I've always liked the franchise ever since the first game. Despite the games only slightly improving, the gameplay has always been solid to me but the franchise has gotten quite alot of criticism on not evolving enough. In my opinion the gameplay stands strong but I would agree that the presentation definitely needed something more.
Well I guess my gripe has been answered. This seems like a major leap from the previous game. Call me excited.

My problem that the Pokemon just look like uninspired crap now. It seems like they rush out designs for a quick buck. It's something that I would doodle up in class.
Shameful.
Also the graphics are pretty bad, for what the 3DS is capable of.

Meh.
They don't even care about the game's name.
It'll get 10/10's because of the visual "improvements" and because it's Nintendo though.

I liked the original Game Boy games, but ever since N64 I've wanted a 3D Pokemon RPG with an overworld similar to 3D Zelda games. They're never going to do that, cause they just iterate the shit out of the franchise, keeping to very rigid and battle-focused gameplay.
This game at least has a changing viewpoint, but it still looks processed from a factory, no organic appeal to the design. Hopefully it'll look better on the 3DS screen, as most games do, cause it's far from being a "breathtaking 3d world." I'm sure it'll turn out fine, I haven't bought a Pokemon game since Diamond so this will probably cure that itch.

i never liked pokemon. well uhm only pokemon pinball with the vibration on gameboy color.
on the normal classic gameboy there was pokemon red version. i tried hard to like it. but after playing 2 hours like a mofo freaking guy that doesnt wanna play it and still plays it i kinda skipped it
why did i skip it? well if you play rpg s back to back like for example gargoyle of the gameboy. or final fantasy mysting quest and evolution on DC and later on skies of arcadia in the future. and when u play pokemon this one on one turn based fight is basically a joke.
but ill be neutral this time
this pokemon might be the good one :)

Lol. They are pretty solid rpg's ya know? Especially the latest 2 (pokemon black white 1&2). The game's strength really comes from its simplicity put into a quality rpg. Exploring the worlds, training your own pokemon and beating trainers and challenging gym leaders gives quite the sense of accomplishment.
I would say the simplicity is really the game's biggest strength and a visual upgrade is what the franchise only needed. But of course I wouldn't mind if they went an extra mile

Problem is nobody gives a flying fuck about these new pokemon.
They should spend all development making a rich 3D high polished experience with the first 251 pokemons. Not come up with 100 more uninspired designs..
The game lacks feel. It has been practically unchanged for a decade now.
It's not that it's a bad game. It's just that lately you have to go through a lot of shit during dozens of hours to get to what you really love (the old pokemons). And that's just boring .
-
Lol yeah I agree with that. I think adding 100 new pokemon with each game started to become a lame tradition earlier on, but it seems they cant help themselves or soemthing like that.
I think it would have been fine if they waited 2/3 games before they added new pokemon(since there are so many allready!!!) but now it is just becoming overkill lol

I know the old 150 by heart, the 251 were cool as well.. More than that it's chaotic! I only know BIDDOFF

Hope these games provide a good use of 3DS features at least.

Wow, this is the first time I have seen members actually CRITICISING what the franchise has become.
And I wholeheartedly agree.
I love Pokemon...probably my favourite Nintendo franchise, but when I argue how it's become one of those "Milking" franchises...I get flak for it (even on fellow SEGA boards), probably because;
A) They are really Nintendo fans who defend such a golden franchise that are too scared to say otherwise.
B) My points may come across as too negative (but I am constructive in my arguments).
C) Pokemon should just never be insulted because it's Pokemon.
Bravo guys for saying it how it is.
I am glad they have moved into 3D...what I am NOT happy about is how they are still making more pokemon, movesets etc that probably don't add to the RPG elements and keep the story as simple as humanely possible....simplicity is great an all...but we are no longer in the Game Boy/Advance period where it was acceptable.
I think after Ruby/Sapphire, it got really annoying with the pre/post evolutions of Magmar, Magnemite, etc....they really had no ideas after that.
The contests were cool in R/S and a fresh change...but why not make a story AROUND that thing if you are into it? It makes pokemon expansive to more then just battling.
At this rate, legendaries will no longer hold that status as there are currently over 30 of them (40 if you include Deoxies transformations in 6 different games).
Come on GAME FREAK, do something more daring. You will still make millions....but oh wait...the fans don't like change (from what I experienced with one particular Nintendo fan).
The SFX of older pokemon are STILL Game Boy samples....they need to fix those.

"The SFX of older pokemon are STILL Game Boy samples....they need to fix those."
Why? That would be absurd. It would be like changing Mario's red hat for blue one, forever. It wouldn't make any sense at all, and it would destroy a bit of Pokemon's legacy. If that would happen, Game Freak and Nintendo would be severely criticised by hardcore fans.
I can't imagine Pikachu or Charizard with other SFXs...

That's like arguing that Sonic's shoes in Sonic Adventure 2 being different makes a significant impact on the game. Or that the franchise has gone sour ever since his eyes turned green.
Fans will complain about any change at all just fucking because, that doesn't mean that change is a bad thing. Using the same SFX for over 10 years is dumb. Even more so when the newer ones have more refined SFX.
It ends up representing the inconsistency of the franchise as a whole beautifuly.

lol, I think changing SFX samples is vastly different to Mario's Iconic hat.
This is the problem with most Nintendo fans, nostalgia means they want very little changed. The SFX samples don't need to change drastically...remastering them would be 100x better then keeping the same sample over 10 years.
If you said changing Pikachu's colour would be drastic, then I would agree, but sound samples? They were awesome in 1999, then they were cool in 2004...but now it's 2013, it sounds so ugly and ear splitting.
Crackdude is spot on, it is inconsistent as a franchise. They remodel the same pokemon sprites each generation but not do the same for SFX samples? We all like nostalgia, but everything needs to improve at some point.
Sonic's redesign like Crackdude said, Mario's redesign, even Legend of Zelda attempts something new in some aspects.
Pokemon unfortunately has gotten pretty complacent in some of it's aspects.
I don't hate Pokemon, I am...or was a HUGE fan of it back in the day...but after Gen IV, I got bored of the same tasks/story.

Well I could agree with you in some points, so at least, they could give us the option to choose between old SFX and remastered SPX. Just deleting the old SFX doesn't sound right for a nostalgic like me, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Now here's a brilliant idea: having an oldschool mode that allowed you to play it as a simpler GBC/A game. Sort of like the concept used in Halo Anniversary.
Now that would be a real treat for a nostalgia junkie. I would personally cream my pants.
I got a DS specifically for Pokemon SS/HG, but it had a very vague feel of nostalgia behind all the modernization.

It would unfortunately require a lot of work to redesign everything into 2D from a primarily 3D Pokemon world.
I am not sure if people would choose the old SFX if you gave it as an option...especially if you could change them at any time...the older ones would just sound awful if you compare them together...unless they make you decide beforehand.
