Book spoilers ahead obviously.
I finished reading the Console Wars book and while I think it might be painting Tom Kalinske with too evangelical a picture, I still have to say that all of Sega failings came from the Japan side and it shows. They gave him the job and barey listened to him even when he managed to topple Nintendo in the West with a 55% share for a short time while SOJ still wasn't doing shit. They knew Tom Kalinske was very successful in the West but they would never listen to him out of stubborn pride. Here's a list of some of their acts of spite/mistakes.
Despite SOA doing everything to make Sonic2'sday a worldwide, simultaneous launch, SOJ put it out in Japan the Saturday before.
SOJ forced project Mars (32X) onto SOA even though there were already too many Sega systems on the market and Saturn was release in less than a year.
Kalinske got into a relationship with Sony and we could have had the SEGA Playstation. But Sega rejected it for their Saturn and it's inferior, hard to work with processor.
Same with Silicon Graphics and what would later be the Nintendo 64 system. Kalinske found it first, offered it to SOJ and they STILL rejected it.
Then there's the whole Saturn debacle. Kainski outright said "NO!" and they just hung up on him. He had no say on the matter despite the fact that it was HIM that gave them so much success in the West. Kalinski was originally going to go with a "Sega Saturnday" on Sept 2nd but SOJ thought an early release would help despite not enough systems for all retailers which ended up pissing off a lot of them and the graphically superior PSX going for $299 in the fall.
I wonder if Sega failings of today are still directly a result of SOJ. I mean we barely have any titles anymore and games like Binary Domain which should have been a hit, failed due to poor marketing and timing (coming out the same week as Mass Effect 3).

Welcome to the club Shigs...i don't hate Sega Japan..but people need to realise they weren't the guys who knew how to make Sega a success...it was the americans really...
You just have to see when SOJ is in charge things kinda go to pot...at least in the west.
I said specifically for years that the 32x was a SOJ idea and not Sega of america..despite what some others would have other people believe.
SOJ not Kalinske fucked up the Saturn launch. I wouldn't call the saturn inferior because it could do things the PSX couldn't but it needed a lot of time to really get a handle of the system and time isn't what a lot of third parties weren't intrested.
As well as the fact that i've been saying for years that SOJ killed off the games that Sega of America had that could had made the Saturn a system to get. All the big popular games that made the Genesis popular in the states were absent with the Saturn..Games that had a following. You add that with no real Sonic game (till the DC) and that system had no chance in succeding in the states.
Unfortunatly because the Saturn was succesful in japan the SOJ thought they knew better because they had several games that was big in japan. Kalinske just was fighting a losing battle.
Sega has always been succesful with a mix of japanese titles and western made ones slapped with a strong marketing campaign. You had that with the Genesis..you even had it with the DC but on a lesser degree..but the difference was that SOJ was running the show with the DC and predictable it went downhill. if SOJ had appointed a maverick like figure who understood the western market as well as the american one, instead of a yes man they put in during the DC period..things would have been vastly different...
-
I always thought that SOJ only really cared (cares) about Japan. They don't give two fucks if the games come out on the West or not or even if their decisions make sense for westerns.
They just go for what sells in Japan and offer zero support to the West.
-

They had no choice because the west was their strongest markets. In the eighties it was europe with the Master system and with the genesis it was the entire west led by America. Sega systems have always done poorly in japan.
Its only when they released the saturn and it had games the japanese public wanted to play did things change. Then they were out to prove that they(SOJ) could make their system a hit worldwide without SOA or Sega europe. And that failed big time.
SOJ were bastards to SOA back in that period...if it wasn't the executives who were leading the charge against their own subsidary screwing things over it was some of the team members as well...Sega should have capitilised with the success of the genesis but they didn't. in reality Sega was probably one of the few who failed to create a succesful followup to a succesful system..and it was all SOJ's fault..
-
Kind of starts making sense when you look at everything from that perspective.
-
Its nothing new..i've been saying it for years..i had massive topic battles on this very subject in here...but most took TA's view on his rose tinted glases look on SOJ. But now the truth is finally out...and no one at SOJ is even trying to deny it or stop the film from being made.
When you have a game like ETERNAL CHAMPIONS 3 stopped, a game which sold 2 million units on the genesis alone...a good seller on the SEGA CD, all because SOJ didn't want any competition for VF 2 on Saturn..then you know things have gone awry stupid and overboard. Something that practically happened with all the other genesis games that was meant to get a Saturn opening like ECCO among others than the message is quite clear. Its SOJ saying to SOA we don't need or want your games anymore. Which was stupid. Even when the creator of EC wanted to include them fo his NET FIGHTER game for HEAT.net, SOJ was playing silly beggers.
Make no mistake that it was no coincidence that those genesis games was returning to DC when SOJ yet again had no choice because of the pounding they got from Sony with the PSX. But of course it was too late...
-
SEGA of Japan is SEGA of Japan. Everything has to be done internally from Japan shores. Anything outside the nation is a no. This is why SEGA and Nintendo, and SONY thrives because of nationalists, who still believes anything outside of Japan are less then human and are monsters. Japanese are for Japanese. Come on down, make sex, eat food, buy our junk? NOW GET OUT, THIS IS JUST BUSINESS.
Basically the same idea about how a Gandhi was greeted by the train conductor, and when he left he was kicked off the train like an animal. The only real way to deal with Japan is ether make them like us, or become like them. Just like Back to the future predicted. YOU FIRED!! YOU FIRED!
Sega of America is not all good. They prevented the Saturn from getting various 2d games or not doing the Segata advertisements??? Also SEGA being Japanese had to side with NEC over any western company. Personally NEC is a great company, and the result was a small western company dying and being reformatted into another company??? I am talking about the NEC power VR.
You shouldn't hate them for that. You shouldn't hate anybody. Hate is a strong negative word.

Time to get the facts straight RegalSin
SOJ forced project Mars (32X) onto SOA even though there were already too many Sega systems on the market and Saturn was release in less than a year.
Wrong . Scot Bayless and Joe Miller (the 2 key people) both confirmed in interviews and on the record. 32X was no forced on SEGA America at all , But SEGA America baby and they're the one who loved the idea and pushed on with it .
Kalinske got into a relationship with Sony and we could have had the SEGA Playstation
Wrong yet again . SONY Japan were locked in to a deal with Nintendo to develop the playstaion . Classic American bullshit sales spin for the king Tom.
Same with Silicon Graphics and what would later be the Nintendo 64 system. Kalinske found it first, offered it to SOJ and they STILL rejected it
And god Job SEGA Japan turned it down . Not only did the Hardware ships years latter than what SCI promised - it was more costly and more difficult to develop for that the Saturn and its display was utter shit too - with washed out burly graphics and rubbish colours and no support for sprites and total number of polygons hardly any more than what the PS could handle . SEGA were right to stay clear, they did screw up with the Lynx chipset tho :(
Kalinski was originally going to go with a "Sega Saturnday" on Sept 2nd but SOJ thought an early release would help despite not enough systems for all retailers which ended up pissing off a lot of them and the graphically superior PSX going for $299 in the fall.
Tom screwed up with the 32X and the rushed out lauch of the Saturn was his response to lame 32X sales and the PS hype getting massive .

You have a very funny way to express Realsin XD.

SOJ vs SOA thread.
IT BEGINS.

TA is here, ROJM is here.
SOJ vs SOA thread.
Hey I'm just dealing with the facts of the 32X . SEGA Japan made quite a few screw ups with the Saturn . No SONIC game ready at the USA launch and no Sonic Game built from the ground up for Saturn hardware until it was too late . Also the lack of 3D transparent effects was a screw up on SOJ part , plus the Saturn should have had double the Sound Ram too
-
Also, wasn't the Saturn planned out as a 2D console, and latter added a second processor so it could do 3D?
-
It was easier to work with one processor alone for any game programming. With 2d gaming it was even easier. Most games used only one and barely used two together. They just added it in at the last minute.
The Saturn ( as with previous names ) was the ultimate goal of making one game system that could run all games. The saturn itself is backwards with all previous SEGA systems. That is why the Saturn has that SEGA sound.
SEGA basically packed in all previous systems into one package.
The level of 2d on a Saturn is basically no different then an PC engine, but with the uneeded power.
So you basically have a revved up arcade board from 1991, on your hands when it comes to 2d.
The Saturn 3d can probably do the minumum the Dreamcast can do, when put into comparison. It has much potential. In fact in comparison the Saturn out does the PSX stand alone, in various areas. The N64 has huge polygons.
-
Also, wasn't the Saturn planned out as a 2D console, and latter added a second processor so it could do 3D
Saturn was always going to be able to handle 3D . Just the way it went about it wasn't to many liking
The level of 2d on a Saturn is basically no different then an PC engine
The Saturn 2D power is leagues ahead of the PC Engine , the PS and ever Jaguar have more 2D might that the PC Eng or PC Fx
It has much potential. In fact in comparison the Saturn out does the PSX stand alone, in various areas. The N64 has huge polygons.
The PS total polygons output is above that of the N64 .
-
The main idea of game creation is to work with as little as possible, and make something huge. You probably do not know the joy the PCE at all, do you? The Saturn is a 3d power horse machine that could even compare to the Dreamcast or PS2. The games that took advantage of it, were mostly the arcade ports. It is like a pie that was already made. Again side by side.
Look at the version of South Park for the PSX vs the N64. Tell me which one is better? That is a decent comparison. Even the Wrestling and Megaman Legends ( yeah that should make you understand. ) Yes the PSX had more polygons, but side by side the games was junkier on the PSX.
The Saturn could have had more games but that was a decision for the devlopers at the time. Tomb Raider was hi-jacked and so was many other PSX games. If more people saw what was coming from Japan, maybe the Saturn would have had an longer lifespan in the west. West was like phuck it, it is too hard, and nobody is buying the system. Where is the CRash Bandicoot??? Heck the Saturn could have had Monster Ranchers, and a Pokemon type game. The N64 life span is 50% pokemon.

No TA SOJ was pushing ther machine...you wouldn't even accept it was an SOJ until me and Jonboy proved you wrong...and now you are trying to push this article. The book says it from sources that was part of the deal from the get go. So you can keep going on that Kalinske screwed things up but it was SOJ and SOJ alone that fucked things up for Sega, nobody else.
-
No TA SOJ was pushing ther machine...you wouldn't even accept it was an SOJ until me and Jonboy proved you wrong.
You have never proved me wrong at all with the 32X or the Saturn . 32X was never forced on SEGA America at all .
The book says it from sources that was part of the deal from the get go
This source is ? . Joe Miller and Scot Bayless were the key technical people at SEGA America at the time and they've told the real truth behind the 32X
So you can keep going on that Kalinske screwed things up but it was SOJ and SOJ alone that fucked things up for Sega, nobody else.
He did because he believed so much in the mass market price of the 32X and didn't focus enough on the Saturn and btw the rushed launched was also Tom's idea .
-
You have never proved me wrong at all with the 32X or the Saturn . 32X was never
forced on SEGA America at all .
You WERE proven wrong numourous times on this topic. I wasn't alone in it and Jonboy was also there but that's old ground. Keep spinning your lies...everyone knows you're a liar now anyway.
This source is ? . Joe Miller and Scot Bayless were the key technical people at
SEGA America at the time and they've told the real truth behind the 32X
As opposed to a book that has it in specific detail now? Don't make me laugh.
He did because he believed so much in the mass market price of the 32X and
didn't focus enough on the Saturn and btw the rushed launched was also Tom's
idea .
Bollocks. If you think Tom K had so much autonomy in a subsidary like SOA than you gotta be on drugs. Anything he had to do had to get approval from SOJ. That's the bottom line. Keep blaming SOA and Tom K in your self deluded world on why the Saturn failed. It was SOJ's fault.
Why?
SOJ was the ones who came up with the concept of the 32x incliuding the working model. Just like all the other models they flooded the market place and confusing the consumer.
SOJ were the ones who blocked any of the big selling Genesis titles getting a Saturn update..meaning anyone who wanted to buy a particular game couldn't and saw no point getting the system.
SOJ were the ones who FAILED to get their biggest identifiable character at that time and any time a game at launch or follow up with a proper sequel.
SOJ were the ones who messed up and appointed an idiot like Stolar who ran Sega further into the ground.
SOJ were the ones who failed to listen to Tom K's suggestions about what was coming into the marketplace and Sega should make alliances with them...
Now who was proven right? Tom or SOJ...here's a hint...Nintendo and Sony are still around making consoles..
-
You WERE proven wrong numourous times on this topic. I wasn't alone in it and Jonboy was also there but that's old ground.
You have never proved me wrong at all with the 32X or Saturn Lets get those facts straight As opposed to a book that has it in specific detail now?
A book mate , love to know it's sources. Lets face it The Technical director of SEGA America Scott Bayless and the senior vice president of technology Joe Milller at SEGA America in the mid 90's would know better than anyone else what really happened .
If you think Tom K had so much autonomy in a subsidary like SOA than you gotta be on drugs.
So Tom couldn't ace on his own . Then all the success of the MD is done to SOJ and nothing to down with Tom. It doesn't work like that .
SOJ was the ones who came up with the concept of the 32x incliuding the working model
No SEGA Japan came up with the idea of a super Mega Drive to counter the 3DO and Jaguar and then a Saturn with out the main Ram and CD drive of the Saturn.
SOJ were the ones who blocked any of the big selling Genesis titles getting a Saturn update
One at that was Eternal Champions which its self was hardly a system seller (not that I agreed with the move to cancel the game )
SOJ were the ones who FAILED to get their biggest identifiable character at that time and any time a game at launch or follow up with a proper sequel.
Yes that was a mistake , Sadly Saturn Sonic turned out to be one of the best selling DC titles and one of the best Sonic games ever made with Sonic Adv
SOJ were the ones who messed up and appointed an idiot like Stolar who ran Sega further into the ground
Stolar did a fine job with the DC launch . Saldy he was left a shit hand but Tom with the Saturn, though his moves to drop the Saturn and piss off WD were massive mistakes granted
SOJ were the ones who failed to listen to Tom K's suggestions about what was coming into the marketplace
Utter rubbish . SONY Japan only had one computer division at the time and they were tied to Nintendo.
Now who was proven right? Tom or SOJ...here's a hint...Nintendo and Sony are still around making consoles
The great Tom still working in the games industry ? And its thanks to Nintendo that SONY entered the market themselves.
-
A book mate , love to know it's sources. Lets face it The Technical director of SEGA America Scott Bayless and the senior vice president of technology Joe Milller at SEGA America in the mid 90's would know better than anyone else what really happened .
Yes they did since I told you originally that he said it originated from japan..which you shot down at the time..but here's a reminder...
So we were looking for a way to leverage the best of what we had done and add that capability to something new, and the 32X evolved out of that. It certainly wasn’t a revolt, and it wasn’t a matter of us or me standing up and saying “no, that’s a bad idea.” I don’t think I ever said that… [Laughs]… I don’t believe I ever said to anyone from SOJ who came over with the original idea that it was bad idea because that wasn’t the kind of relationship we had. I had more respect for all of them than that. But, by the end of CES, we collectively came up with something we thought would work better. They thought it was pretty cool and said “this is great. Why don’t you guys help us run with it? Help us figure out how to pull this off.”
So try again. And he said that before that article you keep reciting. So unless you are spinning no one involved in the 32x project would ever say that they came up with the concept...it all originated from japan...Since the sources of the book is from the PEOPLE who were involved during the time it shoots your little debate in flames..
So Tom couldn't ace on his own . Then all the success of the MD is done to SOJ and nothing to down with Tom. It doesn't work like that .
No TA. SOJ couldn't make any of their systems successful in japan. Michael Katz was the one who initially got the ball rolling and Tom K exploded it into the stratosphere. Before that Sega europe or Virgin mastertronic at the time was flying the sega flag and guaranteeing people brought the MS in droves. There's no coincidence that the management in the west to the management in japan were MORE successful in selling the machine to the public.
No SEGA Japan came up with the idea of a super Mega Drive to counter the 3DO and Jaguar and then a Saturn with out the main Ram and CD drive of the Saturn.
You don't say...Still orginated with Japan that's the point. So its hardly SOA being or acting on their own. And since the directive comes from SOJ its obvious they wanted it made. So you can blame the 32x on japan when they knew they had a follow up system on the way.
One at that was Eternal Champions which its self was hardly a system seller (not that I agreed with the move to cancel the game )
That's why they packed it in the box..it sold enough for them to do that in the first place.
Yes that was a mistake , Sadly Saturn Sonic turned out to be one of the best selling DC titles and one of the best Sonic games ever made with Sonic Adv
He admits it...
Stolar did a fine job with the DC launch . Sadly he was left a shit hand but Tom with the Saturn, though his moves to drop the Saturn and piss off WD were massive mistakes granted
It was down to SOJ blocking games that was the real death knell. No one was going to buy a system like the Saturn to get a bunch of titles they weren't familiar with. Sega didn't ensure that the base they had garned with the MD/Genesis came with them for the Saturn. No familiar titles nothing to get the genral audience to part their cash for the machine. Those game should have defiantly helped in doing that. Then everything else would have fallen into place.
Utter rubbish . SONY Japan only had one computer division at the time and they were tied to Nintendo.
Really....
Sony worked closely with SEGA’s engineers in North America, coming up with some specifications for an optical-based hardware system. And this resulted in a trip to Sony’s headquarters in Tokyo, where PlayStation creator Ken Kutaragi had a proposal for Kalinske. “He said that [the hypothetical system] was great, and as we all lose money on hardware, let's jointly market a single system – the SEGA/Sony hardware system – and whatever loss that we make, we split that loss,” he explained
So try again my good man..
The great Tom still working in the games industry ? And its thanks to Nintendo that SONY entered the market themselves.
He retired but he was still involved in the games industry with Leapfrog which he's still semi active with. Without the great Tom there would certainly be no games industry as we know it today. And Neither is Nakayama or half those high ups who were in charge of Sega at the time actively involved in the games industry.
-
Yes they did since I told you originally that he said it originated from japan
Don't lie mate, it doesn't become you . The idea of the counter for the 3DO and Jaguar came from Japan and the idea of having a Saturn Minus the cart also came from Japan . But the call to press ahead with the 32X came from SOA/SOA they designed the unit and its GPU
SOJ couldn't make any of their systems successful in japan.
They did ok with the Sega Saturn .
Michael Katz was the one who initially got the ball rolling and Tom K exploded it into the stratosphere
Helped no end by Madden and Sonic . The same man also so fit to totally screw up the Saturn and 32X launches .
And since the directive comes from SOJ its obvious they wanted it made
SOA/SOE believed in it so much and they thought they were on to a winner .
That's why they packed it in the box
Get a grip . Lots of games on put on the back of consoles boxes . I mean Myst and Ghen War, Congo were on the back of the box too - Now please don't make out those are Saturn sellers
It was down to SOJ blocking games that was the real death knell
Its up to SEGA America to pick and decide what games they pay SOJ for to come over here .
No familiar titles nothing to get the genral audience to part their cash for the machine
Rubbish. It never hurt the Mega Drive , It never hurt the PS or the XBox . Those systems all had pretty much new IP .
So try again my good man
Too easy . Here's more spin from Tom
Kalinske remembers it as a situation where Sega was basically backed into a corner: " We all knew PlayStation was coming so we wanted to pre-empt them. Japan basically ordered us to be on shelf in the Fall, [so] I thought up the surprise launch as a way of generating excitement and PR. However, the downside was not enough software was ready, which was a significant problem, and the surprise benefited some retailers but annoyed others who were either not included or didn't receive a large enough initial allocation of hardware. On top of that, the price was really too high. If we'd had a larger number of units to launch correctly with all retailers, and if we'd had a few more software titles, I think the result would have been significantly better. On the other hand if we'd waited until PlayStation was in the market I think the results would have been even worse."

I'm not lying. I posted that same quote and all i heard from you is system 16 and other such crap accusations. Then a year later you try to come back with the same guy quoting something you have YET to even show. So no TA i said that guy and that guy alone why?
Because Bayless was more involved with the Sega CD side of things not the 32X. Miller was more or less primarily involved with the 32x. But hey i just have to dig up the original posts(somewhere on the web) where i first talked about it. And where you slammed it...
They did ok with the Sega Saturn .
No they didn't.. ::)
Helped no end by Madden and Sonic . The same man also so fit to totally screw up the Saturn and 32X launches .
What SOJ forcing him to launch the product when no titles were ready..yes its all Tom's fault...Just like it was his fault that SOJ wanted him to do the 32x in the first place which by your admission you backed up..
SOA/SOE believed in it so much and they thought they were on to a winner .
Get a grip . Lots of games on put on the back of consoles boxes . I mean Myst and Ghen War, Congo were on the back of the box too - Now please don't make out those are Saturn sellers
Its up to SEGA America to pick and decide what games they pay SOJ for to come over here .
By then SOJ was running the show, so don't make me laugh.
Rubbish. It never hurt the Mega Drive , It never hurt the PS or the XBox . Those systems all had pretty much new IP .
It does hurt a system in the long run if those games don't APPEAR! You think Nintendo can go out not releasing any of their key titles on their systems? Using the PSX and XBOX which had NO previous ips to begin with to an estabilshed company like Sega at the time is utterly ridiculous....
Too easy . Here's more spin from Tom
Spin?..he's been more consistent than you. But hey let's not believe the guy who led Sega to become a powerhouse in america..i mean why should we? What good has he ever done for the games industry let alone Sega...continue living in your fantasy world where SOJ made the saturn more succesful than the Master system in europe and the genesis in america...
If you can't be bothered to show whatever you are quoting and talking about in its proper size than i'm not going to address it. Its just another silly juvenile tactic from you anyway. Despite it all it won't change the truth that you can't face...
-
I'm not lying. I posted that same quote and all i heard from you is system 16 and other such crap accusations. Then a year later you try to come back with the same guy quoting something you have
You are and unless you can back up what you say . I want you to retract the lies .
No they didn't
No the Saturn only outsold the PS for the 1st 2 years in Japan and for most of its life had a bigger market share than the N64 in Japan .
What SOJ forcing him to launch the product when no titles were read
He was for the 32X and he called that totally wrong and the Saturn well he messed that up too
f you can't be bothered to show whatever you are quoting and talking
It's from the 1up.com special the pleasure and pain Sega speical and where the likes of Tom Kalinske were interviwed and in that in her's what Tom Kalinske had to say
" We all knew PlayStation was coming so we wanted to pre-empt them.]Japan basically ordered us to be on shelf in the Fall, [so] I thought up the surprise launch as a way of generating excitement and PR.However, the downside was not enough software was ready, which was a significant problem, and the surprise benefited some retailers but annoyed others who were either not included or didn't receive a large enough initial allocation of hardware. So yet again you wrong and all over the shop for one's consoles history
-
You are and unless you can back up what you say . I want you to retract the lies .
No TA i'm not the proven liar around here..The people who saw it could attest to it. Its up to you to prove me wrong. Now you come back here spinning yet again about an ARTICLE that you never backed up before hand. I proved at the time i originally wrote it with the same exact quote to now have. So until you can prove otherwise stop acting like you know more than me because you clearly don't...liar...
No the Saturn only outsold the PS for the 1st 2 years in Japan and for most of its life had a bigger market share than the N64 in Japan .
You don't say..considering i never mentioned how long it was in the lead for...
He was for the 32X and he called that totally wrong and the Saturn well he messed that up too
No he wasn't. Considering the book has over 200 interviews from VARIOUS people where at least a third back up what Kalinske is saying..not only are you wrong but once again all over the town...as usual..
It's from the 1up.com special the pleasure and pain Sega speical and where the likes of Tom Kalinske were interviwed and in that in her's what Tom Kalinske had to say
So yet again you wrong and all over the shop for one's consoles history
No you are. Again i believe what i know and now its backed up with a book from a variety of people backing Tom's account of things. Not from a poster who likes to put and quote things out of context..never links to any of his sources and re write history..and keeps sticking to points he has already lost when the facts are presented to him clearly in the face. As i said other people were present at the 32x article and if needed to they will back me up..why because i'm telling the truth...as usual. Unfortunately the truth is something you like to play with..
Now enough of this game..i'm not gonna bother humouring you just because you need to score "cool" points with the likes of Regalsin just because Aki and George whipped you in another topic..on points that i raised originally.
Later..don't waste your life now...
-
The saturn itself is backwards with all previous SEGA systems. That is why the Saturn has that SEGA sound.
The SEGA Saturn was never backwards compatible with the Master System and Genesis/Mega Drive including the add-ons. Unless you want to count ports of classic games.
-
No TA i'm not the proven liar around here
You are and anyone who's had the miss pleasure to deal with you , know it .
You don't say..considering i never mentioned how long it was in the lead for.
Well SEGA held the lead until the lauch of the F7 demo in Japan . But until then SEGA had been out selling the PS in Japan quite easily and with VF 2 was ever out selling the PS at ratio of 8:1 Christmas 1995 and it took until 1998 for the N64 to get some better market share than the Saturn in Japan..
So SEGA did very well with the Saturn in Japan I think you find .
Considering the book has over 200 interviews from VARIOUS people where at least a third back up what Kalinske is saying
You haven't even read the book then lol. And I think you find that SEGA America and Europe were all for and all behind the 32X .
No you are.
Hey I'm just quoting what Tom says and he's quite clear . SOJ wanted him to lauch the Saturn in the Fall , but Tom went for the Summer lauch and totally blew it .
Oh and I'll think you find he's not retired at all . Like with Yu Suzuki, Shenmue III, 32X , The Crucible, Sega Saturn, Price cut, Consoles sales and god knows what else . You are wrong and just don't know ones history of consoles .
Come back to me when you get a better brief,
-
I keep spinning and LYING and spinning and twisting HAHAHA
Not really interested in what you got to say. Stick to your version of history..the rest of us will stick to the actual REALITY.

The SEGA Saturn was never backwards compatible with the Master System and Genesis/Mega Drive including the add-ons. Unless you want to count ports of classic games.
The cartridge slot on the top is equal to the disc. This means you could fit all previous systems over that one slot. If somebody built a converter I am sure it would be no problem running previous system games.
In fact why hasn't anybody ever just did that already. Respect for the previous systems, or just pure laziness? That would have been a great hit with the Saturn, even nowadays.

Tim, you just stick it in your Genesis!

If we have 3d graphics on our phones, wouldn't it be cool if we could
1. First make a AR ( game genie ) type cart that load ups first, and then allows you to select the system
Mark-III
Mega Drive
Sega CD
32X
Run an process that ques the Saturn into running the game itself?
2. Now I know what your thinking. The Saturn is not going to run 32X games because the architectures are different. This is where we have an one-chip 32X installed, or better yet a super hyper one chip 32X installed. This way the system
3. We could even have support for Kalleria via emulators. We could make an emulator that matches up with this setup, and plug it in ethereal jack ( for the extra speed, unless you want lame wireless that will expose you to radiation over time ). Look how small phone modems are, as well as ethereal boards are now.
4. We might even be able to include external drive support. Maybe we could even include flash and dos game support as well.
....
I already know what the product is going to look like. A giant wafer sticking out the back end, that replaces my Saturns memory storage as well. And I can play Kalleria with it as well, with people on computers. Both my Genesis and 32X, games fits in place, including my mark-X games and cards.
The Saturn will be the final frontier.
If not we just use the bottom hatch of the Dreamcast and sup it up to the max. We create a Dreamcast 2 system via the original dreamcast by including everything just mentioned. The Dreamcast was to have an DVD-add-on ( note the HD-DVD add-on of the 360 ), so we could utilize that idea with the above idea.
This time we could even run Saturn games on the Dreamcast with Kalleria support.

One problem
The Saturn is dead.
Second problem
The Dreamcast is dead
Third problem
Sega doesn't have a manufacturer plant to create home consoles anymore..let alone the licenses involved in getting the tech together that made up the Saturn and the DC...
Forth Problem
SegaSammy
Heart of the problem...
The two systems didn't have the tech built for a converter to manipulate previous tech or software to begin with..the MD and previous Master system and its predecessor did. Also the saturn is so far removed from the SG 1000 to the MD..its almost impossible to do so..but that goes without saying.

Their is no heart of the problem.
The Saturn is the final phaze for all SEGA products. It has the ability to run previous SEGA products, including it's own. Again I say the 32X might be a problem but not the SEGA CD so much.
Yes the Dreamcast alone was not built for previous SEGA products, but an add-on could change that all together.
These things can be built and used. Not everybody will own one. Just a few people. With netplay some people will use the official product while others use the emulator. More like an novelty item.

Their is no heart of the problem.
There is a heart of the problem. Shareholders. And Shareholders not wanting companies to waste money.

So far your point is to lie down and give up.
They are dead to Sega. So yes the first point stands.
SEGA is dead. long live SEGA. The game makers we knew loved, and grew up with is no longer there. We do not need to support the new SEGA anymore. We could still have a suped up Saturn or Dreamcast, without them. Many devices are made as well.
Your thinking within the ranks of the consumer base. Not outside them.
There is a heart of the problem. Shareholders. And Shareholders not wanting companies to waste money.
Shareholders? Who cares about them. SEGA could work on this project blind folded if they wanted to. They could outsource. Again SEGA would not be the ones to work on this project. In fact the cover page of this forum; is showing off an IDE Hard drive hooked up to an Saturn right now. Even flash drives can work. SEGA originally was planning to make an add-on ( so was Nintendo ). The same thing done to the N64 could be done with the Saturn or Dreamcast. I am not talking about a whole overhaul of new graphics. I am talking about a few modifications.
If I had the brain power I would do it myself. All I would need is a powerful 3d chipset ( to mimic Saturn and 32X hardware ); a couple of wires, and slots ( for the cassette game systems ). The biggest issue would be the pin-out and their are probably dozen of dedicated fans who are into electronics/programming ( hardware engineering ) that could do this. This device would be the Apex of the Saturn and or Dreamcast. An all in one solution that is small as an fatty hard drive ( for the Saturn ), or could fit under the Dreamcast.
It is not a lot of work. Your just making things seem more difficult. FYI SEGA is not Squaresoft. They encourage people to program on their machines, and make products. It gives them more respect.
Dude, the can't even emulate Saturn software properly what makes you think they're going to remake another Saturn.Geez...
You do not understand. The Saturn emulation is problematic with the chipset. The Proccessors working together. The sound could run off the Dreamcast board. The Dreamcast 2 add-on would have probably have 3-4 chips. Two for the Saturn, one for the 32X ( unless emulated on the Dreamcast ), and one for the SEGA CD capabilities ( unless runnable via the Saturn + Dreamcast chips ). Think of it like an one-chip NES. The chipset must match ( or have the power ) to run the program requests.
Back on the Saturn is a piece of cake. The Saturn holds it's own, with the only one-chip being needed to do 32X calculations, and maybe even SEGA CD ( since the SEGA CD is not too much for the Saturn ). The next problem would be getting the Saturn + the 32X to syncrohnize ( so it can run the few games that takes full advantage of all three hardware ). The Saturn itself could do the job of an Genesis, as well an Mark III.
The thing is that your not looking at the specs, or the actual games. Your thinking who is going to pony up for this project.
In fact let me ask you this question? How much you think this thing would cost somebody?
How much money would you think it would take to invest in this project. Including driving and using the airport to meet with people or house people???
All we need is an hardware/software engineer
A programmer ( which would be the above as well ).
A plan to distribute it.
Your being like Oh it is impossible, it will never work. It can work dude. If the damn Chinese could make Famicom games like a cake factory, why can't we do it to?
No it couldn't.But they won't build them. Accept that and move on...
Again SEGA is dead, long live SEGA. You think Sega really cares what people are doing with their products? You have people making stuff for their products 24/7hrs a day. Look on the front page.
You really seem to live in a world where companies don't want to turn profit.
I live in a world where this a small shred of hope, out their. Maybe somebody will say "hey this is a brilliant idea". Seriously new SEGA is lame. Lets be realistic. Take away every single series they have; that is not recent. What is SEGA left with? An oversized woman who is lady death, and a couple of Alien games. I am not even counting the partnership between SEGA and a gambling merchandise company. Even new Shining Force is some other game with the Shining force title on it. ( kinda like the new Macross ( new Macross Ha )).
-
You're talking about making an all-in-one console, right?
I guarantee that will cost you more than just going to amazon and buying the consoles you want. There's no incentive to do it. What you're talking about would also be a lot more complex than rigging up a hard drive to a console or making a Chinese knockoff of Donkey Kong.
-
Jhonboy a Saturn is an all in one console. I am not going to go into numbers. But it has the power.
What is stopping the Saturn from running SEGA CD games?
What is stopping it from running 32X games?
WHat is stopping it from running a three-way combo 32X+MD+CD game?
Only a few coding practices the Saturn obviously is able to outdo and over do. Your not realizing compressing the 32X+CD+MD into one cassette is doable today, with reasonable cost. Even for a person in their garage.
If the Saturn can run MD games theirfore it has the ability to run everything else connected to the Genesis.
The Dreamcast only problem is the Saturn special chips. Which could be stored inside a board. In fact today we have even more powerful chips that could do the job.
Your instead saying "why do I need to get a real Saturn or Dreamcast?" Why don't I use my lame AUYO game system instead? Or why not focus on the computer emulation"
Maybe out of fun I want an Saturn or Dreamcast all in one. I actually own the consoles and they are setup alongside my other systems. Just as things are meant to be.

Well no, I think what I'm trying to say is that no one would buy this except the sort of people who already likely own all the consoles anyway. I'm not going to purchase a Saturn that someone dicked around with in their garage until it could play MD games. I already own a MegaDrive and a Saturn. This serves no practical purpose.
The Saturn is not, by any means, an all in one games system. At no point in designing the system did Sega consider backward compatibility. By your logic, I could just as easily rig an N64 to run Mega Drive games. All I need is some elbow grease and a pocket full of dreams.
-
So far your point is to lie down and give up.

And this is what's wrong with your whole synopsis. Where do you think Sega gets some of its money from? They need the share holders to keep INVESTING in the company. If Sega starts to do something the shareholders don't like or the investor market their stock goes down and their value goes down with it. That is why Sega can't take risks like they use to.

Second Macross is not owned by Sega anyway, so that point is moot.
And we all know how Sega has changed..its nothing new and its been debated several times over. But we all know sega is capable of pulling a rabbit out of a hat time and again. Most of us have ben fans of sega for years and seen many changes. Some positive others negative. But we all perfer to see sega still around than no sega at all.

It is obvious I am running rings in this conversation. Their are people; many people who would love to see such an add-on built for either the Dreamcast or Saturn.

SEGA does not care at all. If anybody makes products for the previous system, as long as they are
not interfering with the current trend. It is not like that. SEGA is not Squaresoft and is not Sony. Nintendo does not care at all either. The only people who care is Microsoft. As they have shot down anybodys advancement of making games for the original X-box.
Their are tons of unofficial products being made all the time.
You don't think at all...
And this is what's wrong with your whole synopsis. Where do you think Sega gets some of its money from? They need the share holders to keep INVESTING in the company. Again the stupid money market, etc people. Only care about their current products. Not previous products. You need to wake up and smell the reality.
Their is nothing wrong with making an add-on device for a previous console; or even stripping a console down and making a portable model. Stop living in a caged fence and start living on Earth. Your living with doubt. That is all I can say about you.
Is SEGA your master? Does SEGA have a choke chain around your neck. They say buy; you buy? They say play; you play? It is not like that dude, unless you want it to be. Seriously it is sad to hear this from a SEGA fan.
Games is different to fiddling with a system and then trying to sell it. Way different.
Nope just make a board/wires, program a rom chip, latch on a processor, add some slots, and sell it. The N64 has one, why not the Saturn or Dreamcast?
Again they would have to CREATE new tech just to do that and Sega won't do that. They domn't work on consoles anymore. Again who the blazes said anything about Neo-SEGA being involved. SEGA is dead, long live SEGA. This is not apple we are talking about; who wants to view all of your code before selling iphone programs. This is a dead system that is alive to many people.
Just doing it will give SEGA more good advertisement and maybe a real DC2 system will come along.
::) why bother...
Not sega that's for sure...
Money they're not gonna bother spending.
It is just fun to do.
And that's when you'll be sued.
For something that is dead to them already. Ha ha ha ha ha. This is not Microsoft we are talking about. Their are tons of unofficial products being sold for these systems already. Nintendo does not care either.
Because they were pirates and they the companies tried to shut them down but Chinese copyright law and the system itself makes it diffulcult to do that.
Prove it??????? Prove it??? show me the article and lawsuit???? What you do not get many Asian nations have an overstock in leftover parts. So it creates a second market.
Modifying a system for personal use is far different than trying to sell it on a larger basis.
How many people will actually buy these??? I think only a couple thousands. Maybe if enough monies. Millions. It is great promotion for SEGA itself. SEGA is dead; long live SEGA.
No you live in a fantasy world where you won't face the realities of the situation. If you think Segasammy will just let people mod old Sega systems to sell them on a mas scale than you are off you're meds.
Dead systems.
Were talking about a company who has been systematically shuttting down you tube accounts of various sega games. So what makes you think they will simple let you do or anyone else do what they want with their systems?
They do that because their are too many people playing "Shining Force" and the marketing person involved feels that SEGA needs more advertisement. SEGA is just making new enemies and all. That is not SEGA but a marketing person. Just do not get in the way of their CURRENT products
Second Macross is not owned by Sega anyway, so that point is moot.
I am comparing New Macross to the new Shining Force. If you knew the original Macross and compared it to the new one; you would understand. They tried ( and are still doing it ) making a new war and new song. Original Macross even had; people out their inspired by the game itself.
But we all perfer to see sega still around than no sega at all.
Personally I like hudsonsoft better. I am not going into this. You do not know how things work. Your thinking about current trending. Not previous products that are not getting attention. You find those articles. Again SEGA is not Microsoft. Microsoft did that, because they know; they have the PC market and with the OSX PPC not in use. Intel ( who works with Microsoft ) gets more business.
-
Stop the argument guys.
RegalSin: either make sense or don't post. Any more nonsense about the Saturn magically playing all past SEGA games or Streets of Rage having an official movie when it is clearly not official will result in a temporary ban so we can all let the aspirin take effect.

But we unlike you understand how these things work. And they won't work with any of the ideas you have put up so far.

The only fanbot in here is you.

No you grow up. The portable dreamcast is illegal and sega has been shutting them down whenever they can.
SEGA does not care at all. If anybody makes products for the previous system, as

that. SEGA is not Squaresoft and is not Sony. Nintendo does not care at all

They do care. You see there's these little things called patents which sega has on many of their systems. When people start to toy around with their systems that by law is infruing on their patents. And that means you can be sued. Something you should lern little schoolboy...
Their are tons of unofficial products being made all the time.
And ton of lawsuits to follow them...
Again the stupid money market, etc people. Only care about their current

No corportations care about all their products especially if money is involved.
Their is nothing wrong with making an add-on device for a previous console; or

There is because its technically against the law.
Is SEGA your master? Does SEGA have a choke chain around your neck. They say
buy; you buy? They say play; you play? It is not like that dude, unless you want
it to be. Seriously it is sad to hear this from a SEGA fan.
A sega fan that has stock in the company. So believe you me if the company feels they are losing out or want to product their patents and copyrights they will crack down on it.
Games is different to fiddling with a system and then trying to sell it. Way
different.
Nope just make a board/wires, program a rom chip, latch on a
processor, add some slots, and sell it. The N64 has one, why not the Saturn or
Dreamcast?
Not if you are going to sell them that is.
Again who the blazes said anything about Neo-SEGA being involved. SEGA is dead,
long live SEGA. This is not apple we are talking about; who wants to view all of
your code before selling iphone programs. This is a dead system that is alive to
many people.
Because neo sega will get involved that's the point. Again your logic is silly. You will need as mentioned before acces to all the compotents to make this work and reproduce them. There isn't a suprless of sega systems out there to make this even a viable plan
Just doing it will give SEGA more good advertisement and maybe a real DC2 system
will come along.
Keep dreaming..
It is just fun to do.
For something that is dead to them already.
Ha ha ha ha ha. This is not Microsoft we are talking about. Their are tons of
unofficial products being sold for these systems already. Nintendo does not care
either.
Nintendo sued people trying to emulate their games for gods sake. Gimme a break...
Prove it? ??? ??? Prove it???
show me the article and lawsuit? ???
What you do not get many Asian nations have an overstock in leftover parts. So
it creates a second market.
Uusally because Sega and other companies do it in the quiet when they can. Also you have hands google it...
How many people will actually buy these??? I think only a couple thousands.
Maybe if enough monies. Millions. It is great promotion for SEGA itself. SEGA is
dead; long live SEGA.
So what. You are still making money on a system that they own. Most video game companies joined together to stop the second game market because itwas impacting on their revenue. So don't say they don't care or wouldn't do anything just because it doesn't fit into your own little world.
Dead systems.
Whose software sega still keeps making money from...
They do that because their are too many people playing "Shining Force" and
the marketing person involved feels that SEGA needs more advertisement. SEGA is
just making new enemies and all. That is not SEGA but a marketing person. Just
do not get in the way of their CURRENT products
And you don't think they won't do the same over their systems. Only a handful play Shining force. The game only sells between 2000 to 20 000. Yet Sega is going after those fans for putting a video up. What do you think they will do when someone tries to sell a all in one Sega system without their permission? A slap on the back and a thank you?
I am comparing New Macross to the new Shining Force. If you knew the original
Macross and compared it to the new one; you would understand. They tried ( and
are still doing it ) making a new war and new song. Original Macross even had;
people out their inspired by the game itself.
I know the original macross so again i don't need education from you.
Personally I like hudsonsoft better. I am not going into this. You do not know
how things work. Your thinking about current trending. Not previous products
that are not getting attention. You find those articles. Again SEGA is not
Microsoft. Microsoft did that, because they know; they have the PC market and
with the OSX PPC not in use. Intel ( who works with Microsoft ) gets more
business
No you aren't looking in the reality. Companies won't simply stand by and let people infrigue on their products so they can make a buck. Sega licenses old hardware for smaller companies to make for a special toy market. Companies like Majesco has been releasing Megadrives with 40 games included in them. So i very much doubt that Sega will stand by and let people infrige on their systems when they can make money out of it still. But keep missing the point...

Stop the argument guys.
RegalSin: either make sense or don't post. Any more nonsense about the Saturn magically playing all past SEGA games or Streets of Rage having an official movie when it is clearly not official will result in a temporary ban so we can all let the aspirin take effect.
Sorry Barry didn't see this. Consider it stopped on my part.

No worries. :) You weren't exactly in the wrong given you were trying to make sense of everything.
-
thanx.

Barry he was not making any sense to begin with. ROJM just kept shooting down my statements without any proof at all. I am "done" unless ROJM, could make some logical sense or show proof for his anti-Neo-Saturn-era stuff.

Sorry Barry.

After watching that video....you can see why that period was sucessful for both Sega and Nintendo. I knew Kalinski and Niesen believed in Sega and their products but i didn't know that woman was a stauch Nintendo supporter considering what she came out with. Its always good even if its from the other side that the people in those positions really beleived in their company and product...because usually its just a means to an end in companies like Sony and Microsfot now..even Nintendo..
