Title: Project Y; New SEGA Megadrive Cyberpunk Beat'em up
Post by: loempiavreter on August 06, 2012, 05:38:15 am
From the creators of Pier Solar:

Megadrive + Belt Scroll + Cyberpunk + New game  :D

About Project Y
GENRE: Beat 'em all (+RPG)RELEASE DATE:  16/08/2013STATUS: Phase 1...SYSTEM(S): Mega Drive / Genesis, ++DEVELOPER(S): WM

Project Y

It's Project Y - the Beat 'em all you've been waiting for since the 90s! WIP @ 's Magical Game Factory.

The Origins
For the first time ever, fans of retro consoles are getting exactly the game they want! And they want a Beat 'em all!

Investors, as they are called, have used their voting power to shape Project Y to their own liking.

Their first poll result was to make a game for the Mega Drive/Genesis. Then came the decision to make the game a Beat 'em all, with elements of an RPG. The final big turn for the project was the setting, which the investors decided should be cyberpunk.

With these defining poll results, Project Y started to take shape while additional minor polls followed. Development is currently ongoing; you can still join Project Y and shape the game by voting, submitting your ideas and discussing the project on the boards!

40MEG
Obtained with fervor by the investors, we can guarantee the game will have a bare minimum 40 megabits cartridge. Project Y is joining the small club of High Density Cartridges (also known as the "big, black cartridges"). This will be at least the second biggest Mega Drive/Genesis game ever, after WaterMelon's own Pier Solar! With this much storage at our disposal, we can make the ultimate 16-bit beat 'em all!

Also obtained by the investors, the game will feature four playable characters, one of them to be unlocked.

The Context
Project Y takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, set in an Asian high-tech metropolis. The last survivors of the nuclear war are divided into several classes, where the most powerful have the others by the balls. This has divided the governing bodies into several fractions, where ethnic mafias and a corrupt corporation are just a few of them! As you can see, this story is filled with many possible scenarios. It will demand lots of exploring and several playthroughs to get everything out of it.

A CyberPunk Beat em Up you say? Very interesting, I'm keeping my eyes on it.

I still need to beat my Pier Solar copy, but that does sound interesting...but can they pull off a game surpassing Streets of Rage 2?  :o

I doubt it but at least it can try.  :)

Ogod YES! Where do I send all my money?

I love the interactivity they have with "investors" on the site.

Unfortunately, the less money you give, the less influence you provide to the devs. I mean, even if it's based on a hierarchy, it still sucks.

They had a Mega CD disc problem iirc with Pier Solar but they denied that it was their discs that were borked but the Mega CDs! (even if they are old, they are somewhat reliable, and this happened to almost every "official" Mega CD release OST), it somehow worked if you used a copied version for some reason.

First concept art of some characters from the game. Post Apocalypse style? Where's the cyber punk?

I just invested into this game yesterday!

I hope they come to surpass Streets of Rage 2 (although I still love that series).

From what Fonzie's shown...he's managed to get a lot of sprites running at only 40~60% CPU capacity...he reckons he can get double that amount via tweaking their tools!  :o

then again we are donating and we dont see the evolution in this work. while at the same time a translation project is busy doing valkyria chronicles 3 and they do show their accomplishment.
i find it hard to donate project Y. all i have seen so far are some pictures that i also can make on deviantart.

streets of rage yeah indeed it is a stunning trilogy. and i doubt someone can beat the perfection of that except sega themselve and the phenomenon streets of rage remake

as for project Y  all that remains is the name and some pictures of possible enemies characters. other then that there is nothing it can offer. this hype was good but it is silencing down and the interest is running low cause there are no actual updates.

perhaps we will see why . and perhaps they will surprise us. i sont know

First of all, Watermelon has a track record that elevates them far beyond whatever scraps of concept art you can find on DeviantArt.  No offense to the artists there, but Watermelon has proven themselves.

Secondly, they just released this video a couple of weeks ago:

How about teasers for character sprites and more, and the people on here didn't believe in this thing.

Man, these graphics are DAMN impressive for Genesis. They look more like what you'd expect from SNES...

And yeah, these are real: http://www.magicalgamefactory.com/en/boards/projecty-about_8/TeaTime--ProjectY-WIP-Videos_9851/?from=110

These screenshots were leaked, and not official. They line up well with the assets, but not confirmed from WMG yet....

Ok missed that, it was in french. But it's obvious that it's Project Y (asset overlaps with the tease sprites), just no official confirmation yet.

Sprites are huge even larger than most SNES Beat'em ups. It's actually closer to Violent Storm, which to my knowledge has the largest sprites in a beat'em up...

Compared to Final Fight Tough

(http://www.gggames.se/screenshots/a/190/10.jpg)But they promised 10 character sprites on screen on the same time, I only see one for now?

It's obvious, yes, but it does mean we don't have the full story, and we could miss something...

An evolution chart of the main character sprites, apparently the sillhouette of the huge guy is also a main character kept under wraps.

Got to be a bonus character, surely....

The woman reminds me of one of those Mona/Lisa twins from SoR 3.

It is not that people disbelieve, at all. I am sure their programming resources are many.
from his accent, he sounds like he knows many languages......human speaking that is.

So far what i believe, is that they are going to make this release, a CD release. If it was a cartridge release it would be amazing to on the genesis stand alone, because we know for sure they are using the maximum horse power of a genesis game, not including the SEGA CD or 32X.

Not really, Streets of Rage, looks the same more or less, it is the just the artwork, that is being illustrated. Another problem is the final product. So far we can assume, they are running this on settings, using more CPU power then needed. The demonstration showed, us sprites, so how much memory is being used for backgrounds, including the slow-down.

What sucks about the Genesis it has alot of power, but only few games took advantage of it. While the SNES survived on RPG's.
