This is basically just a place to put random Sega related thoughts that don't really need a thread but do need to be said.
Like this.
'Dogs of the AMS, time they made a move' is one of those quotes that have stuck with me for YEARS. In fact sometimes I catch myself saying it for no good reason. If anyone ever tried to tell me that 'So bad that it's good' doesn't make sense, this quote would be the prime example of them being wrong.

Good thread. I was remembering Castle and land of Ilusion, for the SEGA Master System. Fantastic games. I love the SMS, i still have the mine.

Me and my friend have a bunch of lines from HotD2 that stuck with us.
"I'm fine, but Harry's..."
"No. Why...."
"Can't be! You're..."
"Yes... I'm...." (Not actually said in the game)
And of course my friend always thought that when the guy says
"G's Bloodstains!"
he was actually saying
"Geez, Bloodstains!"
Also I always say 'Hot dog! Yyyyyes!' like El Blaze when something good happens.
-
Lol. the line that always stuck with me is "I don't wanna die". Love the way he says that
-
Jacky Bryant's "Go ahead, knock youself out!"
I'll say it, when it all comes down to it, Jacky Bryant is the most awesome fighter in a fighting game who doesn't even have a fleshed out backstory or something like that. His quotes alone almost paint the perfect picture in my mind.

Damn you beat me to it I think the quotes in VF2 with him and his sister was probably the best in the series. None of the others have come close since then.
-
This isn't a sega thought exactly but it sums it all up for me...
"They came up with a darn good game."
90s Nintendo of America president Minoru Arakawa reffering to Sega's acheivements with the first Sonic the Hedgehog game.
-
I know it has been rereleased far too much, but the Dreamcast version of Rayman 2 remains to be one of my favorite Dreamcast titles. Even beating out SA1 and SA2. It's just so damn fun and a legitimately solid 3D platformer. Years later I still play it from time to time, and since it has widescreen support and I have a Dreamcast VGA box, I really want to start the game from scratch and replay it.

While looking for Yakuza Battle music, I found this video of Shaggy from Scooby Doo playing Yakuza 2.

That History of Sonic book has been pushed to February due to SEGA of Japan taking longer than expected on their edits.

I actually think Sonic Adventure has some rather funny mouth movements.

Mister Nagoshi and Mister Yamadera talking about BD...Yamadera is the VA for AKiyama and Dan...there some scenes from the game and is funny hear the voice of Akiyama...
He is not in this video, but the VA for Big Bo is the same VA that did the voice of Ryuji Goda...

I remember when I first saw Akiyama's voice actor originally and shocked at how old he looked, I was not expecting that at all.
Neither was I expecting Kiryu's voice actor to more or less look like him, or how Hana has a slim and attractive voice actress. That being said Majima's VA seems just as crazy as him. Must be fun for whoever gets to record these guys and gals acting.

Theres a Sonic the Fighters arcade cabinet on ebay for $500. It's pick up only, located in Wisconsin. I told my dad bout it, who lives 3 hours away from the sellers location, and we joked around about getting it. Nothing will probably come of it, I don't have the $500 at the moment and he'd need to find a way to transport it and store it. But, we haven't stopped talking about it yet. So who knows...
If it doesn't sell in the next few days, my dad *might* go for it, but it's a huge might.
-
Just convinced one of my best friends to get a Dreamcast, under the pretext that it runs NeoGeo games. Go figures.
-
^ LOL It does... right?
Can somebody help me out with this? Earlier today I got to thinking about the early days of PS2 vs. Dreamcast and forgot which had the better textures. Looking at my PS2 games, everything seems softer, blurrier and jaggier whereas Dreamcast games had fewer polys but sharper graphics and better textures. Is that technically correct? Or is my fanboy mind playing tricks on me?

Yeah, there are some emulator bootdiscs that run NeoGeoCD games.. His lifelong dream(cast) is now complete :)
That is a bit on the bullshit side. It took some years for the PS2 to show significantly better polygon numbers. The "60 million" tossed around by Sony was pure marketing bullshit (along with Emotion Engine and "sun effects that make you wear sunglasses" and "superprocessor that is helping medicine fight cancer").
Although the main EE processor was fairly stronger than the Dreamcast, the PS2's graphic processor had little graphic memory. The usefulness of the EE being cut in half.
The PS2 had 4MB V-RAM while the Dreamcast had 8, if I remember correctly.
The Dreamcast's graphic processor could decompress textures on the fly, so it would process a compressed texture (a 5th of the size) and display it decompressed. The PS2 could not do this. It had to process everything. Add the low visual-memory and the higher polygon count, and textures took a blow.
That being said, GT4 looks pretty in HD.
But yeah, most 1st and many 2nd gen PS2 games had nothing on the DC..
(someone correct me if I said something stupid)
-
My PS2 is outputting Component Video, the best possible way to output from the PS2 as far as I know. Meanwhile my Dreamcast is rocking the VGA box which is running through an HDMI converter box. I was playing some DC and PS2 games over the past week and just noticed how much more sharper and detailed the Dreamcast looked compared to the PS2. That's why I was curious.
I get the feeling that a lot of PS2 games have sort of a haze, the jaggies don't help either. However, the DVD-quality video for cutscenes and 2D images look great on the PS2.
-
Do bear in mind that I have always been a rabid Dreamcast supporter anti-PS2 mercenary lol so my facts might be influenced..

I do have that feeling as well. I did not with the Xbox though.
-
Panzer Dragoon Orta and JSRF were/are insanely sharp and detailed with a huge draw distance (this is all from memory, haven't played either game for a year now). Meanwhile, when I think back to playing PS2 titles like FFX, Kingdom Hearts and Maximo, I remember blur, haze and jaggies. Not to say PS2 games looked bad, they just looked... different. I recall being wowed by a lot of PS2 titles, but elements like I mentioned always bugged me. Like they were covering something up with the haze and blur.
-
Yes, I got the same feeling.
I find FFX simply beautiful. It has some of the best graphics (in the full art sense) ever in a game.
Still, it looks blurred out and the colors washed out. I get that sense with every PS2 game.

This recently opened up near me:

Combination bar/retro arcade. I looked over their game's list. They have Golden Axe and a stand-up version of OutRun. Pretty cool! Only 25 cents a game. Might hit it up in a few weeks and snap photos for the site.

I found my old, old SEGA Dreamcast site on a geocities archive. :o I hate my past self.

While SEGAbits wasn't the source of the story, Kotaku was, I'm a bit miffed that SEGA Addicts reported the All-Stars Racing 2 story 2 hours after us AND used the exact same image in their header as the one I used YET they didn't give us a single mention. Clearly they read of the story off our site, probably via Twitter, and then made their post.
If I spotted a story on another SEGA blog, I'd cite the originator as the source and give the SEGA blog a shout out by writing: Source: Kotaku via SEGAbits. Or at the very least, I'd find a different header image so it didn't look like I was going off another blog's story and skipping them when it came to the source.
From now on I'll be adding watermarks.

This is pretty cool: Chikara Ishikura, Director of Mobile & New Media for SEGA of Japan shared our Nagoshi interview on facebook (the ability to view who shared what is pretty handy). He said (using translate): "I'm sometimes think, Japan games producer Mr. Nagoshi and itagaki just good looks? But I'm just the Visual." Not sure what he's saying exactly, lol
-
Sometimes, i like to search for "SEGA" on twitter's search to see what people are talking about, but i think i will stop because i'm tired from all the shit i have to read. Check out this:
I'm a massive Sega fan boy, but what they do to their fans is terrible, even Nintendo resseurects their old licenses.
No they don't, it's "Fuck You" unless you like Sonic. They even shut down fan made homages FFS.
Really, where this dude get this idea? SEGA's twitter answer 80% of the questions, they always answer the fans in foruns and they have a lot of patience with crazy Shenmue fans spamming their twitter.
Other thing:
Great to see @SEGA responding to all its fans about #Shenmue. Well, they haven't yet, but when they do it'll be great.
SEGA always answer the Shenmue fans, even when is spam. Are people that dumb? Is easy to understand: SEGA is not making Shenmue 3 because is a expensive game and will not sell enough. But people wanna see SEGA saying this, so they can start the hate train.
-
I really miss Shenmue. I only got to play through it once....
I even miss the old SEGA commercials; like that Game Gear ad where Ethan Suplee bashes a squiral upside his noggin', or the 32X promo.... "Just stick it in your Genesis!" LOL!

Sonic the Hedgehog - RPG - on the DS - Made by Bioware...... Still a bit hard to believe this actually happened.

This might be the best SEGA releated remix I've ever heard!

Wow... Phantasy Star IV is actually a pretty tough when you think about it.
Also, I noticed how SEGA is just releasing these Genesis Collections on PC. With the latest crop of PC games, they made the MEGA DRIVE ULTIMATE COLLECTION for PS360 redundant.

@Pao: I see your Shinobi remix and raise you a awesome mashup!

Pillowy mounds of mashed po-tay-tos...

So... SEGA publishing a Double Fine game.

Whens hell yeah getting a release date? lol

SEGA's been awfully sketchy with it's digital release schedule... The only game that's a definitive release date right now is Virtua Fighter 5 FS.

In Space Harrier, there are bonus levels in which you jump onto the back of the friendly dragon Euria and fly through the Fantasy Zone landscape, trying to hit as many trees and bushes as possible for bonus points. It's challenging because Euria is a long serpentine dragon who arcs and dips, so you can't quite see what's coming up all the time. You just have to take your best guess and get as much as you can, knowing that, inevitably, you can't get it all.
Sega uses a similar method to decide which games to bring to the West.
-
Watched some episodes from the Sakura Wars TV series and my God it's a bit more violent than I thought it would be, even than the games. One episode was about the Anti-Kouma Group before The Floral Assault Unit existed, and demons where slicing and dicing soldiers in half and the guy with the white hair who's also the villian from the first game begging for the demon's power was obliterated DBZ style.
-
If SEGA is planning on releasing Anarchy Reigns in January at bargain bin price, I can only make a few assumptions...
January was the same month in which the original Bayonetta game was released, so it has this valid symbolism.
The question is: why the low price?
It seems SEGA probably looked at Anarchy Reigns and might have actually put it on the shelf when they were reassessing their IPs and future releases, most likely because they sort'of knew internally that it was going to be a bomb.
I can't piece together step 2 (South Park reference), but it seems like SEGA decided to write off the game, but releasing it as budget price.
-
I think it just isn't a title that fits a $60 or even $50 price point. Transformed is $40, and I'd say that's a perfect price. Perhaps they're planning to release Bayonetta DLC for $5? Bumping the price up?
-
Actually SEGA has been pretty sensible recently with pricing. Viking was exceptionally priced as only £9.99 for a PC port, whilst most of the time I would have expected something around £14.99 to £19.99. Super Monkey Ball Banana Splitz is £14.99 and as Barry mentioned, Transformed is at £24.99.
I really wished publishers smarted up about pricing earlier. Not everything needs to match the price of a AAA title and I think we will see this with how well titles like Viking are doing and how I expect to see something like Transformed being a big seller this Christmas.
-

If there's one thing I've learnt from this generation about DLC, it's if it isn't pre-made before the game is released and doesn't come out within a month or two or release the the game is NEVER getting an update or DLC.
Unless it's cowadoody.
Anyway, I think it probably also has to do with Sega shutting down a lot of their distribution arms around the world (like Sega Australia), and re-evaluating their release schedule around the time AR was meant to release. I'm glad it's coming at a cheap price.
-
Bumping the thread with a stupid thought I had when playing Sonic Rush Adventure:
Marine is the only anthropomorphic animal friend of Sonic's to never be playable in a game. Princess Elise was also not playable, but she's not an animal friend (yeah yeah, human's are animals). Even so, at least Sonic awkwardly carried Elise in some levels, so you could say you were controlling her in a sense.
Chip wasn't playable, though he wasn't technically an animal friend, he was Light Gaia. Just thought it was a funny thought. Even one-offs like Tikal and Chaos came back for SA2: Battle in multiplayer, and you could play as them. But not poor annoying Marine.

me and my homey made a new invention how to play megadrive in virtual reality. imma make a utube video soon and shw u guys
another thing is i played gain ground of the sega master system and accidently did a cheat.
when suddenly i went to internet and that cheat actually exists. what a coincedence

One day I was bored, I was looking through a few Japanese Twitter accounts of Sega people such as Hideki Naganuma or the AMPort Team.
a few of the most interresting I could decipher through Google Translator...
Naganuma said to be a JSR3, it needs to be famous like Sonic, Yakuza or Monkey Ball.
The AMPort Team would love to have Sega Race TV, R-Tuned and Border Break to have a digital port (upcoming games?)
Digital could be huge for them.
They want most of the catalouge out there, but Sega has different priorities right now.
If I were head at Sega I threw a 200 man team over there, have an english community guy, and have an awesome arcade port of a game that we either never played or got a proper port of, monthly. Like a magazine.
-
I'd think the popularity of JSR HD and the fact that every All-Stars/Superstars game features JSR prominently shows that JSR is a popular franchise. Rerelease JSRF to HD consoles, and if the sales are good, create a JSR3.
-
I'm starting to think I'm running out of fun with my Dreamcast.
Can't find any games left that I truly enjoy.
The end of an era I suppose.

Damn, Yakuza 4 is very cutscene heavy during part 1...

Youtube taken down James nintendo nerd's channel. I go to NG, and read: "oh, i am pretty much sure it's fucking SEGA!!".
I go to twitter, people sending messages for SEGA: "assholes, you fucking crusade against S. Force videos killed James's channel!"
And a lot of places around the internet, people already blamming SEGA.
So, one day later, the channel is back, apparently it was a mistake and SEGA has nothing to do with this.
The person who did this: http://i829.photobucket.com/albums/zz212/jaekwon15/avgn_zps7cd77aff.png
I am just imagining Kelly and the others having to deal with the haters every day. And the thing is, EA and other companies are taking down videos way before SEGA, and someone said something like : "oh, SEGA is the one to blame because they started this whole thing and now the other companies are gonna do the same".

RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE!
Most of you might know that I maintain a smaller blog devoted to portable SEGA gaming, The Nomad Junkyard. I started this blog long before writing for any other SEGA site, and truthfully I made it as a way to not only be a part of the SEGA blogging community, but to also hopefully make my way into the writers groups for the SEGA Junkyard blogs.
Since then, Sharky/Ryan asked me to join SEGAbits so I could act as a bridge between SEGAbits and the various Junkyard blogs (as well as SEGA Memories). Due to me being a contributor to a number of blogs, my contributions to the blog that started it all (The Nomad Junkyard) have been few and far between. However, I've recently decided to make it a goal to at least write a monthly article that recaps the handheld SEGA games announced and released each month. I'll also try and write one or two more articles a month that are related to handheld SEGA games or simply being "on-the-go". One of my favorite articles to write for the blog wasn't so much news as it was writing about going on trips and taking a handheld device with me. Just sharing what I played, and what I saw on the trip that was SEGA related.
Anyway, here is my first of the monthly recap posts I mentioned:

I must be a glutten for punishment because I've gone back to Golden Axe: Beast Rider.
I re-bought the game from Amazon a few days ago and I've been replaying it ever since, especially since I want to finish unlocking all those special swords.
Oddly enough, GA: BR seems to hold somewhat decentely in the graphics department. The cutscenes are somewhat tolerable in quality.
I think the HDMI does wonders to it visually, it has a fairly impressive thunder effect.
The thing that hasn't change overall, is the difficulty. Beast Rider is one tough game... If you anyone here has played Dark Souls... I have to ask, is Beast Rider as difficult as Dark Souls? If so what's the main difference?
-
^Just get Dark Souls, it's an amazing game. If you get it on Xbox let me know and we can co-op :)

I've gone back to Golden Axe: Beast Rider.
What is wrong with you?

Guest character: Beat from Jet Set Radio??
As somebody said in the comments:
Is...is this article an April Fool's joke, or are you seriously advocating Beat from Jet SET Radio be in a Playstation game? JSR on the Dreamcast, JSRF on the XBOX...only the multiformat HD version on a Sony console.
</fanboy rage>
-
Barry, have you/would you write a review for the SEGA handhelds that have popped up since, like the RetroGen's and such? I'd love to see the definitive handheld comparison video.
-
I would if I owned any! I'm interested to see what the Retrogen is like, but don't want to spend $60 on it...
From what I know, however, no portable Genesis device matches the Nomad when it comes to sound quality. Also, Nomad has video out and a controller port. Only thing the post-Nomad portables can offer that one-ups the Nomad is screen quality and pre-loaded games.
-
I had one I won at #the_Kartel #SWAG
It's buttons stopped working after 2 weeks
-
I wish SEGA made more franchises on either the 3DS or Vita Handhelds...even if they were very simplistic. :(
-
Agreed. I've already played all the SEGA 3DS games, I need more!
-
Yeah 3DS has had some good stuff so far. But SEGA hasn't made serious projects yet, well apart from rhythm thief which sadly didn't meet financial expectations.
-
There was Shinobi tough
And I think the 7th Dragon might continue there.
I expect a new RPG series for it.
-

I am surprised that they haven't localised ANY 7th Dragon games personally....we have ATLUS who localise EO but SEGA won't localise 7D?
I always thought that making a portable Ristar and Panzer Dragoon would be cool. I am sure focusing on the handhelds with a few riskier old IPs would help them somewhat.
Rhythm Thief is a good start but it's their third rhythm game after Space Channel 5 and Samba de Amigo isn't it?

HA! Fantastic. A local retro shop had a TV tuner for the outrageous price of $70. I told the guy it doesn't even get a TV signal anymore, and nobody will buy it for that price, and I offered him $20. He said no. Few months later the store closed. Wonder why? Maybe it was due to high prices for super niche stuff that nobody but a crazy person like me would buy.

He is the bottom row sitting in the middle. Makes you kind of wonder what the hell happened, but he cool... yeah he cool

Maybe if devs smiled more the games would be better.

Funny how they are all surrounding one woman....lol

Yeah they look like they're really having fun. They should make a new policy that should force them to always smile, maybe thatll help them keep making good games

S0L is asking fans if they would like to see a more Japanese centric cast of Sega characters for future All-Stars games after I posted the Samurai and Dragons Sega All-Stars picture and so far people are replying yes.
Muahahaha everything's going according to plan, give me Sakura Shinguji and Joe Musashi in one game and I will be happy.
-
Huh. I guess we may be seeing more characters in the next ASR. I may have been one of the few people happy with who got in, but I hope SUMO doesn't stay with Europe for roster picks. =P

SOE...... y u not no dat sakera warz ewisted? Anyway hopefully they'll do a focus test in US and hopefully Japan. It'll be cool if they did one during New York Comic Con.
On other news, been ebaying for some Virtua Cop 2 for a cheap price with no luck. Trying to buy a copy under 10 bucks. I may end up buying the Sega Value Pack version again.

Leave it to Kotaku's LUKE PLUNKETT to be such a fuckin' hater:
http://kotaku.com/this-is-the-sega-wed-like-to-remember-492812441
Great art, but what the hell is up with the dig at SEGA?
"Amidst all the rubbish Sonic games and Hatsune Miku, it's easy to forget that Sega was, once, cool. Very cool.
It's something artist Oggy hasn't forgotten, with this tribute to the company's vehicular heyday that I wish my wife would let me paint all over our living room wall."
-
Over the years I've kinda begun to suspect that Kotaku's writers are paid some fraction of a cent for each pageview and comment they get, so they adopt a rather shocking and insulting tone to provoke a response. Plunkett is one of the worst, because he focuses on nostalgic topics and then craps all over them. That's why I was glad when Kamiya tweeted to him, "Do you eat shit?"
-
Shitaku is still relevant? Had no idea.. Ever since that Patricia Hernandez bitch joined in the place turned to (even worse kind of) shit.
-
I want another western VC release from SEGA.
If Nintendo, with their Fire Emblem franchise (good series, but I still think VC is better) can release the games in NA and EU (despite a lower shopment quantity), surely SEGA can release VC games in the same manner?
Plus they have a potential half a million fans worldwide who will buy their game.
As for the Kotaku Article, it reminded me of them shitting on Dragon Crown's Artwork....which annoys me as I like Vanillaware's games from what I've played of Muramasa: The Demon Blade. So fuck them anyway!

Sonic is Goku
Tails is Gohan
Knuckles is Piccolo
Shadow is Vegeta
Dr. Robotnik is Dr. Gero
Why isn't there a Sonic x DBZ game yet?

Not quite Sega, but it is a thought. I've now known some of you for over almost a decade because of Sega forums. Mind blowing, to me.

Sega should buy Atlus

NSFW: google search "cosplay international Ulala" for awful space channel 5 porn. :P It's blurred like crazy, so you don't have to see creepy Japanese man pingus. Not that all Japanese men are creepy. But the guy who - a-hem - Ulala "interviews" has the weirdest alien costume ever.

It's interresting to know what Sega of Japan considers milestones of their company:
1985 - Hang-On
1990 - R360
1991 - Sonic the Hedgehog
1992 - Virtua Racing
1993 - Virtua Fighter
1996 - Sakura Wars
2000 - Phantasy Star Online
2005 - Yakuza
2005 - Trading Card Arcade game, Quest of the 3 kingdoms
2007 - Mario & Sonic
2009 - Border Break
2010 - Kingdom Quest
Overall listing PSO and Yakuza guess means that we will we getting these games forever :P Before any Shenmue or classic Phantasy Star.
And I guess Border Break will be a mainstay in Arcades for a long time too

Huh, found my Genesis AC adapter among the stuff in the basement. I wonder if it's still worth selling since I don't have the console.

Thinking of picking up an original Xbox so I can review Panzer Dragoon Orta and Shenmue II. Is there anything I need to know about the hardware?
-
Probably not, its pretty much the same thing across. Just get the S controller and not the fat one.

Cop out name.

Because everybody dreams, crackdude....everybody dreams. :'(
I thought it was pretty sweet. I'll admit, Dreamcast 2 sounds too "Sony". Would have liked something akin to Dreamcast Redux or Dreamcast Liquid. Otherwise,I thought it looked pretty sweet.

Oh, I knew that one. That fat controller was one of the reasons I didn't like Xbox when it first came out.

Wow. I can't tell if this is one of the high points of "Sega's return to console manufacturing" parody or not.
