Title: First VT 4 review - annddd
Post by: Sharky on April 24, 2011, 09:48:33 pm
Swiss Gamer Mag 'LEVEL' gave it a 9/10! Apparently they really liked it!

I can't say yet if it's a good indicator of reviews as a whole or if those plucky Swiss are a little over excited.

Let's hope they are spot on!

Great! Top SPin has gotten some good reviews too. I hope the tennis fans won't look over this title

Virtua Tennis is one of the somewhat unharmed SEGA franchises, I am pretty confident 4 will be of good quality.

If the demo is anything to go by, this is one of the best sports games this gen. If not just the best. Absolutely brilliant game, best in the series for sure.

From the sound of it, Top Spin 4 made changes from the third to make it a more accessible game, and succeeded. But VT4 took something that was awesome, and made it even more awesome. Plus it's a SEGA game, and SEGA games are always better than non-SEGA games. It's a fact of life.

Ooooh, I like where this is going. Virtua Tennis 4 is ripe of sucess seeing how it's being advertised a lot during Tennis events.

Penny Arcade here

I freaking love Penny Arcade sometimes. Sexbox 360 is probably my favorite strip that they did.

I honestly thought I was going to hate the board stuff but I'm strangely addicted to it and it feels smoother too, but slightly slower, although I haven't played the previous Virtua Tennis in a while. The game feels like it's going to be awesome, can't wait really and hope PSN isn't still down by the time of the [s:1kzstp4e]Royal Wedding[/s:1kzstp4e] release of the game.

Awesome, I fucking HATE that guy. It's such a sleazy gimmick. His entire routine stinks of corporate board meeting focus group tosh.

My least favorite thing about the demo is how you have to delete your save every time you want to make a new one, but I highly doubt the full game will be like that.

I love the SEGA references in this game, everything from Power Drift to Skies of Arcadia. Fuck yes.

SEGA references? For real? What do they do?

Is this demo coming to XBLM as well? At this rate it might be quicker to get it from there.

No, I assume the PS3 demo was an exclusive. Shame it can't be accessed now :P I've been watching YouTube videos of the demo, looks slick. I am totally making a Ryo Hazuki tennis player. Gonna get out my Shenmue strategy guide and use the high res photos as a reference. Gotta make the perfect Ryo.

The SEGA references are mostly sound effects, but clearly SEGA stuff. Like the guy who says "HURRY" sometimes says "HURRY UP, HURRY UP" from Power Drift (anyone who has played it knows what I mean), it is the same sound file and everything.

It has the balloons from Super Monkey Ball 2's minigames, stuff from Virtua Fighter's Quest modes, what appears to be the fans from Sonic Adventure's Final Egg (this is a bit of a stretch, but they look EXACTLY like them, same polys and everything), a whole minigame based on Flicky with 3D Blast sounds, the walls that pop up are from Cosmic Smash and stuff like all of the level-up sounds are used from Cupil's sounds for having a cham nearby or numerous "PEWS". There are some other things I have noticed from just the demo, and they are little touches for sure, but I would always smile when I saw them.

I love the music too. I am not sure of the genre, but it reminds me of a mix of Ristar and Jet Set Radio with a dash of Virtua Fighter. I doubt this was intentional, but just on that alone it just reeks of SEGA goodness. I wish all of SEGA's big games had stuff like this.

Sony made it sound as if both demos (one for Move coming out soon) on PSN were going to be exclusive. It is not too big of a deal though, the game is almost here.

Also, someone merge this with the other topic.

There's a difference between a reference/homage, and reusing assets.  This apparently is a case of the latter.
Title: Re: First VT 4 review - annddd
Post by: Sega Uranus on April 26, 2011, 03:15:34 pm
What is the point of using a sound clip that is over 20 years old other than being an homage?

The other Virtua Tennis games have not really used them, it is just a nice touch overall. Who cares if they are minor? Better than nothing. Even stuff like Sonic games rarely if ever have any basic SEGA references anymore. You know, like the jumping sound he used to make.

Felt the same old stuff from the demo. Not bad, just... not really changing it up like the devs spoke.

Well, at the end of the day it's always going to be a tennis game.

But from the look of it the World Tour board game mode looks completely different to what you could do in other VT games?

The game is out in the middle-east according to one of my friends who bought it, barely anyone respects street dates here.

Ah! Germans know nothing–NOTHING!

8/10:
http://palgn.com.au/playstation-3/18749 ... -4-review/ (http://palgn.com.au/playstation-3/18749/virtua-tennis-4-review/)

Seriously, I think a LOT of the lower scores are due to the game being directly compared to Top Spin 4, which is both fair and unfair. I mean, I'm not buying VT4 because I love tennis games. I'm buying it because I love the franchise and SEGA. However, the average consumer might just want a tennis game and then a VT/TS comparison is more apt.

It's like when SASASR released and reviews compared it to Mario Kart Wii. I don't love kart racers, but I love SEGA. So those types of reviews didn't target me at all. MKWii did better in some departments? I don't give a fuck, I want to race as Ryo, not Mario!

No idea who is reviewing the game for SEGAbits, but I'm sure it will be based on how the game compares to VT3 and not how it compares to Top Spin 4.

All-Stars racing is a better game than Mario kart, the winner isn't determined by a lottery. I loved critics who complained the weapons were too weak, you gotta actually know how to play a video game to get first in this game guys.

Barry I'm totally fine with people comparing Virtua Tennis to Top Spin.

Top Spin doesnt have the mini games and so cannot possibly be as fun in my book.

And so it should. It should all come down to which is the better Tennis game, like which is the better Footy game out of Fifa and Pro.

Top Spin 4 is already winning on metacritic. I figured. But one is an arcade game, the other is a simulator. Get the one you want.

Also find funny that reviewers that praised the Wii when it was release are calling the motion control schemes on Kinect/Move a 'gimmick'. Humm..

From what I hear, the Move controls for VT4 are awesome. The Kinect controls, I have yet to hear about. However Top Spin 4 does not support Kinect. So +1 to VT4.

Top Spin 4 is not very good at all, not sure why people would say it is better...

The AI is poor and does not change based on how you play. When it knows it cannot hit the ball, it will not even attempt to move in that direction. It looks very silly.

Obviously nowhere near as much content either.

And allegedly the PlayStation Move controls in Top Spin 4 barely work.

Top Spin 4 seems really good for a sim like tennis game (i've played some multiplayer), but I just don't find it anywhere near as fun as Virtua. Playing with friends, I found the game so sluggish and unresponsive compared to VT. Not to mention you don't have dive shots and the like to keep the rally going either.

None of my friends  played with had even playev VT before though, so I might try to get them into it when VT4 is out. I'll make certain to show them mini-games too.

One clear indication that VT is made more for 'fun' and arcade than TS is that there is no music whatsoever TS4 during the matches. As a VT fan it just feels too quiet.

After the utter pants demo I was expecting the worse, but seeing as it's Wimbledon and It's been a while since Pt 3 I picked this up and so glad I did. It's the same old classic gameplay with a great deal of hidden depth and greatly improved graphics some neat touches like the super shot and some of the new mini games are utter classics in their own right

Really please the final game plays so much faster than the demo too. SEGA really needs to sort out it's shit demo code it lets out
