So, uh, it appears there are rumors of a new Nintendo console coming in 2012.
Obligatory link: http://wii.ign.com/articles/116/1161875p1.html (http://wii.ign.com/articles/116/1161875p1.html)
What does everyone think?
-
It sounds pretty exciting, can't wait for E3.
-
I think someone should do a an article called 'Sega did it first' Becuase these shitty companies aren't even trying anymore.
A screen on the controller you can play games on? Bitch please!

-
Microsoft tested a screen on the controller for the original Xbox, but they said most people did not like it, and that it was only useful for things like card games when playing with multiple people.
I could see this mechanic working with Nintendo's mentality though. Anyone who has properly played games like Four Swords Adventures or Pac-Man Vs knows how awesome it really is, but getting it all set up is such a massive struggle...
I am entirely certain Nintendo are going to make a new console and reveal it soon, all of it just makes so much sense.
Hardware sales are completely stalled, 3rd parties are abandoning Wii and DS because unknown IPs just do not sell, even Nintendo themselves are pretty much stopping releases on stuff like the Virtual Console.
I honestly believe they are shooting themselves in the foot though. Every time a big company launches into first place and basically "Prints money" for themselves, they go nuts with it all and everything collapses around them.
Whatever this next platform is, I dunno if I will be getting it and I have no idea how it will ever be anywhere near as popular as Wii or DS has become. I am a huge fan of Nintendo as hard as it is to believe sometimes, but the things they have done lately just drive me crazy.
How do you feel about this Barry? You just bought Wii!
-
Every Nintendo console post SNES has gone the same way, a year or two later the line up is thin, long periods of the year there is nothing but causal games and movie games, all the good third parties go else where.
I'll probably never buy a Nintendo console until the end of its life time again. That said maybe it is time to finally buy a Wii of my own and all 10 great games it has on the cheap.

SEGA almost always does stuff first, that's why they are amazing.
-
Honestly all of the innovations this gen were done by Sega over a decade ago...
-XBLA and PSN? ... DreamArena! Sega did it first!
-DLC? ... Sega Channel! Sonic Adventure 2, Skies of Arcadia! Sega did it first!
-Motion Controller? ... Samba Maraccas and Fishing Rod, Sega did it first!
-Control with your body? ... Sega Activator, Sega did it first!
-Screen on the controller? ... Yeah...
Console advances in the last 10 years are still catching up with Sega...
-
Wouldn't surprise me if they had something in the pipeline soon, since the Wii is starting to get stale. Their own games are still big sellers, but things are really drying up compared to what it used to be.
Will be interesting to see what, if anything comes of this.
-

GOLD!
I have always believed what you just said but SONY probably disagrees with you while every company prior to SONY went bezerk and self destructed after hitting #1.
Sony survived self destruction, the PS3 launch was a disaster.
Extermination of backward compatability, insanely high prices, loses long time exclusives (Tekken, Final Fantasy), yet they still survived and won over every one.
If only SEGA acted the same way with the Saturn (Asshole Stolar gave up on it to soon), we'd be playing Evolution instead of Revolution.
-
I really doubt the Saturn had a chance in hell, if they didn't give up on it Sega would likely be dust by now.
-
I'll pick it up because it'll have Zelda on it.
In the meantime I don't really think the rumours are much to get all worked up over. There won't be any definite answers until E3, and it's not exactly news that a new console would probably be coming out this year. I mean look at the schedule for Wii releases this year.
-
How do you feel about this Barry? You just bought Wii!
Ha! Yeah, I knew somebody would mention that. Naw, I'm not bothered at all. I have never ever been one to buy a Nintendo console at launch, let alone within the first 5 years. Bought an NES in 2002, a GBA in 2009 and a Wii this month. Should the console hit in the next year, I still would have Wii titles to catch up with and would have no interest in first party Nintendo titles.
I actually find the rumored Wii 2 to be sort of stupid. I mean, they say it will either be as powerful as a 360 or a bit more powerful than a PS3. Wow, way to go Nintendo. You've matched the current HD consoles in power and it only took 6 years. What more, even if people buy into the Wii 2 in late 2011/early 2012, both MS and Sony will release new consoles come 2014/2015. So the Wii 2 would be 2-3 years old and already the weakest console of the three. It would be the current generation all over again!
Personally, come 2012 I'd much rather buy a PS3 for a great price than buy into a new Nintendo console at what could be triple the cost. Yakuza, Ico trilogy and Uncharted or more Mario, Zelda, etc.? I'd go with PS3. Also, I doubt we'd have a solid library of SEGA titles until late 2012/2013 and even then, many would probably be multiplatform what with an HD Wii 2 being easier to port over to (just a guess).
Anyway, I think Nintendo is too late to the party. Whatever a Wii 2 does better than the PS3/360, an eventual PS4/720 will surly clobber it. I also bet that the PS4/720 will support both Move and Kinect, thus ensuring that owners of those respective devices will migrate to the next platform. So I can't see dedicated PS3/360 owners jumping ship for Wii 2 when the next console is just a few years out.
-
I think it would be a shame if it didn't have GameCube BC as well.
-
This new Nintendo console is starting to sound like a certain final SEGA console... but not for all the good reasons.

Here I thought I lived in the past.
I got a PS2 in 05/06 and I still have a ton of games to catch up on (Sonic Heroes, Blood Will Tell, Altered Beast and so on).
NES in 2002 damn, that doesn't even sound like fun anymore. 2002!!! That's post Dreamcast those games would be shitty and unplayable. I find it hard to enjoy several Genesis games in this day and age while Sonic is amazing, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Shinobi really show there age in terms of graphics.

Like Barry I never buy Nintendo consoles until many years after launch...
I'd say if there is one thing that can be said for all Nintendo consoles post SNES is that by the middle of the second year the line up is barron as shit.
It's better to wait until the console goes down in price and you can pick up all the good games at a low price.
If it's anything like the Wii every mother and child you know will own one anyway so you wont go with out.
-
Yeah but Barry waits like 20 years after it is discontinued to get it.
-
I bought a Wii at launch and don't regret my decision one bit.
-
Yeah but Barry waits like 20 years after it is discontinued to get it.
For the NES, there was one at my Grandma's house (it was my uncle's console), our family cabin and my best friends house, so I really had no reason to buy one. I played a good deal of the games between '89 and '95, just not on my own machine. Though when I did buy one, it was the garage sale deal of the century: $25 for an NES, two controllers and 10 games all near mint in box including both Zelda titles, Metroid, Double Dragon and Heavy Barrel.
Anywho, I wasn't really living in the past. Outside Nintendo consoles, I've bought every SEGA console since the Genesis near launch (Saturn 2 years after lunch), PS2 6 months after launch and XBOX one year after launch. When "Summer of Shadow" happens at my place this summer, people will see all the consolez I have and they can play all the sweet Shadow the Hedgehog games. It'll be a blast.
-
Hack the system Barry, pirate everything to get revenge on Nintendo.
-
Will do! Ya harr matey!
Does anybody else see the many Dreamcast similarities?
• Releasing as the first of a new generation, possibly 3 years before the competition (1998 Dreamcast, 2000 PS2 and 2012 Nintendo, 2015 PS3/720)
• As such, becoming the weakest console of the next generation
• Screen in controller gimmick (VMU, anybody?)
• Big selling point would be to see flagship platforming icon in a shiny new game (Sonic in 3D, Mario in HD)
• Would lose sales to those waiting for the next Playstation (and the XBOX)
• Might not play the latest in video disc (DVD for Dreamcast, Blu-ray for Nintendo) while the competition will
Biggest difference is that the Dreamcast was a huge step up from the PS1 and N64, whereas I just cannot see what draw the next Nintendo console will have aside from Nintendo franchises in HD.
As of now, I challenge Nintendo to surprise the hell out of me.
-
Another big difference is that Nintendo is coming off possibly the greatest success story in video games with Wii/DS and has goodwill up the arse, whereas Sega was coming off the biggest flop that ever flopped with Saturn and pissed off everyone in the world.
-
True, though do you think Nintendo would find success in moving from family friendly Wii to a more HD "hardcore" machine? Unless their aim is HD family friendly hardcore... stupid video games and their target markets.
-
Why bother to compare it to a SEGA console? The fact remains it is not a SEGA console, it is a Nintendo console thus it will be like other Nintendo consoles. Release dates don't matter. SEGA is SEGA, Nintendo will not achieve this greatness ever. They are too busy doing the same thing for the last 25 years and not evolving.
As for Wii 2 news:
Even if the 'GPU' is this fast, there are other things to consider before you say 'x is faster than x'. Ram and CPU will matter most. Its like 3DS, when they showed GPU tests before launch they had some 'PS3 like' titles with the 'Resident Evil' demo... then the game came out and it looked shit.
We shall see.

Don't see how most other major publishers are any better or worse then they are.

What you babbling about?
I am no Nintedo fan but you have to give credit where credit is due!
Nintendo is an evolutionary company just look at their controllers.
Where as SEGA basically copied the Nes controller and then kept on adding buttons to it.
The Saturn Controller was a genesis controller with the trigger buttons Snes introduced.
Their N64 and Gamecube controller may have been extremely bad but they were original and innovative adding to evolution.
Even SEGA legends like Yu Suzuki have taken cues from Nintendo calling Psy-Phi the SEGA DS.
Look I am not pushing SEGA down here, I've just taken one variable in the video game industry and have shown that Nintendo has always evolved in that realm and not just with hardware but with innovative hardware.
-
Every videogame company has innovated at some point or another but Sega were really pushing it.
Everything 'original' about this GEN was introduced by Sega.
- XBLA/PSN? ... The Sega Dream Arena was free and could browse the net freely.
- Screens on controllers? Pah-Leez Nintendo. I had that over a decade ago! Yes I could take it around with me, yes I could play games on it and yes I could even swap Save Deta with my friends whilst at school!
- Motion controllers? Fishing Rod and Maracas, sure they did it wrong by making it game specific but the idea was there.
- DLC? Sonic Adventure 2, JSR, Skies of Arcadia... and it was completely free. Not to mention the so ahead of it's time it still shocks me 'Sega Channel'.
-Dedicated Server games on console! PSO! (Nintendo is still struggling to have a good online service...)
-The Game Gear was amazing, battery life sucked but it had a back lit screen and full colour way before Nintendo.
Lets not forget the Arcade scene, Sega had so many firsts in the arcades that have crept into main stream gaming and are now taken for granted, it's not even funny!
I think I could go on and on and on about things Sega did to revolutionize gaming… They were way ahead of their time in many respects.
-
Most of the things you mentioned already existed before Nintendo or SEGA.
SEGA just brought some to consoles.

That's what Sharky is saying I think. SEGA brought those innovations to the gaming world.

Don't forget the active shutter 3D lenses for the Master System

Though didn't the power glove operate on finger movement rather than free movement through space? So it was more like a glorified button connected to each finger.
This on the other hand:
Maracas are the most apt comparison to the Wii controls, as they're infrared based. Fishing controller, not so much, but it did have the tilt and shakin' controls like the Wii does.

So...
That's exactly the point.
If we are going to play by those rules then nothing creative or innovative have ever come from consoles. Screens with controllers attached have existed for years and years.
In fact, can't you plug one model of the PSP into the PS3 and use it as a controller/play the games on the TV?
-
You can stream the game from the PS3 to the PSP and play it anywhere there's a wireless signal. Only a few games do this though.

I'm curious to see how this is gonna be.

It's starting to sound like the console acts as an OnLive box that allows you to play games via the controller. So the TV is off or in use, and the player is in another room of the house playing a streamed game. Sounds... interesting, but hardly a "OMFG I NEED THAT!" selling point for me personally.

More rumors:

Exclusive to Loading reveals a source close to Nintendo all the company's upcoming console.
On the 7th June, unveiling the world is waiting. Nintendo will unveil its new console at E3 in Los Angeles. But even now could Loading reveal one of the hottest - and most credible - rumors we have heard about the machine. This is all we got to know about Nintendo Feel.
Our source, who has a position close to the company, talks about the console in a conversation with Loading. We choose to present the information that we got it, untranslated and unedited.
- Nintendo Wants to change the way we play - again. The success of the Wii was proof Essentially thats the controller is everythin bit as important as graphical technology. When Nintendo unveils ITS next piece of hardware on June 7 th , the presentation Will Be as much about the feel, as the look, the ITS of new games. The revolutionary aspect goodwill once again ask the controller found in Itself.
After Touch will Feel
We have already heard that Nintendo will develop a controller with built-in screen. Since the information is leaked, it has drawn parallels to both Apple iPad and how Nintendo used the Game Boy Advance hand control to a few Gamecube games. But the new screen controller has another dimension - convey the sense of touch. Our source using the working title of Nintendo Feel .
- Haptic technology is a form of tactile feedback Used To Simulate the experience of touching Different objects best moments on screen. The player cannabis move Their fingertips across a surface and Clearly Feel the Difference Between Soft, smooth or rugged texture. Electronic companies across the World Have Been Conducting research in this field for years. It's Been That rumored Apple is close to patenting a similar technology, and we've seen the Toshiba demonstration of 'New Sensation UI Solution' That Applies a thin film over a screen in order to Achieve a haptic effect. In Nintendo's case, this is a natural progression of Both the Nintendo DS touch screen & the Wii technology.
Hardcore meets casual
After receiving information about Nintendo Feel from our source, we have been able to confirm that the technology exists. Toshiba demonstration seems to have been presented to the public and we have long had a Novint Falcon at the office. Novint was one of the first companies to seriously introduced the gaming world of haptic feedback.
According to our source, work on the console going on for years, always with the goal of creating an equally direct and easily communicated concept that Wii.
- You Have to try Nintendo Feel to really understand. But the idea Itself is very easy to sell, no matter if You are Aiming for hardcore players or The Wider audience That was first introduced to games through the DS, Wii or Kinect.
And sure, anyone can imagine what the feeling of furry coat against the fingertips would make for Nintendogs. One need not be especially familiar with The Legend of Zelda for the understanding of the fantastic in order to draw patterns in the sand, feel the coolness from the river, burn on lava or perceiving structures of the bark of an old tree.
But at the same time, Nintendo Feel an experience you will not want to explain in words, but just put in the hands of the player. Which probably explains why Nintendo chose to have playable demos at E3, with in June, although the finished console not being launched until 2012.
Any vision of a
Nintendo Feel is in many ways a summary of all the grand visions Nintendo had in the past console generations. Even with the Rumble Pak for Nintendo 64 began giving the player physical feedback through the controls, and in 2006 introduced the concept of "Touch Generations" as a way to market the DS and Wii to a whole new audience. Whether we will see a "Feel Generations" campaign remains to be seen, but it is certain that the new console is an extension of the idea of more intuitive control.
Also resurrects the concept of individual screens "Connectivity" which was launched during the GameCube / Game Boy Advance era, but never got the wide breakthrough Nintendo was hoping for. Our source avsöljar:
- Remember Vitality Sensor? It Will most likely be husband a comeback at this year's E3, though note as a peripheral for Wii, But as a key feature of the Nintendo Feel.

Sega intended Game Gears' successor to have a touch screen, before Game.com, and the Dreamcast fishing controller was motion controlled. Nintendo is often late to the party and often first to be credited for innovations previously applied to gaming by another company.
-
If true, "Feel" is a godawful name. It's not even a name that grows on you. Imagine: "Grand Theft Auto V, now on Playstation 3, 360 and Feel." Just sounds wrong.
Of course, that means it is the name!
-
Kotaku says Nintendo's new console has no HDD. Only 8GB Internal flash storage.
They also said it's a little bit more powerful then 360/PS3.
So there we go. That's Nintendo's strategy. Good luck winning the hardcore, Nintendo, your gonna need it =P
8GB Internal storage is less than the iPhone, FYI.
-
Nintendo Touch would actually make for a good name, but of course Apple already took it. Feel seems like they wanted to go with Touch, but couldn't so they grabbed a thesaurus.
Hopefully the name, and the lack of a HDD, are false rumors for Nintendo's sake.
-
Both the name and the HDD rumor sound too much like Nintendo for it to be false, IMO =P
-
Hopefully they at least know what they're doing.

The reason Nintendo is credited is because they are the first ones to do it right/best/mainstream. I'm probably thinking the fishing controller had no use outside of a certain game.
Edit: PSP and PS3.. hmm. The PSP has less buttons so its already broken from there.. Button combinations to replace missing buttons is such a hassle if you were thinking of that.

The same tech was used in the Maraccas for Samba de Amigo on 'Cast and the fishing controller could be used with a few games, but the most well known other than a fishing game is Soul Calibur.
-
SdA Maracas were 100% compatible with Cool Cool Toon. In fact, SNK intended for them to be used with the game. It actually is a lot of fun, very different from SdA. You use one maraca and grip it with two hands (like a sword) and move it about a circle area to the music.
-
I believe the "Feel" stuff. Mainly because Miyamoto has been saying he has wanted to make a game you could feel for years.
I have also heard of this tech in the past. It was used on steering wheel monitors and similar stuff for personal vehicles, but was unsuccessful because it cost too much money and had no real practical use. I could see this being potentially amazing in games, but having a controller with a wide screen on it sounds damn expensive enough as is... Controllers are already 50 damn dollars, I cannot handle another cent.
I hope they do not use that name though. Wii as a dick joke got so annoying three minutes after they announced the name, I shudder to think how the world would react to "Feel Super Mario".
-
I have no idea why controllers are overpriced. They also usually don't include rechargable batteries. :/
With Cafe, there is a freaking high quality touch screen on the controller! I have a feeling they are going to be quite expensive. ;/

Only way I could see it not sucking so much is if (A) they include two touch screen controllers per console or (B) offer up non-touch screen controllers or allow for use of the Wii classic controller

The problem with the price on the Wii controllers was you were basically paying for two controllers to get the Remote/Nunchuck combo that a lot of games required. (Or at least the ones that interested me) Hopefully Nintendo will be a little more fair with their console's accessories this time around.
