While the game’s technical and fundamental shortcomings hold it back, what is there makes it easy to just play a session and gives plenty of reasons to come back and find more surprises.
It’s the purest return to form ToeJam and Earl fans have been asking for and retains the same charm as the original.

Years ago during an email exchange with series co-creator Greg Johnson, he told me that they’d actually planned to have many more cutscenes, even going as far as to record the dialogue with the voice talent, but that these were cut when it became clear that they wouldn’t be finished on time for the game’s release.
Reviews were not kind and sales were disappointing despite a solid marketing push from SEGA and the iconic nature of its characters.

Mighty Fight Federation launches February 25 for PS5, PS4, and PC worldwide; Switch in Europe

Mighty Fight Federation will exit Early Access and launch for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam worldwide, as well as Switch in Europe on February 25, publisher Forthright Entertainment and developer Komi Games announced.

I used to play Toejam & Earl on Genesis when I was a kid, then I forgot what the game was like and just remembered the title. I bought a Genesis again sometime around 2012 and was disappointed in the graphics of Toejam & Earl compared to games like Mortal Kombat and Jurassic Park. The only thing I did enjoy from it was the soundtrack, but Earthworm Jim was just as good as far as game music goes.

Yeah, graphically Toejam & Earl isn't interesting.
The charm is in the gameplay, atmosphere, and funky music.

At the end of the day, over 500 albums were removed, including Sonic, OutRun, and others.
Unfortunately, this even included fan made compilation albums for games that have no commercial releases, which, quite frankly, makes absolutely no sense.

This news might be disappointing for SEGA fans who care about the preservation of the companies’ rich history of video games ranging from arcade to consoles, including myself and fellow SEGAbits writers. On November 26th, 2024, Sega added Toejam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron, Vectorman and Mercs to Sega Genesis – Nintendo Switch Online. Japan, despite only seeing Mercs release there originally, gets the same three games at the same time.

As Johnson described, he and co-creator Mark Voorsanger are "gratefully on the sidelines" on the project and are more than happy to let Story Kitchen and Unanimous use their own expertise and run with it. Naturally there are plenty of IPs for the company to choose from, but it seems like the characters outside of SEGA’s own internal back catalogue will reserved for paid Season Pass holders.

Earlier this month series creator Greg Johnson engaged in a Reddit Ask Me Anything to celebrate the beginning of the Kickstarter campaign for his new game, Dancing With Ghosts. Inevitably, the conversation turned to ToeJam & Earl, with one participant asking for more details about a potential new game.
Subtle hints, of course, weren’t enough to sate the hunger of fans of this rapping, hotdog-eating, chain-wearing pair, but Johnson was happy to oblige (to a certain extent). He noted:
"I can say that the new game is in the planning stage. We intend to make it happen."
Of course, optimism can be difficult to come by in the gaming industry at times, but ...

In a Reddit AMA, ToeJam & Earl co-creator Greg Johnson shared a progress update on the movie adaptation that was announced a few years back.
It seems things have stalled a bit in terms of movement, but the good news is that the film isn’t dead.
“I’m not 100% sure [if it will be live action or animated] as it’s out of my control but I expect it will probably be animated. I’ve read the script and really it could be either all animated, or it could be a mix like Sonic, as it’s primarily on Earth. I’m as curious as you are as to what they will do. Right now they are still looking for a director so things are a bit stalled out. Hopefully that train will start moving again soon. The guys are Story Kitchen are great.”
