Just saw this on NeoGAF.

Quote
SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA® Europe Ltd. today announced the upcoming re-release of Guardian Heroes™, a classic Action-RPG Brawler by celebrated developers Treasure. Originally released for the SEGA Saturn™ in 1996, Guardian Heroes has been re-mastered with enhanced graphics, online co-op and battle modes, all-new modes of play, and more. The game will be available via Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft this fall.

“Ever since we began to make SEGA’s classic Dreamcast and the Mega Drive titles available for modern systems, the fan response has been overwhelming – and the demand for their favorite games has been pouring in,” said Haruki Satomi, VP of Digital Business at SEGA. “Players have been clamoring for this treasured favorite from the Saturn days, and we cannot wait to show them what we have got for them.”

Guardian Heroes brings the Saturn favorite to life with new HD graphics, presenting Treasure’s iconic fast-paced gameplay on a new generation of hardware, with all of the convenience of purchase via instant download. The game also features:

Action-RPG Brawling: Choose one of five heroes to level up and guide along a branching storyline with five different endings
Friends, Foes, and Fighters: Play the game’s Story Mode alone or with a second player, or challenge Versus Mode with up to 12 players at once
Extended Gameplay: Time Attack Mode, Arcade Mode, Arrange Mode and more allow players to explore every nuance of 45 different fighters
Fully Re-Mastered: All-new graphics and visual effects bring the classic to life in a completely high-definition, widescreen presentation

Why for XBLA only?!! Damn.. Good news anyhow!

OMG guys! This is huge news for SEGA fans. If a rare, high profile game like this is finally getting the HD remake it deserves, does this mean more Saturn gems are on the way?

When this comes out I hope I get to play it in co-op mode with some of you out there. This is awesome news!!

2011 is turning out to be an amazing year for SEGA.

copying this from the front.  One of my favorite games of all time.  Super jazzed to see it revived.  Concerns:

1) it looks terrible. What is up with this generation’s obsession with taking a charming sprite based game and putting some ugly ugly filter on top of it to make it “hd”? A direct port would have been aesthetically superior in every way to what they’ve got going on now. I pray for a “classic” option.

2 )As of now it is exclusively for XBLA. As a ps3 owner lemme just say, that ain’t right.

Huge release IMO.  I still play GH on a relatively regular basis.  I'm already considering paying for XBL again just for this... Nothing beats a good two-player take down of G-Silver... In the words of Undead Hero...

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWW

I say meh to HD, it was never important before and it wont be important here. Guardian Heroes will still be an awesome game.

Why wouldn't you be excited about the new features? online multiplayer is enough to get me excited for this.

Guardian Heroes was on a short list of games I had to get on ebay at some point, but they were too damn expensive, so I'm pleased as punch to see it hitting XBLA.

As George said, it's the year of Barry!

This is out-fucking-standing news! I love this game so much. And that 'Arrange mode' sounds interesting, from what i read it sounds like you can use all 46 playable characters for the single player! HOLY SHIT THAT IS AWESOME.

The Coliseum mode let you play as anyone in the original and it was really awesome how deep each minor character was with their own movesets and properties.

Yeah, freaking good news! But, wait!!! It's XB exclusive!?!?

 Oh shit...

 The small and medium japanese companies like Treasure, at least most of them, are all developing exclusively for Microsoft -__-;;

XB still not selling, though ;p

Too bad Sega is not going to put any money to develops new things to the game, like new characters or new moves and new musics and endings. I really hate EVERY single ending on this game.

I still not understanding when the main characters have died on it...  :|  I have the sequel made to GBA but the game was so boring that I have not took attention to the story :p

The filters looks horrible on the pics, but awesome on the videos! I want it on the PSN with EASY trophis to get. Holy shit! Most of the trophies from the games I bought on PSN are impossible to earn >_<

Why the Americans loves to make everything looks confusing?

 For example, I've joined facebook recently, and my first impression was "chaos". A white page filled with pics from other people, comments, videos, everything there without separations or menus or....-_-;

I feel the same thing about Microsoft's XB console and services. A good example is the article from the link Barry has posted.

"XBLA", "XBLIVE", "CLASSICS LIVE", "GAMES ROOM", "GENESIS COLLECTION", "VINTAGE COLLECTION", etc, etc. etc.... WTF!?!? Oh,my head hurts! God save me!!! >_<

I think that's why these services are not popular here.

 Look at Nintendo:

-Virtual Console
 For all old consoles games

-Virtual Console Arcade
 For all old arcade games

So simple and easy to use!

PSN has the "Archives" thing, and it works fine (Nintendo service still better though).

Whatever... I hope Sega is converting Saturn titles! No problem if it is XB exclusive; it's better than never try to convert the rarest library of games of Sega.

With the source codes in hands, Sega would convert and release it everywhere, and who knows, a packaged collection would be released in the future XD

 I'm not a huge fan of digital distribution, especially now with the outrageous PSN issue... -_-;;

How is it chaos? Its just a feed of your latest updates from your friends? If you think Facebook is confusing.....

XBLA = Xbox Live Arcade

XBLIVE = Xbox Live. I have only ever seen fans use this wording of it, not Microsoft.

CLASSICS LIVE = No real proof that this is anything yet

GAME ROOM = A failed extra service that Microsoft uses for Xbox, phones and PC

GENESIS COLLECTION = The bundled collection of SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive games. It is also on PlayStation 3 and PC.

VINTAGE COLLECTION = The "Series" of Genesis/Mega Drive games SEGA and Backbone released on download platforms have this title because they all use the same emulator.

You are just used to Wii and not Xbox 360 is all, they are barely different when you look at them.

It is very simple. On Xbox Live you have every original downloadable game available under "Xbox Live Arcade", the Xbox 360 equivalent of WiiWare. There is also "Games On Demand", which is just retail games on there. That is it.

It is a lot better than how Sony does it. They do not distinguish original download-only titles from retail releases as they are all just listed under "PlayStation 3 games". In the North American PlayStation Store they do not even have pictures and rarely have videos.

I've never found XBLA to be confusing, though it sounds like STORM is thinking that all of those are separate entities when in fact they are not.

XBOX LIVE is the online multiplayer and digital media service, that name has existed since original XBOX.

XBOX LIVE ARCADE is the downloadable games service, a facet of XBOX LIVE.

That's pretty much it. As Sanus said, the other things all exist on XBOX LIVE ARCADE and are their own collections. Just names used to describe a larger collection of titles from the same or similar platforms. Like Vintage Collection are the Genesis/Mega Drive games, Dreamcast Collection are the Dreamcast games. Makes sense to me. :)

So, what are the levels/locations like in this game?  All of the footage I've seen is pretty battle-heavy, but do you ever just kind of traverse long distances?

It's pretty much a fantasy style beat-em-up, imagine Streets of Rage with swords and magic. (to put it extremely simply)

But theres the level up system, which adds the RPG elements.

I don't remember any points where you just walk without fighting anything. It does pause for any story moments where you have to read and make choices about which path to take next.

The levels depend on the paths you take. You could spend a play-through only in castles and towns, then play it again to instead fight in the heavens or underworld. Lots of variety.

As segaismysaviour said, the variety in levels is really good in this game. You go from small villiages to castles, royal dining rooms to dungeons, forests to demonic underworlds...

It's rivaled only by the great character variety.

The only "different" thing on this game compaired with others on the same genre, I believe, it's the three lines system.

You can walk through these three lines and switch it on his way. You can't walk freely like on most of similars games.

Well I own the saturn version and i'm quite happy with this "good" port of the game. The game runs on 50hz on my pal saturn which kinda sux. I like the game alot but they held back my experience and I never really played the  game that often. There were also occasional slowdowns WITHIN the 50hz frequence lol so for me this port is more than welcome

I was a little bummed to see the intro not be showcased prior to the title screen, and what they did include is pretty much directly from the Saturn... apparently they don't have the original master print. I also miss the ending credits.

The Remix mode is pretty stellar, though noticably harder. I can get killed in the first room if I'm not paying attention. Classic mode I can burn through and use only 3 credits, but  I'm lucky if I finish Remix with 3 remaining.

I do like having the gallery to keep track of all the paths I've taken, and figure out which ones I've missed. It'll be a while till I find all the endings.

The guy loling is me after my brother and I were playing the 12 player versus mode that would put Smash Bros and Power Stone to shame. I think we all should get a gather-round one day and go crazy. And Zur is my favorite character now. Yohohoho!

By the way, wasn't there a sequel around called Advanced Guardian Heroes for the GBA? I know it wasn't published by Sega.

Ubisoft published the GBA game. I never played it, it's just too different from the Guardian Heroes formula. The one good thing that got added from it into the XBLA version is air dashing.

I had trouble enjoying the game when I first played it years ago, but the more I played it the more I liked it. The style is very unusual too, I kind of hated it all at first, but now the charm has really sunk into me.

This really was one of the weirder experiences I have had with a game recently. I really recommend it though, even if it seems overwhelming and awkward at first. The multiplayer is also especially fun if you are playing with a group of people you know who will not take the fight too seriously.

On the topic of exclusivity: Microsoft has had a deal with Treasure Co for quite some time. They are set to make Radiant Silvergun 3/Ikaruga 2 for them along with a few new games and more ports. I do not see this changing anytime soon, but I doubt Vita is part of this contract (wishful thinking?).

I hope SEGA publishes their next few games though, Radiant Silvergun had an outstanding conversion and I literally never see anyone talking about it. This really, really makes me sad.

I've been downloading this for the past week or so (unfortunately every game I play insists on turning off downloads when you start playing them) but will definitely be getting this, even though I've played it to the point I'm surprised the disc hasn't melted on my Saturn.

I just finished playing it and reached one of the endings.

It's definately weird, the choice system really changes up the story and takes you into completely different directions. Not to mention every choice has consequences, be it good or bad.
