Title: E3 2011 Topic of Legends, Moving Your Body and Googly Eyes
Post by: Sega Uranus on May 24, 2011, 06:35:17 pm
E3 is two weeks away, I am shocked no one made a topic yet!

What do you all expect? Besides, Shenmue III I mean!

My predictions:

---Microsoft:

- Says how great Xbox Live is, makes fun of PlayStation Network, but does not drop any names.

- Gears of War 3 campaign shown off, 4 player and score attack details shown off, like the Bayonetta stuff they added.

- Modern Warfare 3 demonstrated, Microsoft points out they get the first map pack again.

- Skyrim demonstrated, exclusive content revealed.

- Tomb Raider reboot trailer and then some guy from Square Enix Europe talks about it.

- Star Wars Kinect is shown, coming in a few months.

- Forza 4/Forza World shown off. They emphasize certain features that have been standard in the series since it started out.

- Project Kingdoms renamed, footage is shown.

- Kinect montage featuring some games we are kind of interested in, like Child of Eden, Project D and Rise of Nightmares.

- New or old Rareware IP teased, probably only for Kinect. Maybe named Googly Eyes as an early development joke?

- Kinect Gears of War rail shooter revealed, demoed, probably looks way cooler than it plays.

- Dance Central 2 is revealed in demonstration, someone embarrasses themselves.

- Sesame Street: Once Upon A Monster is demonstrated, actually looks really awesome and we all feel bad.

- XBLA montage. Maybe Gunstringger gameplay demonstration?

- Annoying Kinect montage with families playing together and laughing.

- Skype integration shown off by two annoying girls again. If one is the kind of hot Kinect Show girl, I will not complain.

- More Japan exclusive releases announced for Games on Demand service, maybe Akai Katana?

- Talk about how Netflix and other similar stuff is the future, new similar stuff announced.

- Halo 1 remake revealed, new map pack for Reach discussed.

- New Alan Wake game teased. Probably an XBLA and Kinect game.

- Zipline Kinect FPS project teased. Microsoft makes a big deal out of it, but nobody cares.

- BigPark shows the project that they have been working on, nobody wants it.

- Peter Molyneux comes on stage, says some stuff about emotions or something, hints at a new Fable, then leaves.

- Someone best known for making PlayStation games comes on stage and announces a big exclusive feature/game.

- Batman: Arkham City has Xbox 360 exclusive features, gameplay shown off or something.

- Metal Gear Rising is demonstrated.

- Something Portal related (it is on their invitation letter).

- Something unexpected happens!

---Nintendo:

- Reggie comes on stage smiling like a motherfucker and makes a few PlayStation Network and PlayStation Move jokes without dropping names.

- They mention how fast 3DS is selling, how DS and Wii have broken some records and show some charts. 3D is the future but not really or something.

- Wii Play Motion gameplay demonstration.

- The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword demonstration, still looks awful but people like me still eat it up. A trailer is shown after or before, revealed to be coming in a few months.

- They talk about how many great Wii games have come out over the years and say a ton more are coming, but only announce two and then show a montage of games over the years.

- They talk about Virtual Console, how games are still coming out (Chrono Trigger was just released) and how 3DS is going to get some stuff too, maybe have another montage.

- Big Wii game that is already out in Japan gets announced for everywhere else. PLZ BE THE LAST STORY.

- DSi price drop, maybe even 3DS gets one too (the latter is VERY UNLIKELY).

- Mario Kart 3D demonstrated with a whole group of people, maybe some in another country?

- Mario 3DS gameplay trailer revealed, people freak out.

- A third party shows off a big 3DS game, maybe Sonic Generations?

- One or two old IPs come back on 3DS or Cafe, people freak out.

- Pikmin 3 finally revealed, probably not for Wii. Maybe Cafe launch title.

- Project Cafe revealed, huge discussion on it takes place

- Tons of games for Project Cafe revealed, given trailers

- Nintendo reveals Project Cafe is getting a bunch of ports of other games, like Modern Warfare 3 maybe?

- Miyamoto runs on stage and spins around in circles while talking about his dog or something, plays a newly announced game with someone else.

- New Smash Brothers title for Cafe closes the show. More third party characters maybe?

- Something unexpected happens!

---Sony:

- Someone (maybe a group of people?) at Sony apologizes for the PlayStation Network outages, but assures everyone that it is normal again, and that it is better than ever.

- inFamous 2 demonstration, more gameplay details revealed, last trailer shown.

- Uncharted 3 campaign and multiplayer shown off, new trailer.

- Someone from Media Molecule comes on stage and talks about how they are revolutionary or something, Little Big Planet 2 DLC revealed, 3D being patched.

- Resistance 3 demonstration. Hopefully they do not get stuck behind a couch again.

- Some PlayStation Portable games shown off on PlayStation 3, God of War Portable Collection announced, dated for the end of the year.

- PSP steps its game up. But not really. Montage shown off.

- ExperiaPlay makes an appearance, but no one cares.

- Kevin Butler gets on the stage to waste time and pretends to be funny.

- Someone best known for making Xbox 360 games comes on stage and announces an exclusive feature/game.

- 3D and Move support demonstrated for at least three games.

- New features for PlayStation Plus announced.

- Netflix and other similar services discussed, PlayStation 3 to be the first platform to have 3D support on some of them.

- Ratshit and Tanked demonstrated with multiple people playing.

- Sly Cooper 4 teased.

- Twisted Metal demoed again, new modes shown off, coming soon.

- StarHawk demoed with a bunch of people in multiplayer.

- Team ICO games (collection and TLG) dated.

- Some Move games, maybe a montage? Sports Champions 2 maybe?

- Agent? lol

- More PlayStation 2 collections announced. PLZ JAK AND DAXTER

- WipEout Trinity teased, is a retail game

- Final Fantasy XIV still coming, probably will not suck as much.

- Big reveal that most of the games shown off so far have 3D and Move support.

- NGP stuff. LBP, Uncharted, ModNation, Invizimals 2, maybe God of War?

- Something unexpected happens!

Sony has confirmed that they will have a 5 hour presser, biggest E3 ever.

NGP hype no doubt.

So very true, Sanus.

I'm guessing the Kinect Star Wars game will release the same day as the Star Wars blu-ray set (Sept. 16th) or the same day as Clone Wars season 3 blu-ray (Oct. 25th). Lucasfilm doubles up games and movie releases all the time.

One thing I might not be surprised about is if Super Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is revealed. Some things I'd hope are if it's both DLC and retail like Capcom's doing w/SSF4:AE, a version for Project Cafe, an Ace Attorney courtroom stage, and I guess Frank West and Elektra as playable characters.

Then I don't think I'll be watching it, especially when their conference last year felt too long for me.

I'm only watching Sony and Nintendo's conference. Seems that MS is going to be the same thing as last year, aka nothing that appeals to me.

This is how Sony E3 will start

    *kevin butler walks on stage*
    *crowd cheers*

KB: You know what Nintendo and the XBOX have in common?
    *waits a few seconds*
    KB: THEY HAVE NO GAEMS!

*crowd cheers as the stage goes dark and a reel of upcoming PlayStation exclusives plays*

*The reel ends and Jack Tretton walks out as the stage goes bright again*

JT: Welcome and thank you for coming tonight. I promise you will not be disappointed.
*starts talking about PlayStation sales and that lasts for about 20 minutes*

and yeah.. that's how it will begin!

I just can't express how unbelievably lame it is that Kevin Butler is somehow the Playstation mascot.  It's been a rough era for Sony.  But I hope to hear some good news regarding their PSP to PS3 'remasters....'  specifically, Valkyria Chronicles 2 and 3.

But Kevin Butler is AWESOME! He says what we're all thinking! Remember when he bashed M$ in that one commercial, or said it was lame to own an iPhone? LOL it was great! He is a true gamer.

I'd like to see Segata Sanshiro slice the top of Kevin Butler's skull off and use it as a yakisoba bowl.

Watching people cry over Kevin Butler is funny.

Watching Microsoft trying to copy him over the past year and a half has been the most ironic part. Sony finally got a good marketing campaign going and the haters come out.

George likes the Kevin Butler campaign? All respect lost. :(

I should note: this is just want Sony wants. They're tearing us apart Lisa!

Let's just watch youtube commercials of old SEGA ads and forget about the present.

I find the campaign that doesn't take itself serious is better than a campaign that is fucking stupid (see Gears of War Madworld adverts).

What is bad about his ads? Don't get me wrong, I hated his E3 speech. But you guys are acting like he is worse than the holocaust. Basically acting like Fluffy when he found out you liked CSI.

I totally agree with you here George. I did not like his E3 speech at all. The commercials however do get the occasional chuckle from me.

Post by: Barry the Nomad on May 26, 2011, 02:54:21 pm
I don't have fluffy levels of hatred towards the campaign, however I am not a fan of them for a few reasons:

• Too few versions of the commercials on at once. There might be many over time, but I seem to see the same two commercials for 2-3 months and it can become very grating. Same goes for some other campaigns, it's not just Sony. T-Mobile's pink dress woman and Geiko's narrator guy are equally annoying.
• Far too much focus at thumbing their nose at the competition
• Marcus. Even KB fans hated that little shit
• Meme laughs and animated gif fodder are more important than the PS3 itself. Not enough focus on the product.

Were they to have more versions airing at the same time and focused more on the Sony side of things (and less Wii, 360, iPhone comparing) I might enjoy them a bit more.

Post by: George on May 26, 2011, 03:04:42 pm
Marcus =/= KB. Different systems, different campaigns. Segata isn't focused on product either. Literally set up the same "MAIN CHARACTER COMES IN, DOES SOMETHING, SHOW GAME IN THE END"

Its basic marketing.

As for 'thumbing their nose at the competition' in the ads. Which one? I don't recall.
Title: Re: E3 2011 Topic of Legends, Moving Your Body and Googly Eyes
Post by: Barry the Nomad on May 26, 2011, 03:30:11 pm
We're probably getting more into this than needed, but in any case...

I had thought Marcus and KB were quite connected, they shared a commercial together:
[youtube:1sa9j7ei]mOGcRvUvj3U[/youtube:1sa9j7ei]
KB was the catalyst for Marcus.

Sort of the Scrappy-Doo of the KB ads. Bringing the whole show down. Damn Marcus.

Quote
Its basic marketing.

I know it's basic marketing, never said it wasn't. I just said that I do not care for the campaign, not a fan of it. If others are, cool for them, but I'm not.

Quite a few KB ads mock the competition. The Move ads mocked the Wii and Kinect, the PSP ads mocked the App Store. Personally, I don't like this sort of method. I know many campaigns outside of Sony do it (even SEGA did), but I personally don't like that tactic. It doesn't work on me. I prefer ads focus on the product. I don't mean simply show clips of the games and how the hardware works, I mean keep the ad focused on just the product even when involving silly mascots. Segata did this quite effectively. Segata was all about the Saturn, 24/7. He didn't appear and mock Playstation users, instead he pushed the Saturn as hard as he could which in turn made viewers forget about the competition and just focus on the SEGA product. Rather than targeting the compeition, Segata targeted anybody who wasn't playing a Saturn at that exact moment. Screw playing baseball outside, you must play SEGA Saturn!
Title: Re: E3 2011 Topic of Legends, Moving Your Body and Googly Eyes
Post by: George on May 26, 2011, 03:37:58 pm
The only Move ad that mocked 'Kinect' was one that fanboys took offensive when it was mocking themselves.

I guess you hated the SEGA does what Nintendon't ads as well?
Title: Re: E3 2011 Topic of Legends, Moving Your Body and Googly Eyes
Post by: Barry the Nomad on May 26, 2011, 03:50:28 pm
Really? I thought it was pretty apparent the ad targets Kinect:

[youtube:o8xaandx]Z_XibBI98TY[/youtube:o8xaandx]

Pointing out buttons, "catching a big red ball", "who wants to pretend their hand is a gun, what it this third grade?". In another Move ad they feature boxing, and KB mimes a sissy slapping fit implying how Kinect boxing games control.

Now as a consumer who owns Kinect, and has an interest in Move, this sort of commercial actually works against me as it both attempts to insult me and in turn makes me less interested in Move.

Again, that's why I prefer the ads that simply focus on the product itself and leave silly fanboy wars out of the campaign.

Quote

Not at all, I loved the song.

What happened to the SEGA press conferences? I'd think this year would actually be a good one to have a little speech. Announce more Generations stages, show off some PG titles, etc. Ubisoft did one last year at E3 and it sucked (aside from Rayman and Child of Eden), SEGA needs to show devs how its done.

They blow all their money on TGS probably.

Ubisoft has a some pretty good games this year.

- Children of Eden
- Rayman Orgins
- Assassins Creed Revelation
- From Dust

Everything else they have is really shit. Ubisoft needs to focus more on quality over quantity.

Does the Metal Gear HD collection include Peace Walker?

edit: just searched a bit

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

VERY COOL! I've only played MGS1 and rented MGS2 for a long weekend. This would be a great collection to pick up! I especially look forward to the Snatcher references.  :afroman:

Its up on PSN already.

Few more rumors and announcements going in!

SONY

Announces Payday: The Heist. 4 player co-op FPS that will allow you to play with PC/PS3 players. It is a PSN/Digital download game.

[youtube:1dtmrws4]gc752Yc0NAA[/youtube:1dtmrws4]

Sony announces Papo & Yo for PSN. Part of their 'pub fund', this has funded games like Joe Danger and that was awesome.

[youtube:1dtmrws4]ZUJt10Ng4y8[/youtube:1dtmrws4]

Sony announced Starhawk about a week ago. A sequel to Warhawk, this game will have a full fledged single player mode, unlike Warhawk that was online only.

[youtube:1dtmrws4]0hSAes_IRTY[/youtube:1dtmrws4]

Announced NGP games so far:

- Uncharted: Golden Abyss (http://http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/06/02/ngp-previews-let%E2%80%99s-talk-games-starting-with-uncharted/)
- Super Stardust Ultra (http://http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/06/02/ngp-preview-super-stardust-delta/)
- Hustle Kings (http://http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/06/02/ngp-preview-hustle-kings/)
- Sound Shapes (http://http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/06/02/ngp-introducing-sound-shapes/)
- Wipeout (working title) (http://http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/06/02/wipeout-your-ps3-opponents-on-ngp/)

Wipeout on NGP can be played online against PS3 players.

Microsoft

Seems that Microsoft is saving everything they have for E3, they have been really tight lipped about anything so far and I expect them to try to surprise to hell out of everyone. This one slipped out as a rumor:

Microsoft Xbox LIVE Diamond subscription IPTV tipped for E3 2011 (http://http://www.slashgear.com/microsoft-xbox-live-diamond-subscription-iptv-tipped-for-e3-2011-03156696/)

Should be cool for US people and shouldn't effect the Gold members. An all around positive move for everyone. Sony has something like this in Europe. Though not as integrated as this rumor seems to make it.

Ultimately though I believe whenever Fox News and similar outlets do stuff like that it boosts the sales of the title rather than diminishing it.

More Halo on the way (http://http://kotaku.com/5808887/microsofts-e3-2011-website-outs-halo-4-and-more).

Not surprised, but I am interested in how well they'll keep it going without Bungie. An HD remake of Halo could be cool, especially if it plays/looks like Reach. A new game though... I'm hoping they come up with a new character, maybe who has to search for Master Chief. I'd rather they leave Chief out of it, but doubt it since he's their money maker.

I'm not a huge fan of the series, but I do enjoy the games. The Bungie games offered features unheard of in console games, so I hope 343 can keep that trend going.

Jesus, that was perhaps one of the single worst presentations I've ever seen.

Really, a buttload of Kinect kids games in a presentation that's generally intented for a more mature audience?

Some of those games would be embarrasing, even if they were shown on Ellen!

I wasn't a fan of that part either, but I know it wasn't presented for me. It's to MS' benefit to present this stuff now, so all the press at the event can spread the word to the parents shelling out cash for their kids. Most general press doesn't care about Halo, Call of Duty, God of War, they want to talk about unique experiences that are presentable to all ages.

I didn't say "the press," but I am referring to major and local news outlets. There are many different reporters/newscasters that cover this event that aren't focused on gaming and only feature generalized information. If all you do is feed them "mature" games, then they're less likely to promote anything from the event. Having worked for a couple local news stations, I can tell you that these "kiddie" Kinect games will get longer coverage on morning segments, and increase sales when parents see what their kids can do with the 360 and Kinect. Mature games get quick blips about release dates and sales numbers, but no live demos or reviews.

Showing some variety was in Microsoft's favor and they did at least show better examples of why Kinect was created and deserves to be further supported. I didn't personally see much to get excited about, but I'm not really expecting Microsoft to always carry the torch in software.

Ellen, The Today Show, PBS and the likes would be a far more appropriate stage to showcase some of those titles and it would certainly get far more feedback, than showing it to game journalists.

The main problem with the Kinect's limitations for hardcore gamers is crystal clear from the get-go, it does not work with 3rd or 1st person shooters, nor RPGs or action-oriented games, many sports titles, without them being on-rails, at least not right now.

The Kinect was programmed for the people to stay roughly in the same spot(or in close range), because you still can't make the characters go foward or backwards in a three dimensional space.

Kinect might have some interesting functionalities in adventure games, which could work, but it is such a niche market, even within the more hardcore crowd, that developement costs might be counter-productive.

The Wii U looks nice and all(just when you think Xbox 360 would be laziest console name ever), but there's a functionality to resume play using the screen, when Dad whens to use the TV. I have a TV in a bedroom, so there's completely worthless feature for me.

It's a funny contrast, Microsoft has no clue what to do with Kinect outside of mini-games and some game integration and Nintendo, on the other hand, has finally arrived in 2006.

I think the Wii U is probably the most terrible looking console in the last 10 years.

Here is some Reggie interview bits:

"High-def graphics, got it. Online capabilities, got it.

We're showing the online in a few days.

It's single-touch (In response to a question from Geoff).

The Wii was not unsuccessful with the hardcore.

The system's gonna be 1080p. Tick that box, it's done.

We're not talking about price yet.

It's all going to be driven by the game.

[The HD Zelda video] was an experience. I don't like the term 'tech-demo'.

We're very good a keeping secrets.

[Hitting 45 million sales before announcing WiiU] was just a nice, figurative conversation. (The Wii has not yet sold 48m, yet WiiU has been announced).

They're going to buy it for the price point (strong hint a competitive pricing).

Will it have a competitive price? Absolutely!

It will have a fantastic value.

You'll be able to play those Wii games, but with a new experience.

By the end of the week, we'll show the WiiU online.

Geoff: You're gonna have some big launch first-party games? (Reggie doesn't answer)

[About the console]: We're not emphasising the console. It's a box. We're focusing on the controller.

It will not be Blu-ray"

- Wii finally catching up to PS3/360.

I always found reggie to be... well not an idiot but just kind of a moron.

The console itself, is i think really awesome. At first when they showed it on the screen I was like wtf is that huge thing, but then it ended up being pretty small in the palm of peoples hands.

Honestly I am a sucker for nintendo franchises, and HD graphics is just something we haven't seen happening in full potential with their franchises so that's a thing I am really anticipating.

I can see alot of inovation be created with the WII U. Seriously that new controller could add so much inovation to gaming but also how browsing works and all that. I can vaguely see it's potential but all in all, i'm just glad that I can have great nintendo franchises AND great HD third party(defenitly SEGA's) games on one console.

I think i'll actually buy it so yeah, i'm sold.

I think it's hilarious that Nintendo just made THQ's uDraw tablet incredibly obsolete.

The Wii iPad looks cool and all, but the biggest concern for me is that it's going to be a bitch to use like a controller. It looks huge and not ergonomic at all. Hopefully I'm wrong, since the screen in the controller is a cool feature. It was also great to see them back up claims of going back to hardcore with all the games like Batman, Ghost Recon etc coming to the platform now.

The thing is though, would I rather play batman on Wii U with that funky controller, or play it on the more comfortable looking 360 controller with the same graphics? I'm leaning to 360 at the moment, even if the WiiU has the funky screen.

EDIT: BEst thing to come out of E3 so far:

I'm actually pretty impressed with the Wii U.  Having the option to stream the game to the controller would really come in handy if, say, you're sick in bed, or the living room is otherwise occupied and can't be used for gaming.  I've always thought someone should sell a peripheral for the iPad and iPod Touch/iPhone giving them physical controls just like this device.  If there's good Sega games for it, I'll have to seriously consider getting it.

As for whether it's compatible with the GameCube, that's a great question... it is compatible with the Wii, which was compatible with the GameCube, so it definitely seems possible.

I'm sure a lot of folks are wondering about transferring over their virtual console games from Wii...

Streaming games isn't all that great. You will miss the bigger TV. A few games I had on streamed on PSP. It was a feature I used... like 7 times..

Also new firmware on PS3 allows you to back up your PSP save data on to it... Useful.

Funny, I saw a ton of Nintendo fanboys going "OMG THE PORTS ON THE WII U LOOK SO MUCH BETTER THAN PS3/360"

... wait. Graphics don't matter.

I think the Wii U had a bad showing for me. All they showed so far is the gimmick (controller). Ports you can get on current consoles (360/PS3) and some logos excite gamers?

Yeah I guess so. The technology is still impressive though.

Where the Wii brought alot of skeptecism and not always wprked properly all the time, this new nintendo console and it's controller don't really have that imo. I think really this new nintendo console and it's idea are great through and through. The controller with the screen... I love it.

And those nintendo fanboys.. I couldn't care less about the way they defended the wii with it's outdated hardware and non accurate controler. This new console imo really shows potential.

I just saw impressions at a dutch website which I really consider as a reliable source. They were all like impressed when they actually got the controller in their hand. They didn't expect the comfort and it to fit so well in their hands.

The way it's looking now is that while microsoft thinks they got the casual market with their kinect and they seem to be focussing on mostly that, nintendo with it's Wii U just wiped all of it away. Casual market will go back and plus the hardcore gamers will have a reason to go for the full package. Not only that, but the controller will add to the hardcore experiences while kinect falls in the same trap like the wii remote. It's a flawed technology with a flawed outcome.

None of the gimmicks they showed have been shown real time. I streamed gameplay from the PS3 to the PSP before and it never felt quite right. Not to mention you could tell you where playing a stream.

The video they showed is not real time. That is the issue, they are promising a ton of stuff.. like the Wii.

I cannot imagine or see anything wrong at the moment. If there is something broken about the technology, we will find out eventually. But if the concept works well, I can see alot of gameplay elements created for games like zelda for instance. I don't know if you ever played ocarina of  time, but theres this magnifying glass that shows invicable stuff. This new controller could be used as the magnifying glass instead with your controller aimed towards the tv. Also other gadgets could make use of the second screen.

The thing is that I personally can't come up with the ideas, but I am sure that we will be surprised with some games and the way they are going to incorporate this new technology. Online gaming like for instance phantasy star online would really work well with this second screen. You would never have to bring up menu's and that sorta stuff. Shortcuts for techniques will all be displayed on the screen and used by simple taps.

Lol, I sound like a fanboy. No way I could be a nintendofanboy as a SEGA fan but i'm just simply impressed. It has great potential and nintendo may have actually set a new boundary because i'm almost sure that this will be the next generation of gaming. The next xbox and ps will almost defenitly follow nintendo in this new way of gaming in a way or another

Edit: Oh wow I hadn't thought of it but this may be the first console where u can hide ure stuff in a game. It reminds me of sonic shuffle where you needed 2 memory cards to hide ure cards. Also poker anyone? First console to encourage a game of poker

Hey assholes! Mesa back!

As I was away from a computer for the weekend, I checked up on live blogs via the iPod and saw a lot of mini videos from all the press shows. My thoughts:

Before I even mention the big three press shows, HOLY SHIT Sonic Generations City Escape looks beyond awesome! It was actually the most surprising and joyful moments to come out of E3 for me. Love the "wanted" and "missing" signs for the MIA secondary characters.

I enjoyed Microsoft's press show. No real "holy shit" moments, but being a Kinect owner I was happy to see that a lot of the promises were coming true. More hardcore games, more menu integration, better search. Ryse, Rise of Nightmares and Fable all look very cool. The Star Wars fanboy in me geeked out over the prequel era Cloud City. The podracer segment reminded me of the SEGA Podracing arcade game. Halo HD looks great. Not a huge fan of the series, but I did love the first game. Overall, I can see why Kinect haters would dislike it, as even non-Kinect titles got a Kinect nod via Kinect capabilities. Still, aside from those damn kids playing the Disney game, it wasn't offensive to me. Perhaps MS just played it too safe. Would have loved to hear a price drop or a hint at the next console.

Sony's NGP/Vita looks awesome! Seems to have the best features a portable could have. Backwards compatible, great graphics, touch screen, good size, great lineup of games. I also was pleased to see that they "rebooted" their handheld line. As much as I don't care for the Vita name (makes me think of a vitamin water), I'm glad they didn't just label it as another PSP. The price is great, makes the 3DS look like kiddy crap (which I was considering up til now). The PS3 stuff didn't really blow me away, basically more of the same stuff like last year. Not that that's a bad thing. Really wish The Last Guardian was shown off. :P This show really was more of a Sony VS. Nintendo show, rather than the Sony VS. Microsoft show as seen last year. In my opinion, Sony totally beat Nintendo on the handheld front. Overall, PS3 stuff didn't wow me, but I liked the Vita stuff.

God dammit Nintendo! I was actually positive about the new system. I was thinking it would be just as it has been in the past. New console, new concept, NEW NAME. You know, like N64 -> Gamecube -> Wii. Instead, they go the Wii 2 route and replace the "2" with a letter that sounds like "U". Wii U? Really? Sounds like a University that Nintendo sends their developers to. Really awful name. So essentially, in Nintendoland: DS = handheld, Wii = console. I don't think I'll ever warm up to the name.

As for the concept, I'm not too impressed. The controller screen is far too big. If the TV was in use, I'd rather just not play a game than have to boot up a mini screen. The appeal of an HD home console is the big screen and great graphics, so why would I relegate myself to a small screen? Might as well read a book, play an iPad, go on the computer or just wait for whoever is using the TV to be done. None of the games have impressed me. Mostly ports thus far, and the big guns surly won't all be available at launch. By the time the Wii U has a strong first party library (main series Mario, HD Zelda) the next gen Sony/MS consoles will be incoming.

3DS was okay, but nothing blew me away. Mostly sequels or semi-sequels to titles that I don't care for (Mario Kart, Luigi's Mansion) and lots of ports. Sonic Generations 3DS and Metal Gear are the only real titles catching my attention.

Out of all the Nintendo stuff, I'm actually most excited for the Wii titles. Kirby Wii and Skyward Sword look like fun. Probably won;t get them on release, but they'll be fun titles to pick up after the prices go down on them.

Overall, Vita and the Kinect stuff were my favorite bits. Vita as it looks like a proper handheld with very few (if any) issues. Just want to hear the battery life. Kinect because I already own one and am excited about the upcoming games and features.

Thanks CT, good to be back!

Going back to the Wii U, I think my beef with the name (aside from it being awkward to write and read) is that Nintendo hasn't moved beyond the name "Wii". I know the NES was followed by the SNES, but I don't think the Wii is worthy of a "SNES" followup console. Didn't Nintendo themselves admit that the Wii turned off hardcore gamers and that they were going to win them back? So to do so, they keep the name and aesthetic of the Wii for their next console. :P So now we have Playstation, XBOX and Wii as the multiple generation spanning consoles? I don't know, it just sucks that the name "Wii" is sticking around for yet another generation and is probably the brand name for Nintendo's home consoles for the foreseeable future.

Seriously, the dude said "Aliens: Colonial Marines". So 15th century European marines?

Yeah, she was very cool. I just love the SEGA ladies! ^_^

Is it backwards compatible with the GamCube?

Turns out, it is not backwards compatible with the Gamecube.

One interesting rumor that I read today indicates that the Wii U controller is not showing a streamed image of the game, but actually has its own memory and processor and is running the game, which is being wirelessly loaded from the disc in the console.  But this hasn't been officially confirmed...

I think the Wii U's controller looks like it could be a bit disorienting for me, hopefully I'm wrong.
Still, does anyone else think it looks a bit big for a controller?

Not as bad as this:

But it does look a little wide. Can't say for sure until I hold one myself (that's what she said!)

Ubisoft actually impressed the shit out of me at E3. They have come a long way from being the joke me and Sharky always make them out to be.

Outland PSN demo was awesome. Though I think they are going retail crazy at full price. I think Child of Eden and Rayman Origins will suffer for being 'full priced' titles.

Hopefully CoE and Rayman will do well at a $49.99 price point, and perhaps will get the VT4 treatment and get first week discounts.

Virtua Tennis is a big seller in Europe, Rayman 2D was a good seller... in like 1996. Rez never did amazingly well.

They are niche.

Gunstringer coming to RETAIL!!! :D
Yeah I heard about that, seems like it's coming in a pack with some others? Or am I thinking of something else?

I think you're thinking of the Splosion Man/Limbo/Trials HD 3 pack. I think Gunstringer will be on it's own. Just hope they have enough content to justify a $50 price tag (usual Kinect title price). Unless they release it for $40 like Halo HD will be. Knowing Twisted Pixel, they'll probably cram in a lot of bonus content and (fingers crossed) characters from their other games. Would be cool to see Splosion Man and Captain Smiley puppets with unique weapons.

So now E3 is over, I'd like to know what your highlights are for this year's E3.

My highlight of this years E3 is defenitly Assassins Creed Revelation's trailer.

[youtube:3pw3b8mp]y8SgbTbozG4[/youtube:3pw3b8mp]

I favoured Altaïr from the first assassins creed alot more so I cannot wait to experience the story.

Altair was a boring character, especially in the first one. Wish they re-released it with an actually good narrative like Part 2.

Assassins Creed Revelations trailer can't be my highlight just because its CGI. I hate when they put CGI trailers up. Vita and Uncharted 3 gameplay where amazing.

Same here. I don't get why people are excited about Halo 4 based on a teaser that reveals... nothing. At least the Halo 3 teaser showed the bubble shield and a battle on Earth, but even that was weak compared to the incredible in-game demo reveal of Halo 2.

Then again, I did become interested in Overstrike just from the trailer, but that was a well made cinematic. Insomniac is no slouch though, so we'll see.

I didn't watch MS's conference, but all 3 conferences weren't too much different from last year, except not as good.

I think all of the big three had good showings, very diverse list of stuff, some awful games from everyone too, but mostly I greatly enjoyed the whole event.

Microsoft focused a lot on Kinect stuff, which is understandable, and it was nice to see it coming to Mass Effect 3 and Binary Domain, but I have a hard time wanting the platform still. I was pretty impressed with the trailer for Kinect Star Wars and a few other Kinect-only games, but I could never see myself playing most. Tomb Raider looked great, the demo of Gears of War 3 was pretty lame but I know the game will be awesome, and I was honestly really shocked by Halo 4's announcement! I never expected it so soon. Not sure what to think of it yet, but I am excited. It is lame that most of the games I am most interested in were not really mentioned, like XBLA stuff and what have you, but it is all still coming.

Initially I was super pissed about Halo Anniversary, but now that the full news has come in... I am very excited! The campaign is literally just a new set of models running over the original game and has a button to switch between the two, ala Monkey Island HD, which is brilliant because I love Halo 1's physics and level design, but almost all of it is pretty bad for multiplayer in comparison to the later games in the series. The multiplayer stuff is all for Reach. You can play it on the disc or just upload it to your HDD to play through Reach itself. This is great news for me, because while I love Halo 3 and Halo Reach, the fact they sort of have their own communities really bugs me, I was worried this would be separate them even more.

The pricing really impressed me. $40 at launch, might have to get it this year.

Sony started off really strong with a fairly respectable mentioning of the "Elephant in the room" and especially with Uncharted 3, which I expected to be all kinds of awesome, but when the boat tipped over I honestly shouted "AUUUUUGHHHHWWHWHWH HOLY SHIT!". After that a lot of their showing kind of just went by without me caring much about what they had to show, Sly Cooper 4 having time travel really got me excited though. Otherwise, I thought PlayStation Vita looked cool, but their demos kind of lost me. The Uncharted game in particular looks extremely lame in comparison to even the first game. I really wanted to see them showing off some tech demos using it's features (especially the touch pad on the back, I think that has a lot of potential), but I guess actual games are needed to sell people on them.

No Jak and Daxter HD collection yet. :(

Nintendo had the strongest first party lineup of the big three, almost every game for all the platforms they have looked wonderful. Their third party support is weak as always, but once they finally showed off the Wii U I was fairly surprised to see Batman Arkham City and DarkSiders 2 there.

Their new console impressed me in some ways, but I can see why people are getting so upset. I cannot wait to see what people do with the hardware. I honestly am not interested in buying it at all, but as a game designer myself, I think it has an incredible amount of potential.

Wii U is literally the worst game console name I have ever heard though. I thought numerically naming your consoles was stupid, and using random words or phrases like 360 and Vita was retarded, but just adding a "U" to the title is the new low. I was even one of the people who thought Wii was a great name, even!

As for the third parties, EA had the worst show of the lot with nonstop CG trailers and literally the worst looking racing game I have seen in ages with Need For Speed: The Run, but I am extremely excited for Mass Effect 3, so I have a hard time writing them off completely. Even me being such a big Insomniac hater, their game looked like it had a lot of potential!

I knew Ubisoft would have a killer lineup, but I consider them the overall winner this year. I thought everything they showed looked awesome or at least very cool. Rayman Origins especially looks outstanding.

Although neither had their own conference, SEGA and Konami has stellar lineups. Everything from SEGA really had me drooling except Anarchy Reigns and I have been wanting to play through MGS2 and 3 again and especially their  rereleases (Never got to play Substanance), and was pissed Peace Walker was exclusive to PSP, so this is great for me. It is a shame MGS1 is not in the collection, but I assume that has a lot to do with it being much harder to make it in HD than the other games. Twin Snakes has Nintendo stuff in it, so that is not happening either.

I love the industry right now. Screw the haters, right now is such a great time for videogames. Every console has such a different and unique approach to the medium that creativity and styles can flourish in so many wonderful ways. Sonic finally has a game that looks to be at the very least "Very good" after all these years, the big three all have their own huge markets and have opened up new ones completely and Duke Nukem Forever was at it's last event as it comes out in a matter of days! What a year 2011 is for games.

Nice job, Jeremy.

Lol, yeah I sorta get what you mean guys, but I  think this is just a personal preference.

Altaïr was indeed a boring character and they hadn't really expanded alot on his character, but there was something about him that I liked which i can't describe. I am glad that we might see them expand abit more about him.

I also agree that CGI trailers suck. The gameplay footage hadn't really impressed me "that" much. It was a bit over the top so. But in assassins creed case, the story is the biggest selling point fot me and I think the trailer does a good job in pulling me in to wanna see what's gonna happen. Ezio seems older and that place where they planned to throw him down was that hideout place (forgot it's name) where altaïr used to get all his asignments to kill.

I'm with you CrazyTails, I love Altair as well. Also, the name of the city was Masyaf. ;)

The Uncharted 3 gameplay they showed at the Sony Conference reminded me of one of my favorite sections from Tomb Raider: Underworld. It's really neat.

You know, I'm starting to notice a couple of things at these last E3 events, ever since the show returned to it's original format in 2009: First off, I feel like there seems to be a gap that's just getting bigger and bigger which each passing E3, this is both noticable with game studios and game journalists. On one hand, game studios seem to be getting a little non-chalant about getting coverage, after all, I subscribe about 5 video game-related channels and many of them show roughly the same interviews over and over again, maybe with slightly different questions, but above all, the things that gets to me is how most of the major demos showing are, more often than not, are basically Ubisoft, EA, Activision and maybe Capcom. Sega's been a bit MIA, but Square and Namco Bandai have also been almost invisible save for the Tomb Raider showing. E3 is starting to feel like the European Union, in some aspects, most of the wealthier states can just push their weight around, while everyone else just fights for table scraps of any the bearest minimal spotlight. Perhaps Game Trailers should be awarded for going that extra mile, since they did cover a good chunck of games.

But back to the actual games, I didn't expect to see a PS1 era game at E3 this year(***coff*** X-men:Destiny ***coff***).

The reason the interviews feel the same is because publishers make appointments with the journalists, give them times to meet, and let a group of them ask questions.
