Title: The "Dude, What Game Should I Buy?" Thread
Post by: MetaKraken_PSN on April 03, 2010, 04:15:36 pm
Decided to make this thread for those who want to suggest of which good game to buy. I'll start this one off:

I'm wanting to buy great games, but I have no idea what. Should I get GTA IV: EoLC or JC2 (both of these games are good, but also expensive).

If you don't have Bayonetta yet, I'd say get that. As for GTAIV vs JC2, I would personally go with JC2, since I didn't find GTAIV all that fun, but thats really one that comes down to personal preference.

^^Cool! Thanks  . I tried out the demo and, since I'm a big car crash fanatic, this game should be great for me.

I need a music playing device. Was thinking of a 120gb Zune. I have about 90gb of music.

I've just learned of Dead or Alive Ultimate for the Xbox and am curious if it is better than the Saturn and Dreamcast versions. I don't own either of those, so would I be better off just getting this Xbox remake? Also, is the online mode still functioning for 360 BC?

That is so strange, just today I saw someone playing that on my friends list and had no idea what it was.

I think that Xbox Live for original Xbox has been cut, or is going to be cut very soon, so I wouldn't buy it for online play at this point. Reading up on this though, it sounds like this has enhanced versions of the Saturn and Dreamcast games, and you get both on one disk. Sounds like the Xbox version is the way to go.

Nice! Shame the the online is probably DOA   but the price is excellent! ebay copies are $2-5

btw MadeMan, I got your message on the 360, totally up for some VF5 soon. Sometimes when I appear online, it's actually my girlfriend watching netflix.   which has basically been the past week.

You should buy darksiders, it's cheap and awesome!

I used to own all of the Dead or Alive series and can tell you that the Xbox release of the second game is the definitive game in the series without a doubt. But, not only is online play going to be cut soon, it was never very good to begin with. Dead or Alive 4 has great online play, but that game had significantly less content than 2 and 3.

The release of the original title on Xbox is the smoothest running, but when it came to the original PlayStation, it had more content. I do not know why they based it off of the Saturn release other than Itagaki being a SEGA fanboy. I would not bother with this one because it is just not very fun at all in my opinion.

The releases of Dead or Alive 2 on Dreamcast and PlayStation 2 is actually a very different game with a lot of different content. If you like the Xbox release, you should pick up one of these. I would recommend at least burning a copy of the Japanese Limited Edition on Dreamcast.

I wouldn't recommend getting DOA 4.

It's not a bad game, but the AI is so hard to beat and there's no easy mode. Also,  the final boss is so cheap.

JC2. You can't say no to an Antionio Banderez protagonist character.

Anyway, if you don't want to pay a ton for a new game, perhaps you should pick up Bayonetta instead.

I'm heading to NYC this weekend and will be on the lookout for games. I have a loooong list of Dreamcast wants, but there are a few I'm unsure of. Specifically fighting games. Would any of these be worth getting? Or am I better off getting the PS2, XBOX or XBLA ports/sequels?

Considering the Dreamcast versions of:

Capcom vs SNK 2
Guilty Gear X
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure
Street Fighter 3: Double Impact
Street Fighter 3: Third Strike
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Vampire Chronicles

Capcom vs SNK 2 - If you get any of these games, this should be it
Guilty Gear X  - Pass, later releases have much more content, and the series is not too good either
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure - You will like it if not just for the characters, try not to pay too much for it
Street Fighter Alpha 3 - Alpha 2 is much more enjoyable IMO, I would get that instead
Vampire Chronicles Only if it is the version that was released through SEGA Direct, otherwise I would pass

The two releases of Street Fighter III are much much harder to get into than the rest of the series or anything you mentioned above. Comparing the releases is like comparing Virtua Fighter 4 and Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution. The latter has way more content, but the original has enough different content to warrant a purchase as well.

Thanks for the advice! Capcom vs SNK 2 was at the top of the list, mostly because I really enjoyed the first. I rented Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure back in the day and don't remember much besides the characters. $20 is my limit for Jojo, same price limit for Capcom vs. SNK2.

I'm also on the lookout for Project Justice, Tech Romancer and Cannon Spike.
Title: Re: The "Dude, What Game Should I Buy?" Thread
Post by: MadeManG74 on April 14, 2010, 06:39:19 pm
Capcom vs SNK 2 is definitely worth getting, it's not perfect, but the bringing together of Capcom and SNK is just too big to pass up.

With Alpha 3, I actually would reccommend getting that on Dreamcast, as it has a really brilliant single player mode called 'World Tour'. Seeing as theres no online play for Dreamcast, you might really appreciate having a fun and content filled single player game for it. I also prefer Alpha 2 to 3 for VS play though, I never liked the multiple -isms of 3.

As for SFIII, I would say go with Third Strike and don't worry about Second Impact. If you must, you should look for SF3: Double Impact, which comes with both SF3: New Generation and Second impact on the same disc.

If you don't have Garou: Mark of the Wolves or King of Fighters '98 (Or KOF '99 Dream Match as it's called on Dreamcast) those are essential buys. In both cases the XBLA ports are probably better though, KOF98 especially since it is the "Ultimate Match" re-release from a few years ago with extra characters and balance changes.

Also, if you are interested in playing these games online you should check out GGPO. Before Sanus' computer went up in smoke we used to play Garou, KOF and SFA2 on it all the time, and even though we are on opposite sides of the planet it was just about lagless. If you are interested send me a PM or post in the Fight club thread and i'll help you set it up!

Garou (Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves) on Dreamcast has slightly more content (mostly just an art gallery) and less annoying menus. I would say it is better than the XBLA release because while that version has online modes it really rarely works at all. I do agree that you really should pick it up, if not just for the survival mode, which is the most fun survival mode I ever used in a fighting game.

The only other game you (Barry) mentioned that is worth getting IMO is Project Justice. While it is not the best Dreamcast fighting game by any margin, it is just such a blast with friends, especially once you start unlocking characters like that swimming guy! If you can though, pick up the Japanese version of it instead. That release had a character creator that was cut from the English release for no reason.

If you do not already have it I would highly recommend you pick up Soul Reaver. I mean, you played Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 and Rayman 2, now play another classic Dreamcast platformer!

Capcom vs SNK 2, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Street Fighter Alpha 2&3, SFIII:Third Strike, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure and Project Justice (which has always been a "must") have been bolded on the list. Thanks guys!

I picked up Soul Reaver last year and loved it. Prior to owning it, I played the shit out of the ODCM demo back in the day. Tony Jay's voice work in that is awesome! He played Shere Khan in Tale Spin and Megabyte in Reboot. You know it when you hear it.

As for 2D Dreamcast fighters I already have: Last Blade 2 (US), King of Fighters Dream Match 1999 (JP)
My 3D Dreamcast fighters: Soul Caliber, VF3tb, Power Stone, Power Stone 2

I just remembered that Barry has an arcade stick for Dreamcast, so he may as well get Garou on DC. For online play he can always use GGPO if he wants.

Also very cool that you have Last Blade 2 on DC as well, I only just discovered that game recently, and it's really amazing.

Best part of buying Last Blade 2 was that it was disc only at a nearby store for $20, I talked them down to $8.99 and then when they rang it up (with a few other games) they accidentally sold it to me for $0. So free Last Blade 2. :D

As for GGPO, I only have a Mac. Am I S.O.L?

Yeah GGPO don't work on Mac. I had a look to see if it would work via Windows mode or something, but even that doesn't work unfortunately.

Looks like we need to stick to XBLA for our Fightin'.

This page needs to return!

Not so much a "should I buy", this is more of a "will the price drop?"

Anybody think the PS3 Slim will have a price drop for Christmas?

I would not bet on it, instead I am certain they will have some kind of bundles. My bet is on Little Big Planet 1 or 2 with a collection of Move stuff for $300.

I am wondering what Microsoft and Nintendo will bundle this holiday though?

Obviously Nintendo will not remove Wii Sports from their pack, because it is obvious they want it to be the best selling game of all time forever. I would say Super Mario Galaxy or New Super Mario Brothers Wii have a chance to be added to them though!

Microsoft will probably have a 'gamer' pack and a 'casual' pack. SARS seems like it has a good chance, and I am pretty certain they will have a Natal bundle too.

Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, Wii Motion Plus, and a black console for $199

Oh yeah, lots of great downloadable titles.

Flower is a must, then there's: PixelJunk Eden, PixelJunk Shooter, Shatter, Super Stardust HD, Noby Noby Boy (odd but fun in short bursts), and echochrome.

Some of the PSP mini's are playable on the PS3 too like Age of Zombies (short but very fun).

Downloadable PSOne games too: Castlevania: SOTN, Grandia, Final Fantasy VIII, Metal Gear Solid, etc...

Spending the cash they are asking for that game and buying a Ken doll and throwing it into traffic is way more enjoyable and accomplishing.

Little Big Planet is awesome. GT5 is good if you like racing.
A game that surprised m and I freaking love is Everybody's Golf!

You should download Wipeout HD as well.

Shoulda scooped up the Slim w/Batman and Infamous.

I expect another bundle later this winter. I would suggest Sony put in God of War III and Heavy Rain for the mature box and LBP GOTY and Mod Nation Racer for the kiddie pack.

There. Done. Sell 500,000 units.

I know you only like blue sky games but would reccomend infamous and uncharted 2 to any gamer.

Little big planet us great but the second will allow even more accurate sega remakes/ updates.

Ratchet and clank a crack in time is almost like a cgi cartoon and very fun. The hoverboot levels are what sonic team should take a note of.

Modnation racers, darksiders, 3d dot game heroes are all well recieved too.

I never got why inFamous is a good game. It's boring, the controls aren't fluid, the "moral choices" are tacky and ridiculous..
Title: Re: The "Dude, What Game Should I Buy?" Thread
Post by: George on May 15, 2010, 11:40:34 am
I have infamous, but I have not played it yet. I want to get through some other games first, then take it for a spin. But I have seen my brother play it and it looks really fun. After playing Crackdown and (right now going through) GTAIV, the open world in the game has waaaaaaaaaay better graphics and effects.

Crackdude is hating it cuz its by Sony and not on iPad.

Uncharted 2, inFamous and even LBP have demos via PSN, so you will be able to judge your self if the games are worth your money. Thouuuuuuuuuuuuugh, if you go on Amazon you can get LBP or Infamous with a controller for 60. That is rather good since controllers are $55 retail.

I'm actually really pumped for 'The Last Guardian'. Once that hits, a PS3 will be very tempting. Also, I'd love for Yakuza 4 to hit the US.

Which brings me to this question: Should I play Yakuza 1&2 in order, or should I play 2 first due to its "betterness"?

Play the games in order. The first game is almost unplayable to me after Yakuza 2.

I would say Uncharted 2 though is the definitive PlayStation 3 action game. Excellent campaign mode with the best multiplayer gameplay I have ever seen for a platformer. An absolute must buy.

As for what everyone else is saying, I really only otherwise agree with Yakuza 3. Most mentioned in here are at least worth a rental (like Uncharted 1, which can be beaten in a few hours - Or just bought for a really cheap price), but I am interested in 3D Game Dot Heroes though, for obvious reasons.

It's worth playing throught the first one for the story alone. Watching the little recaps at the beginning of the sequels gives you the idea of what's happened, but you miss out on all the character moments that make it such a great series.

A new PS2 is on the "buy" list before a PS3. My fuckin' fat PS2 has a faulty video out, so I can't do component video... only basic AV cables which look shit on an HDTV. I won't get all ranty on the PS3, but I'm still pissed that it is not PS2 compatible (i'm not interested in hunting down a fat model that is BC capable).  A BC PS3 slim would kill two birds with one stone, and allow for Yakuza 1-3 on one system. Sigh...

Anyway, thanks to advice everybody! I'll keep it in mind when the PS3 day comes.

^^^I would just wait to get one PlayStation 3 when they re-introduce BC support. They say they will not, but they are obviously just trying to keep the PlayStation 2 alive for now because it still makes money. Either around this Holiday or right after is when I am most certain they will bring it back.

Just get Yakuza 1 and 2 now (especially 2 as it is getting harder and harder to come by), keep them on your shelf for when the time comes. They are worth waiting for, trust me.

Good advice. My buying and completion of Yakuza 1&2 (and Shadow of Colossus) are "to-do's" before getting the PS3.

Another "what game should I buy": Old Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, what should I buy? I got a GBA some months back and got all the good SEGA releases and now want to give the old Game Boy game support a try. Any ideas?

The reason I got a 60gb PS3 via ebay was because Valkyria Chronicles was coming out aaaaand I did not want to deal with PS2's shitty hardware issues. Sorry, nothing pisses me off like high failure rates (Hi 360).

I paid, at the time, $350 shipped. At the time the consoles cost $399.99 for a 80gb. Not too bad, since I would have to spend 100 on a PS2, take that away and its 250 I spent for a bluray player and PS3.

I would recommend Shantae as it is the best game on the platform, but used it is over $100 now, so stick with emulation. There is too much shit on the original Game Boy, but the Game Boy Advance does indeed have a ton of really excellent games. Honestly it is one of my favorite platforms of all time. I could never make a list that would fit this page, so IM me about it some time instead.

That is why I bought it in September and not in October (when I would HAVE had money).

Basically, I bought Yakuza 2 and a NEW PS2. Played Yakuza 2 for 40 mins, came back, it was broken. Disc read issue. I took it back and got 100 for it. Then that is when I decided to stop this PS2 breaking cycle and just drop the cash for a PS3 60gb.

Also people like Sanus where whining that I should have gotten it to start with. Plan at first was to get a 40gb and a PS2. Glad I did not.

I had to sell my amp to afford it.  :x

Alright, here's a tough one:

'Just Cause 2' or 'Red Dead Redemption', which should I buy first?

I plan to have both at some point, but I really would like to have a open world sandbox game for the 360. At the moment, I mostly have a lot of arcade games, platformers and fighters. I considered GTA4, but it's really not my thing. The gameplay itself looks fun, but the setting isn't as enticing as a tropical island or the wild west.

Here are a few notes:

Just Cause 2 Pros:
• vehicles on land, air and sea
• weapons
• island paradise
• base jumping
• grappling + parachute = awesome
• encouraged to blow shit up
• $10-$20 less than RDR

Red Dead Redemption Pros:
• way better story and characters than JC2
• horses
• online multiplayer
• has been given a lot of positive press
• mini-games
• wild west
• good/bad routes

That's a toughie. I haven't played either, and RDR doesn't come out until Friday.

I would say that one would mostly be down to personal preference. I personally would go with RDR since it looks like the western game of my dreams.

I would get Red Dead Redemption first as it will likely fall in price much slower than Just Cause 2 has, and at the same time Just Cause 3 is already in development, apparently.

Good points pardners! I'm leaning towards RDR now. Especially since you noted that online will not be as hot a few months from now. Any 360 bits owners picking this up in the next month? It'd be awesome to have a SEGAbits posse!

JC2 is hella fun though. Nothing tying you down, just pure running about and causing chaos.

I might get RDR, I usually go PS3 for all my purchases but I may go 360 if my brother isn't up for some co-op action.

EDIT: I just texted my old housemate Sam to see if he is getting it for 360 and he replied saying 'Yeehah!', so yeah I'll be getting the 360 version now.
Probably will get rid of BFBC2 on 360 to help me out this month.

/damn trying to save for a car whilst my girlfriend starts her own business.

Cool! Can I be in your posse? We can talk about cooking, music, films, Sega, books by Dave Eggers, golf, tennis, photography and animation as we play.  :afroman:

I'll be getting RDR on 360 this Friday (so I'm trying to finish Fallout 2 before then), but my mic is on the fritz... I can still be part of a posse, but I'll be that creepy silent guy who never talks.

We can call you "The Man With No Voice". Sort of like a Clint Eastwood Zatoichi who is mute instead of blind.

Best pard'ner ever!

Sounds good to me, I haven't followed this very much can you hog tie stuff?

I think you can only hog tie NPC characters who have a bounty on their head and animals. However, I think you can rope anybody and drag them behind a horse. lol

But don't do that in real life.

Hmm... I'll have a look through my XBLA Collection and see what I can reccommend.

The Secret of Monkey Island is a brilliant game and only 800 points. Whether you are a fan of the original or not you really should check it out

Another game just about equally good is Splosion Man. Probably the best platformer I've played this gen. I'm not exaggurating it's really that good.

Those are my top two reccommendations and they are both 800 points, if you don't like those you could also go with The King of Fighters 98 or Mark of the Wolves if you like fighters (beware of shit online for these though), or something like Puzzle Quest if you are either a Puzzle/RPG fan (it's surprisingly good!). I would still put Splosion Man and Monkey Island at the top though!

Braid is 800 points now. Give the demo a go.

Braid is a good option also, I should have mentioned that. I think I liked Splosion man as a better platformer, but that would come down to personal preference.

I have to put a recommendation in for Trails HD! Yeah, it ain't 800 points, but it's worth spending an extra 400 on.

Btw, anybody here have any custom Trials HD levels to share?

Fuck Trails HD, if you are going to spend 1200 points it absolutely HAS to be Shadow Complex. Best game on the service IMHO

But for 800 points, you cannot go wrong with Castlevania SOTN!

Trials HD is sort of like Excitebike with physics gameplay. You drive forwards or backwards and lean back or forth to affect the bike. It's hella fun, lots of time trials and a great editor. Check out Virtua Boy track this dude made:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1989 Classic Arcade on XBLA

Should I buy it?

I wouldn't (although I did), you get unlimited continues and it removes all the fun IMO.

Try out the demo though and see, I just found everything to be too cheap; obviously to get you to pump more quarters into the machine but I think it ruins the fun, when compared to Streets of Rage for example.

When you play multiplayer you get 20 continues each, making the game extremely hard and unforgiving.

I would still say not to get it though, you can basically get the same experience on MAME, save up the points for something neat, you seem to buy something in Game Room like every week, so might as well save some up just incase there is a huge blowout of amazing games.

Funny you should say that, because just moments ago I bought Liberator in Game Room and was close to getting Chopper Command when I spotted TMNT 1989 priced at 240 points. I thought to myself Atari Chopper game or Turtles arcade, and obviously Turtles won.

At the very least since it is a sale item, more people will be buying it and thus multiplayer will be a bit more active over the next week. Also, its looks like a LOT more fun than Turtles in Time: Reshelled. I really wish I could get my points back for that game. Just no fun.

Thanks for the advice though!

Just figured I would point out that massive sale has begun. I got Shadow Complex for 530 Points yesterday, that's more than 50% off!

SOTN and Splosion Man are also on the list of half price games!

Bringing this one back!

A Kmart is a short train ride from my office, Alan Wake is $35. Should I go pick it up? I still have yet to finish RDR and had Just Cause 2 on my "next to play" list.

Alan Wake was a bit of a failure, I would say wait it out. If it is already half price within 2 months of release, imagine how much it will be when all of the DLC is out. Also, IF they even make a Platinum Hits release there is an extremely good chance some or most of the DLC will come included in the box. It is the same reason I am waiting for Mass Effect 2.
