It was actually announced back in January 2013, but it seems like they only started development back then cause they just revealed the first new trailer since it was revealed back then. Apparently SMT fans are kinda disappointed though, as it looks more light hearted than games in the series usually do and almost more like a Persona game. (though even more anime)
Also this is being made by Atlus.
-
Kinda seems like Atlus has 2 "HD" games under development currently, alongside Persona 5.

I guess, though maybe you could count Persona 4: Dancing All Night as well. It's for Vita, but graphically it may as well be a console game.
-
This looks nothing like Shin Megami except for that last shot off the boy overlooking the city.
-
Nintendo making a pact with the devil it seems.... Lol just kiddin
It looks like this trailer really wants to catch people's attention. Well especially japan.
-
Also adding to the last bit, this barely looks like Fire Emblem either! Think it'd have resonated with the Japanese audience if the Wii U was bigger.
-
Tbh I think this is exactly what japanese will buy a system for as sad as it may be(maybe still not a wii u lol). Perhaps atlus noticing how persona has become more popular than their OG shin megami tensei games has partially led to this.
The fire emblem bit is something I think we'll seee more of later
In this PV, many people may find it hard to understand where the essence of “Fire Emblem” comes into play. However, this will be explained more in the future, so please wait for a follow-up to this.
Anyway. I like the idea of new jrpgs on our new consoles. Xenoblade X this year. This, FF 15 and persona 5 next year. Its so very little when you think about it. Its one of my favourite genres

I'm pretty delighted by the style of this game. When it was originally announced as some vague thing that could exist, I was uncaring, but now I'm digging it and can't wait to get some HD-Atlus-loving on my WiiU.
Btw, the character designs are by "toi8," who also worked on Chain Chronicle. I recognized the style in the beginning of the trailer, but had a tough time remembering what it was from.
-
A conversation I had with a friend during the Direct yesterday pretty much sums up my feelings on it:
rhyth: atlus
rhyth: nintendo
rhyth: not persona
rhyth: japanese song
rhyth: looks like modern day fantasy sci-fi fire emblem
rhyth: this looks like garbage
rhyth: this honestly looks like shit
rhyth: but it also kind of looks like jet set radio
rhyth: so i can’t hate it

The more I watch the trailer, the more confused I get lol. Seriously what the hell
Its like they thought, what'd be the best combination to make this at least a bit of a succes on the wii U. So we have Fire emblem, Shin megami tensei. Lets add college teens! Yes that always helps. Oh yeah, and boobs. boobs everywhere please just do it. DO IT!!!

Really? That doesn't exactly scream "this is something Nintendo fans would buy."

Neither does Fire Emblem, yet that series (thankfully) persists.

I know, I wasn't trying to say that games that don't look like they'd appeal to Nintendo fans can't be successful on Nintendo consoles. Was more responding to CrazyT saying that they designed it to sell on the Wii U. While really you see games like this more often on PlayStation and PC.

this guy isn't happy about the game and hes a huge Nintendo fan

Need to see game play before I judge.

That's the thing perhaps. Nintendo fans are already there. Im not familiar with japanese culture. But isnt this kind of a "thing" in japan?
Edit: you know, i do really like the visuals. The game looks great.
-
Yes, this is aimed at a different crowd.

This interview clarifies a lot

If im reading it correctly, Nintendo requested the SMT devil survivor team to make a game they would really want to make. And then try to incorporate the IP's into it instead of the other way around. Thats what I took from it at least
-
I've really enjoyed all of the SMT and Fire Emblem games, so I'm looking forward to playing through this one.
I don't know if it'll carry over much of the strategic Fire Emblem gameplay from the looks of things though.
-
Taken on its own this could be a really interesting game. I cant believe this comes out so soon in japan. I like how they anounce the game so close to release. Hopefully the localization doesnt take too long though. Untill then within that short time we'll surely learn a lot more about the game.

They actually announced the game more than two years ago, but they didn't show what the game looks like until the latest Nintendo Direct.
-
Yeah basically, lots of people thought it was dead due to the SEGA buyout.

Oh really? I wasnt into nintendo directs back then so ive missed that

It was pretty much just a SMT x Fire Emblem logo at that point.
-
Seeing more of the game I can officially say this game looks horrible and another disturbing mismanaged POS from Nintendo.
Nintendo has always been tight with their IP's. I guess we can see now what happens when they're more flexible(see metroid) and give devs too much freedom. Nintendo has become desperate and it shows.

Here's a lot of gameplay, looks interesting:

yeah i was just gonna post that. The direction they took this is really a desservice to both series. And this is coming from someone who just got into both franchise on 3ds with SMT4 and FE: awakening
gameplay seems to follow SMT as basis which looks pretty good
-
Everytime I see this I'm left confused what it has to do with either franchise and why it wasn't just a new IP instead.
