by Sega for their artistry and technical prowess, as well as their potential commercial appeal.
But rather than constantly defend this position that Sega-published games are real Sega games, I would like to turn things around and find where people with your opinion actually draw the ideological line. What is truly pure Sega? Only internally-developed titles, so you say. But what about employees who have been hired by Sega after previously spending years working for other developers? There are certainly some Capcom immigrants skulking around in the Sega complex... touching monitor screens and leaving sticky residue on the keyboards. Surely they're diluting the Sega genepool. They need to be... how to put this tastefully?... at the very least quarantined, if not somehow 'disappeared' in order to maintain the purity of Sega blood. You see what monsters you truly are? Welcome to your own personal slippery slope of digital genocide, people. I hope you're happy.

Frankly I'm starting to hate this 'IS IT SEGA OR ISNT IT' bullcrap I read on forums these days. Sega is not a god or an entity, it's a videogame company made of individual people... People that come and go all the time. The company is only as good as its work force.
The Total War studio is owned, funded and all the employees paid by the Sega company... What exactly isn't Sega about it?
Some of Segas most 'Sega', games weren't developed by Sega... Shining Force, Comix Zone, Streets of Rage, Wonderboy... The list is huge.
I swear some people seem to believe that the employees at Sega were all conceived and raised by the Sega corporation and anyone else simply isn't 'Sega'. I bet MOST of Segas employees at any point in history worked at another video game company before Sega.
-
Come on guys. This is silly.
I will start with Bayonetta, which not only has SEGA references, but had people all over from inside the company helping design elements of the game. H., Takenobu Mitsuyoshi, even Toshihiro Nagoshi had some input in the overall design of the product, from everything from art to music. Vanquish even has enemies from Space Harrier in it, come on, that is pretty freaking awesome!
Yet something like Valkyria Chronicles honestly reminds me of almost nothing of what SEGA has ever done, if anything it reminds me more of stuff like Final Fantasy Tactics and some similar games, and some of the people who actually worked on games like that make Valkyria now. Does this make it less of a SEGA game somehow? No, it is SEGA no matter what we do or say, and always will be.
On Total War... Come on. SEGA owns the company, the franchise, and many of the people who work on the series now were moved from other SEGA studios or never had a job previously. How is this somehow not SEGA?
This argument is turning into "Only creative Japanese games that I like are worthy of SEGA's name". It is no better than the kind of shitty arguments Fluffy used to throw out just to get attention, and has no reason to continue.
-
Simon Jeffery and Bernie Stolar didn't even belong at SEGA in my book and that is why they caused so much damage. Mike Hayes on the other hand is some one who climbed the SEGA corporate ladder and we all love him.
Sumo Digital is not a SEGA studio, but they worked with SEGA long enough to establish a place in the hearts of SEGA fans before they were allowed to make original games with SEGA Characters and we all love him and accept them as 100% SEGA.
With this Total War studio you have more than a few people who don't accept them why is that?
Difference in ideology, from a business stand point you stand 100% correct, they are SEGA. But every corporation has a mode of operation and inserting someone from a different place will show a difference inserting that idiot Jeffery lead to SEGA releasing more crappy license software than ever before, it isn't like SEGA never made a license game or a bad license game but with him all the games he commisoned were disasters or average at best, but they brought in cash so SEGA continued making shitty games as evident with Thor (hopefully his curse will end now).
Similarly Total War is a game that brings in money from a segment SEGA previously did not cater to, unlike the license games they don't suck. However they don't feel like SEGA games they feel like Creative Assembly games, just like Platinum Games feel like Capcom games where as Sumo Digital games feel like SEGA games.
Look let's agree to disagree. You are right from a business point of view so be happy about that.
-
Those are some weird standards... Well if you are right then Yuji Naka is not a SEGA developer, he is a Namco developer because he wanted to work for them first.
Games that "Do not feel like SEGA" is a silly argument and clearly subjective. Can you name one game SEGA had before Jet Set Radio that was like it? Well, there were none, so I guess it is not a SEGA game or something!
-
Some of Segas most 'Sega', games weren't developed by Sega... Shining Force, Comix Zone, Streets of Rage, Wonderboy... The list is huge
SOR was developed by SEGA, so was the original Shining Force game and Comix Zone. Wonderboy you're spot on

No, They are not 100% SEGA at all.

I agree with pretty much everything you've said, bar this . It is not a SEGA game at all and just because it has SEGA references means very little . Play MGS on the Cube it has a ton of Nintendo References , now is MGS a Konami game or a Nintendo game ?. Snatcher on the Mega CD has a few bonus SEGA References, is that a SEGA game or a Konami game? .
The company is only as good as its work force
And games, and that's always what counts
There are certainly some Capcom immigrants skulking around in the Sega complex... touching monitor screens and leaving sticky residue on the keyboards
You don't half talk a load of silly stuff
Creative Assembly and Sports Interactive are 100% SEGA studios! Ok they are purchased but they are internal development. Platinum games is not a SEGA studio. But SEGA owns the Bayonetta and Vanquish IP's. It's that simple. Bayonetta being good can only be a good thing for SEGA..
AT LAST, Somebody gets it . Spot on Post
It's like saying every Sonic game made by DIMPS is not a SEGA game. DIMPS are the ones that get trashed for doing such lousy jobs or complimented, as they are recognized as the developers, but that doesn't mean they're not SEGA games
They do the programming work, like they do for Street Fighter IV . Sonic and SF IV are designed in-House and the duties for the programming are handed out (that happens a lot) , just like they were for Sonic R, or Code Veronica , or PSO on the PSP ECT
First Person Shooters are BIG NEWS right now, Western RPGs, Gritty Sci-Fi, GTA clones set in the wild west... Dancing and sims.

FPS have been big news for a while and no I wouldn't want SEGA Japan to make its own (it would do a horrible job and so would most of Japan) What I want SOJ to do , is invest in it's own Teams and give them the Big Budgets ,development time and multi platform engine and strategy , that is seems to allow Platinum games, compared to its own Yakuza Team (for example)
SOJ needs to Up it's In-House game support for the next gen (we are now 6 years in) and start to complete with great Tech and interesting looking games, like FromSoftware (dark Souls) or Q? (Eden) Sony Japan (The Last Guardian) Games that get the gamers talking (forget the casual for a moment)
It's pretty sad when most people and the wider public are looking forward too, or talking about more games developed by Platinum rather than SEGA it's self.
Mind you Sonic Team and the PSO team should get people talking for the right reasons this year, and it be nice if SEGA made more use of the Hedgehog and Canvas engines too (for the 350 and PS3) . Still no one meet the brilliance of the shader program of Canvas, and I very much looking forward to VT IV
-
I stick by the "if it says SEGA on the box, it is a SEGA game" rule of thumb.

SOR was developed by SEGA, so was the original Shining Force game and Comix Zone. Wonderboy you're spot on
I always thought SOR was developed by 'MNM Software' who are they then? =0
As for Shining FORCE I ment they most iconic ones were developed by Sonic/Climax/Camelot.
I know Comix Zone was developed by 'Sega Technical Institute' who I consider Sega, but I was deliberately talking in cubes standards, where anything outside of Sega Japan isn't 'Sega' even if they are...
Agree 100%, but I wouldn't want Sega to sacrifice what they do now, the arcade games and the niche titles to become some kind of 'popular publisher everyone talks about.'
I agree, Last Guardian for sure, it is very Panzerish to me.
A new Valkyria Chronicles on home console would do it!
Mind you Sonic Team and the PSO team should get people talking for the right reasons this year, and it be nice if SEGA made more use of the Hedgehog and Canvas engines too (for the 350 and PS3) . If we can get a new great Sonic game, PSO2 and a Valkyria Chronicles on home console announced this year I will be VERY happy! And while it isn't a SoJ game the next Creative Assembly action game I think will be something awesome.
-
I always thought SOR was developed by 'MNM Software' who are they then
Like Ancient a team brought in to help with the Coding (like with Sonic R, Daytona USA 2001 ECT) The design and development of the game was SEGA.
I know Comix Zone was developed by 'Sega Technical Institute' who I consider Sega, but I was deliberately talking in cubes standards, where anything outside of Sega Japan isn't 'Sega' even if they are...
Well that's just being silly on CUBE part. A In-House team is a In-House Team no matter where they happened to be based. I lot of the Pal and USA SEGA Hardware was never made in SOJ, but China and the like, does that mean they also don't count has not 'SEGA'. I guess Sonic II, III, Die-Hard Arcade, Alien Front Online weren't SEGA as they were all developed in USA
Agree 100%, but I wouldn't want Sega to sacrifice what they do now, the arcade games and the niche titles to become some kind of 'popular publisher everyone talks about.
I don't either, but SOJ needs to up its game on the 360 and PS3.
I agree, Last Guardian for sure, it is very Panzerish to me.
A new Valkyria Chronicles on home console would do it!
Yes need a game from SOJ that gets its own fans and gamers talking for the right reasons.
If we can get a new great Sonic game, PSO2 and a Valkyria Chronicles on home console announced this year I will be VERY happy!
So will I and it can and could happen . SOJ just needs to back and have faith in its own Teams a bit more. I think the Val team have more than shown they could made an incredible game for the 360 or PS3 now
I stick by the "if it says SEGA on the box, it is a SEGA game" rule of thumb
So Courier Crisis a SEGA developed game, So was Duke Nukem, Resident Evil , Quake, Full Auto, The Club, Planet 51, Bleach all SEGA developed games ?. I think there's always a Difference to games that with developed or Published In-House to games just singed up
-
If anything, SEGA West has to actually advertise Japanese games. VC2/PSP2 came out without much hype. Two great games that scored very well.

@ Ryan, TA and Sanus:
If you are going to talk about my silly/stupid/whatever criteria of a SEGA game atleast no what it is.
1) It is a SEGA game on a SEGA Console - Shut Up - IT IS A SEGA GAME:P
2) It is unique and innovative and made by a fresh designer. For example STI's Comix Zone (Peter Moriawec), The OoZe (Mark Cerny) and so on.
3) Those who have a past with the original SEGA teams such as Sumo Digital are accepted, they can make a new IP published by SEGA and I will accept it.
4) Collabration work such as the Phantasy Star Portable and Sonic Rush is accepted. Since Platinum Games have worked with SEGA Producers and offer so many SEGA references in Bayonetta, I accept it. But I'm still not going to play it, it just isn't for me.
5) Established IPs and Designers are not SEGA - Total War is an established brand with no intervention by any prominent SEGA personality. Sports Interactive and Creative Assembly were doing their own thing before SEGA acquired them and they are doing their own thing after SEGA acquired them.
SEGA simply wanted money from a target demographic with Managers and Strategy games and they now have it, I see no effort made to reel in actual SEGA fans towards that genre therefore I can't accept it.
DONE.
-
Wow... so it's so complicated. Jesus.
Not just Cube, but anybody who spends so much time making up all these rules and factors involved in SEGA game or not SEGA game. From my standpoint, it's laughable.
-
I can't see that image.
I didn't take the time out to make these rules (except prior to making the post), it is just how I felt comfortable. I don't enjoy playing published games I tried them before coming to that realisation for example Condemned it is a great game, I spent good money on it and on sunkcost principle I literally punished myself by finishing that game.
I think I am using SEGA as a synonym for the kind of games I would want to play and I don't want to play Captain America, Golden Compass, Thor Total War, Sports Manager and all these other games that are basically segments that SEGA Corporation weren't catering to but wanted profits from them anyway.
Maybe it is laughable.
I am also a huge supported of the Blue Sky Campign:
- Change everything that's grey into blue.
- From now on, everyone wears red shoes.
- Make everything happen at midday or sunset.
- Replace gun textures with banana textures.
- Turn all cars into pink convertibles that wobble and only do 15mph.
- If you get 100 of anything, a little tune plays.
- Instead of saying "crew" say "your buddies".
- Instead of saying "hood" say "zone".
- Make the female characters something other than prostitutes.
- Make the black characters something other than drug dealers.

Am I the only one who thought Sonic Colours was average at best? I stopped playing after I got to the second world. It was probably the best Sonic game in a while, but that's really not saying much at all.
-
Though you aren't too into Sonic to begin with, right MadeManG74? So I'd guess that makes sense to think that. I've only played the first act at a gamestop, so I can't say much about it, but from what I saw it was enjoyable. Though I was really wishing that the stages were based in more classic Sonic environments (checkered hills, volcanos, snowy mountain, etc). The visuals had more of a Sonic CD vibe.
-
I love the Genesis Sonic games (naturally) and own them on about every console I have (Originals, Sonic Jam, Sonic Mega Collection, Genesis Collection, XBLA) and I even loved the hell out of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 when they came out. Since then though I haven't found anything that was really worth enjoying (Although I did think Sonic and the Secret Rings was pretty cool in concept and worked so much better than the horrible Sonic 06). So while I ignore most of the news/games now, it's mostly becuase there hasn't been anything much good to come from Sonic in recent years. You know how I feel about Sonic 4 as well, so I won't get into that...
Thing is, it's nothing to do with how much I like Sonic, but it just wasn't all that fun I thought. It didn't feel a whole lot like classic Sonic, and it wasn't much chop as a platformer on it's own merits either I thought.
The jokes and dialogue were the best I've seen in many a year for a Sonic game though ("You know, when you consider we're robots, what we are doing here is actually quite gruesome if you think about it...")
-
Sonic Colors is a pretty boring game and those wisps actually bring the game down cause in previous Sonic games, Sonic had abilities that you could use whenever you want.
With this game you already have a restricted track to run on, but you can't use Sonic trademark moves like spin dash, or light speed dash without acquiring the wisp for it.
-
Spin dash has been MIA since 2006, though I believe it showed up in the Wii version of Unleashed, but only when you hit a certain boost pad. So I was happy to see a form of it appear again via a power up. Light speed dash was something I was never a fan of. It either took to long to charge (SA1) or sporadically worked (SA2) or was broken (Heroes, Shadow, '06). Unleashed did a pretty good job with it, rarely did it go wrong for me, but they used it for far to many quick reaction moments.
-
I think it was perfected in SA2, it is broken like everything else in Shadow05/Sonic06.
Though the Spin Dash was prominently available in Sonic 06.
It was the wretched Unleashed that screwed things up, it removed Ring Boxes with Gaint Mario like Coins and introduced the inability to collect rings after getting hit.
Atleast Colors fixed the ring issue, now if they can restore the Ring boxes and get rid of the Huge rings stolen directly from Mario i'd be much more at ease.
End of the day what kills Colors are the invisible walls. The wisp only hurt the gameplay, they are cool but the whole temporary power up kind of thing they have is extremely heavy handed and makes the game feel even more linear.
-
Wisp are the best, most fun thing added to a Sonic game in over a decade, they open new paths and new powers that are enjoyable to find and use.
I LOVED the wisps, In fact if they can introduce the same kind of powers in all Sonic games I'll be very happy... As element sheilds maybe.
I found Sonic Colours to be the best Sonic game since Sonic Adventure 1 and I enjoyed it a ton, the gameplay was fun, the wisps added a lot to replay, the worlds were beautiful. the graphics were amazing for the Wii and the sound track was really, really fucking great.
If you only played to world 2 then perhaps that is why you didn't get into it...
-

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the original Sonic The Hedgehog on Genesis not have the ability to collect rings after getting hit? It's been awhile.

You are wrong.

That's a couple of hours of gameplay, and I didn't enjoy it much. I think I gave it a fair go.
I'll give it another shot again later down the track, but for now, I'd rather play Yakuza 4.
-
You should Mademang. It does get more interesting more you progress. Lately i've been giving it some playthroughs(in challenge mode) and the first world is nothing special. Allthough I do think the second worlds is where it starts. If you didn't like it still than I can say that it does get better. I hope you'll like it or else it just isn't your cup of tea :p.
-

I have a strong feeling that Sonic Anniversary will reintroduce the item boxes with Wisp-like powers. Why not have enhanced elemental shields? Lightening = laser, Fire = Frenzy, water = usual bubble, earth (new element) = drill, wind (new element) = rocket. Then the usual shield and invincibility.
-
Unlikely, while it would be awesome.
The present Sonic Team has removed the boxes altogether, I personally think it sucks but in Unleashed they removed ring dropping. But Colors brought them back, so let's hope the boxes return.

Ah ha! But remember we did see them return in Sonic 4. Despite the green eyes and modern Eggman, they still brought back the old TV monitors. Also, a render of Sonic celebrating the 20th was leaning on a old school TV box. Not the biggest signs of a return, but better than nothing.
I think the problem with the TV box is that in 3D it's hard to see what the item is from all angles. Unless they have a 4 sided monitor. Thus, the capsule. Still, I'd love to see a compromise. Like a 4 sided TV as mentioned or something else.
edit:
like this:
Sorta like a hybrid of the SA1 box and the classic Sonic 1 box.
-
I don't feel the need to bring back the old TV boxes... In Sonic Adventure they had those glass-like things you break that contain 10 rings, sheilds etc and I think it worked better then TVs.
Having 4 sided tvs seems a bit... clumsy
-
I never really thought about it that way. I always thought those baloon looking glassy boxes looked stupid. But now I realise that it is because in 3d you cannot view the item from every angle.
Hmmm... well tbh I don't see a problem in only being able to see the item from one angle :p. I would be perfectly fine with them. Eggman/Robotnik monitors would finally have some merit to them
-
The problem is that it would be counter productive to the flow of the gameplay, I dont want to have to walk around the object to see what is in it... I want to see it and know, so I can make the decission to get it or not.
Don't get so wrapped up in wanting things so 'retro sonic' that you're prepared to go back to silly design choises that don't work in 3D.
Sometimes there is a GOOD reason to progress the series, I never really 'got' the TV boxes or why anyone cares so much about them anyway.
-
Who puts those boxes there, anyway? I mean, if Eggman does, why benefit Sonic? Clearly, he has Eggman boxes, so why not have ALL the boxes be Eggman boxes?
I always thought it would be neat if certain badniks could use items in boxes. Think you're running up to a box, when a motobug starts to near an item box with a shield. If you don't hit the box before he reaches it, he gets the shield and in turn requires two hits.
edit:
Roller would be perfect for this. Dude rolls into the screen, attempts to bop the item box, and then rolls off.
-

Yeah the boxed tv's were reimagined as 3D Glass Projections. But they've been removed now thanks to Unleashed/Colors.
I hate numbered rings, cause that just makes them coins from Mario. The whole point of rings is that they are hollow!
-
Don't get so wrapped up in wanting things so 'retro sonic' that you're prepared to go back to silly design choises that don't work in 3D.
That's how I feel about Unleashed and Colors. Only problem is their 2D sections suck. Sonic can't even look up or down, doesn't even have a falling off the edge animation.
I am sorry, but I just really hate Unleashed and Colors.
-
Despite that downside to Unleashed and Colors (not looking up and down) they are far far better and far more playable than any main series Sonic title released between 2005 and 2007. Here's hoping Sonic Anniversary remedies those small problems. Why not have the right stick to look up and down? I believe this is how Splosion Man operates.
-
I can appreciate the third redesign of the Sonic series from Unleashed and onward, but it really does bug me how it does not really feel like the same series anymore. I enjoyed Colors and Unleashed enough, but I have a hard time getting excited for whatever is next. Colors especially has some of the worst replay value in a console Sonic game in a long time. I have never gotten bored of a Sonic game so fast in my life, the content was really lacking. Wisps were pretty creative, but nothing Kirby has not done before really. I would just prefer the days where he had all of the moves from the start and would like to stay away from "Magic Hand" territory.
As for the monitors, I understand the change, but the item monitors made sense, they were another invention by Robotnik who would just make weird random crap. Now they are just random bubbles that serve as another awkward thing in the series. It is not really broken or anything though.
I do not think it is really all that necessary to have them bubbles anymore either really. Colors was mostly in a 2D setting and every 3D section was pretty straightforward with no real camera control. They could just have the monitors facing your direction, not a big deal.
And not sure what Sharky meant by classic things might be awkward in 3D. The only thing that I could see being a hassle is getting momentum and rolling to work right again, but Sonic Team does not even know he can roll anymore.
EDIT: One of the biggest unsung problems with the newer Sonic games is that Sonic is just too damn small in the 2D sections. Fix that please.
-
I noticed that in watching playthroughs of Colors. You'd think with the game being in 3D, they could have a camera option for the 2D sections, like close, medium and far. I was impressed by how Sonic Adventure DX had two camera options. Neither were amazing, but it was nice to have a choice.
Scope out this comparison. Compared to Sonic 4, 2D sections in Colors make Sonic itty bitty:
Also, the HUD in Sonic 4 is superior in my opinion.
-
And not sure what Sharky meant by classic things might be awkward in 3D.
...The TV boxes?
They would be counter productive in 3D, you need to be able to see the item box from all angles... It would be annoying to have to walk around the item box to find the front to know if I want to pick it up or not. How can I be more clear?
As for Sonic Colours vs Sonic 4 when it comes to the camera, I found Sonic Colours could have been a little bit closer in some sections but I felt Sonic 4 was far, far to close... You can only see a few feet infront of you.
-

To me and those who I play with, we find 06 waaaaay better than anything released after it. I think what destroyed 06 were the bugs and load times had they been absent it would've been worlds better than Colors/Unleashed based on level design alone.
Massive stages, open ended explore to your heart out.
[youtube:1qgisakb]7HjPgL3t5AU[/youtube:1qgisakb]
Unleashed: Just press the boost button and the level will finish it self for you, all you have to do is tap the direction pad or jump once in a while. And to give the illusion of challenge we'll litter the levels with enemies that don't even damage you if you run in to them directly (without boost) but if you run at them with boost they'll die :S.
Colors lacks bugs and is better than Unleashed in every way but it is the most regressed Sonic game of all time as well. With a World Map that pales in comparison to Super Mario World and invisible Walls that would put Naughty Dog's Crash games to shame.
[youtube:1qgisakb]lfSlT8RSbvA[/youtube:1qgisakb]
I rather play Super Mario World: the map is a million times better than Colors. I hounestly thing they used Mario as a bases for Colors.
[youtube:1qgisakb]_9duLa-mixQ[/youtube:1qgisakb]
I could play PS1 Crash games for my fix of Invisible Walls. The Havoc Physics also appears to be more advanced in this game and it has item boxes :P.
[youtube:1qgisakb]6y_jxuiklRs[/youtube:1qgisakb]
Honestly if the Yuji Naka'sm TGS 05 vision of 06 was fully realized all the games on the list would've been blown out of the water.
-

I already pointed out how it is not necessary to change this stuff any more. If anything, they can make whole sections out of the classic stuff and it would look fine in 3D, just would not play as good most likely.
Despite that downside to Unleashed and Colors (not looking up and down) they are far far better and far more playable than any main series Sonic title released between 2005 and 2007...

I rather play Super Mario World or any game in the PS1 Crash series over Sonic Colors.
Sonic 06 has some of the worst design I have ever seen in any game ever. It was not just bugs and load times, the game was generally bad on almost every front. Even the character models, art and level design have some of the worst in the series, it has the most holes in a Sonic game ever, too. I hate invisible walls in Sonic games, but somethings got to give.
I cannot agree that Colors is better than Unleashed though. It is obvious which one has better design overall, but Colors took out a lot of stuff that should have stayed, like the bumper buttons for quick stepping and ANY replay value outside of [spoiler:15he56rt]Super Sonic[/spoiler:15he56rt].. which barely counts as anything.
-
Updated my previous post with enough references, to finally make 06 the greatest Sonic game of this generation.
Unleashed lost me with the inability to recollect rings after damage, and Colors won me by reintroducing several Sonic traits albeit via the wisps but at least they were back.
-
I get the feeling that cube cares only about Graphics and Storylines in games (or if they are somehow involved with classic Sega developers). Not an insult, but that just seems to be the trend.
Also, I'm with Snaus in that I really have just about zero interest in Sonic whatsoever anymore. I've pretty much lost hope they'll ever make anything I like from the series ever again.
EDIT: That sounds very negative... I should say I'm willing to give the games a shot usually at least. I did play Sonic Colours and don't hate it, just don't think it's anything special either. Sonic 4 I did try the demo, but I have so many problems with that game it hurts to think about it.
I still think that the most awesome thing tehy could do for Sonic's anniversary is get each development team to make one level each with no information about what the others are doing. Just give them the most basic outline possible (this will be a snow level etc) and just let them make a sonic level however they want with whatever graphic style/platforming elements/gameplay they feel like. Get each team (No matter how unrelated to Sonic, so that means Creative Assembly too!) and just let them go nuts and see what comes out.
-

I'll bet if Colors were on the HD consoles, it would have had the far better bumper buttons for quick step. Loved that.

and ANY replay value
WHAT, which Sonic game has better replay then Sonic Colours? The replay in Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 are complete filler crap. Its all 'replay this level now with shitty unsonic like gameplay or complete these silly missions.'
- Sonic colours has the E-S rating system,
- 5 Collectable red rings in each stage that unlock cool levels based on classic Sonic levels.
-Multiple paths that only unlock as you progress and find new wisps making replay very important, in fact one of the beginning levels the first time you play it, its a very short run from start to end but once you re-play it with the whisps you earn later in the game it opens up into a massive level...
-The Egg Shuttle mode for your non-stop play through...
-Online leader boards for score attack
-NOT TO MENTION [spoiler:1lvy4vdj]Super Sonic for the first time in levels, in a 3D Sonic game.[/spoiler:1lvy4vdj]
I really can't think of a 3D Sonic game with BETTER replay value... Only ones like Sonic Adventure DX with crappy filler and characters that have gameplay unsuited to Sonic games.
-
The thing is that sonic adventure 2 does indeed have more replay value then sonic colors. Sonic unleashed as well, but imo their the bad kind of replay value. 100%ing sonic adventure 2 was such a crazy acomplishment that I today can't believe that I would do such a thing, but it was more forced than I was enjoying it. Sonic unleashed... never played it again after first playthrough. It was a bad game, one of the worst imo. No offense to those who like it but.. I really hate the game. From story, to choice of theme, to that fucking chip character and even the gameplay. I could eleborate more on that but that's another subject.
Sonic colors is not the greatest game of all time, not even close. I'd even admit it's average. Compared to games like donkey kong country returns it's clear that more attention and more effort pays off. But it's as simple as this for me. I was enjoying the game literally from beginning to the end. No frustration, no shitty gameplay thrown at me and yeah even some very excellent moments. The medal collecting was optional but yet fun. Getting the emeralds by doing the simple simulator stages(simple but still new and even with some sonic 1 level design references) was optional but yet fun as well. I really like sonic colors in that regard. It is the only 3d sonic game that is solid. There are some of those who prefer sonic unleashed over colors and forget about all the crap unleashed brought with it as well. Werehog, medals and all that shit. Honestly if you ask me, the daytime stages were a mess as well, but the fact they forget about everything else when comparing the two is kinda sad.
It had been a long time but I could finally enjoy a sonic game without forcing myself. They still have a long way to go.. they might even be very close right now as the 20th anniversary comes closer with each day. But colors really brought a lot of hope to me personally after previous disasters and it regained alot of my trust because a lot of the things in colors just scream: "we get it".
Just my personal views on the matter. Oh and it's OST rocks
-
-The Egg Shuttle mode for your non-stop play through...
Wait... WHAT?!
(Looks it up)
Okay, that is insanely cool. That is EXACTLY what I've been wanting to see in a 3D Sonic title. Looking forward to that mode once I get a hold of the game (and console).
-
Oh lol wow, I guess you've missed that.
It's indeed an awesome feature. It's basically the only mode that keeps me replaying the game.. Allthough I expect future sonic's to have more stages so a save feature within a sorta egg shuttle mode would be great! In sonic colors you have to do everything on one playthrough. It takes pretty long. around the average of 3 hours. A skilled player would probably do it in 2.
-
I get the feeling that cube cares only about Graphics and Storylines in games (or if they are somehow involved with classic Sega developers). Not an insult, but that just seems to be the trend.
What feeling? Shouldn't it be a fact echoed in my posts?
I do care about classic Sega Developers, despite losing a lot of employees Sonic Team is still 100% Sega and I love them, they still groom young and fresh developers, and Takashi, Sunoe etc are all fairly old.
I also care a lot about the story line, can you blame me from Sonic 98 - Sonic 06 Story Lines have been an integral part of the game and i'm a fan of that era.
As for graphics I completely disagree, how would I like 06 more than Colors/Unleashed if it was about the graphics? I however do prefer 3D Sonic over 2D for 2 reasons.
- True Sense of Speed.
- Greater Exploration.
I also found Super Mario Bros and Crash PS1 games more fun than the last 2 Sonic games, so again I am not all about graphics.
-
and ANY replay value
WHAT, which Sonic game has better replay then Sonic Colours? The replay in Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 are complete filler crap. Its all 'replay this level now with shitty unsonic like gameplay or complete these silly missions.'
Un-Sonic like? Are you serious? Sonic Colors is literally the most un-Sonic like platformer on any console.
-What about the substories from Unleashed that were based on Yakuza games?
-Mission modes?
-Chaos Emeralds?
-In-level items that increase gameplay (puzzle pieces, medals, character moves, chao stuff) but are not necessary like the wisps.
-Extra characters that actually played differently and did not need to unlock wisps to access 70%+ of the levels?
-Unlockable art, music, and just more overall general features?
Tons of other stuff, notice how I did not mention the dozens of other unique features the other games have.
- Sonic colours has the E-S rating system,
So does every 3D release since Sonic Adventure 2. I will give you that Colors has the best of the ranking system in a long time, but it still has awkward flaws like Unleashed, Shadow and 06 had. They have weird scoring systems that made it easier to get higher ranks in the later levels for just not dying, while some of the earlier ones were fairly challenging (Apotos Act 1 took me a dozen tries to get an S rank, but I got it on the second attempt for Eggmanland, even though I died in it a bunch of times).
Sonic Adventure 2 still has it best, do not play it too fast, be sure to kill all of the robots and pick up as many rings as possible, as well as doing all of the tricks you can. Great design.
-Multiple paths that only unlock as you progress and find new wisps making replay very important, in fact one of the beginning levels the first time you play it, its a very short run from start to end but once you re-play it with the whisps you earn later in the game it opens up into a massive level...
That is one of my complaints. While it is not an issue, it was possible to find anything in any level in stuff like Sonic the Hedgehog 2 without finding new items first.
It is a fairly lame sense of replay value. You should want to replay levels because they are fun, not because the design had purposely locked you out before.
Besides, I think every Sonic game with 3D graphics has had stuff like this, even Sonic R had it.
-Online leader boards for score attack
This was done poorly. Not because of the friend codes, but how you can only update it when the timer says you can, and you have to update your times specifically. It should just put them on your leaderboard once you complete a level.
I doubt most of the people who played the game even knew of this honestly, but it is not a bad feature at all.
- 5 Collectable red rings in each stage that unlock cool levels based on classic Sonic levels.
It adds good replay value, but HOLY SHIT it is such an obvious Mario ripoff. They could have at least made them a different color...
Also, it sucks how when you find these in challenge mode they do not add to your overall total.
But the unlockable levels are literally the worst levels in any Sonic game in years and it makes it all far too obvious that the new gameplay style is hugely inferior to the original Sonic games in so many ways.
-NOT TO MENTION [spoiler:32ec03fn]Super Sonic for the first time in levels, in a 3D Sonic game.[/spoiler:32ec03fn]

[spoiler:32ec03fn]Super Sonic[/spoiler:32ec03fn] breaks the game and always has. I hated playing through saves of Sonic 3 with it on. Nice extra and I am happy they finally added something the fans wanted, but it is really not that big of a deal.
This is the best addition to Colors for sure, but it kind of proves how lame the level diversity and bosses are. Five or six acts for only six worlds... Some of them are really awkwardly short, like there are a few levels where you can already hear the end ring as soon as the level starts, which I think is unacceptable. The biggest reason Sonic the Hedgehog 2 had only two acts each was because they wanted to make more levels overall and thought three acts would get boring... Five or six is the most acts in any game to date I think. Lame.
Another problem is that the scoring system is fairly broken. It is too easy to max out your score half way in with a playthrough. It is not a big deal as this is an extra feature, but they should fix it next time.
- Greater Exploration.
You posted that as your opinion, but it is indeed incorrect. The level placement in some games, like Sonic the Hedgehog 2, CD, 3 and Knuckles have much larger levels based on their layers of platforms. Most 3D Sonic games are straight away paths in the sky. Even the Adventure games were like this, with only very minor breaks in pathways.
Something the first Adventure game has over many newer games in the genre is that with all earlier 3D platformers, they had to use all of the visual assets around level design, unlike stuff like in Sonic Colors where the most interesting parts of the level are in the background - One of my biggest complaints with the newer games.
-
Yeah mine to.

Sonic colors is the best sonic game in over a decade. I am particularly amused by people who prefer games like SA2, Unleashed, and 06(games that had you play as sonic through 1/2 of the game at the MOST) to what is obviously a superior product. I hope the anniversary project is in the same vein as Colors but I am open to changes.

DONE.
Well that's being a bit silly , just to give a few examples
1). Again courier crisis a SEGA game lol
2). These people were brought in to SEGA, they didn't work their way up
3) Sumo also have a close working relationship with Codemasters, infact thier very 1st game was England International Football for Codemasters. Are Sumo a Codemasters In-House or Codemasters Team now
4). So MSG is a NCL game, thanks to the NCL references in the Cube version ?
5). LOL SO SEGA stopped being a SEGA in 1982 when a group of Outside investors bought the group , and SEGA Japan stopped being SEGA Japan in 2004, when again a group of outside investors 100% took over the group
Nice one

2) They were young designers groomed by SEGA, they worked under the likes of Cerny, Naka, Toyoda etc.
3) Sure, why not? I don't know all that much about CodeMaster. But the point is Sumo worked under Mie Kumagi of AM3, Yu Suzuki was still at AM2 around the time SUMO got involved. They've also worked with other legends when it came to SST & SSR, Uchida's Studio made the entire model for Gillius Thunderblade.
So they worked under SEGA for several ports, and they collabrated with the designers for SST, and finally in 2009 they released VT2009 independently.
4) I don't know what MSG & NCL stand for?
5) I got involved in the 90s and what you talking about?
Naka joined SEGA before he even went to uni?

Guys, guys, hey listen, guys; you're all wrong. The only TRUE Sega game is 'Fonz'.
If you disagree you are Nintendo loving scum.
-
It's simpler than all this.
Bayonetta and Vanquish aren't sega games because they weren't developed by sega. Same with the conduit. They're Platinum games and High Voltage games. I'll concede that Creative Assembly, now that they are owned by sega, are now sega developers. But it feels wrong to label a franchise that they've developed long before sega came around as a "sega game through and through."

well, i enjoyed that half in Unleashed way more than Colors. i don't care about the other half that much as long as the gameplay and the stages design in Unleashed are the best thing that SONIC TEAM could ever came up with.
to clarify more if i would rate the day time part in sonic unleashed i would give it a 9 and i am serious here, but no way for Colors to receive the same appreciation.
and i feel the anniversary project will not disappoint me by adding power-up system, so i am expecting something as great/better than unleashed

I really don't get how so many people enjoyed Sonic Unleashed!
The night levels were the most terrible thing in a Sonic game in years and the day levels barely played like a Sonic game at all... There is nothing 'Sonic' about rushing through long, levels at break neck speed with little in the way of platforming.

no Sharky you are wrong ... totally wrong about the day levels
in Unleashed the stages built around many gameplay elements that fits with a speedy action platformer, you have jumping , quick stepping , sliding , drifting , boosting , stomping etc ... all works great and the flow of the game is just fantastic and above all that you have tons of things to discover in each level.
but in the opposite side the flow of the game in colors was terrible IMO, the game feels a little bit different than what a sonic game should deliver, some of the levels were amazing but not as amazing as the levels in unleashed not even close (not to mention how small it is in comparison), even abilities invented in Unleashed like quick step and the drift works absolutely awful in colors, the exploration in colors almost depends entirety on the new power-up system which was a bit off for a sonic game.
i am fine with colors, actually it's a pretty good game! but i look at it as spin off for change.
also i am not saying that the game lost everything the franchise known for but of course somethings feels off about it.
about the night levels as i said it doesn't matter that much for me as long as i am having a blast with the day time levels. but i am sure the werehog is far a way from been the worst thing that ever happened to sonic in the last years, there are far far worse things happened to the franchise.

I complety agree. Sonic Unlashed was bloody brilliant imo. _let down by a lack of polish and piss poor Hub system
-
I have to disagree with the praise for Unleashed. I found it tolerable with some moments of good game shining through what was overall a pretty poor game. The night-time levels were horrendous for the most part, and the daytime levels could be pretty hit or miss too. Some were very fun and others were just rubbish IMO. Not to mention some stuff that is just irrefutably bad, like the QTE segments and moments that required trial and error to safely get through.

Way it works for me is I flip the game box in the air. If it lands front side up, it's a great SEGA game. If it lands back side down its a shitty third party game, and if it lands on the spine (a rarity) it's a triple-A Yu Suzuki game.

^This is the feeling I took away from Sonic Colours, It had all of those things and more.
Whilst Sonic Unleashed had those things the main aim of the game was to speed through the levels at a break neck speed, boosting as much as possible and everything else kept to a minimum...
The most impressive thing about Sonic Unleashed, by far is the engine itself. The gameplay felt barebone...
The DLC for Sonic Unleashed was much better then the original levels imo even though they were put togeather cheaply the design was more challenging and less speed focused.
but in the opposite side the flow of the game in colors was terrible IMO, the game feels a little bit different than what a sonic game should deliver, some of the levels were amazing but not as amazing as the levels in unleashed not even close.
I disgaree, the unleashed levels are far better in terms of graphics, engine, draw distance etc... But level design and inventive gameplay took a massive back seat in Unleashed compared to Colours.
Even abilities invented in Unleashed like quick step and the drift works absolutely awful in colors, the exploration in colors almost depends entirety on the new power-up system which was a bit off for a sonic game.
Fine by me, the powers pretty much gave Sonic Colours the depth 3D Sonic games have been missing for years.

There is far to much werehog shit in the game to simply ignore, it takes up more then half of the experience and lasts a lot longer... If Sonic Unleashed was just the Sonic levels then I think it could be compared to Sonic Colours but it isnt, it's more then 50% werehog and so more then 50% terrible.
-
I've been playing Unleashed recently for the 360, been trying to complete the game. I did complete the PS2 version in '08, but have been playing the 360 one on and off since '09. There are definitely spans when the game is amazing, such as when you get to play a few Sonic day stages in a row followed by a boss, but then that god damn werehog appears and I put the game on hold for a month, waiting for a day where I'll have 45 minutes to burn so I can make it through one or two werehog stages.
The latest stretch I've played was Adabat day, followed by the Adabat boss, Tornado Defense Act 2 and then Eggmanland. From the beginning of Adabat day up to the first werehog segment of Eggmanland, it was great!
What am I getting at? Nothing. Just thought I'd share.
-
If you count playtime instead of how many stages, the werehog takes the largest portion of the game. It'd be something like 65% werehog 35% day.

I mean, if you even had the endurance to get through the werehog levels to begin with sure. Keep in mind that the average gamer isn't going to muscle through them. For the record, I don't hate unleashed. I think it was a step in the right direction design wise and was prettying visually amazing. I really enjoyed playing through the apostos and mazuri day stages. I think if the rest of the speed stages had been at that same level of quality, I might be agreeing with you right now.
-
but then there is a huge re-playability in sonic levels while the werehog levels designed to be played once
Yeah that's true, but it's still forced at first playthrough. Kinda tedious playing a sonic game where the core gameplay takes less of the game. I really don't like the concept of just going fast in sonic games. I like having to stop and think sometimes too. A good balance between the 2 has always been in the classics as well, but colors brought it back finally.
@radrappy
It's funny how you only like the easier stages, cuz that is like the whole problem of the game. The game does get challenging, but the gameplay mechanic doesn't allow real difficulty but only trial and error. It's because the game is just simply too fast and the controls aren't tight enough. You cannot die from simple enemy hazards, they are there for just preventing your S ranks. Actual . Only way to make it more challenging is by botomless pits. Anyone may have noticed that from the first stage, the whole game is surounded by them, which is so damn frustrating. Nobody likes to get killed when you're really trying to get better at the game but the game doesn't allow you to because it delibiratly kills you.
It's basically sonic rush in 3d because sonic rush shares the exact same problems. A botomless pit coming out of nowhere will kill you unless you don't boost, but if you don't boost, some redundant enemy placed along the way will hit you as well. So you pick, get hit and frustrated by hazards, or let the botomless pit get you. It's just simply bad game design imo, and a great portion of fans seem to have aknowledged it. I just cannot have fun when a game is designed to delibiratly kill me. A game should be built in a way that you get rewarded for your skill as you progress.
-
yeah apart from the two stages I mentioned, the speed stages aren't much fun. I was always being wowed by the lighting/environments but jesus were they a pain to play. There was a nice bit in mazuri that had sonic traveling in what was essentially a loop that would dump you back to earlier in the loop if you missed a jump. This is a good example of difficulty that's more encouraging than it is frustrating. A player should never be punished with death for not knowing the layout of a level.
-
Not replying to anybody, just thinking aloud:
I found Unleashed to be a far better game once completed and all stages were unlocked, or at the very least everything was completed up until Eggmanland. I've just reached Eggmanland, and found that the game is far better now that I am able to jump around between day stages, playing the ones I enjoy. Also, I can finally play all the the DLC stages which are, as Sharky said, better than some of the on-disc stages. Even though I'm only replaying 30% of the total game plus DLC, at least I'm enjoying a solid chunk of stages that are equitable to the amount in SA2.
It's just a shame that one has to play through most of the game, putting up with the 30+ minute werehog stages and the tedious medal collecting, in order to reach that ideal spot where you can basically level select the good stuff and play the DLC.
Some could also argue that Sonic Advenure 1&2 are better games once you have all the Sonic stages available, as you can just play through the trial menu of SA1 or jump around the map of SA2 playing Sonic/Shadow. However, I think that unlike Unleashed, the non-Sonic segments of SA1 and 2 are so short that even if you're hating on having to play as Big, Amy or E-102, their stories could probably be beaten in the same amount of time that it takes to complete three of the longer werehog stages. Same goes for SA2, I don't recall the treasure hunting stages or mech shooters taking all that long before the next Sonic/Shadow stage hit.
Long point I think I'm getting at: Sonic Colors seems to be, based on how much I've played so far, the FIRST 3D Sonic game where what I'm playing in the main game is all of the same content that I could see myself returning to once completing the game. No stage or act looks to be non-Sonic filler that I play through just to get to play the upcoming Sonic stage.
-
Just tell me this... what are you supposed to do in the damn simulation stages?
I never got them?
-
Run to the goal ring, just as you would a normal Sonic stage. You can play as 1 player, switching between the blue and the red Sonic if you'd like (though I didn't see a reason to in the early acts, perhaps later puzzles require it). Or you can play as 1.5 players (I assume thats with an AI controlled second player) or 2 players.
Layouts are inspired by Sonic 1 maps, there are three acts per colored emerald zone. Game starts off with one act available in each, additional acts are unlocked by collecting the red rings in the main stages. Collect all red rings = all Sonic Sim acts are unlocked. Complete all Sonic Sim acts = collect all Chaos emeralds = Super Sonic.
So basically, Sonic Simulator is the special stage of the game.
-
Those stages were really weird, and we didn't know what we were doing.
It was so unclear are we fighting each other, are we doing co-op. The few stages I played the Co-op didn't make any sense it wasn't like you needed the other players help.
I was playing with my 14, 11, and 10 your cousins and we were all confused.

One of the reasons the night stages are so long partially comes from the fact that you're at low stats at first, and the battles take so long to complete because of that.
-
I found the werehog level up system on the WiiS2 version to be far better than the HD version.
-
On a side note, Sonic Unleashed was revealed on April 3rd 2008 and Sonic Colors was revealed on May 20-something 2010.
My guess is that that major Sonic title might see an announcement soon.
Sooner, if there is a leak, of sorts.
Sega's been awfully quite about the future of the Sonic 4 episodic series.
-
My guess is Sonic Anniversary/Generations announcement this month or next and Sonic 4 Episode 2 announcement in June. Probably an October release or Sonic 4 and a November release for Sonic Anniversary.
-

Told ya.

SEGA's facebook says announcement is this Thursday.
-
GameInformer will reveal its next issue's Cover on Thursday as well (Though it is said to be a sequel to a Highly Anticipated game from 2010, probably Mass Effect 3... or hopefully Bayonetta 2!)
-
The best thing Colors did was have no introduction. As soon as you press start the game begins.
Unleashed was a mess of a game, but I enjoy it a lot more for a lot of reasons I have seen have already been mentioned here. Some reasons not pointed out are how the controls are much better on the HD releases than Colors, which would change based on your perspective... Such a bad idea for a kids game.
Colors is the first 3D Sonic game since Sonic Adventure 2 that I believe is unarguably good. Not great, but good. Nothing in particular about it is awful or done particularly poorly whereas I enjoy Unleashed more, I could talk about it's issues for hours.
But like with pretty much all side games, Colors is fairly forgettable (notice how people never talk about it anymore already) and just does not share a similar scope to the other releases. Sonic Unleashed was the last platformer I had played for months just because there was so much content overall. If you get rid of the frustration, add in better level design (some of the level mechanics used in every Sonic games for years just are not working and need to go) and bring in rolling and art direction similar to Sonic Adventure 1 and the original trilogy, I would really be happy, even if I know it could never be the same quality of the games I just mentioned.
-

Check out the comments for this article. Apart from some guy named Billy, everyone acknowledges that colors was a decent game. This is the kind of positive reception we haven't seen follow the sonic franchise around in a decade. All thanks to Sonic Colors. So basically, you're wrong.
Also, it's not a side game.

I've had the Sonic Facebook page and the Sonic Stadium speculation thread open on my computer since yesterday, lol.
Yeah, I'm excited. I'm hoping that it's the big 3D game and not Sonic 4 Episode 2. I look forward to S4E2, but am not in need of a trailer.

BRAND NEW TRAILER COMING TOMORROW ONLY ON SONIC'S FACEBOOK! Be sure to come back tomorrow to check it out!
can't wait
hopefully it's the anniversary project

Radrappy and George are being dinguses.
Constantly saying I like it and that it is the highest quality 3D Sonic game in years is disliking? Just because I prefer Unleashed does not change anything, as much as you guys want to fight.
I just said people do not talk about it much anymore. Obviously a site with Sonic in the title is going to talk about the game, that is like saying you are surprised people on a Star Wars fansite are talking about that the Clone Wars cartoon.
In comparison, people talk way more about Sonic the Hedgehog 4, for better and worse.

@Uranus
Radrappy showed a link to Kotaku(not a sonic website) with news unrelated to colors. The article mentioned colors itself as being well received by fans and critics and the comment section agreed mostly.
Colors isn't quickly forgotten. Usually when things are decent, positive or okay theres not really much to say. You should have seen reactions at Neogaf, which were basically considered as the biggest whiners in the gaming community. They loved it for the most part as well.
It's usually the crap games that are most memorable for making big waves of complaints and emotional reactions. Same thing goes for Top notch quality games. Sonic colors is okay and that's just what it is. There's nothing to complain about, but also nothing to shout and scream the roof off.
But even though all of the above, it does get mentioned alot as proof sonicteam still got what it takes. It's also used as proof of that the more classic orientated gameplay works better than the rush as it has gotten alot more recognition by fans, non fans and critics. I have noticed lately that sonic unleashed is usually liked by those who like the sonic rush games for the most part. Sonic colors is hated by those who dislike "sonic 1". The same fans that dislike colors wii, actually love colors DS. It is a great minority though.
There are also some silly HD whores but I think they're not really worth it to talk about.
I may be generalizing a bit, but it's how I sorta analyzed the opinions throughout the fanbase.

Sonic colors is hated by those who dislike "sonic 1".
Yep. The people who swear by SA2, Sonic 06, and shadow the hedgehog HATE Colors. They happen to be the same people who usually don't like the Genesis games.

I need a countdown lol. How many hours is this gonna take guys? I need to know hours because when it's up it should be up for everyone!!
-
I'm just going to flat out tell everyone that it is very likely to be the Sonic 4 Episode 2 trailer and not the Anniversary game.
Not that I've been told anything or know any secrets but I very much doubt that the Anniversary game will be announced and shown on the Sega of America facebook page exclusively.
The SoA team has a lot more say in how Sonic 4 Episode 1 was handled so I suspect S4E2 will be the same.

12 hours in 30 mins.

Hey look, everybody, it's chubby Sonic! Haven't seen him in years...
-
Folks on Sonic Stadium are already whining about lack of Wii version.
Seriously, what the fuck. (A)Sonic Colors released last November, great game and an exclusive, (B)A 360 is so freakin affordable, (C)What the fuck is wrong with people, who owns a Wii but no HD console?, (D)People honestly expected Sonic Team to simultaneously develop Colors AND a Wii version of Sonic Anniversary AND an HD version?
-
i am really really curious about the gameplay system.
i think they will go with different mechanics for each SONIC.
classic sonic with classic gameplay style and moves like spin-dash.
modern sonic with Unleashed style and abilities like homing attack.
this is brilliant!
-
That could be the case, Suzuki. My guess is, around 10 classic stages remixed in 3D with the ability to play as either Classic or Modern Sonic. I'd also love to see Knuckles and Tails. And both Eggmen teaming up, that would make for some great cutscenes.
-
I would be disappointed if that was the case, I want some consistency in the gameplay.
-
SEGA BETTER TITLE THE GAME SONIC ADVENTURE 3!!!!!!!111
-
*Must...get...a...PS3*
Well, this is perfect timing for me, my brother is planning to buy an HDTV later this year (we only have SDTVs here at my home ._.), having an HDTV without a Blu-Ray player would be a waste (especially because I can count with my fingers the number of HD TV channels we have here), so, instead of getting just a Blu-Ray player, I'll buy a PS3. :>
-
Smart move. Yeah, I'm stoked. This is the first time since Sonic Heroes that I've owned the console that a main series Sonic game has been announced for. Didn't have a Wii when Colors hit, didn't have a 360 when '06 and Unleashed hit.
-
Well I'm super fucking excited by this. I already own a ps3 but I might get a 360 just to play the version of this that runs best.
-
Haha man, I had been whining like a bitch for almost a year about that model. I gave it all up finally and there he is...
What a moment.
This is such a beautiful gesture from SEGA. All the fans that had been telling me that it's never gonna happen can go suck it right now. Hard!
-
I made this for the fun of it:

I think the game is going to be a lot of fun! Lighthearted tone, lots of retro nods, possibly an interesting (though not deathly serious) story. SOme of my personal wishes are:
-3D Angel Island
-Knuckles and Tails playable
-Remixed music
-Online 2 player mode (a la Sonic Simulator in Colors)
-Summer release date
-
Don't think it'll be released in the Summer, somewhere around September and December is more likely.
Hopefully they don't rush it like 06...heh...I think they've learned their lesson. :P
It's not like 06 would have been much better even if it was not rushed anyway. xD
-
I'd assume this was in the works since '08, so they should have had more than enough time. I think September makes sense and is realistic, but summer would be better :)
That or Sonic 4 in summer, Anniversary in winter.
It just bugged me last year that Sonic 4, Colors and Free Riders all released within 2 months.

Check out this tubedub, the music actually really suits the trailer (though the drums aren't great): http://tubedubber.com/#JbGEzP01tkM:UZUh ... :11:0:true (http://tubedubber.com/#JbGEzP01tkM:UZUhZ7P3H4Y:0:100:11:0:true)

Classic sonic's back bebbeh.
-
I'm glad when they made the classic Sonic model they didnt give him that weird rounded head design from Sonic 1 and Sonic 3... You know where it seems to round off and then have a row of three spikes down the centre... It looks terrible.
I'm glad they used the best classic version from Sonic CD/Sonic the Fighter.
Also, while I'm totally glad they brought back this old design I actually really like both designs... So thats fine with me.
-
The classic model looks so much better IMO. Why couldn't they just allow you to unlock it in Sonic 4?
-
Classic model looks kind of weird to me, not sure what it is. No idea why they could not have just used it in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I. The newer fans do not even like that model, so why wait for the next normal console release?
I like both designs honestly, I just do not like it when parts of him are extra long, like in Sonic 06 or Sonic Rush. Also was a nice touch where their animations are different, could be cool.
As for no Wii version. I am kind of confused. I assume they will get like a smaller version or something, but if that were the case they could just have put the logo in there too...
Lack of rolling scares me, why not roll instead of slide? His spikes are facing the opposite direction anyways, it makes no sense!
Food for thought. Even though I hate SatAM, I am not completely against the concept of a Sonic game like that Spider-Man game that came out recently where it shifts between different universes, like Noir, 2099, Ultimate, etc. I think I could really get into something like that with Sonic, like if one level was based on Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog with Jaleel White voicing him, or one was like City Escape or something with Ryan Drummond. I dunno, it could scare away so many fans, but I think it could be cool.
