"I graduated with a film degree, but at that time the Japanese film industry was in a shambles and work meant either being an assistant director for TV or a porno director. That's not why I came to Tokyo. I started thinking that video games were really interesting and wanted to make them." - SEGA's Toshihiro Nagoshi
Well, I'm very glad to see that Nagoshi made the decision he did! Now I'm getting weird crossover thoughts of his game ideas in the adult film industry. Super Monkey Balls, anyone?
-
Now that is just sad.
On one hand we have an ungraduated video game coding magician (Naka) on the other hand we have a toasted almost porno director.
Which would you prefer as the head designer at SEGA?
-
I like Nagoshi's games, but he isn't a designer. He is a director and producer.
-
I can imagine it now: This Isn't Ryuga Gotoku XXX!
-

Neither tbh. Naka should have never moved from the R&D and Programing side and I don't think Nahoshi san should have moved from the Arcade side . Would have much rather seen Yoji Ishii , Yu Suzuki or Masayoshi Kikuchi lead the consumer Teams.
It's pretty criminal the way SEGA have treated much less neglected Suzuk-san. I can understand no Shenmue III, but Yu Suzuki got another AAA racer left in him at least
-
Thats the truth, but I don't see why we can't have them all. Why do we need to pick and choose? Nagoshi does some great stuff on his own.
-
We are picking and choosing as out of the old boys only Nagoshi is running around juggling 2 ips with a third one on the way.
Where as Naka's last 2 games weren't even published by SEGA, which is simply WRONG.
So I guess people such as myself who aren't huge fans of Nagoshi kind of start a hate thing towards him cause he's pumping out games at fixed intervals where as others are barely blips on the radar.
-
Naka left SEGA because he didn't want to handle a big studio, which Nagoshi has no problem in doing. Just different mindset. Why are you blaming SEGA for this?
You are acting like SEGA sat down and said "Yu Suzuki, fuck off because we like brown man better". Diffrent teams etc.
Nagoshi took a long time to get where he is. Instead of being a douche bag and crying about Naka, maybe you should consider why he is where he is.
-
So what happend to all the other heads?
Makato Uchida, Rieko Kodama, Noriyoshi Oba, Hisao Oguchi, Mie Kumagi etc etc.
How come we rarely ever hear of them yet Nagoshi keeps churning games at regular intervals?

Cube, sadly Ohba has left SEGA several years ago; earlier joining GungHo ent. where became director of newly created GungHo Works(already dead) and subsequently moved on march of 2010 into Premium Agency, a japanese studio where the CEO is another ex-SEGA employee who also worked at Shenmue.
Oguchi, after passing to the Sammy side of the Holding, was recently promoted, and now is Senior Managing Director, Representative Director, General Manager of R&D Group Div., besides being Director and CCO of the Holding.
Therefore, regarding these two "heads", you can put your mind at rest
-
Naka is an asshole who never even really wanted to work for SEGA in the first place and forced dozens of games to be canceled and so much great work to leave SEGA and form extremely high quality game development companies that are incredibly successful.
Nagoshi is a saint compared to him.
-

And just what games did Naka cancel?. Please don't say Sonic X because it wasn't Naka that stopped that one, but SEGA America cancelled that one, and NiGHTS II never got past the prototype stage for the DC, before the Sonic Team were ordered to make a On-Line game by none other than Isao Okawa.
And if people want to play the silly he canclled this and that game the games Lets remember than Nagoshi-sand cancelled Super Monkeyball for the DC (a true kick in the teeth for any die-hard SEGA fan) , and the 4 X-Box games Smilebit had in development all went bye bye when Nagoshi-san took control of the group
You are acting like SEGA sat down and said "Yu Suzuki, fuck off because we like brown man better". Diffrent teams etc.
The way SEGA treated Yu Suzuki is a crime, Yu Suzuki put SEGA on the Map and more or less single handedly made the SEGA in the 80's and 90's , and the way that man has been pushed back to the side lines and left to rot is an utter disgrace. But the trouble is the likes of Suzuki and Nagoshi san or the old guard, SEGA needs to start to bring up the young producers now, like it gave Nagoshi, Suzuki and Hisao Oguchi their chance in their younger days.

I know there are a lot of "etc..." but just keeping an eye on someones:
- Makoto Uchida
He is doing a great job for Sega in China. He is also responsible for some titles we are playing or seeing these days; he is just not "creating" new things anymore. He is pratically the BOSS there.
- Rieko Kodama
Her newest game is 7th Dragon, and the game is beautiful and very well made. Yes, she still making games. I know that because she told us on the super special edition of P-SPEC.
- Noriyoshi Oba
He made good things when on Sega, but has him really made original things? I can't remember... From rumors, he left almost because Naka Yuji was a jerk. Also, his last works at Sega failed on sales.
- Hisao Oguchi
He is just a game designer and I don't like him. He is the responsible why Yu Suzuki is not working on nothing at Sega now. He was the president, he disliked Yu Suzuki, he managed to ruin almost everything Yu was doing there. That's why Yu almost left Sega. At least he is good at making pachinko machines.
- Mie Kumagai
Well, see the front page of Segabits.
The rest of the star cast we know that stills on Sega are working really hard there. Why we can't see new projects from them? Because the new policy created by the new president is very clear: if the project does not have 100% guarantee that it can sell at least 150k copies, it got rejected.
Last I've heard, Sega is rejecting a lot of projects from them ;p
About the topic, Nagoshi was Yu Suzuki pupil, and for me, all his games are just cheaper or different versions of Yu Suzuki productions and some Sega major titles.
He is selling, so it's okay for Sega. Also, Sega needed someone to show to the media, and Nagoshi was choosen. He is just a PR boy ;p Like Hideo Kojima does for Konami. It's just a face; an image.
Some comparisons:
- Space Harrier(YU) X Planet Harriers(Nagoshi)
- OutRun(YU) X Daytona USA(Nagoshi)
- Virtua Fighter(YU) X Spike Out(Nagoshi)
- Shenmue(YU) X Yakuza(Nagoshi)
- Sonic(SEGA) X Monkey Ball(Nagoshi)
- Golden Axe(SEGA) X Slash Out(Nagoshi)
- Street Fighter(Capcom) X Burning Rival(Nagoshi)
- Panzer Dragoon(SEGA) X Panzer Dragoon Orta(Nagoshi)
- F-ZERO(Nintendo) X F-ZERO GX(Nagoshi)
He said on an interview that he hates GTA. He said recently that they showed that movie from Binary Domain because the foreign users would complain about an announce without it.
When in charge of the CS section of Sega, he said he would never allow a new game from a franchise that failed on sales in the past (that included Panzer Dragoon).
I dunno if I like him or not, but I know that he saved Sega at once.

Cube. You are freaking out for no reason.

Cube. You are freaking out for no reason.
This could be his tipping point. Every sega fan has one, I had mine a long time ago. It's pretty earth shattering when you realize the best game development house is gone, and likely to never return. Even worse is watching the rest of the industry stagnate with constant sequels, micro transactions, and a major lack of risk taking by the bigger boys. Nobody throws the money at the development teams that SEGA did while continuing to allow the same amount of creative freedom. Finally there's all the studio closures, flight-plan, bizarre, Cing... It isn't exactly the best time to be a gamer.
-
I like sequels. I don't think we have more than we have ever had. I think we see a big picture, like a full generation, then try to say "Well this year we had too many sequels".
Again, no one cares when its stuff they want. Panzer Dragoon, Shining Force.
-

I wouldn't care because those aren't first person shooters. With that being said we were getting major new triple A titles at this same point in PS2's lifespan, which cannot be said for any console this generation; Rogue Galaxy (5 years into PS2), Okami (6), Gun (5), Yakuza (5), Shadow of the Colossus (5), Guitar Hero (5), God of War (5), Bumpy Trot (6), there is more but you get the idea. It's a pretty stark contrast in my opinion, especially since SotC and Okami are arguably the best games on the system.
-
I think your issue is more with the fact that you dislike this generation of games, not the fact that there are sequels.
I'm quite enjoying this generation. Not too heavy myself into the first person shooting stuff. But I had fun with new IPs like Infamous, Lost Odyssey, Uncharted, Enslaved, Blazblue (which I got today actually), Bioshock (FPS? only in perspective)Condemned, Littlebigplanet, Bayonetta, Vanquish, Madworld etc.
Not only that, indie games are bigger than they where back on PS2 due to services like PSN/XBLA. We wouldn't get games like Super Meat Boy, Braid, Pixel Junk shooter series, Dead Nation, Joe Danger on PS2.
Not to mention there is alwasy Last Guardian to be excited about. Plus, being a fan that I was growing up of older PC RPGs, I'm more than happy with Skyrim and Deus Ex getting new installments.
-
Cube. You are freaking out for no reason.
Sorry man, I am like completely freaking out for no apparent reason.
My favourite designer and head of my favourite studio has been sacked and I am left to play games by fucking Platinum Games!
I should be excited it isn't like the resources that should've gone to Overworks have gone to them.
Bayonetta is compeletely original and so very fucking innovative. It is like Overworks never made Nightshade.

@ Taroyamada: Your right, this is my tipping point.
I am pretty much done with this Fucking company, i'll still check out the few new Japanese games that come out but for all I care their consumer division can die and go to hell as it is composed of Platinum Games, Creative Assembly and Sports Interactive.
Maybe I am in a hyperactive mental state, but I am glad I am a retrowriter here cause pretty much all that worked for me is in the past.

For those who are unaware of the greatness that was Noriyoshi Ohba I am in the process of updating his wikipage, information is sparse but I pride myself on compiling his most comprehensive gameography.

Look at the list, his only original creations are Clockwork Knight and Eternal Arcadia. 2 big flops of Sega XD
Bare Knuckle was basically made by others (based on Final Fight) and Sakura Taisen was almost done by Hiroi Ouji and the now dead Phantasy Star Team.
Never heard about Blazing Heroes.
He was at NEC before joining GungHo. He failed 3 times as President, sadly.
Yeah, everybody here knows I love Hibana and Kunoichi, I always ask Sega to bring her back. But Hibana was not created by Ohba. The guys responsible for Hibana left Sega too ;p
Sorry but Platinum Games are doing better than Overworks ;p But even with the sales and popularity of Bayonetta, you can't see Sega using her anywhere...
Capcom promotes their characters better than everyone else in the games world (only loses to Nintendo).
-
I know who he is. Bayonetta is original as in, there is no game like it. Yes. You are correct. But why the fuck are you so angry that SEGA published it? Nightshade wasn't that good. I know you love that title, but your acting like Bayonetta (a game you have not even played) is super shit and that SEGA did not make Nightshade 2 due to Bayonetta.
They didn't make Nightshade 2 because it was reviewed and sold poorly.
I don't understand the logic of people that think Bayonetta somehow canceled SEGA's ability to not make other titles. Also, half your rant is about how you hate SEGA because they don't make games with designers/producers/directors that don't want to make games with SEGA.
I agree with Team Andromeda. SEGA needs to establish big Japanese names to make new exciting franchises that could be big. Their talent won't last forever and after those people are done, who will make the great games?
-

There are some games I enjoyed this gen, shockingly not InFamous, I say shockingly because Sly 2 is probably my favorite 3D platformer of all time. Big Sly Cooper fan and I really wouldn't mind a fourth. I love Uncharted 2, and the first isn't half bad either, Hirokazu Yasuhara worked on the series : D. I also enjoyed most of the other games you mentioned except BioShock, I scare super fucking easily and that game had me shitting my pants within the first ten minutes (as soon as that zombie thing walked by the elevator I turned that shit off).
In regards to indie games, they have definitely become a larger market due to PSN/XBLA and iOS, but I disagree that some of those wouldn't exist without said services. They did exist, Super Meat Boy in fact did. Steam and PC was the indie scene, and it was a healthy one, and arguably is still the healthiest (Super Meat Boy sold best on Steam, exclusives like Super Crate Box, etc. etc.).
Overall I just think this generation is worse than the last, good games don't come out at the rate they did last gen, we aren't getting the super innovative games we were. Excluding maybe the DS, I enjoyed the DS this gen, lots of cool stuff happened there, and 2D gaming is fantastic.
@ Taroyamada: Your right, this is my tipping point.

Yeah dude, it's all good, I gotta be honest. I was a huge Nintendo fanboy back in the day, then a Sony fanboy, hated SEGA the entire time. I was like four, or five (1991 folks, same year as the blue hog) and my bro pretty much only bought Capcom and SNK stuff, I associated those titles with SEGA and thought they were too hard, was too young to get the 1st/3rd party difference. Basically anything on the system was either made by Sony, SEGA, or Nintendo to me, and it didn't help that my brother would perfect my ass at fighting games EVERY DAMN TIME. Preferred the easier Mario games, and the terrible button masher that was Killer Instinct ( ).
Moral of the story is I missed out on a lot of SEGA games, and even you, as a SEGA fan through that period, likely missed out. I am working on Shining Force: Legacy of Great Intention right now and loving it. Find something you missed out on, there has to be something.
With that being said, don't be so hard on Platinum, I liked Bayo, and Vanquish. As for Creative Assembly, I hate the RTS genre with a passion, but Creative Assembly was a good purchase business-wise and I can tell that new Shogun game is of good quality even if I do hate the genre.
his only original creations are Clockwork Knight and Eternal Arcadia.
I like.... Both of those. And Streets of Rage, it was better than Final Fight.
-

Aaah Aaah, Right.
Good.
Now I see so basically designers like Naka, Suzuki and so on left SEGA because they didn't want to make games at SEGA.
It wasn't like the new management was shooting their ideas down.
It isn't like developers like Mizuguchi have stated openly that SEGA changed so drastically that they had to leave the company.
-
@TaroYamada Yes, games like Super Meat Boy would have probably still happen. But not all and some wouldn't have done as well without services like XBLA and PSN. I think PSN/XBLA took the indie scene to the more mainstream gamer.
@Cube: They where shooting their ideas down? Give me prove that all their ideas where being shot down. Most of the companies decided to make their own studios, which in the end would have earned them more money. You don't have prove of anything you say, just blind rage. Naka explained why he left, he didn't want to work with a big team that Sonic Team has become. Mizuguchi left because he didn't want the Sammy and Sonic Team merge to happen.
-
I... wish..........I was.... never a fucking sega fan
A lot of us wish you weren't.
You should find another company to be a fan of so you can freak out when you realize staff come and go from all companies. 50 years ago Sega had none of the staff it has today and in 50 years if it still exists it'll be the same. All new staff.
It's the same with Nintendo, Sony, Capcom, EA, SquareEnix, Konami, TakeTwo... you name it.
When Yu Suzuki or Naka or Nagoshi, Kodama etc etc came to Sega nobody knew them or cared about them... They were low end nobodies. They rise up and become great just as I imagine there are a bunch of new up and coming staff in Sega we haven't heard much out of yet that'll be the Suzuki's of tomorrow.
As it turns out the people that leave Sega rarely amount to much and often fade away into obscurity, which makes me wonder if they had much left to offer had they not left.
-

They are far to many links to post.
Go read all the interviews Naka and Suzuki have conducted as of late.
Suzuki clearly revealed at GDC and months earlier with 1UP that was rejecting his ideas which lead him to make his own studio.
Then we have Naka he spoke of working at several games prior to Let's Tap but it was with Kikizo where he revealed cancelling his game that he worked on since he left Sonic Team cause SEGA didn't aproove it.
Evidently SEGA kept rejecting his games till he had to seek out another publisher for Ivy and now his upcomming Wii game.
A lot of us wish you weren't.

Yes you are right Ohba, Mizuguchi, Suzuki, Naka etc etc left SEGA 50 years ago and are all retired and seriously have nothing more to contribute:
It isn't like Ohab's Shinobi games preceeded the DMC games and were better than them.
I am sure Mizuguchi addictive puzzle games, and rail shooters are not doing anything useful other than adding to the scientific credence of psycophysiological phenomenon's such as Synesthesia.
I'll skip Suzuki cause that guy clearly has nothing to show, completely washed up working with SunSoft on Mobile games.
Oh and Naka the egotistical maniac has destroyed SEGA and is responsible for so much loss to the company. His latest game Ivy the Kiwi for the DS is pure garbage and what we need are more Super Monkey Ball games!
Surely they have all faded into obsecurity and are washed up.
so I shouldn't really throw a fit, i'm being completely irrational.

Clearly your nerd rage has hindered your ability to read and understand.
I'm saying that 50 years AGO when none of these people were employed at Sega there was a completely different team of people at Sega. Far before we were born.
Back then employees came, left and retired. I bet back in those days there were some seriously great employees that are now gone... In 50 years FROM now, in the future all of the current employees will be gone and there will be NEW Nagoshis, new Nakas, new Suzukis in their place.
The fact is that employees come and go.
I bet somewhere in that mass of new employees Sega have, new developers, coders and so on there will be some really fantastic people that stand out from the crowd and make some break through games and engines and will effectively be the replacement.
As time goes on you can expect every current member of Sega to grow old, leave and eventually die... Sad as it is. New blood will take over and continue the company legacy just as it has over the past 50/60 years.
But as it turns out a lot of these people that have left that were once amazing figures in Sega have not gone onto do anything really THAT great.
Ivy the Kiwi ISN'T anything to write home about bro, sorry... It's a simple iphone type game.

Right now I find Sega to be in its LEAST offensive state since 2001/2002.
The last couple of years Sega have put out some DAMN good games. Could they be better? Yeah they could release Shenmue 3! =D But as they are right now I'm quite content.

I agree, they are releasing solid content. I can totally get however why a old school SEGA fan would be upset, we lost the best and nobody stepped up to fill their shoes. It's pretty heartbreaking and I wasn't even a SEGA fan when they discontinued the Dreamcast.
Also, where the fuck is an updated Virtua Fighter 5 port?
-
Nostalgia's a hell of a drug.
I'll be honest, it always saddens me whenever I hear another developer from the old school has left SEGA. It would also certainly dissapoint me if ideas for new games from the old school devs or sequels to old games are being shot down because they can't sell 150k.
But...well, time goes on. Developers come and developers go, it's important for a company to foster new talent and new ideas. Bringing in other developers is a great way to do that. And as disappointing as the 150k requirement is...SEGA kind of needs it. Let's not forget, it wasn't so long ago that SEGA was in the red year after year. This kind of sales assurance is necessary for their continued survival.
I'm happier with SEGA right now then I've been in awhile. Whether it's stuff like Vanquish and Bayonetta, Sonic Colors and Yakuza, House of the Dead Overkill and SEGA All Stars....I've had a LOAD of fun with SEGA games these last few years. They are in a good place, and things are only going to get better with stuff like PSO2 and Sonic Generations on the horizon.

Also gotta agree with this, All-Stars Racing was fantastic. Terribly underrated game, and unlike Mario Kart it isn't a damn lottery to determine the victor.

I can get that, all great titles. Still, one wasn't even developed internally, and the other, while great, feels like a lesser version of Shenmue, even if I do enjoy it. Furthermore you have to be displeased at the very least in how Sonic has been handled, and if you like VF 5 aren't you a little annoyed we haven't heard about Final Tuned being ported home?
And this pile?

Why are you comparing Yakuza to Shenmue? You may as well compare Grand Theft Auto to Shenmue too. It does not feel like a lesser version because it's not even that, it's a totally different game.
Furthermore you have to be displeased at the very least in how Sonic has been handled, and if you like VF 5 aren't you a little annoyed we haven't heard about Final Tuned being ported home?
Sonic was being handled terribly since the Dreamcast era, we're going a decade back here and the problems can be attributed to that SEGA of old. And whilst I would like VF5FT on consoles, I know the sales of Virtua Fighter 5 and they were well below par.
And this pile?

Shinobi X was far worse for me.

Cube is effectively following the publisher because of the people who are at the company, instead of the actual content for the most part. When Outrun originally came out I did not say WOW YU SUZUKI GAME MUST PLAY IT, I played it because it was a good game.

Basically Cube:

Also, where the fuck is an updated Virtua Fighter 5 port?
not just VF5FS, where the hell is Border Break SEGA???
[youtube:2ncupsvw]NTp43g6lhms[/youtube:2ncupsvw]
what bugs me is that this game has a potential to be a successful franchise! there is a chance for a great Multi-player Online shooter like this to be something in today's gaming business even if it has Mechas! as long as it plays that great.

Sega can not take risks anymore at the Consumer Division because Satomi Hajime, the owner of the company get pissed off with them releasing a lot of games but not making return. His intentions were to really close this division of Sega and focus only in the AM division 2 years ago; and the CS division still in danger. They simply CAN NOT lose money anymore.
That's why Satomi called Okitane back. The new president is a good and clever guy, and yes, he is rejecting every single project from everyone at Sega which does not have guarantees to sell good.
Nagoshi still selling good with Monkey Ball and Yakuza, but even him always says every single year on interviews that if the game does not sells this time, he is lost at Sega.
Binary Domain its probably the game that could ends Nagoshi's career at Sega.
-
Binary Domain will be a bust, then he will make Yakuza 5 and everything in life will be OK again.
-
Yeah, Sega is far from perfect these days, but they still make a lot of really awesome stuff. I don't give a fuck if it's internally developed or not, a good game is a good game. I actually play games for *gasp* enjoyment, not as a badge of pride because I'm supporting Sega.
I get pissed with Sega more than anyone for things like their handling of Sonic 4 (or sonic in general), but overall they've still made a number of my favourite games this generation and still are probably my favourite Publisher today.
As George said though, Binary Domain is going to be a tremendous flop, rivalled only by Anarchy Reigns in terms of Flop-ness.
Virtua Fighter 5:FS will probably be coming still, I still think it's happening. I also think they don't want to shoot themselves in the foot and try to compete with Marvel 3 and Super Street Arcade though. Not to mention Tekken x SF and the others. They need to pick their spot so they have some chance of sales.

I don't really care if it is internally developed either, but recognizing Platinum as a separate entity is important I feel because eventually they will leave SEGA, and then we will be back where we were without their stellar content.
I think Binary Domain will flop too, unfortunately, because I am actually somewhat interested in it. With Anarchy Reigns I think it won't sell much but I also think Platinum is really keeping dev costs down with it. At least I hope they are because it looks low budget.
Did somebody say flop?

@ Taroyamada: I have to thank you, for your continued support and understanding towards how devastated I am after hearing this news.
It is SEGA shattering news to me and I am afraid it will be very hard to get over it given the current situation, it may be a deal breaker.
@ everyone else:
I can not question Nagoshi's legitimacy as a SEGA designer cause his entire career has been modeled by the SEGA I grew up with, but he's turned out as such a sleaz ball.
The way he dresses and the games he designs with breast ogling buttons and hot tub masturbation mini game, his games are marketed around sex and violence which is a part of life and all very enjoyable that is why it is a part of so many other games.
[youtube:xglhgur1]c7p63ITc7FM[/youtube:xglhgur1]
Shenmue had a red light district, with hostesses and the Yakuza very much present and it showed them accurately with people warning you how wrong they are and then people telling you how cultured they are. It is also true Yakuza is so much deeper then how it is marketed and if you pick up and play it, while it has a lot of ridiculous crap in it the message deep down is heart warming and 100% true blue. I just wish they toned down the sleazy marketing, just look at the damn box art for Yakuza 4.
I stuck with my Dreamcast all the way till 2005 and bought my GameCube (followed by PS2 an year later) arguably during the worst era to be a SEGA fan around the time Shadow the Hedgehog came out needless to say it was my first game for the system. This was around the time SEGA had minimized almost all internal development and were publishing tons of crap.
I quickly went back and started buying the games I had missed out over the last 3 - 4 (2001 - 2005) years all made by the AM teams and they were fantastic just like all the games on the Dreamcast.
I researched to see why these SEGA games weren't good, it was due to the downsizing and staff departures that AM games weren't on the same quality.
Then we had games like Alien Syndrome, Golden Axe, VectorMan 3 solidified my belief that developers associated with the franchise can make the best game for it. I have love and respect for them and I am willing to give them another chance even if they fail cause they have given me great games in the past.
So one of the games I played on PS2 was the super fantastic Shinobi and it's slightly disappointing (only in terms of plot) sequel Nightshade, I really really love them. Then I bought the DMC trilogy for PS2, the first game is horribly dated and not fun. It appears at the time of it's release even it wasn't fun as it was more centered around it's brilliant graphics than fun gameplay.
Given that it came out the same year as Shinobi, it doesn't hold a candle to it. Especially since it is termed a hack and slash similar to the classic games of old (GAMESPOT). Then I checked out the sequel which was a critical failure where as Nightshade was a commercial failure, and a critical success a huge improvement over Shinobi.
DMC3 might be fantastic but it really doesn't matter cause Shinobi didn't get to make the 3rd game. Instead SEGA started publishing those Tenchu games which I didn't bother with a few years back SEGA deal with the Tenchu studio expired and it was time for Shinobi to return instead we got Bayonetta.
So I really needed Shinobi 3.
Noriyoshi Oba is my favorite developer and IT MATTERS A HELL OF A LOT TO ME that the developers involved with the franchise (company) make games in the genre (for the targeted demographic) cause if they don't we get Golden Axe: Beast Rider, and if they are involved and make a crappy game we get Altered Beast which I can live with.
CAPCOM went downhill just like SEGA just look at the new Resident Evil game and D.M.C, they look so uncapcom that is because their developers left and SEGA gave them a 2nd chance.
WHY DIDN'T THOSE ASSHOLES GIVE THEIR OWN A SECOND CHANCE!!!!
WHY THE FUCK DOES CLOVER GET A SECOND CHANCE WHEN WOW ENTERTAINMENT, SMILEBIT, UGA, OVERWORKS AND ALL THE OTHER GEMS FAID INTO OBSECURITY AND YOU ASSHOLES JUST ACCEPT IT!
STILL SUPPORTING SEGA, AND WORRYING ABOUT THEIR FINANCES AND BUYING GAMES JUST TO GIVE THEM MONEY, WHEN ALL IT DOES IS REINFORCE THEIR POLICY ON MAKING CRAP!
I WON'T BUY BAYONETTA CAUSE I DON'T WANT BAYONETTA, I WANT SHINOBI 3 and that makes me a true blue SEGA FAN where as you will buy anything with the SEGA LOGO on it.
While I expected Sharky to do the exact opposite of what I do, as in most cases we are polar opposite and he'll probably even be fine if Platinum Games makes Shenmue 3, I am really disappointed in a lot of people here, rationalizing such a loss as a usual rant, or downplaying the significance of Noriyoshi Oba as a whole.
What the fuck is wrong with you people?
He was the head of OverWorks which makes him responsible for the classic Streets of Rage and Shinobi on MegaDrive, Clockwork Knight on Sega Saturn, Skies of Arcadia on Dreamcast, and Shinobi, Nightshade & BloodWillTell for PS2.
It doesn't matter what role he had.
Madeline Shrouder wasn't the creator of Sonic but without her the original would've been like Sonic 06 ending with Sonic making out with Madonna!
If She was still around many of the things you hate about the classic Adventure games or 06 wouldn't have happened. PEOPLE MATTER, IT IS PEOPLE WHO MAKE THE GAMES!!!
That said, their is still a little hope in me Obha might be gone but he was instrumental in creating Team Valkyria as many members in that studio worked under him and Rieko Kodama and since I finally have a PS3 now it is only a matter of time before I get my hands on that gem.
@ Sanus: Your little remark was probably the thing that single handedly hurt me the most. Imagine all the time you've ranted on about Ecco and I've always empathized with you.
Nice to see how you finally acted when I was in a similar position.
-
We are all assholes, okay.
I suppose this is goodbye? Goodbye then!
Love, a rational minded individual.
-
Yeesh! Rage dump.
Edit: Oh yeah, cube, quit lashing out and calling people "assholes". It makes you look bad and it makes SEGAbits writers look bad.
-
cube, I think you are over-reacting and forgot completely that almost everyone here have complained about Sega's situation since ever.
You are also bitching about something TOO MUCH OLD! Ohba has left Sega TOO MANY YEARS AGO!
We were asking Sega about the old famous creators of the house all this time; all in vain. Sega is not and did not and will not hear us again, since almost those creators have left the company by theirs own decision.
Sega don't have the money and structure to support the old teams anymore. They were almost of the time in debit, not making money for Sega since Sega started the Consumer Division. Pratically always in "red"...
It's easier and cheaper making deals with third parties developers, like Platinum.
However the internal teams are doing a great job, and finally, making some cash for Sega. Sega CS3 is doing wonderful on sales like they never did before.
Even with this on mind, Sega still holding and trying to keep the "old" Sega alive, like creating a new job specially for Yu Suzuki, and I'm pretty sure they made it just to keep Yu in the company and wait for a better time to allow him do big things again.
Also, the only one guy who has left Sega and still doing great things since then, is the creator of Galaxy Force II. He is a million seller now!
Tidbits about SEGA CS3(series):
-Hatsune Miku: more than a half million sold
-Phantasy Star: already million seller and best seller of Sega
-Shining: Hearts sold 180k being the best seller of the series
-Bayonetta: million seller in its first entry
-Valkyria: a smash hit
-Vanquish: 800k copies around the world
Next titles(rumored):
-Shining Force 4ever
For PS3 using the Valkyria Chronicles system and based on Sakura Taisen system.
-Rise of Nightmares
For Kinect.
Yeah, I miss a lot of the old Sega too, but I cant stop loving Sega when they are still releasing so many good titles like the ones I've wrote up.
p.s.: we can't do nothing to make Ohba or Naka or Mizuguchi or... etc... coming back to Sega, sadly -_-
-
Edit: Oh yeah, cube, quit lashing out and calling people "assholes". It makes you look bad and it makes SEGAbits writers look bad.
Only if you stop buying those SEGA games Barry, YOU'RE PART OF THE PROBLEM! Asshole.

For some reason I'm unable to edit my last post.
That post was fairly cathartic needed to unleash the rage one last time, I read my post again, lashing out at you all crossed the line. I apologize.
That said I still find SEGA Managerial actions such as reabsorbing AM Teams, downsizing them, not publishing Naka games, making deals with Platinum Games when they should offer such privileges to ex members like Oba as bull shit and hate-able.
@ Aki-At: I'm a Retro Writer therefore my view on present day SEGA has little impact on my role here however if you truly are fed up off me.
You can request George to give me the boot, I wouldn't mind but I do mind you more or less asking me to get lost for having different views than yourself.

I WON'T BUY BAYONETTA CAUSE I DON'T WANT BAYONETTA, I WANT SHINOBI 3 and that makes me a true blue SEGA FAN where as you will buy anything with the SEGA LOGO on it.
I buy anything that I think I will enjoy. My most anticipated game this year is The Witcher II, which doesn't have anything to do with Sega in the slightest. If I had a 3DS I would buy Super Street and maybe Shadow Wars, but I wouldn't get Super Monkey Ball 3D.
I've avoided Sonic Racing and Sonic 4 like the plague because I don't like them, regardless of the fact that Sega published and promoted them heavily.
I buy games that I like, and I buy and judge them on their own merits. I don't get caught up in what is 'True Sega' or not. I don't see why anyone would, or how it would affect enjoyment of a game.
-
@ MMG74:
Right after seeing the first teaser for Bayonetta, I knew I was going to avoid that shit like the plague.
Oh and my favorite game this year is obviously Alan Wake (even though it is an year old :P).

famitsu is covering Binary Domain this week .... new details soon.
-
So this means we are going into 'scatter for information mode'? What day of the week does Famitsu hit?
-
more
Sega went quiet on Binary Domain following the game's announcement back in December. The silence is at long last coming to an end. This week's Famitsu has a twenty page look at the game.
Binary Domain is an original action adventure title from Toshihiro Nagoshi and the team that brought us Yakuza. Different from Yakuza, the game targets international audiences. Be sure and read all our past coverage, including screenshots, videos and commentary from Nagoshi, here.
Famitsu's coverage this week at long last provides us with names for two primary characters. The main character, the one who looks like a space marine, is named Dan Marshall and voiced by Koichi Yamadera. Also introduced is Roy Boden. He's the one who... also looks like a space marine. Nicknamed "Big Boy," Roy is voiced by Masami Iwasaki.
In an interview, Nagoshi jokes that the game may have the most dialogue in gaming history.
There's presumably a lot more across the twenty pages than just this, so check back later in the day for more details.
http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/0 ... ter_names/ (http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/04/27/binary_domain_character_names/)

It is SEGA shattering news to me and I am afraid it will be very hard to get over it given the current situation, it may be a deal breaker.
It's okay, my relationship with SEGA is kind of a special one because I didn't find out I liked their games until around four or so years after the Dreamcast was discontinued. Then I went back further and became more familiar with their library, grew up hating them though, and my brother was the SEGA guy (Gen, Sat, Dreamcast). I totally get wishing you weren't a sega fan because if you loved those games and they are never coming back it is painful. Sometimes I wish I had never familiarized myself with their software catalogs myself, even if I do like the occasional game they publish today.
-
Rather unfair, you're having the ability to play several games at once and it was never like Shenmue and Skies of Arcadia and Phantasy Star Online and Jet Set Radio and Sonic Adventure were weeks apart in release.
In the span of the Dreamcast era we've got Valkyria Chronicles 1, 2 and 3, Yakuza Kenzan, 3, 4, PSP and Of the End, Phantasy Star Zero, Portable, PSP2, PSP2i, and Online 2 and Sonic Unleashed, Colours and Generations now. Obviously a lot lot more games made during this era but when you go back to a particular era you have the wonderful ability of hindsight. Not that I am saying any one of them have topped Shenmue.
Let it go, let it go, just keep on dancin'.

No, I totally understand that, rather it's the games SEGA makes now that disappoint. I love Valkyria, maybe more than Skies, I also enjoy Yakuza, but it's rather there is no risk taking like Jet Grind or Rez anymore it would seem. Also I think some of your dates are off, Dreamcast was around from late 98 to early 2001, ~2 years and 4 months (not gonna bother getting the exact amount).
It doesn't really matter, SEGA has increased quality and I won't argue it because it's true, but they aren't as good as they were. They have made some of my favorite games this gen as well, but from my perspective SEGA was the best, the best of all time. So losing what I view as the main creative force in the industry and then seeing the industry in a state that I view as pretty stagnant, with some exceptions, compared to previous ones doesn't exactly inspire me.
Also Doctor Who : D, nice!

No, I totally understand that, rather it's the games SEGA makes now that disappoint. I love Valkyria, maybe more than Skies, I also enjoy Yakuza, but it's rather there is no risk taking like Jet Grind or Rez anymore it would seem.
But one game you just claimed you love was a massive risk by SEGA, Valkyria Chronicles was a new major IP, a SRPG (Historically the weakest subgenre of RPGs) and on a HD console. The game meet none of it's commercial targets and the only reason it continues is because of dedicated fan support.
SEGA still takes risks, every company does, but you have to balance it, both Dreamcast era SEGA and EA recently shown that taking risks does not give you success. Infact Rez and Jet Set Radio sold less than Yakuza 1, and Yakuza 1 was an absolute failure for SEGA in N America.
Also I think some of your dates are off, Dreamcast was around from late 98 to early 2001, ~2 years and 4 months (not gonna bother getting the exact amount).
Just take out Yakuza Kenzan, Valkyria Chronicles, Sonic Unleashed and Phantasy Star Zero and the list should still work!
It doesn't really matter, SEGA has increased quality and I won't argue it because it's true, but they aren't as good as they were.
It really depends on who you ask!
Whilst the Dreamcast had many unique and stylish games, I just did not find any (Barring Yu's efforts) to be designed as well as many of their Mega Drive games, or as good. And considering we still got to see what other porjects for the DC were thanks to them moving to the PS2, GC etc, I just do not think the Dreamcast era SEGA is as impressive as some people make it out to be.
So I'd say this decline started as far back as the Mega Drive for me!
The major problem with the industry is expense now, production values are too high and it's causing a strain on most developers that are not linked with a major publisher. THQ, Electronic Arts and TakeTwo are all still in the red this generation.
Back then the industry was cheaper to develop for, taking a risk wasn't as hazardous as it is now. We are in the years of record production value but not record profits, instead record losses, should tell you something is wrong right there.
Also Doctor Who : D, nice!
You wouldn't happen to be a fan, would you?

Looks like SEGA is gearing for a new Shining game too
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011- ... ning-force (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-04-27-sega-working-on-new-shining-force)
"It's been ten years since the Shining series was re-invented," he commented, referring to 2002 GBA effort Shining Soul, developed by Grasshopper Manufacture.
"Currently, we're preparing a title that sums up the whole series and should provide an answer to users' curiosity. I can't give details yet, but I'd like to reveal it before we go too far into the future."
First popularised on the Mega Drive back in 1992 with Shining Force, the last game in the 28 title-strong franchise to see an English language release was Shining Force EXA on the PlayStation 2 back in 2007.
"Shining is a long-running series, but development work largely stopped on it for a period of time," Sawada explained.
"We redeveloped and resurrected the name as SEGA shifted from hardware to software, and the goal for the games I've worked on is to target a large swathe of the userbase and do something that hasn't been done before with the series. That's still the direction I take today."
Not that many of us care considering what he has done to the Shining series but with what Suzuki Yu said, seems like quite a few announcements are going to start popping up.

This thread is quickly turning into something else so I shall keep it fast; I understand why the risk taking is happening less, Sony and MS have misunderstood what consumers desire (clearly given the Wii and DS' sales) and have decided to push tech too fast forcing them to price their products high. Hence Sony went from extreme market dominance to third place. It has caused a ton of damage to the third party scene as well.
Still I cannot help but feel had things played out differently for SEGA, whether that be they never left the console game, or if Sammy had never merged with them and they maintained independence as a 3rd party that there would be a lot more innovative games along the lines of Valk. Valk definitely was the quality of a SEGA first party game, so I am aware they can still do it sometimes. It needs to get off PSP though.
Also you didn't like the Dreamcast era? Chu Chu Rocket is one of the best puzzle games of all-time  Are you one of those odd folks who doesn't like Jet Grind? Like Uranus? The only game disappointing to me on Dreamcast was VF 3, I am a huge Virtua Fighter fan and VF 3 wasn't up to snuff with VF 2 I feel. The Daytona USA port could have had better controls too, but I got used to them and they really were not that bad.
Yes, I am a fan of the Doctor : P

Well my point was not risk taking is happening less, it's happening more, it just so happens to not include games developed solely for artistic merit!

It's impossible for the merger with Sammy not to happen, too many games bombed and in particular, those extremely creative ones failed to make any money for SEGA. I just do not see how they could continue producing said innovative games when the market was openly rejecting all those titles.
And I actually consider Valkyria, whilst a very good game, not upto SEGA's best, infact the titles I previously mentioned in Yakuza 3 and 4 have it beaten in every department except for gameplay, which depends on what you prefer (In which again I prefer Yakuza) so whilst a good game, not SEGA's best.
But at the end of the day, I prefer fun to innovation, so whilst say, Afterburner Climax is not innovative, I'd rather play that than Valkyria Chronicles.
And finally, you will never see Valkyria Chronicles on home consoles again unless SEGA does not mind losing money, sales just weren't good enough!
Also you didn't like the Dreamcast era? Chu Chu Rocket is one of the best puzzle games of all-time  Are you one of those odd folks who doesn't like Jet Grind? Like Uranus? They weren't disappointments, however they were radically different from the SEGA games I grew up in in the 80s and early 90s and when I compare stuff like the classic Sonic games, the Shinobi titles, Ristar, Phantasy Star, Shining Force etc I really just don't see that period being as great as it's made out to be. A good period none the less, but I think people are overrating many titles from that period of SEGA.
Yes, I am a fan of the Doctor : P
You have brilliant tastes :afroman:
In any case, I do find it funny how since Cube's meltdown we've been having announcement after announcement, SEGA must browse the forums.

Giant fat, getting humongous discussion quote
@Risktaking Risk taking is happening hardware wise, but that isn't necessarily a good thing. Regardless I am not into gaming for the hardware I am in it for the software.
@Merger I also understand that a merger needed to happen, I would have preferred it with someone else, but I get that it had to happen. I am just saying that stuff figuratively, as a what-if. I also understand Valkyria's sales situation, but I mean that I want it on the Nintendo handhelds (3DS) over the PSP, not necessarily home consoles. Should have been more specific about that, sorry.
@YourDreamcaststance I love the Genny period, and agree that it was probably Sonic Teams' best, though I love them all, still I think that SEGA had a lot more variety during the Dreamcast era because they broke their studios up into separate entities. I know there isn't as much variety on Dreamcast as Genesis given its' entire lifespan, but I mean for the time the devs were given on 'Cast it was pretty damn amazing given how little time there really was.
@Cubecomment, yeah we are getting a lot of good announcements, I think even Cube is excited for some.
@DoctorWho I know I do 8-) .

@Risktaking I was not talking about hardware, but software. Homefront cost THQ $50 million and it's failure has hit them hard. This is the problem when even "safe" software has become a major risk.
@Merger I'm not sure there was any better option (Bandai and Namco have infighting, Enix ceased to exist completely, Microsoft would have butchered everything etc) the only issue I really saw with the merger was the change that occured in SEGA's organization, but this is down mainly because outside of AM2 and Sonic Team, everyone was losing money, so only those two remained how it was. A major SEGA game in NA didn't even do more than 5,000 units in sales... It was a terrible terrible time.
@Dreamcast I'm not so sure if the pool would be larger for the DC in terms of chose, the Genesis really had it all even in such a short period. I did a comparision of only console games and SEGA's output during the Dreamcast era was similar to what they have currently, whilst when I looked at the Genesis era, they really had a larger library in any given year.

Homefront wasn't risky, it was stupid, it failed because it was crap. The entire plot was crap, gameplay was below average and the advertising campaign was really corny and poorly received. The sales were fine, and are nearing 2 million. The reason it harmed their stock price was because the metacritic score was low.

It was a risk in that it was stupid to ever leave a game with a over-bloated budget in the hands of a mediocre studio whose last game averaged in the 70's as well. This isn't exactly the 'risk-taking' I meant. The game was never going to have anything redeeming about it.
When I say risk I mean innovation, niche, unique and special. Name something special about Homefront? I can't think of anything, it was shite.
@Merger, I get that it had to happen, I am yet again speaking hypotheticals. Though in the realistic instance that it had to happen my dream merger would have been a company like Capcom or Konami, note that I said dream merger. I doubt either company could have afforded SEGA's losses.
@DCERA A lot of stuff is missing from the Dreamcast era, if not in name, in quality; Sonic has decreased in quality (though that looks to be reversing), Space Channel 5, Rent-A-Hero, Rez, Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue, Chu Chu Rocket on a real platform (not iOS, real platforms have buttons), Sega Rally/GT, Fighting Vipers, HotD (on home consoles), Jet Set Radio, if you count arcades Super Monkey Ball has dropped in quality. If we are counting releases from when SEGA was independent still we are missing Panzer Dragoon and Shinobi. We are also missing SEGA Sports.
Furthermore, when discussing that their release lists per year were more impressive on Genesis in regards to number of games made available you have to take into account that 3D game development takes longer than 2D and is more intensive.

I'm not calling Homefront special, I'm not even calling it good. But investing such a large sum of money must be considered a huge risk, what I am trying to say and thanks to the move to HD, budgets have increased massively, regardless, games that should be considered safe are now huge risks.

Personally, I'd rather no merger occur, at least with the merger with Sammy, SEGA was not forced to publish games and have resources relocated to certain IPs, like Bandai has with Namco.

Depends on personal opinion really, I feel SEGA Rally in 2007 was a fantastic title, Overkill is my third favourite in the series, I never had much love for Rez, Valkyria has become the premier RPG series for SEGA, Shinobi has now probably been replaced with Bayonetta, obviously you have the yearly Yakuza releases that I think is SEGA's second best series now, Space Channel 5 has been replaced probably by Hatsune Miku, SEGA's sports titles are now unfortunately a Japan only affair (But Football Manager exists outside of Japan) Monkey Ball at the arcade seems to still retain it's usual quality, but if we start talking about arcades you have to include Border Break, R-Tuned, Virtua Fighter, Shining Force Cross etc infact SEGA has a larger arcade output now than any part of the history excluding the mid 90s. Of course a lot of stuff is missing in name from the Dreamcast era, the same happened with SEGA Saturn titles in the DC Era, and Mega Drive titles in the Saturn era and so on.
I'll try expanding this later. Gotten rather late for me.
Furthermore, when discussing that their release lists per year were more impressive on Genesis in regards to number of games made available you have to take into account that 3D game development takes longer than 2D and is more intensive.
I understand, but if we do start talking about variety than the Mega Drive has it beat, the advantage of being able to make games with 10 people.
But I also do consider those Mega Drive games mostly better designed than the Dreamcast ones.

That's the thing though, it was never considered safe. THQ was penning hopes on a studio that was largely unproven and had only worked on one game before, that was not well received, nobody thought it was a good idea. The thread on Neogaf was filled with people making fun of the games' plot and questioning Kaos' ability to deliver. Most predicted it would flop or be poorly received.
Personally, I'd rather no merger occur, at least with the merger with Sammy, SEGA was not forced to publish games and have resources relocated to certain IPs, like Bandai has with Namco.
This is what I said originally :| I wish there wasn't a merger at all, but it did have to happen. I think Capcom would have treated Sega in a better manner than Sammy did. I also don't think Capcom would have been able to afford to take on Sega though.

Alright, let us not count Monkey Ball in the arcades, we will count it during the period of time that SEGA was a independent third party, published it for GC, and had not yet been taken over by Sammy. I loved Rez, Hatsune Miku is licensed and not original like SC 5. Bayonetta is not developed by SEGA, it is developed by Platinum. I know people here like to count them as part of SEGA but the fact is they will someday leave to another publisher unless sega makes a smart move and absorbs them. When they leave we will be without a action series that is the quality of Shinobi or Bayonetta. Valkyria is a SRPG, not a traditional JRPG the likes of PS, Skies or Surging Aura. I love Valk, the third game is being worked on outside of SEGA so I hope Sega WOW is working on a new IP or reviving an old one.
I understand, but if we do start talking about variety than the Mega Drive has it beat, the advantage of being able to make games with 10 people.
I might agree with this, I guess, but the Genny had nothing like Space Channel 5, Cosmic Smash, Rez, Jet Grind Radio, Chu Chu Rocket, PSO or Shenmue.

I went to a show in San Francisco and there where Homefront ads everywhere... all I could ask was... "wtf is homefront?" This is a person that is on gaming sites all the time too.
