Title: Have you been banned at a forum?
Post by: cube_b3 on July 07, 2011, 03:12:37 pm
I have.

I am a huge fan of Depeche Mode, the Synth band from UK.

I was registered at their forums, wasn't the most active forum member visit sparsely only when I had question regarding a release, song, or making requests for music videos.

A few years back Dave Gahan the lead vocalist from the band released his second solo album, the web master for DM made Gahan's website as well, I made a post stating the site wasn't as good as his other websites and the lyrics section, which has been a part of all previous sites is absent and I stated the most frequent reason to visit the site is to check on the lyrics.
http://hourglass.davegahan.com/ (http://hourglass.davegahan.com/)
He posted stating the lyrics section isn't important, you get them with the CD and so on... but he was like I'll add it when the album comes out.

Month later the album came out, I went back the section hadn't been added bumped the thread.

He said, he isn't adding it.

I called him a lier as he had stated he would.

He deleted the thread altogether.

I got pissed and wrote an open letter, where I demanded respect and an apology "as I was a stake holder the most important one 'consumer' who has invested whole heartedly on count less records, cd's, t-shirts etc and fans shouldn't be treated so disrespectfully."

In response, I was banned.

It changed me entire perception, I never reregistered to the website or anything. I did take my open letter and post it at a fan site, where I was informed the guy is basically an asshole and I was #1000 something who had been banned.

It made me like the band less, as it turns out several people who have complained. Journalists at press confrences criticizing the website and they or anyone at the label haven't acted.

Now I rarely ever visit their website and I am not even as big of a fan as I once was.

________________________________________

I don't understand how people can be so shallow and keep registering at websites, they have been banned at or keep bitching about it to the world.

If SEGA were to screw me over in some way, I would ideally like to report to higher authorities but if they wouldn't seem to care then I would take my investments elsewhere. I wouldn't still dance around them and be a supporter or a member, you know.

_________________________________________

So I thought we could share stories like this and try to see things through others eyes. I know a few staffers have received the boot from a few sites and i'd like it if they could share their stories and after thoughts as well.

I got banned twice in the same day on a message board, I go to.

Kinda strange, this was back in the day when I had too much free time and I would spent a full hour writing movie reviews. Nowadays, I don't even bother...

I was using a image host that's no longer around, and I used the embedded code that they gave me.

It was around 2008, the message board Chupa-mos.com changed it's admin and I got two warnings over, I had written about 9 reviews back then, using that image host that nobody until then had an issue. Then I got a 1 year ban notice, I sent a mail to the admin about it, explaining my situation, ironically that was when I discovered Tinypic because she recommended it to me, since there was no link "back to us" code in it.

So how did it make you feel?
You were pretty brief.

Hmm, I think I got banned from a Nintendo forum once. They don't like realists in those things.

@cube_b3

Oh, right, I kinda got sidetracked. Yeah, I was pretty ticked off, since I was member there since 2005. It's the largest general purporse Portuguese Message Board and my ban just felt so random. Also I had been writing these reviews for a long time and nobody mentioned this once. So I suddenly got banned over the rules that been changed for stuff that I had written so long ago.

I think it was also the reason why I don't put that much effort into writing movie reviews anymore.

I've never been banned from a forum, but I try not to stir up any trouble either.

hahahahhaa

The Nintendo fans were just too easy to annoy over there. This is back when I was an ass in that regard, but still.. it was too easy..

I have that problem too. When I read something that rubs me the wrong I often engage in too much a written jousting that a lot of the times have me regretting it. When I lose my temper and get angry, after I vent, I feel uneasy.

Because when one lose his or her's temper, you can say or do things that you'll later regret...

If a website finds out your under the age of 13 they can't allow you to be registered. It's against the law to collect info from people under the age of 13 on the internet. I mean the chances of being caught are slim, but its better to follow the rules. You never know what could happen.

Never ever been banned. I might have gotten into trouble at the old Sonic fan site The Sonic Foundation, but never banned.

Shit man, that was the first Sonic site I was apart of.

You been stalking me all this time, bro???

Yes, I'll admit, I have been stalking you. ;)

My username was "EatMyDust" and I recall frequenting their forums quite a bit during 2000/2001. There was a guy named MK who supposedly was a little person and developed a Big fan game (think Sonic 3 with Big) and a mod named Kedzie K. Haha! I just found an old interview with him: http://archive.sonichq.net/newsite/news/interviews/kedziek.php

I got tempbanned once from NeoGaf. Got too overheated in defending Sonic Unleashed. I learned now that "Haters gonna hate" and to just let things slide. I'll still post an argument if they're obviously wrong about something, but I'm not nearly as hot-headed as I once was.

Ah yeah, you are really taking me back. Big Adventure was a pretty cool idea (I remember swinging with the fishing rod) and I think I remember seeing your name around! I was really into that site around the time Sonic Adventure was announced (it was kedziek.thesonicfoundation.simplenet.com or something silly like that), but looking back... I feel kind of old! I am honestly not too sure about the screen names I have had on there, but I did not post much anyways, at least nothing too interesting.

Honestly the first forum I really posted a lot at was SEGA Nerds, the pre-SEGAbits, so I only recently have much of an online personality... Which is honestly a blessing.

HA! Yes! Big Adventure! In fact, I designed Dreamcast cover art for the game. It was the black spine DC art with Big's SA1 drawing pasted over a promo screen of Sonic in Green Forest. I think I still have the file, I'll post it up when I see it. I also recall making a chao fan comic, in which I used forum member's chao and had the comic play out like a sort of Wacky Races story with Hero Chao versus Dark Chao. I did about 3-4 pages before I got tired doing it. I'll post those too if I find them.

I was banned from NeoGAF for joking. I discussed this before, basically they were talking about a developer being sexist, I said I didn't care if he beat his wife as long as he produces good games.

They banned me for it.

Not suprised.. its Nintendo.

But how come you manage to get back in? They must know you're the same guy right? I mean you must be in the position of being unbannable by now with your connections, with a higher up telling the dude to lay off, right?

You are blowing my mind, Barry.  Not only does that really take me back, but I would love a T rated Big game with online multiplayer!

The way I get back in, is simply change my username and use a different IP... The problem is, someone... Aka Fluffy (the guy we had to ban from this forum) likes to stir shit and report me lol. It's all a bit drama but I'd really just like to sign up to report Sega news but there we go.

Now what you say is true, it was obvious that I was joking. A different laid back goofy style sentence after a sex joke (That had nothing to do with the thread) obviously meant I wasn't being serious.

I'm pretty sure Shinobi also got banned by that same person. :x

I got kicked off of Spiffdom.  A Seattle-based Apple IIgs BBS when I was in high school.  For the young'n's, a bulletin Board System was a pre-internet thing like a forum where you dial in, one at a time and post on a host computer. I got kicked off for arguing with the owner, who was (is) a friend of mine.

Why do you register when you know the same shit will go down again.

As I said in the first post when I got banned it turned me away from the band as well, don't they care about their members?

Do the same thoughts not go through your mind?

I've reregistered after a ban (it wasn't a forum ban, it was a comments section ban at TSSZ (aka The Super Shitty Zone)). I was banned because I corrected the writer and told him that he didn't cite his source, I gave him the Sonic Stadium forum link where he basically ripped his findings including an image link. 30 minutes later my post was deleted and I was banned. I created a new account on my work computer and have been able to post there ever since, though I rarely post there anyway.

Mods and admins aren't trained police officers, they're just dudes on a forum with power. Most of the times they're level headed people who ban for good reasons (I always think it's wise for mods and admins to discuss a ban before it's carried out, which is what we do here), but other times you'll find people who ban just because they have the power and are legitimate hotheaded assholes. They don't really discuss it with other mods, and often in larger communities like SEGA's forums there is too much going on to stop and talk about every single ban.

Sharky's ban was that sort of situation. He probably would have watched himself the second time around, but it's not as though he was breaking rules when he returned (aside from creating a new account). I personally would have given him a warning the first time, but not a ban. That's just stupid, and in my opinion SEGA's forum mods in general are inept. When Sharky returned he just posted SEGAbits info in a high traffic SEGA community, which is great for this site. Fluffy loves making trouble and exacting useless revenge. Had he not stepped in to get Sharky re-banned I doubt Sharky would have done anything to constitute a banning (again, aside from creating a new account which I think was unjust to begin with).

My ban from TSSZ, on the other hand, was done because TSSZ is a poorly moderated site and their writers rarely admit that they are wrong. When you do try to correct them, they'll remove your comment and ban you. One strike, no warning. So I'd even go so far as to call them corrupt little shits who think it's okay to post news stories without citations and to post personal attacks on friendly community members. I will never ever forgive TSSZ's owner for the stuff he said about TSS's Shadzter.

I know the feeling. I was a mod a few years ago, on a portuguese message board, I was way too overprotective, I locked a ton of topics every time the discussion started to go haywire in any way, shape or form.

But the thing that burned me was the one time when a user that had been banned got a hold of my contact and he explained me that it was a case of mistaken identity, so I took his case to the admins, he came back, but the major admin of the website was a little ticked off at me because the user didn't go to him directly and instead making his case through me.

I left the mod position a few months later on and I've been consistently refusing a mod position.
