Title: Modern Games that carry the Dreamcast Spirit
Post by: Tad on September 28, 2016, 11:39:25 am
While browsing the neogaf forum, I discovered this topic and thought it would be fun to see what games you think carry the DC's spirit in feel, tone or style?

Just a few I've seen:

Vanqish
Yakuza
Sunset Overdrive
Monster Hunter
Tank Tank Tank
Starfox Zero - due to its arcade roots.
Heart and Slash
Bayonetta
W101
Hover - Jet Set Radio
Sky Rouge - Afterburner
LastFight - Power Stone
Splatoon
Recore
Redout

I think one to consider is Deadly Premonition. It's a very experimental like a lot of Dreamcast games were. I'm tempted to say Rocket League too.

Another vote for Sunset Overdrive.
Virtua Fighter 5 (in ways 3tb never could).
Doom (in line with Q3A and UT)

well dreamcast is pretty much sega in my mind.

new genres, defying genres. like nagoshi said: "young upstart titles that seem crazy but make sense when they come form". that is pretty much sega.

Rez Infinite.
An actual Dreamcast game turns out to be the most compelling VR software set for release.

The Forza Horizon series is what I imagine an Outrun 3 to be.

Can't remember the name, but wasn't there another racing game that was successful on the DC that sort of was the foundations of Forza?

Update: found it. It was the studio bizarre creations.

It's a long story.
Bizarre Creations developed Metropolis Street Racer (one of the best racers on the DC) and was working on a sequel. With the end of the DC development shifted to the Xbox and they made the Project Gotham Racing series. As the studio folded in 2011, much of the staff joined Playground Games, which already included some ex-Criterion Games employees.
The result was Forza Horizon.

Funny how such a modern game can be traced back to the Dreamcast.

Ah, that was it. Cheers. Yeah, it's funny how it's come back round on itself.

The Forza Horizon series is what I imagine an Outrun 3 to be.

Outrun3 is in fact my customized license plate in Horizon 3! It's not too far off from my ideal for a real Outrun 3. The only thing is, I'd design it so every intersection is a smoothly flowing curve rather than realistic city streets with T-intersections.

So you could flow through the entire map.. That's bloody brilliant, yes.
