So when was the last time a sonic game was revealed at E3? Was it unleashed? I know im kind of jumping the gun here but im kind of wondering if we're getting a sonic game this year. I cant recall everything from the past so it could be that a reveal is closer than I think.
Anyway. Sonic Boom came out last year and sonic team hasnt revealed a project since sonic lost world. With how major console releases have been cut back should we be expecting anything? Seems SEGA has neglected the new gen so far and been doubling down on PC. Im kind of worried. But then again it should be a good game this time so a long dev cycle would be welcoming for a change. What do you guys think.
-
Sonic Runners was Sonic Team wasn't it?
I know it was the D-Team or whatever, maybe the work experience kid, but still.
Either way, I wouldn't be surprised to see a Sonic announcement this year, maybe E3. I wonder if they would make it cross gen?
One thing is for certain: It'll be bad. Sorry, but you know it will be.
-
The next Sonic game better be lush. Lost World looked a like paperweight
-
I would assume it will be before E3, a bit. I don't think SEGA has shown a unveiling at E3 in a long time. There is also a rumored game that lots of GAF PS folks have been talking about, with Sony.

I'm more interested in the rumoured Sony funded game tbh, their exclusives have been pretty high profile lately.

Interesting. With rumored game you mean another SEGA game?

It probably will. This thread aint that much because im interested. Mainly wondering(hoping) if SEGA hasnt jumped ship yet after all that's happened. SEGA west has shrunk a lot and sonic is mainly a western franchise

Sony needs to get back to its roots and build strong developer teams in japan. All the western studios have either been closed or made really average games on ps4 so far imo. For me lately it really feels like a japan renaisance. Theyre putting western studio gmes to shame when it comes to gameplay

Hmm, I don't know. As negative as I am, they still publish Total War, Alien Isolation and Football Manager. PC titles mainly, yes, but still they aren't afraid to back something if it's got a name behind it.
They also wouldn't drop Sonic, even if it's more profitable to make Mobile Apps with him, they need those big mainline games to keep the character relevant.

Fuck that noise, there's no reason to be so pessimistic. If you liked Sonic Colours and Generations (and I did a great deal,) then there's every reason to believe it'll be just as good, hopefully even better.
As for that Sony game... Dare I even say what I wish it was...

Yu Suzuki returns to console development, after top Sega exec Haruki Satomi reported to him a desire to make a digital episodic game and felt that Shenmue was the right way to do it.

We all want it to be that, Sharky :(
As much as we dream though, I don't think it's going to be Jack Lumber 2, sadly.
Probably be something dumb like Shenmue III or Virtua Fighter 6...

I think I'd be more excited if AM2 and Sony teamed up to make a new IP. Maybe even a new IP from Nagoshi would be awesome.
-
To be honest, I hope Sonic Team's next project is a small one (outside of Runners) and the bigger project is saved for next year, or maybe it's time for another Sumo spin-off game?
I'd like to hear more about this project that SEGA and Sony are working together on.
-
We'll probably get a new Sonic game this year or early next year. Iizuka already confirmed Sonic is staying on consoles and I'd imagine its PS4/Xbox One and maybe Wii U.
-
If they do a WiiU version I hope it's the same game with graphical downgrades when necessary, no need for a gimped version like in the past. If it has to be gimped that much that they need to build a new game then fuck it... Don't do it. Put 100% effort into making the main game perfect.

Maybe huh. Is this implying that SEGA would assume that ps4 or even xbox one would have better sales potenial than the wii u for the type of sonic game they would anounce? Seems to me that this type of game would never be a "maybe" for the wii u. I think skylanders does better on nintendo platforms for example

What sale potential on the Wii U? The best selling Nintendo game on the Wii U is Mario Kart which is just shy of 5 million. That should indicate the sort of ceiling that a third party game will hit with the Wii U. Skylanders only sold best on Nintendo platforms because last generation Nintendo platforms were the best selling consoles. This gen only the handheld is which has been superseded by tablets/phones.
I'm not saying for sure that a Wii U version will not be released, but it might not be a priority for SEGA either. Focusing on a market that will have 30 million+ users or the market with 9 million+ users? I know which would be the safer option, especially since LEGO games and the like do sell well on the PS4 and Xbox One.

Since Colours, Sonic games are usually revealed in April or May. So far Sonic Boom has been the exception. So expect it to be announced during the next month or a half or so.

I dont really get what you're saying. 30m+ users as in xbox one and ps4 combined? And 9m+ wii u only users? Why combine the former 2 and divide them from the Wii U? Whats wrong with a 40million userbase of which 10 million are accustomed and like this sort of title?

Few reasons why;
1. Firstly both the Playstation 4 and Xbox One share similar architect, whilst the Wii U is completely different from the two. You could even throw in a PC version with little to no headache.
2. You should be aiming for similar level of graphics and/or technical specification between the two consoles. If the Playstation 4 is the lead platform you should be able to port it easily to PC/Xbox One without much of a hitch. Whilst if the Wii U is the main platform, we'd be unable to use all that extra power.
3. In the long run, both the Playstation 4 and Xbox One are going to have a much longer shelf life than the Wii U.
4. As pointed out before, if a game like Mario Kart, which sold upwards of 30 million last gen, is going to severely contract to 5 million sales, how much do you think Sonic would even with a fairly decent game?
5. Of course, SEGA could do what they did with Unleashed and develop a Wii U exclusive version, but the console just does not have the userbase to justify such a decision.
So as I said, this is a maybe.
-
there is a better case in having a 3DS version instead of Wii U...of course Dimps would probably be the ones developing that.
-

Oh yeah totally agree with that idea and not so strangely enough, the best selling version for Lost World and Sonic Boom was the Nintendo 3DS version. I think regardless of which console, Dimps will be developing the Nintendo exclusive version of the game.

These really say nothing to me. Ive seen shelf space only increase in the last year. Mentioning mario kart sales going down really doesnt seem relevent do the decision despite 5 million being a great number.
And for 5 thats gonna depend on how ambitious the next sonic game will be. Also still plenty of cross gen games that look good relative to the platform.
We also spoke about lego, skylanders etc which are much better indicator. I guess it is reasonable to think maybe as in there's no certainty. I mean maybe there wont be a game at all. Maybe its exclusive to ps4 alone. Maybe another wii u exclusive.
Personally though I think skipping a wii u version based of lost world would seem like a conclusion expected from a SEGA. I hope they dont forget about blaming anything besides the wii u's performance. Because another average game will certainly again not meet expectations
-

That's all really anecdotal to me too though. I've seen shelf space decrease massively for the Wii U, yeah sure it's still in your local game store but what about supermarkets? I see almost no Wii U presence in almost all major supermarkets.
Besides that comment was merely indicating the Wii U doesn't have much long to live whilst the Playstation 4 and Xbox One probably have just over 5 years left before a replacement is released.
Finally the 5 million is a great number, but is it a great number when you overlook its predecessor did 35 million. What it should illustrate however is that there has been a sales collapse, why wouldn't Sonic's sales collapse just like every other major Nintendo seeing declining sales from previous installments? It certainly indicates to me that the collapse for the series sales is not just down to critical acclaim but the platform itself being extremely toxic.
And for 5 thats gonna depend on how ambitious the next sonic game will be. Also still plenty of cross gen games that look good relative to the platform.
There's more to technical specifications than how good something looks. There's all the processing and as we saw with Sonic: Lost World, SEGA had to drop the graphics down a few notches to get 60 fps. The extra power just helps them get around issues much easier rather than optimizing the game as much as they use to in the past.
We also spoke about lego, skylanders etc which are much better indicator. I guess it is reasonable to think maybe as in there's no certainty. I mean maybe there wont be a game at all. Maybe its exclusive to ps4 alone. Maybe another wii u exclusive.
Most of those games sold best on the Xbox 360. Really it's going to come down to which console is the best selling platform and that honour will fall onto the Playstation 4. Sonic Heroes most successful platform was the PS2 despite there already being a strong fanbase on the Gamecube but it was 4 million on the PS2 and 2 million on the Gamecube. The same, long term, will happen here. The issue is the Gamecube was doing better than the Wii U and the hardware really wasn't leaps and bound ahead.
Personally though I think skipping a wii u version based of lost world would seem like a conclusion expected from a SEGA. I hope they dont forget about blaming anything besides the wii u's performance. Because another average game will certainly again not meet expectations
Skipping the Wii U, if they do, will be down to the factors I mentioned. The console is not known for good sales and although titles like Mario Kart have done well, titles like Destiny, WatchDog, FIFA etc all eclipse it on the PS4 I'm sure, and future titles like Batman will do so too.
I'm not sure it's a foregone conclusion, but SEGA and every major third party has more than enough reason to skip the Wii U if they want to. We had Alien: Isolation ready for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 and yet that game didn't come to the Wii U.

I kinda agree with it. I think Wii U only has a little more than 2 years left in its 5 year life span.
SEGA and Ubisoft are the only two developer that stuck around longer than most other publishers.
But now look what's happened. SEGA's Tembo skipped WiiU and Ubisoft even refuses to release their finished game now.

Expect new Nintendo's console in 2018.
-
The thing is, this is a long time coming. Nintendo consoles are on the way out and I don't think the next one will do much better. People want Nintendo to have a comparable console with a focus on online and good ui. Nintendo already said the next Nintendo console one upgrade the specs cuz the consumer wants a new experience. To me it seems like Nintendo is done with the hardcore and want to recapture a casual market that had moved on to mobile.
-
Well, they will need to reutlize all the parts from the WiiU Gamepad,so...maybe that Nintendo NX could be nothing more than a tablet with a wireless receptor and buttons.
For the next Sonic game annoucement , it could be this 2 months or E3 if there are no news whatsoever until 2nd week of May...

I think you raise good points overall but the mario kart one seems kind of an unfair and unreasonable in the context of this discussion. That would be like me saying that the attach rate is reason to say that despite the small installbase games still sell well on wii U. My point basically, no other nintendo console reached wii's grand succes which obviously inflated software numbers alot. The fact its sold 5 million on a 10 million installbase is still phenomenal. Chance that it may exceed gamecube's mario kart when all's said and done on a smaller installbase. 35 million was an insane number bruh.
Overall very interesting read guys. I would be very surprised seeing sonic get skipped on wii u. I always felt like everything should be possible with the wii u compared to for example why sonic generations did skip the wii because of power. Either way honestly, having argued all this, im mostly hoping for a pc version to happen, but wouldnt mind some positive news for a console I appreciate. Id definitly double dip in that case

I think Bandai Namco stuck around as well even if we don't include Smash Bros. 4 Though I don't think the next console will be in 2018, more like 2017. I suspect that the recent Zelda delay has something to do with it.

I think the next Sonic game has a lot riding on it. After Boom, people are going to be looking for a serious palette cleanser, even though ST didn't even develop it.

I agree with this, I don't think Sonic Boom was as bad as 06, but it's gotten a lot of flack and generally got crucified all over.
I hope it's a legitimately great game, not just 'acceptable'. I thought Generations was okay, but nothing special, I got bored by the time I got to the first boss (I need to go back and play more, but it really didn't capture me).
I'm expecting it to be bad though.
-
If you got bored of Sonic Generations before the first boss then simply you just don't like current Sonic games, regardless of quality. The general consensus is that Generations and Colours are both good if not great Sonic games. And I wouldn't change much about the series going forward. I especially love the on the fly perspective switching and I think Sonic Colours especially got the right level of platforming vs speed.
It's the same with me and GTA games, I don't doubt they're well made games or whatever, but I never find them compelling, I end up just goofing about, looking up the all weapons cheats and killing people until I'm bored.

That's very likely. By comparison I really enjoyed Rayman Origins, but couldn't get into either Sonic Colours or Sonic Gens. I do want to give Gens another shot, as I feel there's potential in it. I still feel like it's not up to the standards of the originals, but that could legitimately be some nostalgia.
I thought GTA 3-SA were good games, but GTAIV was shit, and I didn't even play GTAV. I don't think GTAIV was a well made game outside of technical feats.
-
The general consensus is that Generations and Colours are both good if not great Sonic games.
Aye, and here's the problem. Gens and Colors are good games that can be made very, very enjoyable if you really take the time to appreciate all the things they got right while simultaneously accepting their flaws. However, I wouldn't expect a normal non-sonic fan to have to do that. Games like Rayman Origins and Mario Galaxy need no explaining, and have very few flaws. Sonic games need to be better at selling themselves at first glance. They need more polish, more forgiving level design, and a generally lower barrier of entry to be considered more than just good.
-
To be fair the new Rayman games are better platformers than both Sonic and Mario. Which is surprising since the original Rayman games were absolute crap.
But Sonic COULD be better than Rayman, Colours and Generations are on the right track imo... They just need more time in the oven and more polish to go that extra mile.
-
I think Rayman was helped by the great 2D style as well, helped it stand out. It would be amazing if they made a true 2D Sonic game again, but that will likely never happen.

Meh, I'm not all that fussed about returning to sprites and such. Just make the game play well and look nice and I'm there. As I said I really dig the perspective switching of recent Sonic games.

I will not accept this. Replay them, come back and don't even dare to tell me that Rayman 2 isn't one of the best 3D platformers ever made!
-
Rayman 3 is better
-
I never played Rayman 3 (I remember it was met with a rather lukewarm critical reception) but Rayman 2 is fucking fantastic. It's honestly better than SA1 and maybe even Mario 64/Banjo at times. Talk about under-appreciated. Dat danny elfman tier music.
-
I was half-joking. I dont get the love for Rayman 2, its pretty good, but I preffered Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 at the time.
I guess I dont mind gimmicky things over purity

Not sure what you mean by purity but rayman 2 is magical and a goddamn oddity for 2 reasons
1) there are no glitches. None. It is a technical masterpiece. Compare this with SA1 and good grief.
2) the controls and camera are smooth as hell. It literally almost never gets in the way of gameplay.
I mean, it may not be everyone's cup of tea but its a brilliantly realized game, especially for 2000 or what have you.

I love Rayman 2. But it wasn't perfect.

Eh, sprites are nice and all but I prefer 2.5D over modern 2D sprites any day of the week. There's something to appreciate about sprites made in the past but these days sprites aren't nearly as great.

Rayman II on the DC looked amazing and blew most games away and in many ways in the equal for Mario 64 . Its a better made game than Sonic Adv, but I liked Sonic Adv more myself

Not sure if the look of the new Rayman games can be grouped together with other modern 2D sidescrollers, considering most of them use pixel art.

I mean games by bigger publisher. So stuff like Tembo, Rayman etc, unless I'm missing a specific publisher that has been making games using pixel art? Not sure.

Depends on the game. Look at KoFXIII's sprite work, it's gorgeous. I agree that it doesn't always look good, but I do love a really nice 2D game. It is a personal thing though.

I wasn't saying sprite work looks bad, just the particular style of Rayman, Tembo etc I'm less fond of. A Sonic game where the sprites are animated on a frame by frame basis would look awesome, but I think well made 3D art direction can be fantastic too.
-
I love the way Rayman and Tembo look. I really like the crisp clean HD, cartoony feel. Especially the environments. I wish Sonic 4 had used a similar design.
-
I think a lot of people hoped Sonic 4 would have been different.
Rayman games look like playable paintings, I love it.

I like 2d sprites as well but for some reason a lot of low res 2d sprite games dont translate well into HD. Can anyone imagine how metal slug would look? Probably lose a lot of its detail and charm

Keep it the same then. Or you could find a way to do it well, again, look at the jump from KoFXI to KoFXIII and they managed to keep the charm and personality.
-
If SNK can match promo art as in-game graphics, that would be nice:

That Framwork engine of Ubi is amazing , and I have to say that Ori onthe XBox One looks amazing too . SEGA Japan had its own wonderful looking Canvas engine but made little use of it sadly.
