So who purchased the new vintage collections form Sega, and what did you think of them?
I love the game select screens, next to the hang on bike is a sign that says Fantasy Zone, those cameos/easter eggs are awesome. The monster world game are interesting as well its my first time playing them.
-
Downloaded both trials. Will unlock Monster World this week and Alex Kidd sometime next month.
I love the presentation! The intro and the menus. Can't wait to check them out more this week.
Makes me wonder if these were being held off for the now sadly forgotten XBOX GAME ROOM. I loved that thing, and they stopped updating it... :(

The Monster world into is great, it has a paper Mario look. It would be nice to see more Sega characters in that style.
-
Got both , At long last Super Hang-on ported perfectly to a console - love the scan lines too . Super Job SEGA, though imo all the home versions of WonderBoy should have featured (more so given they were all on the Wonder Boy Collection on the PS2.
-
Monster World IV is definitely something worth playing. I quite like it. The graphics are incredible for a Genesis/Mega Drive game, and the game plays like it could've easily been a successful Game Boy Advance title.
I tried the other two Wonder Boy games, and though they are interesting, I find them too punishing to enjoy at great length. I'll try them again later, but not until I've completed IV.
-
I havent played it yet but I cant wate to play it because all I have to say is Shinobi!! xD
-
Does the PSN version of Super Hang On have all the same functions as the XBLA one?
It's one of my fav games :)
-
There releasing an arcade version of golden axe
-
@Crackdude: I'd imagine all the features carry over.
The only one I got was Monster World IV. I'm loving it so far though. I'm probably two thirds of the way through the game. Great music, great atmosphere.... I can't believe it took this long to get a worldwide release. SEGA did a fantastic job with the port too.
-
Are these going to make all the Backbone releases obsolete now?
-
@MadeManG74: I'd imagine.
The presentation of the games is really top notch.
-
Have they actually doubled up with any previous ones yet? I think Shinobi is the only one.
Would be cool if they released another disc-based one with just a massive collection too.
I only hope they don't double dip too much, I don't know how I would feel about them releasing a marginally better version of SOR2 and the Sonic Games after I've already bought them for example.
-
Yeah, though I'd totally suck up if they made some sort of Sonic Jam 2
-
On the PSN at least it seems like most of the stuff that's coming out wasn't in the Ultimate Genesis Collection released a couple of years ago.
I wouldn't worry too much about upgrading if you had an older version of something.

Any one buy the Golden Axe Collection?
-
I bought all three...
Actually I'm having trouble with the arcade titles (Hang On, Golden Axe, Monster World) : The start button doesn't work very well. I even switched controllers. It's fine on the Genesis and SMS games, though. Anyone else have this problem? Also, why is Golden Axe arcade now on XBLA twice?
-
I kind of want to get the Alex Kidd one for Revenge of Shinobi, but don't really want the other two games.

Revenge of Shinobi is brilliant, get it bro.
But you must play Monster World IV one way and another, its brilliant, probably the most overlooked classic.
Also I just realised Mark Ruffalo looks like you.

These new versions are done by M2 instead of backbone, and the ports are much better. The emulation is spot on, and there are a bunch of additional features.
I beat Alex Kidd yesterday, and managed to get all of the trophies in Super Hang-On. Now it's on to Wonder Boy in Monster World :D.
-
Monster World IV is amazing! But is the arcade version of golden axe worth it? I am debating about getting it.
-
SoR has online coop, right?

I don't understand why they didn't just make a Shinobi collection, because I would have gotten that without thought compared to three random games thrown together.
And I remembered your love of MWIV, so I was tempted for that too, but you cant even play it in the demo FFFFFFFFFFFF
Also, Mark Ruffalo? Really?

Yeap I agree. Shinobi, Shadow Dancer (Console or arcade) Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi 3 would have made a brilliant collection, too much awesome in one downloadable title.
I would say if you like platformers from that time (Sonic, Ristar etc) you should get Monster World IV, it's one of the best there is plus you would be like supporting non-Backbone ports!
Finally, yes, yes you do. Well you do when I squint my eyes really really hard. Kind of like how when I squint my eyes really really hard Sonic looks like a blue Mario.

I hate everyone who did not purchase at least one of these amazing collections. They are so cheap and have so much amazing content, why do you not have them, guy reading this?
List of favorites to least favorites:
- The Revenge of Shinobi has aged like wine. I am shocked how balanced the game is after all of these years. Every time I play the game it gets better, I used to hate it growing up. I was such a stupid kid.
- Monster World IV is brilliant. I made another post about that in the classic SEGA discussion a few minutes ago. I cannot see how anyone could dislike this game, honestly.
- Golden Axe is just oozing style, substance and detail at every corner. The sprites have aged just as well as Monster World IV, it almost all looks like a painting in motion.
- Super Hang-On is intense. Way too hard for me, but I can get into it well enough. The soundtrack is legendary and the sense of speed is insane!
- Wonder Boy in Monster World is really very cool, but I have always had a hard time getting anywhere. For those who stick to it, I think it is easily comparable to an early 1990s Dark Souls. Just you know, cuter art.
- Golden Axe II has a lot of really cool ideas and feels a lot faster than the first. That said, it is kind of too similar and the AI is nowhere near as good.
- Wonder Boy in Monster Land is hard as Hell, but really rewarding. The secrets are kind of annoying, but I love how truly advanced this game was for the time. There was just nothing at all like it on the market. The newly translated dialog is also great, just like Monster World IV!
- Alex Kidd in Miracle World I always thought was crap, but played this with the savestates (I swear I rarely ever use them!) really helped me appreciate and enjoy a lot about the game. I love how diverse the levels were, I did not expect that at all.
- Golden Axe III is poop. Some nice ideas and some great songs, but generally a pretty awful game. I cannot remember who said it, but I fully agree with the popular line "Golden Axe was like the major summer theatrical blockbuster, Golden Axe II was like the really good miniseries and Golden Axe III was the made-for-TV-movie."
Did not buy the Streets of Rage Collection. I will eventually, but I played most a lot recently... And I really hate SoR3.
I love M2 so much. Really happy the awful ports of Streets of Rage 2 and Golden Axe have been taken off of the XBLA.

I'm right there with Sanus on the Alex Kidd save states.
I would've really disliked that game without them.
I'm still playing Wonder Boy in Monster World. Lots of game here for the price :).
