Title: PSO2 Animation - First Trailer
Post by: Sharky on August 16, 2015, 09:32:47 am
They have gone a weird route with this, it's about people who play PSO2... Showing their real lives and then their in-game lives. The animation looks pretty good compared to some other cheap crap anime I see these days so that's good.

Already looks bad.

What a shame, I was looking forward to it but warning signs was going off when I saw a bunch of school uniforms in the announcement poster.

PSO2 is basically the most self aware game ever, constant collaborations and so on. I think making it about gamers playing the game is kind of interesting... I don't even watch anime but I'll give this a shot for the 'in-game' stuff because, well it's Phantasy Star related.

Honestly, I find basically all anime to be pretty crappy when it comes to story/world/characters...  Anime is mindless viewing.

You've been watching the wrong stuff.

This looks like hot ass.  Like it feels more like a commercial for the game than anything worth watching.  I love how in 2015 we finally get a phantasy star show but it's this.   That's some monkey's paw shit right there.

You need to watch Monster.

Probably one of the best TV shows out there, let alone anime.

(Also come on, Trigun was amazing on all fronts too!)

Looks like Anime. I wasn't expecting much. Looks to be about what i expected. They could of done something cool but they did what is popular in Japan and based it off high school life.

Anime can be solid. Did you ever watch Akira or Ghost in the Shell?

I usually can't stand these "I'm in an MMO" anime, with Sword Arts Online being the only exception because that show had some seriously dark consequences.

These "gameworld" anime shows seem to be popular right now. Sega's probably just riding that wave. It's a shame, probably would have been awesome if they went the serious route. It worked for the Valkyria Chronicles anime. That show was awesome.

or Monster or Perfect Blue or Grave of the Fireflies or...

The list goes on. Tho I wouldn't recommend Akira till the person has read the manga because it makes no sense otherwise.

Yes ive seen most mentioned here... Some of them I even like... But in general I'm just not a fan. Trigun I really like but even that falls into the 'constantly explaining what's happening' cliché form time to time.

Most good TV shows are about talking with other characters!

I think you just want some straight up action like Black Lagoon. Not much explanation, just explosions.

No, not at all. I rarely like action films, at all. Most of my favourite films; Pans Labyrinth, The Darjeeling Limited, The Grand Budapest Hotel, American Beauty to name just a few have very few, if any action. Instead they rely on good writing. But from my experience Anime very seldom has 'good writing.'

My main complaint about Anime writing is that it's often 'telling' when it could be 'showing.' The characters are constantly explicitly stating the scene. It's so bad in some Anime's that I end up skipping large chunks of episodes because I was bored listening to the characters waffling on about what's happening on screen as if I'm a blind guy being walked through every detail.

Example:
The scene; the villain of the piece enters a on mars saloon:
The informed heroin to the newcomer hero: "That's Bulls-Eye Bill, the sharpest shooter on the Martian frontier. His signature move is the 360 no scope and he has killed so many men he's lost count. Do you see those scars on his cheek? He got them killing the sheriff, see the sheriffs badge on his jacket? He pried it from the sheriffs cold dead hands. He's a bad man and he's the law in this town now-- don't cross him!"

Fair enough, I now know all the writers wanted me to know about Bill... but this isn't good storytelling, especially when you can show it. Less is more and I feel far more rewarded when I'm given the raw piece of the puzzle and allowed to piece it together myself.

Here is the scene again:
The saloon doors swing and in walks a scarred figure. Instantly the murmur of the saloon died. The human teeth of his man-skin boots clack across the wooden floor to the bar. Swear rolls down the bar mans bald head.
"The usual," The stranger grunts.
Barman fetches down a bottle and shakily pours the man a drink.
"Th-that'll be five Martian rupees, M-Mister Bullseye," Says the barman.
"It's Sheriff Bill now." Bulls-eye shows off his blood stained sheriffs badge and grabs the bottle out of the barman's hand. "The drink's on the house," He continues and drops his fuck off hand cannon on the bar to prove it.

There... basically the same scene but without need for a single clunky explanation. You know right off he's a bad dude, we know we're on mars from the currency and bills name. We can assume he hasn't acquired the sheriffs status by traditional means by the blood stained badge and he's deffo a dick and a bully. Don't need to know he's a 360-no-scoper yet, he's got a gun and everyone's scared of him, its inferred.

I'm not saying every anime is like this, but its a huge pet peeve of mine and I run into it so often with anime I find myself put off trying to pan the gold from the grit.

Based on what you're saying here, you'd probably get more out of anime movies than anime tv series. I would recommend anything by Satoshi Kon. His movies are dark, surreal, atmospheric and low on exposition. Seems right up your alley. George already mentioned "Perfect Blue" which is one of his movies. Heavily recommend.

Huh... I wasn't expecting them to take that route. I was expecting something like a full-on sci-fi adventure... this seems very similar to Sword Art Online.

For me, at least M.A.O. is on this show, quite enjoy her role as Dreamcast in the Hard Girls series.
