LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO— 23rd August 2011—SEGA® of Europe Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. today announced that Virtua Fighter™ 5, the latest title in its celebrated fighting franchise, will see a grand update and expansion released as a standalone title for both Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft.and PlayStation® Network. The new game, entitled Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, will contain a full overhaul of Virtua Fighter 5’s mechanics, balance and animations, along with new game modes, new dynamic fighting arenas, a massive collection of customisable character items and two all-new characters added to the roster. Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown is expected to be available in Summer 2012.
“Virtua Fighter 5 has always been an authentic arcade fighter, even when played from the comfort of a home console. And, like any proper arcade dynasty, we’ve continued to support, expand and tweak the game in the years since its release,” said Haruki Satomi, Vice President of Digital Business at SEGA of America and SEGA Europe. “With Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, we get to bring the ultimate expression of competitive one-on-one gaming to console players in one perfect package.”
Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown contains the definitive version of VF5, refined over the years since its original arcade debut. The new release also adds an extensive list of features never before seen on consoles. VF5FS will include:
The Perfect Fighting Experience: Virtua Fighter 5’s signature style of hand-to-hand combat, with revised mechanics, balance, timing and more, along with simplified controls for new players while retaining the depth that veterans demand
Dynamic and Interactive Arenas: Fighting areas in new shapes and sizes, including arenas with fences and walls that are different for every round – take unexpected advantage of fighters’ new wall-based moves, or break through the fences with special attacks
A Mode for Every Fight: Dominate the leaderboards with Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown’s extremely responsive one-on-one online battle system, widely praised for having little latency, or take on an army of opponents yourself in a new single-player mode
Customized Combatants: Enter the ring with one of 19 playable characters, including fan favorite Taka-Arashi from Virtua Fighter 3 and an all-new character, Jean Kujo, and customize them with unique costume and character items

2012 will be such a great year
-
Sega's on a roll today. Sonic CD and this announced in 24 Hours?
Kind of suprised at a Digital Release.
-
So between me posting Binary Domain walkthrough, Sonic CD announcement and Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, I think I'm on a roll in regards to good news :: smugface ::
With Binary Domain, Phantasy Star Online 2, Virtua Tennis 4, Aliens: CM, Sonic Generations, all these XBLA/PSN ports and now Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, the King returns, WITH AVENGENCE!
And if the rumoured Playstation Vita games are true too...

Sa-weeeeeeet!
-
Sega improving this much can only mean SEGA console.
Casuals would buy it for Football Manager and Olympics, which is they bought those Licences.
As long as we're being crazy.
-
THIS IS FUCKING AMAZING!!!
I'm not a VF5 pro, but I love the series and own nearly every release for every platform. Cannot WAIT to download this! Shame it isn't on disc, but I'll take whatever SEGA can give!
-
It's really odd that it's a digital only release, but if it cuts back on their distribution costs enough to allow for a console release, all the power to them. Well done SEGA :D.

First Sonic CD, now this? Damn. I love SEGA so much right now.
I never do this stuff, but I plan to get it on both platforms because a lot of really great VF players are on both, even if I am expecting a $15 price point. Although, I guess I am kind of worried that the game will offer minor transactions for stuff like the alternative songs or different costumes.
Auuuuggghhh yeaah folks, heatin' it up!

fucking finally! but i can't believe such a game full of contents is coming to PSN/XBLA though!
-
Freakin' luminous news, man. I think the digital distribution will bring the price down to the point where the fanbase can really expand, too, and all the Street Fighter drones can finally try out the Maserati of fighting games.
Also, nice to see Lau Chan fighting like a nonchalant badass in the trailer again...

FFFFFFFFUU!1!!! Why not retail?! I don't want to buy anything from PSN anymore...
Fabolous news though, Sega is on a roll. They can end the year with a bang by announcing Border Break on consoles... or Vita.

You could buy a points card at a store if you're worried about your credit card info online.

Honestly XBLA/PSN was probably their best bet... It'll be cheap enough to bring in the on the fence types and it'll be more profitable for Sega.

This news pleases me.
-
Also I think we can universally agree what game is Game of the Year 2012, nothing will dislodge Virtua fighter 5 Final Showdown, NOTHING I SAY!
-
Unless it's Shenmue 3, Jet Set Radio, Skies of Arcadia 2 or Phantasy Star Online 2... Wait!
-
I've been kind of thinking how Shenmue 1 and 2 would be a good fit for the 3DS with the 3D effect...am I wrong.

So unspeakably wrong... Never say these words again!
Shenmue is for HD and HD only and it most certainly isnt for handhelds!
-
I'm excited, though I haven't touched the VF series since 2.
Speaking of which, where's my arcade port of VF2? Hopefully demand for this game will add that to SEGA's list.
-
YEEEESSSS!!! I'm very satisfied with this genre of news, it's part of that which I expect from SEGA, in a good way.
Damn! Summer 2012, so far away! However, is already very much get the game :D
-
the time frame is really bad because i think the possibility of VF6 announcement in early 2012 (AOU12) is pretty high
and i know that i won't feel fully satisfied playing VF5 after seeing the "jaw-dropping" that is VF6.

Yeah, is exactly what I was thinking right now.

Ohh i dunno, REIGNS, COLONIAL MARINES and BD are definate contenders. But let's not forget the unannounced but most likely to come SONIC WiiU,the next YAKUZA project and the second game in the BAYONETTA universe.

We already have a SHENMUE for a mobile platform already be it a phone based one. When you think of it the first two titles with the abilities of the current/upcoming handhelds could be a good fit for SHENMUE's type of gameplay.

Unless it's Shenmue 3, Jet Set Radio, Skies of Arcadia 2 or Phantasy Star Online 2... Wait!
Not for one of the above, but Virtua Cop 3, HOTD4+Special, Operation G.H.O.S.T. (ok I haven't played G.H.O.S.T. yet... but a sequel to one of the greatest lighthgun titles) now THOSE are serious contenders. (also a Bare Knuckle sequel either as true to roots Belt Scroll XBLA/PSN title or God Hand and only God Hand (with coop)-style)

Well I've already saved a place for Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown as the game of the generation and nothing will dislodge it I think!
But I think when we get to think about it, potentially next year, their Western calender would have Aliens: CM, Anarchy Reigns, Binary Domain, Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown and Phantasy Star Online 2 (Though not confirmed, but I expect it to be) you have one of the best lineups SEGA has for years. Add to that the unannounced/rumoured stuff (Bayonetta 2, Yakuza PSVita, Creative Assembly's Vita game etc)

yeah but Neo Sega always manages to fuck it up. Thetruth be told Sega has ahd some really great lineups in the last couple of years but they either fuck it up. Usually by the following.
Some of the games aren't as they cracked up to be.(marvel games)
They don't release a certain good game outside japan(insert whatever game here)
A game previously hot title announced gets canned diminishing the line up. (ALIENS RPG)
Or the worse one...
They don't let anyone outside sega fandom or the press that THESE GAMES EXIST!!(Madworld,Alpha protocol etc etc)

The wait will be the worst, it's too long really... . Unless VF 6 is running on super Hardware and I don't think people will mind tbh . Most will just see it as XBLA/PSN title which is just what it is
Shame it isn't on disc
TBH, It would get killed in the shops, more so with Tekken Vs Streetfighter, Soul Calibur V coming out. VF isn't mass market enough for the home, and after the silly mistake of making VO Force disc only its nice to see SEGA just use common sense about but it up on LIVE/PSN and if it comes in at the £10 SEGA will sell more than enough
It's great news, but next Summer is really far too long. I wish it was coming this Winter.
-
Anybody know of a resource that lists/shows all the costume parts in the game? I'm curious to know what Shenmue items there are.

I'm not sure about Shenmue, but I did see a couple of videos and pictures with Ulala and Amigo parts.

You can reproduce a lot of costume from famous characters in VF5, but Shenmue has no official parts as far as I know.
I have one site where you can check every single item from the game, but its all in Japanese.
Check it out:

Oh, looks like the updates stopped... ;_;

Coming from the guy who said it didn't flop on the 360. Peh.
Although you are correct its common sense to release this game via this option, I won't be getting it. I played it to death in the arcades and I don't like the idea of it just being released on digital,I prefer to see it released on a softcopy format. The opening of the case and taking the game out for the first time and looking at the instruction book with the art work present. Digital gaming just can't compare to that.

I could have sworn that Goro's purple shirt was said to be a costume part. Hmmm... Maybe somebody was lying to me.
-
Hmm... I can't remember about this purple shirt. It's nothing hard to be on the game. There is a SEGA TEAM (or something like that) on the Knockout Trial Special mode, and the members of this team does cosplay of some Sega characters. There is one guy (Akira) doing cosplay of Ryo...
Nothing important but I've got back from the arcades right now. Today was the day of the Open Tournament. Only 3 hours of tournament, but I've played just 1 hour. I got the #1 position XDDDD But, I got my ass kicked out so hard... I hate those guys!! Always the same guys playing it EVERY SINGLE DAY!! I play it twice a month -_-;;; There are no more VF players like in the past...
-
Well so much for my physical copy of VF5 on XBOX 360. I wonder if I should just trade it in now and save the money I get from it for the updated version.
