There was a time I couldn't have given two shits about Sonic, I didn't buy a single console Sonic game from Sonic Adventure 2 until Sonic Colours. Sonic Heroes, Sonic 06, Shadow, those Wii Story Book onrails games? The spin offs? Absolute garbage. Was pretty prepared to never buy a Sonic game again. Sonic Colours CGI trailer comes out, took one look, thought 'nope another steamy pile of shit...' But then gameplay, and holy shit... Loved it. Same goes for Generations, loved it. Suddenly I'm a Sonic fan again... (Sonic Boom can suck it.)
Give me the polish of Sonic Lost World, the speed and graphics of Sonic Generations and the level designed of Sonic Colours and I will give you my undivided attention... I've been waiting for a new Sonic game in the vein of Sonic Generations since I finished it in 2012.

So in mid June the PSO2 lobby will be Sonic themed and this cat enemy will appear in a Sonic costume (pictured below) Maybe that's when the next Sonic will be announced? Or maybe when Sonic Runners is finally released outside of beta.

Starting the Sonic Cycle early are we?
Just kidding, Sonic is showing more promise recently. I still expect the new game to be mediocre to bad, but they've been slowly getting better. They seem to be one step back, two steps forward instead of the other way around the last few games.
I'm hoping the next Sonic game is something special, but as someone who didn't really like Colours or Generations I guess there won't be much for me in it regardless. I should get back to Generations, I only got as far as Sky Sanctuary then had to do side missions to unlock keys or some bullshit.
-
I'm a bit glad that Sonic Team is taking their time. Personally not the biggest Sonic fan, I'm more of a SEGA fan, as in I like their other titles more, but when Sonic Team does it right its pretty interesting to see. I hope they don't release a new game till 2016 and its pretty good.
-
Admittedly Sonic isn't in my top five SEGA series, it may scratch the top 10 though, but right now I'm totally up for a new 3D Sonic game.... So long as it follows the Colours/Generations kind of gameplay and hopefully improves on it further.
-

Didn't they play completely differently though? I thought Colours was really a spin-off kind of thing.

I might be the only one on this lovely planet to have loved both Sonic Booms (and the Cartoon Network show was pretty cool as well).
But I guess that's what you get with SEGA... I'm also the only one around to NOT hate Aliens: Colonial Marines though I'm a huge fan of the Alien franchise and (of course) love Alien: Isolation a million times more.
But back to Sonic - I can see why so many fans hate these games, but it makes me angry to think of the reasons.
Sonic is part of my life since my early childhood when I first played the original trilogy on my father's SEGA Genesis. The first Sonic games that did not quite make me happy (and by that, I mean I was f***ing annoyed and I raged anytime I tried to play it...) were the adventures on that ominous Dreamcast console, because that stupid 3D speed running was not controllable anymore and the camera angles were a gazillion times as disturbing as in the first Spyro... these games made me leave Sonic for a long time, until I discovered that playing games has become a culture and I should consider to become a part of it and I revisited the old Genesis games a few times, not for long though. And revisiting them, I felt that even though Sonic still had a strong appeal to me as a gamer, the gameplay was... well, not so much great really. I mean, you are just running and running, from one "increases-speed-and-makes-Sonic-run-even-if-you-don't push-any-button"-thingy to another, and while you miss all the beautiful level design, you don't even have to do anything. He's running anyway. And THAT's why, when I tried out the so harshly criticized Sonic Boom spin-offs, I was satisfied. It still had the obligatory running-fast-sequences but it would also let me walk around in non-linear (!!!) levels, play as four different characters with four different abilities, looking to rather find all secret items and areas then just to have finished it faster than the last time, and I felt like being set back into the good ol' days of 3D jump 'n' run / action adventures of the Playstation era, like Spyro and such. And the Nintendo 3DS version is almost a Metroidvania, a genre of which there can't be enough games today.
I'm no lover of the modern gaming culture and I love when new games have an old school touch. And this was truly old school, even if it tried to be modern in some parts and failed.
Plus: those goddamn obligatory 3D third person running segments that have always pissed me off and will always piss me off and which I will NEVER understand how ANYONE was able to like or even tolerate, in Sonic Boom they work as well as they never have down before, neither in Sonic Adventure DX nor in Sonic Generations, which was in parts a good game (thanks to the beautiful 2,5-D-levels). They did NOT make me rage-quit the game, and that means something.
Sonic shares his place on top of my SEGA (and maybe even my all time favorite) game list with Alien Isolation and Company of Heroes 2 and I will buy the next "Sonic Whatever" anyway, even if it's announced to be a Hatsune Miku crossover xD
-
Welcome to the forum Sheep!
Didn't they play completely differently though? I thought Colours was really a spin-off kind of thing.
Na they're pretty similar, same mix of 3D/2D perspectives, speed sections and platforming sections. The main difference was the whole Wisp thing in Colours which gave Sonic power ups and was pretty good. In some ways Colours was the better game in terms of level design, had some great light puzzle elements and platforming. Sonic Generations was far better graphically, better level set pieces and the speed sections were great imo. Another great feature of Generations was the way you could build a custom move set for Sonic. Loved that.

Even though I disagree with most of what you said, I think theres some truth about the gameplay. It has always been kind of automated indeed and a lot of the environment and level design just flies by past you making it hard to appreciate on first playthrough. But this was a lot less the case with the classics. I dont think what you're saying counts for the latter levels of most sonic games. but esprcially doesnt count for sonic 1 and sonic&knuckles. So what do you think of sonic 1? Its become my favourite of the bunch for not applying to your description
And yes welcome!
-
This break is just what Sonic needed.
I've noticed "internet opinion" has been that "Sonic games were not that bad after all". It takes time to fully recover from the blunders between Heroes and Colors, but if the next game is excellent he's right back to the limelight
-
The thing that always gets me is that Sonic titles just aren't as polished as they should be for a flagship franchise. Like SEGA has had this issue in the last ten years, every title they release either seems unfinished or rushed to the market. They just can't continue doing this. After 2012 they said they would focus on lesser IPs that made money and I thought that mean't they would polish before release but we got:
Sonic Boom, Sonic Lost World, Rome II, Alien Colonial Marines.
Not the most polish games in the world. Sure Alien: Isolation was polished and was a good game. But SEGA has had a history of sending out Creative Assembly's last console game unfinished, Viking: Battle of Asgard.
Even though we like Sonic Generations, the game wasn't completely glitch free and polished. I mean, that last boss... it feels like Sonic Team starts developing the game from the start and sorta don't finish up the end.
-
Basically Generations was a new start from what they've done in Unleashed and 2.5 years weren't in a good schedule.
I'm grateful that now that creative Team of ST has things in works with 4 years and a little more of development to receive all the neccesary feedback to make the game more completed. I hope they are doing that.
-
About the polish, I agree but I think it has got progressively better with each new release. (Again talking about Sonic Team games, not Sonic Boom.) If there was one thing going for Sonic Lost World, I would say it was VERY polished. The animations were great, the platforming felt responsive the aesthetic was brilliant.
Sonic Lost World stumbled by design... Some weird choices in the way it played, the whole cylinder levels, the tacked on Wisps... But polish wise, I think it was the most polished 3D Sonic ever.
Here is a particular level I thought was great:
EDIT: Damn! Embeded videos don't let you start at a sepsific time... Skip to 21 minutes, 11 seconds for the level I mean.
https://youtu.be/Pf31xakRr3g?t=21m11s
-
^Sonic lost world could have been such a great game if it had any sort of inertia(if that's the right word). Really liked some of the level design
-
Thanks for all your welcome ;D
I dont think what you're saying counts for the latter levels of most sonic games. but esprcially doesnt count for sonic 1 and sonic&knuckles. So what do you think of sonic 1? Its become my favourite of the bunch for not applying to your description
You're absolutely right, of course. There is no doubt about the fact that the first three Sonic games were awesome and maybe they're still the best entries in the franchise. Sonic The Hedgehog was great, but it can't be my favorite in the series since two things are missing: the spin and Tails! ;) So the second game was harder, but it had Tails, so it was a jump forward. The peak of Sonic games in my opinion that was not quite reached again until today, was Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Cause Knuckles! And it's graphics were the most beautiful I think, they were more soft and natural than that mechanically looking Green Hill and Casino Zones.
I would never ever try to criticize the old Sonic games for what they were. I was just trying to argue that some hard-boiled fans of long-time-franchises sometimes look at new steps too critically. Of course, Mario has beaten Sonic so often when it comes to bare game quality, but though I love Mario as well (who does not), I will always prefer and respect Sonic more, since the Sonic Team has tried to expand the flagship in one way or another, and yes, they failed multiple times, they failed horribly sometimes, but I prefer to have some Sonic games I truly love and some that I just don't want to touch than to have to be happy because on new year's eve I already know there'll be either a new solid Sonic Kart, or a new solid Sonic Bros., or a new solid Super Smash Hedgehog, or a new solid Sonic Party, or ...
And as I look at the Sonic franchise, if I can't have my old blue SEGA Genesis Hedgehog back, I would be glad to take the "Sonic Boom"-Sonic rather than that stupid, arrogant, impotent 3D Sonic from the adventures...
-
...but though I love Mario as well (who does not)...
Me. I don't like its physics and I don't like the basic gameplay mechanic of jumping on top of enemies.
But, somewhat back on topic, I appreciate your explanation of why you like Sonic Boom, but speaking as a Sega fan who is generally mystified by the Sonic fanbase*, I feel your distaste for the other games just underscores that Sonic fans are an irredeemably polarized community, and there will never be a universally celebrated Sonic game because everybody wants something different based on their expectations rather than just being open-minded and getting into whatever Sonic Team comes up with. Ultimately the only thing Sonic Team could really do differently is just to polish the games better, assuming they are given the necessary time and actually have the necessary skill.
*or should I say "fanbase/mob of hysterical haters who can never be satisfied"?
-
I agree, SEGA have sort of shot themselves in the foot by making so many variations of the Sonic formula, now its impossible to please everyone. But there are some things that MOST people enjoy... Which they can expand on.
I wrote an article about this a while back, some of you may remember:
http://segabits.com/blog/2014/11/07/opnion-what-modern-sonic-can-learn-from-classic-sonic/
-
Personally I love Sonic more as character than the game.
And oddly enough my three favorite Sonic games are the spin-offs :
1. Sonic 3D Blast (the Genesis version, not the saturn version, I hate Saturn version's music)
2. Sonic Battle (GBA, bring back Emerl !!!)
3. Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (3DS, love the 12 hours story mode, how Mario chars interact with Sonic chars)
May be that's why I'm one of the few (along with Sheep) that could enjoy Sonic Boom.
Just think it as spin-off with another genre and playstyle.
That's mine. So.. What's yours 3 favorite Sonic games, guys? I'm curious.
-

Sonic 1
Sonic 2
Sonic 3+K
Also, Sonic Jam is the best compilation game ever made. EVER MADE.
The games were ports to Saturn, not emulation, and all the extras were phenomenal.

This is so damn true. It's the quintessential classic Sonic release. The original games play great, there are new modes, and the bonus history stuff is such an amazing time capsule.

Sonic 3D world on the disc was mind-blowing at the time too. Closest thing we got to a true 3D Sonic game on Saturn.

I'd like to throw my hat in and say if they expanded on Sonic World forumla instead of the speedbooster gameplay for Sonic Adventure, we'd have had a 3D Sonic game that would have stood the test of time.
Really loved the design of that small world, so much to see and explore!
-
^I agree, something about Sonic World just felt really 'right'. Sonic Adventure was great at the time, but looking at how it was long race tracks compared to Sonic World's more exploratory level it really was a different thing.
I guess even Christmas NiGHTS with Sonic was more of that kind of formula too.

Was just gonna say the same. What could have been smh. I think its time for me to dust off my saturn now

Yeah it's amazing really that they went from this to Sonic Adventure, I'd really be interested in knowing what caused such a drastic change in terms of level design.

Well at least we got this

Nah I cant mock the game too much as I really loved some aspects about it. But something about the game definitly feels like some sort of transitioning was taking place. You could still feel some of that old spice, but they essentially ended up wanting a sonic adventure 2.
-
For anyone who's seen Sonic Extreme footage, was that more akin to Sonic World, or was it 'tracks' like Sonic Adventure?
Also, is it just me, or do Nintendo fans just find it impossible to 'get' Sonic? You know the ones I'm talking about, they never owned or played anything other than Nintendo consoles, then get Sonic on Virtual Console and said 'Yeah I don't really like it, I don't really get it'.
It's happened to me with two unrelated friends.
CrazyT: I actually LOVED Sonic Adventure when it first came out. I mean, it probably wasn't as good as the old games, but at the time it was amazing. The different playstyles and seemingly huge world to explore was so much fun. I feel like it changed directions, but the series also went downhill from there.
Don't tell me you weren't frothing at the mouth seeing this screenshot in 1998:
-
I've seen it alot Mang, there are loads of people who grew up on the NES/SNES that just do not get Sonic and call it a simple go right to win type of game. I think it balances out though, I know equally loads of SEGA fans on the Mega Drive who just don't get the classic Mario games because they find it linear and compact (I fall into that category myself, I'm not a big fan of classic Mario games bar the Wario Land games)
Also even though I was ragging on Sonic Adventure, I only meant it as in the game being able to stand the test of time. I don't get this revisionist history that says Sonic Adventure was always a bad game, it wasn't. When it launched in 1998 it was amazing and everything about it was state of the art and I loved it to pieces.
-
@Mang
Imagine having a dreamcast without a memory card and having to start the game over everytime, unnable to skip the cutscenes. Well that was me basically lol. And I loved it. But its also why that particular intro cutscene is printed in my head. Its funny because I still occasionally say em out loud for jokes to those who understand the references lol.
I absolutly adored and still adore the game. That picture you posted is also from my favourite stage, coicidently also one with the least speedboosters in the game. The good parts of sonic adventure(what i meant with old spice) encapture exactly what id want to see in a sonic game. But I think that ive become part of a minority in this.
I like a lot about sonic adventure but a legit 3d game in the old style like sonic jam would have been great to have before the "rebooting". It will always feel like we've missed something
-
Haha, I didn't have a memory card for the first week or so either!
Sega botched the Australian launch and all the first party games were a week late, ditto all the accessories. I did end up buying a third party memory card, but it wasn't with the console, so I did have a while where I had to start the game each time I turned the system on.
I've been watching an LP of Sonic Adventure, and a lot of the commentary is 'lol this game is so bad' but every now and then they interject with 'At the time this was phenomenal' or 'this holds up okay'.
And everyone bashes Big the Cat, but I had fun with those fishing segments. I can understand people not enjoying it, but I actually really liked the crazy variations in gameplay.

Meant to mention this too. It's interesting, I've never really played a Mario game start to finish apart from NSMB on DS, which I actually quite enjoyed.
I should try the older ones one day and see if I fall into the same pattern.
-
I still love Sonic Adventure, but will admit it does not hold up well, especially with the ports. I stand by my statement that the game was a Dreamcast classic.

Let me guess, Two Best Friends/Super Best Friends?
Yup. Matt keeps bashing the shit out of the game and laughing at how bad cutscenes and glitches are. Liam defends it saying that it's still a good game and holds up for the most part and that at the time it was phenomenal. Woolie is kind of just along for the ride.
They did make a good point when they said 'You realise Metal Gear Solid came out BEFORE this game, right?' in regards to the cutscenes being great for the time.
I was dying when they mentioned Sonic pulling Froggy out of Chaos and then crushing him a-la Raiden with Electrolytes from MGR.
-
Sonic Adventure is an all time Dreamcast classic. Playing the DX versions make the game seem inconsistent, because of the updated character models and some textures being clearer than others.
On the Dreamcast everything was as it was, and it was great. Even the gameplay is tweaked for Dreamcast controls, so the gameplay on the Dreamcast is much more fluid
-

haven't watched the playthrough myself but eh, I'm not surprised with Matt, then again I'm not too fond of him...though yea I wouldn't say the cutscenes were that great, especially when SEGA/Sonic Team made little effort with the voice acting (Deem Bristow was the best of the bunch).
That Froggy joke reminds me of their 06 video when they were at the Cerebus boss and made a remark about the boss looking like something Hideki Kamiya might have done/ripped off or something to that effect.
-
My three favourite Sonic games are probably Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic Adventure (admittedly based on nostalgia and the way I felt playing it with my pals.) and Sonic Colours... Honourably mentions; Sonic 3+k, Sonic Rush, Sonic Generations.
-
Some of the stuff was cheesy even when it came out. But honestly what platformer had that amount of voices and did it better? Sure, Metal Gear Solid came out a year prior, but that's a acceptation to the rule of bad early voice acting (tho it still had some bad VA work).
Personally always find Mario having a stereotypical Italian accent to be so cringey, the worse part is that they still think its OK to have it.
-
Fair point, I'm just recalling comments made by Ryan Drummond, who was describing the voice acting process of Sonic Adventure, they (or at least the casting director) pretty much had them do it one take with no context. But really, it is no worse than other voice acting work that came out at that time (I guess whatever fits their narrative).
Speaking of stereotypical accents, boy MGS had them with Naomi and Mei Ling...I think they were phased out when Kojima wanted to come off less cheesy.
-
Yeah, specifically Mei Ling was really bad. I replaced the game again a few years ago and I didn't remember her being so... stereotypical Chinese.
-
Looks like Jun Senoue got a new Shadow themed guitar. Doesn't necessarily mean anything, but SEGA Japan doesn't make him guitars for no reason. They could of made it because it's the 10th anniversary of Shadow the Hedgehog this year!

still think Shadow the Hedgehog would be a much better game without gunplay and more streamlined levels.

You mean if Shadow had played like Sonic Colours or Generations? Basically Sonic but with Shadow... Would have been totally down for that!

Still should have guns
Running like a madman and shooting everything in sight is pretty awesome

Guns don't fit these characters though.. Maybe you could do it in some levels playing as Eggman. Running around shooting laser beams at everything.

pfff...who cares its already stupid and ridicilous from the beginning.
-
I think its sad that SEGA never really explored a slightly new way to play Shadow that still made him fun. The gunplay didn't work in my opinion. I think this is something that Nintendo does really well with their side games. They sit and try to come up with slight off gameplay decisions that make those characters feel unique and give them their own games.
Example: Yoshi's jump, tossing eggs and eating enemies. Kirby's suck and power change/flying ability.
I think Sonic Team should have made a platforming game based on Shadow, with time traveling and have a gimmick of using Chaos control. The issue with Shadow is that his gameplay is 1:1 with Sonic really and Sonic Team would have to focus on making him play different and fun, which just seems impossible.
Personally I rather have a Tails solo game that is more in the vain of like, Mario 64/Banjoo collect-a-thon since technically Tails makes gadgets. Would be cool to platform, explore and collect items to make cool new gadgets that you can use in a metroidvania type world that opens up slowly.
But hey... Shadow is 'cool', so whatever.

This would be the only thing that makes me genuinely hyped for a Sonic game. Sonic v Shadow RIVAL BATTLE a-la Lumen Sage/Vergil/Devil Hand.
Having said that, as if Sega would work with Platinum again after they apparently stole Sega's money and spent it on Champaigne and prostitutes while working on Bayonetta 2.

Could make a batshit insane super fast paced shooter with Shadow. Shooting robots to keep it PG, but just make it off the wall fast and fun.
A Tails metroidvania style game would be awesome!

if they make another Shadow game I will literally bring super soakers to sonic team, wear shades, light a cigar in my mouth, and shoot everyone with "I am all of me" blasting. Then I would check myself into an institution.
