Who is going to be playing it? It is coming May 3rd, so in less than a month!
What are you all most excited for? I personally cannot pinpoint one specific feature as I think everything really sounds outstanding so far.
Here are some new details on the beta that were just revealed yesterday, describing some of the new items and weapons. A lot of reading, but it really really got me much more excited for the game than I was before.

And every other bit of news you could want about this game is on this site: http://www.haloreachbeta.com/ (http://www.haloreachbeta.com/)
I am pretty certain now that this will be my GOTY, sorry Yakuza 3, Red Dead Redemption and Bayonetta! I am not sure what else there is to say, watch the multiplayer trailer if you have not already!

It's sad that Halo's gameplay is only just now starting to come up to snuff with the FPS games of a decade ago.
Too bad then that there's still no keyboard + mouse support, as far as I'm aware... thereby leaving it to still be inferior to PC first person shooters.
-
Sounds like they got some really cool ideas for the game, I'm looking forward to trying it out. I was honestly surprised at some of the really awesome multiplayer game types that they had in Halo 3 that I never knew about (punchout and Grifball for example) so if they support this game the same way (and they likely will) it should be really awesome.
-
If keyboards and mice were supported the game would become uneven. People with controllers would always be in disadvantage.
Also, where were other FPS when Bungie came up with... *drum roll* vehicles?
-
KB/Mouse would not yield disadvantaged. It is all about preference. In the end of the day it matters how well you use your instrument of choice. I know plenty of people that are really good at playing with controllers, put them on a PC and they are terrible.
-

Yes, pad players would be at a disadvantage. It's more of a dramatic control leap than the difference between pad players and arcade stick players in fighting games.
Aiming is far more quick and precise with mice, switching weapons is faster with mouse wheels, jumping is easier than having to reach down for a jump button, and so on. Add keyboard + mice to Xbox FPS games and I guarantee that it will be the preferred control method to give a competitive edge.

What FPS games? I cannot think of any games in the genre that have the same features and options Halo 3 had, even with tons of mods not many games can compare.
As for controls, I highly disagree. I assume you have not played Halo 3, or at least enough of it to see just how optimized it is to be played specifically with the controller.
While you are true with Halo 1 and Halo 2, I have no doubt in my mind Halo 3 would have to be extensively recoded and remodeled around a new design pattern before it would work well with a mouse and keyboard. It can be done, but would it be fun or balanced? I highly doubt it.
Literally millions of people do not seem to have any issues with the controls at all. I cannot be certain with how Reach controls, but if it is anything like Halo 3, I think it will have some of the best controls for a game ever.
-
I still have my friends copy of ODST in my apartment, does that mean i'll be able to get in on the beta?
Halo 3's online is very childish in comparison to most other shooters, when I played it I didn't even feel like I was accomplishing anything (levels, unlocks etc); It will be interesting to see what they have done differently this time.

Welllll to be fair, the unlocks are a relatively new thing of multiplayer. I agree it's fun (I remember particularly liking it in Age of Empires III for example, it seemed really funky and new), but I don't think it's necessary to a good experience.
Having said that, Halo 3 does have levels and ranks that you go through as you play, and you do unlock armour pieces (purely aesthetic) by doing so.

If you'll still have that copy on May 3rd, yes.

Oh hey, I didn't realize that TimmiT was amongst us. :P

Well duh, not many game developers want to make players walk so slow that it's like they're walking underwater.

Lmao, yes, I know how it's been optimized to be easier for people who don't have experience with FPS games on PC (and thus wouldn't know a great FPS game from a mediocre one). Keyboard and mouse players would still pwn those scrubs, though, especially if given the same features.
would it be fun or balanced? I highly doubt it.
Who cares about balance? Keyboard + mouse players should be allowed to dominate.
Literally millions of people do not seem to have any issues with the controls at all.
Literally millions of people do not seem to have any issues with Nickelback's music at all. Does that make Nickelback a good band? No, they are still a shitty band, and using a controller for FPS games is still inferior to using a keyboard and mouse combo.
Millions of people can be wrong! =D

Rarely, but in this case, it is the millions of Halo players who are wrong. ^__^

Actually I just ran some tests, it says that you are wrong. Don't worry though, you don't have to play it.
Seriously though, I don't particularly like Halo either, but I'm not going to say people are 'wrong' for liking it. The wealth of game modes alone give reason to enjoy it.
-
Liking it in the bum is wrong.
Wait, you can't say that because its a persons preference, so you will whine about people that have such views. But you are allowed to do this with Halo?
Double standard much?
-
Fluffy, I have no idea why you are even talking in this topic if you hate the franchise and will never even play the newer games. Why do you care so much?
My point with Halo 3 specifically (which I believe you have not played?), is that they would have to completely redesign the structure of the engine from the ground up for it to work even remotely well with a keyboard and mouse. They would not be able to "Dominate" the way it is set up now, in fact they would be at a massive disadvantage! I also highly doubt it would even be fun, so I see no point.
Literally just the other day you were whining about at least three different fighting franchises being too complex in that you just have to live in your mother's basement to be able to even comprehend most of the game, yet now you are complaining about Halo being too basic and that it needs way more features and options? I want to think you are just giving your constructive criticism, but you are just making this all too obvious.

They mention races as a new game mode. Awesome, finally something I can win at.
-
I'm looking forward to it. Made a few halfhearted attempts to enter some codes to get into the beta early, but I can hold out for a few more days.
There are so many new factors with the various armor abilities and weapon types, it'll be interesting to see if anything emerges as seriously out of whack with the balancing.
I know it's not in the beta, but I'm hoping to hear that there has been some significant expansion of the capabilities of the Forge as well. It's cool as it is, but I've always imagined something as amazing as the level editor in Far Cry, within Halo, would be the joint.
-
Any idea if I'll be able to play this with 48-hour codes? Money isn't an issue right now but I really don't want to buy a subscription (too much to do in real life!)

Shouldn't be an issue, as long as you have Gold in some form they don't care how you got it.
-
Yeah, I guess. I asked mostly because if you are using a trial code you can't play on ranked playlists in Halo 3.
-
I'm guessing everyone is trying to download this at once as I waited an hour and only got to 40%
-
It downloaded in about a half hour for me, but then there were no available playlists for quite a while as their servers were overwhelmed. I was able to get on late last night and play a few games. It takes several matches to get accustomed to all the new abilities, new gametypes and new maps.
I adjusted the controller button layout to be more similar to Halo 3... I found the new default layout kind of confusing.
The available maps really have an emphasized verticality, due to the new jetpacks. They're also fairly large and have some pretty complicated interior spaces which are gonna take some time to get comfortable with and know where you're going.
-
Bar the connection issues (which, once you get into a party you can stay connected to them as long as you want with no connection issues) I had a really good time.
Like Centrale said, the new button layout takes awhile to get used to, but I think it works more for the best. The graphics are excellent, the art is top notch the sound design is seriously some of the best I ever saw for multiplayer in any game ever and everything else is just so close to perfect that I am really surprised that this is just a small fraction of an unfinished game.
The new armor abilities really add a lot more to the game than I thought they would. Outside of the jetpacks - which I think are underpowered, all of them are very well balanced and great fun to use. The Elites should have more choices for them instead of just dodging though. I am thinking climbing would be cool.
My biggest issue with the beta is really that I cannot always pick the kind of mode *I* want to try out. For every round you get four choices of what can come next, and the options are usually game modes and levels you would expect from the last round, and the one before that, and the one before that. I can understand why they did this, but I am just really anxious to try out modes like Invasion and Spartans vs Elites, but cannot be playing the game for hours at a time.
That said, the new modes are seriously fantastic. Even the 'Meh' sounding ones like Stockpile kept me drooling for more!
-
Got a couple of matches in earlier. It's not bad at all, I think I'll need to play more to warm towards it.
The graphics are certainly not excellent, but the are a bit better than halo 3, the guns looks noticably better.
-
When does this end? I can get in with my ODST Disc, but I've been playing Super Street Fighter a whole lot and don't myself playing the beta over that just yet.
-
Some of the game modes, like Invasion and Generator Defense, aren't scheduled to be available until a few days from now.
They haven't said when it'll end... the Halo 3 beta went for about 3 weeks, but some of that time was added on because of troubles at the beginning. The only thing that's certain is there is a message saying the current Arena 'season' goes until May 14.
-
Things I like about Reach.
- The interface. It's pretty sleek.
- The pieces of music make me wish for a lot more. I can't wait for the soundtrack.
- Nearly no loading times.
- It takes a lot less time to find people than in Halo 3. It's almost instant. I hope this doesn't have anything to do with this being beta...
- The DMR. Best thing since the sticky grenade.
- Grenades aren't underpowered anymore. Wooooooo
Things I dislike about Reach.
- Warthogs move at 2 miles per hour. Seriously, they are so slow.
- The guard ability is useless. If they are keeping this they might as well expand the radius of that explosion thing and decrease recovery time (by recovery I mean going back to first person mode).
- There is so much motion blur. They exaggerated a bit. When running, the weapon animation looks like a badly compressed video.
- The assassinations are a stupid gimmick.
I think that's it for now?
-
I don't like how you have no idea how much health an enemy has, I can judge very easily in MW2 and BC2 but it feels like luck if I kill them before they kill me.
The graphics are okay, but they help in making the game feel as dated as the controls, maybe other shooters have advanced too much from this original formula.
-
I like the guard ability now. I still feel the assassinations are stupid.
The stockpile mode is great and I've grown to like the Team SWAT mode, which was something I didn't enjoy much in Halo 3.
I read somewhere that people are complaining the grenades are overpowered. Okay, they might be a bit overkill but they should be more powerful than they were in Halo 3...
-
I haven't really felt that the grenades are overpowered, but the way they "deafen" you makes it easy for you to be finished off if you don't already see where your attacker is coming from, because now you can't locate them by sound either. Which I admit is realistic, but can be a bit frustrating.
The armor lock ability is the one I've played with the most. It works really well if you have a teammate nearby who can defend you/distract the opponent. But at times you are just a sitting duck with the opponent just standing there waiting patiently for you to run out of juice.
I'm experiencing what seems to be a pretty common glitch... I got a message saying I've played enough Arena to be assigned to a division, but it isn't showing me what division I'm in.
-

I disagree with all of this.
You can tell their health is depleted once their shield is down. If you hit them with a melee attack at all in this state, they die instantly. It is a really good and simplified way to tell how far gone you or your enemy is, without having to look away from the player.
As for the graphics, I think it looks nice, but this is probably because I think the art is so great. It also has extremely impressive technical features IMO, like I also never saw such good ragdoll physics in a game, I especially like how enemies can stumble when they are shot.
And on the controls, I do not see how they are bad at all. I would say this is one of the best controls in a game this gen even, and it is not even finished yet! What did you not like about the controls? Besides the new mapping (which you can change) I thought it all worked out extremely well.
The stockpile mode is great and I've grown to like the Team SWAT mode, which was something I didn't enjoy much in Halo 3.
I was especially surprised with these modes as well. With these and obvious stuff like Forge going to be in the final game I am now certain this will be the best Halo game ever, franchises need to peak somewhere after all!
The mode I was really disappointed with though, was Invasion. It might be due to me not liking bigger matches, but I just thought it was pretty boring. It has cool ideas though.
Also, apparently all Bungie games are free to play online over the weekend. The beta ends soon and Generator Defense comes on soon too, so get to playin'!
EDIT: Screw you Orta, the assassinations are awesome! :x :x :x

Funny stuff. I was hoping they included a kill through a glass wall I did .
-
Maybe you find killing people easy because you've played so much but it seems like an annoying dance to me.
basically jump around for 5 minutes pointing at each other and then try for the melee finisher.
Also, the art style is not all that imo, they may be going for a 'clean look' but it just looks generic in my eyes, hell I though Resistance 2 looked better and that game has a lot of issues.
-

No offense, but it does not sound like you are playing the game right at all. Do you use grenades? Did you try to take cover? Do you pick up different weapons or items? Do you try the different armor abilities? Did you try game modes that were not about killing?
As for the art, all opinion based I guessed, but I think it all looks stunning and does an extremely good job of covering up some not-so-high polygon counts in places.
-
I'll concede that there's probably a lot that I am doing wrong that is not helping my enjoyment but the game style just isn't for me.
I enjoyed Halo 3's campaign though.
