So this is the Japanese Volume 2 localized, so hopefully if it sells well enough SEGA will localize JP's vol 2 as the West's vol 1 and adds a few games.

This is worth picking up a refurbished 3DS XL to me... although I would still prefer to get all of the 3D classics as physical releases, I think this is a decent compromise. And who knows, if this sells well maybe they'll do a Vol. 2.

The Master System bonuses are cool, but the JP vol 1 had better bonuses with OutRun and Space Harrier 3D. I know OutRun 3D is pretty rare nowadays.

I'm sure they will if they see a return for their hard work.

I never thought of refurbished one before...hmm.

I want nothing to do with the people who are bitching about this release. "Another compilation? Pass!", "No Streets of Rage? Pass!", "It's not the new Sonic? Pass!"

Like, look. I know it is a compilation of already released games that are themselves rereleases. But a few facts: these are solid rereleases, they have awesome bonuses and tons of settings to change the way you play. SEGA is taking a chance and releasing a physical title, something many fans wrongfully assumed was never happening again thanks to bullshit video game press that got facts wrong.

If this does not include a 3D Classic you loved, its on the eShop. If you are passing on this because a 3D Classic title isn't on it, you're being an idiot. Passing on this = no sale for SEGA = message to them is people are not interested and they will not release another volume. Simple as that. Support physical releases, you get physical releases. That is how it works.

Man the Sonic fans are salty about this for some reason, I guess having a whole year dedicated to Sonic with multiple titles on the horizon just isn't enough for the little gits.

True, Out Run 3-D is pretty hard to find (and expensive) these days - and at the time it came out, I would have considered it a dream come true kind of title. However, although it's cool that it got the M2 treatment, truthfully the Master System's 2D Out Run title is the better of the two 8-bit versions. Space Harrier 3-D is really cool in its own right.

But as for the arcade Out Run and Space Harrier - not to mention After Burner - those titles' absence in this volume gives me hope that they are planning on a second volume for the West. To me, those are the big 3 classic superscaler titles. In any event, they'll get my ducats for what is hopefully the first volume.

What I like about this release is that it is the first time several classic franchises has seen a physical release in decades. Puyo Puyo 2 is, to my knowledge, the first commercial release in America in which the original name is used. Puyo Pop was the name that appeared in the US when Puyo Puyo Fever and SEGA Superstars were localized. Project Mirai DX had a Puyo Puyo game, but the name was advertised on the box art.

Hell, the main character in Power Drift will be seen on the shelf of every major video game retailer in 2016. That's pretty cool.

I agree with you Barry. Its one of the worst things about the internet. One guy starts shouting some random bs, a bunch of lunatics start repeating and then all of a sudden the snowball effect starts rolling towards bizarre expectations. Its like you cant be careful enough with gamers nowdays. One person with enough backing can change reactions to great news just like that.

Anyway enough of the ranting. Im looking forward to the inevitable EU anouncement.

Wait are the themes included?  Website adds them in like they are.
I have a few of these, but I would gladly upgrade and buy the collection version for these new ones.

EDIT:  Yeah Gematsu is very salty.  I can see why people are disappointed but the reactions aren't deserved for these games.

I can see why some would be disappointed, but like you said this is ridiculous. SEGA said this was announcement and nothing else. No word it was Sonic or any other new or old titles. Those who are complaining need to get a grip.

Edit: Also, haven't SEGA already said Sonic news will be in Feb? If so, they're not going to do this today too.

I don't get it, they specifically mention "fans of classics" and yet somehow people didn't catch the hint.

I knew it would be 3D Power Drift and 3D Puyo Puyo 2, but the fact that it is the physical release of the JP Volume 2 localized was actually a big surprise. I was telling angry commenters on the front page for months that a physical release is never happening, but boy am I glad to be wrong.

Also, the themes are NOT included, they are only being advertised on the 3D Classics site. It's a confusing place to put them, but that's the case. The press release does not mention any bonuses outside of the 3-D Master System titles.

SEGA Europe has always been slow to share their news. It still might get a release outside the Americas.

But now is a good time for fans to start bugging them. ;)

Let's hope. Also, Sonic fans aren't really Sega fans most of the time. They just like that one franchise and if they don't get it its time to whine.

Cuz ya know, there isn't enough Sonic games.

^ Those are from actual comments.
On Gematsu.
But if you asked this question to them, " Do you have a 3DS?", I bet most of them will answer "no".
Some of them are bashing just because SEGA's skipping their favorite console.

Gematsu community is constantly sitting on pins and needles.  So if a company mess up they won't forgive.  If Sega did localize what they wanted instead, they will hold a grudge if the game is digital only and fill comments sections with hyperbolic whining every time the game shows up.

Not quite as bad as Gematsu, but GameFAQs are complaining about the value, that it isn't as good as the Ultimate Genesis Collection (even if most of the games aren't even IN those collections).

I am actually surprised they are misinformed by some things.

There's comments like "This is the definition of rip-off. I hope no one falls for this and buys it."

"Already reeks of laziness, and if Sonic Genesis is anything to go on as to their ability to code a decent emulator, I'm not optimistic."

"A bundle of mediocre games for an unreasonable price."

That last comment actually HAD Sega in the username.

The games are $5.99 on the eShop, and in this collection two are apparently exclusive. So you're looking at $42 for 7 games vs. $29.99 for the compilation. Not bad. Then there are the two Master System bonuses. Not bad.

I think the problem is, people think these are straight emulations. They are not, time and effort went into making each one. It cannot compare to Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.

Yeah, people should read the interviews with M2 that Sega has been translating and posting on their blogs... (that is, if they are actually interested and aren't just a bunch of trolls in their sad little forum echo chambers.) The developers describe all kinds of interesting technical challenges they encountered for making each title 3D. Each interview is 10 pages or more, so they really cover a lot of fascinating information. In some cases they discovered hidden/unused parts of the original games, such as an alternate themesong in After Burner. And furthermore, they developed new challenge modes - Grantanoffs as they came to be called - that introduce new gameplay mechanics. I would sum it all up by saying M2 put their heart and soul into these versions of the games.

This is a nice collection, I think they should have added 3 more titles to make it a even 10. Both digital and physical have their drawback. Physical being your locked into getting titles pre-picked by Sega and not the ones you would want otherwise.

But I want that box in my collection, 30 is a small price to pay for that.

Here's how I look at it. I've been wishing for a long time that Sega would make more of an effort to do re-releases of games from other platforms besides just the Genesis. The Sega Genesis is full of classics that deserve to be enjoyed by generations to come without a doubt, but Sega should also shine the spotlight on games from their other systems, including arcades, a little more often. This is just another step in the right direction, especially since all the arcade games included have never gotten a physical re-release in NA ever until now, not even as a bonus in another game like Shenmue or Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. On top of that, the extras mean the games are in better condition than ever, even if they're limited by being on a handheld platform, but hey, it's better than putting these games on mobile platforms and making you deal with touch control.

I know there's always people who will be upset with anyone over anything they do, good or bad, but for the rest of us, this is a great deal. I've always been a big fan of Sega's 3D Classics and they're the first 3DS games I recommend to anyone. The extra exposure in stores at a budget price can only do right by them and I'll absolutely buy this singing all the way to the store and back.

Well Sega Japan always tried the variety, with the Sega Ages had games on different arcade boards and Saturn games.  I think Sega West keeps asking for the same Genesis games over and over.

I wonder if we will see a 3rd collection.
It would look like this:
1.  Sonic 2
2.  Streets of Rage 2
3.  Gunstar Heroes
4.  Super Hang-On
5.  After Burner II

Then there's 3D Master System titles like Zaxxon 3D and Blade Eagle.  There's rumored titles at one point like Shining Force and M.U.S.H.A. that can be the collection exclusives again.

I think that's what Nintendo does, we rarely get good LE's from other companies all that much *Looks at Koei Tecmo*

I want the game to be honest, and hope it comes to Europe.
