Title: Virtua Fighter 20th Anniversary Interviews
Post by: MadeManG74 on August 13, 2014, 12:25:48 pm
Some dude on VFDC is translating the interviews Sega conducted for VF's 20th, starting with Yu Suzuki Himself!

“ From cardboard boxes to humans; Virtua Fighter is a story of evolution beyond our wildest imagination.”

http://virtuafighter.com/threads/vf20th-anniversary-site-the-interviews-1-15.19637/ (http://virtuafighter.com/threads/vf20th-anniversary-site-the-interviews-1-15.19637/)

Check it out :afroman:
Virtua Fighter was thought up when they animated the pit crews in Virtua Racing as 'test subjects'!

DID YOU KNOW: That we almost got Virtua Rugby instead of Virtua Fighter!?

Sega West should translate that. Shameful.

The first interview was a fantastic read. I knew about the partnership with Lockheed, but I didn't know VF2 was first to use motion capture tech.

I'm really looking forward to the next translation.

I thought that was common knowledge considering the way the characters moved and all. I always thought it was the first title that used motion tech though.

That's why they are a joke. Sega japan has all this stuff in spades or use to while sega.com is..baloney..

I knew they used motion capture; just didn't think it was the first. Of course, that early in 3D, I guess it should have been obvious. Just not something I ever thought about I guess.

Don't think anyone did at the time really. It was an amazing title that was surpassed by the sequel..only to be let down by the poor saturn iterations. Only the 32x did the console titles any justice, thought the DC was a terrible port even though i played that version to death. Come to think of it don't think there's really been a real bonafide port of the games until the last port on 360...

Would be interesting to see what Yoshiniro Ono have to say on Virtua Fighter. By the way MadeMan, do you have Virtua Fighter 2 and Fighting Vipers on XBLA?

If we're saying what VF games we have (and why not?) here's my collection:

Virtua Fighter -32X
Virtua Fighter Remix - Saturn
Virtua Fighter 2 - Saturn
Virtua Fighter Kids - Saturn
Fighters Megamix - Saturn
Virtua Fighter 3tb - Dreamcast (JP)
Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution - PS2 <- is the original VF4 worth owning?
Virtua Fighter 5 Online - Xbox 360
Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown - XBLA

I also have Fighting Vipers (Saturn) and Fighting Vipers 2 (Dreamcast).

I've been considering also getting the Genesis release and the original Saturn VF, just to have a more complete collection.

I throw mine out there...

VF2 - Saturn
VF2 Remix - Saturn
Fighters MegaMix - Saturn
VF 3tb - Dreamcast (US Version)
VF4 Evolution - PlayStation 2
VF5 Final Showdown - PlayStation 3
VF2 (model 2 collection) - XBLA

Does Fighting Vipers count?  'cause, like Barry, I too have Fighting Vipers for Saturn, XBLA and I own a full dedicated working Arcade cabinet...

I consider Fighting Vipers to be a sister series to Virtua Fighter

I'm a VF nutter too:

VF2 - Saturn
VF2 - PC (Very good port)
VF3tb - Dreamcast
VF4Evo - PS2
VF5 - PS3 + Xbox360
VF5fs - PS3 + Xbox360 (Digital of course)

I might have VF remix kicking around in a box somewhere. If I recall correctly, that one had rearranged tunes. I prefer the original though.

Lets see

VF - Saturn ( original )
VF - Saturn - ( Remix )
VF2 - Saturn
Fighters Megamix - Saturn

I will admit the original VF was great. The Remix kinda derailed and tried to out do the VF2 ( situation ). I can't remember but I might have something with VFKids ( or is that BTogeshden Kids PSX?? ).

VF2 mian asset was that some of the armor and clothing would fall off characters if you hit them correctly. It was hallarious to see this. The graphics are amazing folks.

I will admit the original game was great including "Bronx" ( whatever it was called ).

Die Hard Arcade ( you know that game ).....was up their.

...........

I played the VF3 on a Dreamcast in Toys R'Us. It was sooooo realistic and sooo auwsome. The big thing was the FPS View so you can see what it was like to be in the fighters eyes. Amazing.

I saw the VF5??? ( the one with the Zebras ) in store. It was ugly. I am sorry to say that but the game just flat out sucks. The models are not that different or amazing. Too ugly. Of course this is on an 15" display. I mean ewwhhh even on an 20" the game just look bleh.

That sucks, I wanted to play some games with you. Virtua Fighter 2 is addictive and more fun when you play against other people.
You thought the remix was a step down from the original SS port?
Actually it's a huge step up from the original port with glitches removed like the flickering from the models.

I hope this guy keeps going with the translations. I would like to read Daichi Katagiri's view on Virtua Fighter.

Well, AM2 is still slowly updating their VF20th Celebration. They posted a image of Pai Chan throughout the past 2 decades. Think they'll make an announcement during TGS?
Title: Re: Virtua Fighter 20th Anniversary Interviews

I'm not wholly optimistic. The NU isn't exactly state of the art tech, even by recent arcade standards. I'm not sure they'd debut a new cabinet at TGS.

That being said, I really really hope they announce.

I live in the Georgia area. Virtua Fighter 2 and Fighting Vipers are the only two games I'm currently playing on my 360 now. Waiting until a couple of newer titles to come next year or so.

It is one way . I just love the flat shaded polygon look of VF in the Arcades and on the Saturn

I really don't know why people assumed that VF6 wasn't coming. The series is still a cash cow for Sega. And its the perfect year to release it...

This year? I don't think they'll announce anything this year, unless there's a big surprise soon. I do think it'll still come eventually, as you said, it's still a big hit for Japanese Arcades and I think Final Showdown actually performed quite well. Not to mention they supported Sega Cup again this year, I don't see why they would do that for a game that isn't coming out.

On a related note, I placed fourth last weekend at a tournament in Buffalo, NY :D

Thanks! I'd love to one day go to Japan and just plonk $50 down to play VF all day at an arcade and just see what it's like. I'm sure I'd lose 90% of the matches but it would be an experience to soak up that arcade culture and the competition.

Which characters do you play?

Haha, yes I heard that to find the best players you need to look for clouds of cigarette smoke! I would definitely bring a mask with me or something to cover the fumes.

Wolf is my main, and by far the best character I can use. Still have a lot to learn with him though.

My second best would be Goh followed by Jeffry probably, but I don't focus on them much, just use them for casual play.

For me at this point it depends on which game of VF. On VF2 and 3 i was Jacky. VF 1 mainly Akira.Remix Sarah VF3tb Sarah VF4 Vanessa VF4 evo Goh all the way baby. VF5-Eileen all the way to R and showdown.

Yeah i remember on of my first trips down to japan and i played one of those guys...i realized quickly that the guy was deliberately smoking in my direction in order to distract me. Not that he needed to. Took me another day to beat his ass..and that was lucky because i didn't think i'd see the same guy again.

I always like to play as Lau Chan as he reminds me of Hawng Jang Lee character in Snake In Eagles shadow . Also like to play Kage too . Have to say still to this day VF 1 is my fav in the series too

Reminds you? Isn't he just a straight ripoff of that hong kong caricature villain that showed up in many martial art films of the 70s? Shun Di obviously was the old guy in Drunken Master who also played the same type of character in eagles shadow and other films. Surprised he didn't try to include you know who in a game...

Of course its a rip off  Lau even looks more or less the same as Lee's character in Snake   . Not that I cared playing and seeing Virtua Fighter for the 1st time was just amazing . For the 1st time a game had characters move with the grace and fluidity of that seen in a Jackie Chan movie.

Kung Fu is just a made up term when it comes to movies  . Snake is an actual style of martial arts if one wants to be clever about it and there's quite a lot of Northen  style 'Kung Fu' which is what is always best for movies and what Jackie Chan and his fellow Peking mates were good at anyway

Not the point. The point was that the actors didn't actually do any actual kung fu moves. They were all acrobats that mimicked or made up moves that never even existed. Martial arts is just a term to describe all hand to hand combat techniques. Its never a chinese term. They've always called their martial arts in a general term as Kung fu to describe all their fighting styles.

They did plenty but like with Gameplay Kung-fu is a sort of made up term with not real set meaning (it can be used to mean many things) .Snake is a real style and one that's been used for decades but Like with games , films will always take liberties as real life doesn't make great games or great viewing .

You two just need to sleep together and get it out of your system.
Please don't start arguing like this about Kung Fu movies in a Virtua Fighter thread.

I hope VF6 gets a PC release.

Eileen is cool but I can't ever seem to do much damage with her. I guess I should be more evasive. I want to pull off that move where she climbs up the opponent but never seem to have time to.

Eileen has some very good damage output actually, check out her combo page at www.virtuafighter.com/combos
