Omg, why did i wait so long to buy this. This game is incredible!!! I've only played 3 levels, but seriously...
-
It's bretty gewd. The bosses suck, though. And that's a huge understatement for the final, Jesus.
Why hasn't Sega followed this format for future games is beyond me. A little work on the 2D physics and it would be perfect, although there's mods for that for the PC version.
-
Its one of my favourite Sonic games. Maybe even my favourite 3D Sonic.
-
Classic Sonic part is a bit overhyped. They did a great job bringing 2D Sonic back on console finally, but geez I think the 3D parts were better and I don't have any problems with either character model. Even in one of the better Modern Sonic games, fanbase still finds ways to make me cringe.
That said, this game is amazing and one of the best console platformers easily. I think we will see something similar for next Sonic game. Lost World deserves its parkour revisited, but Sonic Team just needs to stick with what works for the most part.
-
I actually prefer the Classic Sonic levels more, it could be because I haven't played em in a while and it brings me back.
The only complaints so far are that there aren't enough classics from the Classic games brought back, we only got those 3 at the beginning. Although, I haven't played all of the lvls yet, so I don't know if they add more. Also, still a bit of slowdown in some portion of lvls as well as glitchy parts.

No that's it for classic Sonic unfortunately.
Instead please enjoy this segment from Sonic 06. Though I'll admit classic Sonic's levels are great through out, absolutely love the second to last one.

It's by far one of my favourite Sonic games. I'm really surprised they haven't stuck to this formula and just worked on refining it. It fits Sonic perfectly.
The only real refinements I'd like to see is to slow Sonic down a little bit as the boost does become a bit unwieldy at times and during the slower moments in the 3D sections, Sonic's controls are a bit floaty - perhaps they could address this with something out of Lost Worlds with a trigger that allows more accurate control when held.

Yep Both Sonic Gen and Colors were HUGE steps forwards and its a shame that Lost World (while by no means a bad game) was such a step backwards . Love Gen and hope the team just build on it for the next game
-
Sonic Team has been really quite lately, while I agree Lost World was a step backwards, I think they got the message on it and will probably move more towards the obvious directions fans want (Generations/Colors).
But ya, Sonic Generation imo is a underrated game by mainstream gamers and even 'hardcore ones' (I like Fallout and I post online guys).

Im suspicious that they won't return to the boost formula. Iizuka has stated in interviews that those games weren't fun to make and were very taxing development wise which is why SLW exists in the first place.
Maybe a happy medium can be achieved?
-
I would not mind if there is less boost and more formula around platforming. I still think they should cater to the boosting crowd tho, but make it a separate team/project. Sort of how Mario has like Classic Mario, Super SNES Mario and the 'New Super Mario' where it all has their own feel and look.
I think SEGA would be smarter to capitalize on this than, lets say, making Boom games.
-
Although Sonic is a platformer, I do feel the speed was a key component in its success. I can't play Mario games as I find them incredibly tedious and slow in comparison.
Okay, how about returning to the traditional way of doing it?
Sonic starts slow, builds speed and through skill and momentum which intern rewards the player with new paths etc?

preposterous

With Iizuka having all the time he needs, I think this could be pretty good. He was always frustrated of having to few resources when he was Sonic Team USA.

As a long time Sonic fan since the age of 5, here's what I think:
Shortly after Sonic Lost World came out, there was a rumor floating on the Internet that Sonic Team isn't moving back to the boost-to-win formula, and neither the Lost World formula, either. And back during the initial announcement of Sonic Boom, Iizuka already stated that ST is already working on another mainstream game with more "traditional gameplay and mechanics", so I'd assume that they're working on a system similar (if not the same) to the momentum based platforming of the Genesis games as well as the Dreamcast Adventure series to an extent, and level design that's more reminiscent of those two eras. If that's the case, I'd be grateful!
I wouldn't say throw out Lost World's mechanics entirely, either--they could just reprogram the Dash trigger from LW into exclusively a Super Peel-Out/Parkour trigger. The Parkour mechanic is a fun idea, just with the right level design, it can be used to think outside the box and take shortcuts that no gamer would even expect!
Although it's leaving me to wonder if ST is still currently using the Havok physics engine for Sonic games, or if they switched to an easier system to work with.
-
The only thing I want from the Adventure era is the Chao garden, everything else has been made better with games like Sonic Colours.
-
I never played Colours. Is it better than Generations? I'm having a blast with this game. Haven't enjoyed a Sonic game in years.

Ohh...interesting. I hope they do move to that design and mechanics. Hopefully, TGS will show it :)

It's level design is a lot more boxy without many slopes and it's smaller levels have a sort of old school Mario design (random obstacles in the sky) personally I think Sonic Generations has the better and more varied level designs but Sonic Colours has a lot more content if I recall correctly.
-
^ I agree although Colors is not the "Sonic game" that I like (without any intention of offending anybody but this game is for Nintendo Fans and their likeness in platformers).
It's funny that ST since 2005 use their second division creativity speaking to do some "experiments" in their projects and take the good things about them.
From Rush (2005), they take the Boost gameplay to Unleashed (2008).
From Secret Rings (2007), they take "Sonic as the only primordial character" and the sales-wise kid-friendly demographic to Unleashed (2008).
For Generations (2011), it's mostly a combination of Unleashed, Colors and other things.
For the 2016/25th Anniversary game, I recall they're gonna use the better things from Lost World (2013) like the better implemented 360° control, not so much emphasis on speed and badnicks (man, in LW there are a lot of them).

I think Generations' achilles heel is its split gameplay styles tbh. Colors has only one style of gameplay that it builds on. The result is the most focused game in years. There are definitely a lot of shortcuts taken to expand the content (chopped up bits of other acts repackaged as new levels) though and I realize its style of platforming won't be everyone's cup of tea. I thought I would enjoy Generations' classic sonic levels but I ultimately found them to be a complete drag. The physics are frustrating and the levels are very linear and restrictive. I only ever replay the modern sonic levels when I play the game now.
For my money Colors is the superior experience if only by a small margin. I completely understand why some would prefer Gens though. The thing about Colors vs Gens discussions is that it's important to remember that we all won with those games.
Here's hoping they continue to make quality games like those in the future.
-
Aye, both are great games. If I had to choose one however, Gen would get the vote. Colours had too much padding with special stages etc for my liking.
Despite preferring Gen, I'm surprised Colours hasn't made its way over to other consoles and PC mind.
-
What I liked about Gens was that they took the "filler" acts and moved them to the mostly optional missions.
With Colors, there appeared to be more content but then you'd start playing and realize that many of the acts were small skill-based stages. I actually have a cheat sheet post-it note in my copy of the game listing which acts are the regular ones so I don't have to hunt around.
Not to say that the missions in Gens or additional acts in Colors were bad, I enjoyed a lot of them, but it was nice to have them separated.

Except of course, finding the missions and trying to remember the fun ones in Gens was a nightmare. Not that any of them were good enough to revisit. Perhaps that's why it's best they're separated. Bouncing music notes with vector was a bad time.
Also I would argue none of the Colors acts were filler. Thats why it's fun to just play egg shuttle which lets you experience levels in order just like the classics. I was sorely disappointed that the feature was absent from Gens.

I dunno, collecting x amount of rings or balloons etc never appealed to me in either Colours or Gen. I'd rather they'd flesh out real mini games like they had beating the ghost sonic to the goal. This could be a great place to put some of the other Sonic characters like:
Espio - using his chameleon (only works standing still) ability to sneak to the goal undetected.
Tails - Flying missions.
Knuckles - Power through waves of enemies using a range of aerial, digging and fighting attacks.
Gamma - Shoot your way to the goal.

God no, keep that out of Sonic games!
-
So you'd rather have mini games like "collect balloons" over and over? They're far worse as they're just slap dash attempts of prolonging a games length with arbitrary means.

I'd exchange all that for one more zone with Sonic playable.

Sounds like something i'd actually enjoy. The boosting is what i've always disliked about Modern Sonic games. As much as i loved the speed of some Sonic Unleashed levels, i never cared for having to boost all of the game time and the camera angles messed me up a lot.
If Colors has more platforming then i might buy that as well. Generations has been pretty great thus far. I love how much this game is bringing me back, it's awesome.
-
In Generations, the boost is more measurable than Unleashed.
There is a right balance between platforming and speed-sections in Modern Stages although the control in 3D is not so friendly with a rotation input. You can tell that if you try to boost without any energy in the respective gauge and you can see some wind trails going in a straight forward direction giving no room to look back or anything besides that "vector of force" : -P
I hope that they will utilize that "experiment" from the Zelda DLC for LW and do a mixed gameplay style between what they do in the last two games. That would give a room for multiple playable characters and more.

A trick I usually find best is to ignore the temptation to use the boost unless you're on a straight line. That way, you'll find secret paths from timed manoeuvres etc.

I just finished up Generations. I may go back and complete the extra challenges. I gotta say, it was a great game, but way too damn short. Would've been nice if they had 2 lvls per game instead of just 1.
