Hey Sega fans!
With Sega turning to mobile phone development stronger than ever, it's inevitable that another favourite franchise will soon become a free to play game with in-app purchases.
Which game do you think Sega should turn into a mobile phone Freemium App next? More importantly, how should they monetize it?
Panzer Dragoon
What's it all about?
Once a rail-shooter, this is perfect for turning into a Rythm Game style app. Instead of locking on and firing lazers, think something like 'Rythm of Fighters' that SNK made.
You tap the screen at prompts, better timing kills the enemy faster. It starts off easy, but gets progressively harder as you play. You can upgrade your dragoon and weapons.
How do you monetize it?
You start off with one rider and one basic Dragoon. You can grind away to unlock more, OR you can purchase stronger weapons and Dragoons (essential to beat tougher bosses) and get different riders (including other Sega character Cameos. Who wants to see Ulala riding a Dragoon!?)
Outrun!
What's it all about?
A new Outrun game that we've all been clamouring for! Outrun lends itself great to a randomly generated infinite runner. You collect Hearts in sticking with the game's traditions, the more hearts you get, the better your score! Avoid pitfalls and bombs on the track, as well as traffic.
How do you monetize it?
You can only play a certain amount each day, unless you have enough hearts, which you can purchase for more money. Sega doesn't have the Ferrari License anymore, so while you can't buy Ferrari cars, they could get a partnership with another manufacturer like Toyota and purchase their cars instead. Or just generic models. Certain cars have better advantages. You can also purchase new babes to be in the passenger seat! Ulala anyone?
Skies of Arcadia
What's it all about?
Card battling game! Think of Skies of Arcadia's random battles, but now instead of using moves, you have to use cards. Different cards and characters have different strengths. You start with a 'starter deck' that beats the early enemies but later on you need better cards, which can be won randomly in battles, or Purchased with IRL money.
You progress from fighting mobs of regular enemies up to fighting the games bosses and GIGAS!
How do you monetize it?
Easy! The best cards are very rare, so while you CAN grind away to get them, you're going to want to spend money to get 'premium drops'. You buy a selection of cards that are more likely to contain the good cards! You can also purchase new party members. You start out with Vice, Aika and Fina, but you can buy Gilder, the old dude with the beard, the prince whose name I also can't remember and others! Zivian Bane for example! Even cameos from other Sega games, I want to be an air pirate with Ulala!
Space Channel 5
What's it all about?
Space Channel 5 was a rhythm game well loved on the Dreamcast. For the freemium app, I suggest it becomes a dating sim!
Just kidding, it's a rhythm game. :afroman: Tap anywhere on the screen in time with the music for points!
How do we monetize it?
Exactly the same as SNK did with their recent rhythm game. Give the free game away with a handful of songs, mostly not great ones, but one or two liked ones. Basically give everyone Amy Rose's themes for free along with SA2's main theme and maybe a good VF track. The rest are all paid for!
Plus! You can buy different characters who have better strengths who can make the hard late game levels easier! With cameos from other Sega games! Agent G! The G stands for GROOVY!
Like, Comment, Share. thx

I think for the outrun idea, I forget which game it was, but it was an arcade racer that basically gave you free races as long as you placed in 1st.
Any other place would cost you credits ect...I think it would be more interesting that way.
-
While mademan has clearly turned his snark powers on high (is that why they're kicking you out of Canada?), I could see something like Alex Kidd working in the freemium format - much like Jetpack Joyride but have it be Alex on his various modes of transport collecting coins like in the games. Maybe have daily or weekly rock, paper, scissors matches to obtain power ups and players can opt to pay 99 cents for additional matches.
-
I don't think Sega will put Skies and Panzer on mobile...and I'm grateful.
Monkey Ball, Crazy Taxi, OutRun, Space Channel, Chu Chu Rocket and even Jet Set are a decent fit.
-

If you don't like my ideas, fine, but don't be a dick about it. >=(
(For real, I would probably play a PD shooter game and Space Channel 5 is literally perfect for mobile phone fare).
EDIT: Also everything I said is accurate. Sega IS going to Mobile more and more AND they are using their loved IPs for freemium games. AND I want to be an air pirate with Ulala. *Sigh*
-
Panzer Dragoon actually (sorta kinda) has a mobile game with that Windows Phone exclusive Crimson Dragon game, which I've read is actually a lot of fun.

I..... :'(

These are some pretty good ideas! ;)
I can't really think of anything else besides Jet Set Radio.
-
I would see Sega making JSR an endless runner, randomly generated but you can choose the background to be different 'cities'. You get chased by the cops and need to use spray cans to boost.
Monetize it by only letting you play X amount each day without purchasing more spray cans! JSR is BACK!
Also could allow Beat and Gum as default, but you need to buy more characters, including some cool cameos from other Sega IPs! Imagine Ulala skating around and tagging things in Tokyo-to! Cool!
-
Stand alone Chao Garden. Tamagotchi type thing, raise them, breed them, play mini games and all that. Would make a killing.

How do we monetize it? Charge for food/powerups?
Also I think you and I are the only ones who don't 'get' the Chao Garden love.
-
I'd flip this topic around and say what mobile games from SEGA should become retail releases.
And for that I nominate Chain Chronicle!
-
As long as the game have quality and use a "good" F2P model i am fine with anything.
I asked Hardlight to make a "chao garden" game like Sharky said and they answer me saying "thank for the ideas and the support!". I am not the only one who wants a game like that, many of my friends want one also, so who knows, maybe we will have a nice surprise in the future.
-

Back on the DC and maybe Gamecube there was a black market online option where you could get rare eggs and pre made super chao, I say just do the same thing but ask a few pence for each. Nothing you can't achieve without sinking time and effort into the game. But you can bet your ass people would pay to 'cheat' their way too a super chao.
-
I think everything should be more cosmetic when it comes to chao like certain types of hats related to SEGA characters. Maybe decorations for your chao room? It's pretty easy to monetize it without ruining the base game and making it solely pay to win.

Good thinking with the hats, imagine a Chao Ulala!
Cosmetics would be the best, but I feel like they'd probably end up charging for power ups and Super Chaos anyway.
What Sega IPs could they exploit for a city-building game?
-
I approve of this topic. It's relevant, funny, and tragic.
-

Virtua Fighter, at least then people might play it.

They already made Combo Fever. Sadly you can't download it outside of Japan :/
How would a VF City Builder work anyway? You could make it like Quest Mode that they had in VF5 Vanilla probably. Build arcades and attract STAR PLAYERS.
-
I think Sega should make an Eggmanland Simcity game.
Build Eggmanland the way you envision it...have sonic and his friends be the equivalent of "disasters".
-

If thats what it takes you to play good SEGA games.

I have all the VF games except Kids. So poo on you!

It's kind of amazing what began as a troll topic ended up with people coming with some genuinely good ideas.

T-This is actually a brilliant idea.
BRB stealing it for Brock mobile game.

Hooray! I feel worth something now :D
-
Second that, the Eggman Land idea is awesome

Gawd you got me blushing now...stahp it!

Yes! My exact thought! ;-D

Give me an old school styled Shinning game. I really miss these games and have been bummed that Japan gets all of the new releases.

THE SHINNING SERIES?
To be honest, Japan can keep what's become of the Shining series, 3 was the last good looking one sadly.
Turn Based Strategy would work great on phones though, I wish they'd even re-release the old games with touch screen controls.
-
Obviously this is a joke thread, but I think the kind of pick up and play gameplay that works on phones is a really good space for bringing back some of SEGAs classics that probably wouldn't sell anywhere else.
I think Fantasy Zone would be a great example, and you wouldn't have to even change much of the game at all as it lends itself perfectly to the whole free2play thing. I would be so down for a new 2D, side scrolling cute-em-up Fantasy Zone which plays exactly like the classics. Give it a good number of levels and bosses, perhaps a light story like the old games had, something to show progression. Just as in the past use the in game money which enemies drop to buy new weapons and add-ons from the shop only this time have the OPTION to use actual money too.

^Shmups on touch-screen are about as much fun as banging your head against a wall, I would not recommend it.
I got the Raiden collection for Android through a humble bundle and it's nightmarishly bad to play.
As I said, I legitimately think Space Channel 5 or any other rhythm game would work on phones. I would rather it be paid for rather than micro transactions out the ass though (which is what would be more likely to happen sadly).

Sonic Shuffle Online!

touch screen is the biggest draw back to all of mobile gaming for me. But if they could work their way around it some how I still think Fantasy Zone is the perfect game for the free2play model.

Crazy Taxi made touch screen work.
You just have to develop the gameplay around it. Not just port some game and slap it in there
-
Speaking of Crazy Taxi: City Rush...I just saw the public perception of that game's social media channels are kinda negative...most comments are like...make a real game! Shenmue 3!
-
People are retarded.
-
Sega should make Shenmue III an infinite runner, that would use touch-screen controls really well. Make the game around that.
You can play for free to get Ryo out of the cave, randomly generated level where rocks fall from the sky and you pick up Phoenix Mirrors to gain strength. If you want the following chapters, you need to pay per chapter or collect Mirrors in exponentially increasing amounts to unlock later levels (it starts off easy, but becomes next to impossible without paying to finish the story).
You could also sell some nice premium content like buying Ren and Joy to run through levels too. Maybe even cameos from other Sega games? Ulala defeating Lan Di would be a dream come true for many Sega fans.

I'll concede I'm running my ideas into the ground, but people seem to like the idea of JSR endless runners and Crazy Taxi City Rush.
-
JSR shouldn't be an endless runner. You could press the bottom left corner to initiate motion, and swipe movements with the right hand to control direction and action. Graffiti should be touched based.
-
Touch based graffiti would be baller. No idea how to get the platforming to work on touch controls though.
-
JSR for iOS and Android played quite well, so I could see a new game made for the mobile platform working well.
As far as shmups on touch screen devices, I have played a few made specifically for iPad and they play amazingly well. You just put your finger at the bottom of the screen and the ship hovers a few inches in front. Holding down fires (because when are you NOT shooting in a shmup?) and moving around your finger has the ship match that 1:1.
I'd also point to the 3D Classics Space Harrier, the stylus controls were similar to this and were amazing. Have the bottom half act as te track pad and the top half act as the screen.

Raiden has controls like that too, and it's still terrible because of one issue you cannot avoid: Your finger is covering part of the screen constantly. Sure the ship is 'In front' of your finger, but you need to be able to move up and down as well as left and right. It's terrible unless the game is dumbed down to the point where there is zero challenge anyway.
I've tried playing Raiden a bunch of times with various control methods on phone, because it seems like it would be the perfect quick bus ride game, but it's frustratingly unplayable each time and I end up not touching it. Lucky I got it in a humble bundle. I'm not convinced Shmups can work with touch controls sadly, because it would be great if they did.
Dividing the screen into the track pad and game might work better since you're not covering the screen with your finger constantly, but then you lose half the screen...
As for JSR working on iOS, I'd be interested in seeing that, because even a game with plodding pace like KotOR handles sketchy with touch screen running about, and that's just exploring the hub world. I can't imagine JSR being anything less than headache inducing with touch controls.
I just had a look at a demo and it uses a 'virtual analogue stick'. I personally find those abhorrent, having played a lot of emulated games on my phone with virtua controls they are usually borderline unplayable. Again a big part of this is that your finger covers a big part of the screen, unless you're playing on a tablet, in which case WHY? Just play the DC/360/PC any number of good versions with real controls!?
Has anyone played a lightgun style game on touchscreen? That seems like it might work, but literally touching the screen would kill any challenge for the game, or most of it at least I would think. Otherwise HotD might work. Maybe you could alter it up so it's more about hitting specific points or just more enemies on screen? I know that SNK made a lightgun style shooter recently, but it looks atrocious. If nothing else Sega could do a lazy port of HotD 2 and 3 again or something.
As far as monetization goes, Sega could make you pay for bullets per day (or health or something. Similar to paying at the arcade) as well as some sweet extra playable characters. Ulala would be my pick (she already has a lazer gun after all).
-
Lightgun on a touchscreen works when you bump up the on screen enemies. Turn it into a semi-rhythm game
-

Well, I can't exactly bring a DC/360/PC on the go, which is what give JSR iOS an advantage.

Yes, but I would rather read a book, read a comic on my phone or listen to music than play something with horrible controls. Mobile phone games seem like a novelty but most of the time I drop them due to bad controls or just scummy design. :/

1) Bring back Feel The Magic.
2) Do Daytona USA & SEGA Rally like the Real Racing series (tilt controls, auto accelerate, press screen to brake).
3) Convert Skies of Arcadia into an SRPG clone of Fire Emblem... or just use Sakura Wars or Valkyria Chronicles.
4) Create a digital-TCG version of Golden Axe in the vein of Magic/Pokemon/Hearthstone.

Console to Handheld to Freemium App...
Seems like the next natural step for Valkyria Chronicles to be quite honest.
I do think that VC would be the most likely to get some kind of Mobile gameout of those, and the one that would work best on phone. Change it to a top down view and have touch screen to move units, remove manual aim.
It would then be more reliant on stats and things like positioning which would be interesting. I'm thinking something like the excellent X-Com games or Silent Storm (with less real time aspects than Silent Storm because touch controls would make that a nightmare).
It could work quite well supposing Sega don't go nuts with making it a skinner box or something. Just give me that DLC, we have Vice, Fina and Aika in the game, now we need another Cameo. I'm thinking a certain Space gal named Ulala would work as a scout, personally.

Sega really should get on doing the Typing of the Dead on the phone (AND NOT OVERKILL DAMMIT). They already have Flick of the Dead for the japanese, which is made with japanese characters in mind.

Texting of the Dead!?
That shit could work dammit.

We have seen some of that influence in their mobile games. Go Dance has some of the same artistic techniques, and Rhythm Thief has the mini games.
You don't need to do Feel the Magic, but rather an experimental game in that vein. They really should tackle that next for mobile.

Someone call Sega! This is too good.
