God I wish Sega would start having conferences at E3 again... It’s conferences that build the brand recognition, as well as show off the games. I feel every E3 Sega drags their knuckles and limps around releasing a few bits of game play here and there relying on people at the event to show off their games for them via shaky cam videos on youtube.
If Konami can do it, If Ubisoft and Capcom can do it... Sega sure as hell can do it. It isn't as if they haven't got anything to show.
If Sega had gone up on stage and shown off their current E3 line up I'm SURE it would have gone down very well. Vanquish, Sonic Colours, Shogun 2, Phantasy Star Portable 2, Yakuza 4, Valkryia Chronicles 2, Sonic 4 etc... Could have been good for Segas pretty poor current reputation.
Sure conferences cost money but the ends justify the means.
I'm tired of Sega being content with just existing, limping along like a lame duck publisher, it's depressing.
-
Agreed. This was their strongest third party year in a LONG time and it called for a big show. They definitely would have outdone UbiSoft.
-
Their biggest game (well I think it should be their biggest game) leaked all over the internet before release. They keep leaking everything. How can they surprise anyone?
I'd like to see a Sega conference too but how can they manage something exciting when all they got at this years conferences was their logo on Nintendo's keynote? They can't even get the hardware makers to back their stuff. The Sonic logo would have gone very well with the 3DS annoucements... Even Saints Row was there. I don't think Yakuza 4 was on the damn Sony montages either.
-
Well Gamespot is having a live SEGA booth tour today. And tomorrow they're gonna go in-depth on Sonic 4 and Valkyria Chronicles 2.
http://http://e3.gamespot.com/e3-live-schedule/#live_schedule
So that's something, right?
-
It would be nice to see Sega have E3 conferences again, but at least their TGS conferences are really good.
-
at least their TGS conferences are really good.
Not when Nagoshi comes on stage for 2 hours demonstrating RGG5 with its reused assists and new hostess clubs.
As much as I liked the Yakuza series, I'm tired of it now, I really really hope TGS this year will have some thing new...
-

I don't even think they need to surpise anyone, I mean it would be good but it isnt needed. I just think Sega needs to make a big deal out of their games they have a great line up this E3 and they are doing very little to promote them. They should be boasting about it, showing it off...
Have some fat pie faced tool like Reggie standing on a stage saying every sentance in short five word bursts to try and drum up some fake hype that seems to work...
That kind of shit.

Well yeah but that isnt Sega, they are simply waiting for Gamespot to do their dirty work.

Nintendo and especially Sony had a lot of filler scenes. I think SEGA should have payed them some money to at least mention them at least. Microsoft seemed a bit embarrassed by Sonic Free Riders, and I can understand why, lol.

Really? because everything else on Kenect was pretty much very casual wii style rubbish, glorified tech demos and fitness crap.
Sonic Riders seems like the only launch game that is actually a game.

I am not sure how you can say it looks to be the only 'real game' when we have not seen half of it. I would say Dance Central already seems like a billion times better and have more to it than Sonic Free Riders, and I am not even interested in the music genre. Kinect Joy Ride probably has similar content as well, [spoiler:35yxtuoe]but I guess you hate it because it is not by SUMO Digital.[/spoiler:35yxtuoe] :P
-
Its hard really, especially since all 3 conferences really did suck. Just that one actually showed exciting stuff. Imagine the presser on SEGA.
Though if I was them. I would make it short and sweet. Look at Ubisoft. Not how to do it.
-
Sega booth tour starts in a few minutes!
-
The guy is talking about Vanquish. What did I miss?
-
Gah, it's shit. The guy is blowing through the booth saying "whats this? Yakuza 4? I don't remember 1,2 or 3.Moving on!" then he runs right past about 3 game demos only to pause at the booth babes, not mentioning the game they represent of course.
You'd get more news via SEGAbits and random YouTube videos than Gamespot's "tour".
-
Quotes from the host:
"Yakuza 4?? I don't remember Yakuza 1, 2, or 3, but whatever."
"Crazy Taxi? Didn't that game come out like 18 years ago? Moving on."
"Where's all the good stuff?!"
"Sonic Colors is like the 89th Sonic release. As long as people keep buying them, they'll keep making them."
-
That was pathetic. I'm really surprised they actually pulled that shit. It was neither informative or entertaining.

The Gamespot host seriously said that? That's awful. What a jerk.
Probably just another guy who thinks it's "cool" to hate on Sega.
-
No loss there then. It's okay. Who were those two girls next to that Sonic statue by the end of the "tour"? What were they promoting. They were hot.
-
wow genuine grade A asshole, he gets paid for this shit? Touting his own ignorance of games.
-
He was too busy trying to get to the EA both to check out the next Need for Speed. OMG DUDE ANOTHER GREAT GAME?! ITS BEEN AWHILE OMG!
-
Conferences notwithstanding, where the fuck is the news from Sega? All we're seeing is the same stuff we've known about for ages, don't they have ONE surprise or announcement to give us? We didn't know about Sonic Free Riders, but I would have hoped they would have something more than a sequel to some rubbish racing game that nobody liked for a console that looks like even less people will like.
*Sigh*
Having said that, I don't know if they really NEED a conference, but if freakin' Konami can do one, then surely Sega can. It wouldn't need to be a big flashy extravaganza, just have the games and some new trailers/live play or something.
-
It wouldn't need to be a big flashy extravaganza, just have the games and some new trailers/live play or something.
They are doing that. It's called a booth.
-

That brings me to my first point of nothing new and surprising though. It's just more vanquish, Yakuza, Sonic and the like that we've already seen.
-
Speaking of which, where is Aliens: Colonial Marines?
Gamespot sorta dropped the ball on this.
-
I am not quite sure why SEGA was hell bent on letting the world know of everything they could have quietly announced at E3 with much surprise such as Yakuza 4, Sonic Colours, Dreamcast games coming to XBLA/PSN, first gameplay footage of Vanquish etc.
There is quite a lot of things SEGA could have and probably should have held back for this E3, but decided to announce it on their blogs instead.
-
The most expectations I had was for DC games in PSN/XBLA. But meh..
-
The most expectations I had was for DC games in PSN/XBLA. But meh..
See what I mean, they could have even come up with something for that. Where is the trailer for 'Sega bringing back the legend' or whatever and showing a montage of Dreamcast games they plan to bring to XBLA? Could have had Crazy Taxi, SA, JSR and anything else they want with some funky music and nice visual effects.

Yeah! You're right! Thanks man!
Let's hope tomorrow Sega gives us something! There's still one day left right?
-
I will say though compared to previous shows, this E3 hasn't been upto scratch.
-

Gamespot sorta dropped the ball on this.
Yeah, I thought Colonial Marines was going to be at E3. I eagerly await any news about it.
-
This E3 blows, and especially Sega. NOTHING new from them. What a waste. I was hoping for SOMETHING. Lame.

I hope to see more of Sonic Free Riders in action, if done right it could be a lot of fun.
Anyways, from the videos I've seen it looks like Sega had an awesome booth. I wish I could have been there to check out all the fabulous titles. 8-)
-
People say that Sega's booth is very good. Vanquish is very popular.
Problem is that unless you're there you really don't get anything. Sega should at least put some video montages online or something.

Yeah I was really hoping for some professionally done trailers and gameplay footage from Sega.
-
This E3 blows, and especially Sega. NOTHING new from them. What a waste. I was hoping for SOMETHING. Lame.
Yes its one of the worst E3 I can ever remember . SEGA to be fair had a nice safe and rock solid showing . But the trouble is its never going to be headline news or a conference maker until some of the old SEGA magic sparks back into action.
You know until SEGA make a Multi Platform SOA II with the Canvan engine , a Shenmue III or Ueda-san makes his next SEGA game , a eye popping PSU full on NextGen sequel . SEGA really aren't going to hit the headlines . Stuff like that is what really needed to get people excited and talking about SEGA again .
What the press want to see, is really what the gaming public and the SEGA fans want to see, and that SEGA Japan making some Big games for the next generation . Sadly that isn't SAMMY Current plan.
-
Alpha Protocol gave us more trailers than this years E3 has! Crazy...
...Taxi.
-
It's all about Sega DNA guys.
-
More like SEGA NDA.
-
I just watched the video of Gamespot booth's tour. The guy was an unprofessional douche.
It's funny the talk about keeping the "Average Joe" public out of E3, but this honestly was embarrassing and even oogles the booth girls at one point.
From an outsiders perspective, it's hard to take Sega seriously when they get treated this poorly by major gaming news media outlets.
-
Indeed...
It's sad to see Sega is losing 'territory' to publishers like Ubisoft and Konami...
-
Yea, Ubisoft's new breathing simulator is going to sell like teh shit! :D
-
E3 pretty much established what a lot of people in the industry have been worried about for a while.
The endgame (Pun intended) is amongst us, for the game industry, who will go bust and who will survive, it is only a matter of time.

He really was a big jerk. He completely skipped all the PSP games, Shogun 2, and had no idea what he was talking about when he was looking at the other games. He seemed the most interested in Vanquish but that is probably because it's a shooter.
I hope Gamespot never hires this guy again.
-
I thought it was common sense by now that Gamespot is biased against Sega. It has been since like 2004.
-

I made Aki say that because it's true. This industry is stale and sickens me to my stomach.

Can we just stop this everyone hates SEGA everyone is against them . Its really hard to get people excited over PSP game, given the format is half dead on its feet over in the West (thanks to Piracy) . PC well no many get excited over PC games these days , thanks to the power needed to run the latest games , and gain issue with Piracy .
No-one is talking about SEGA because their showing is as dull as dishwater , The world class leading Tech , the unmatched Artistry and Vision gone. SEGA Japan needs to get people talking about it for the best reasons .
A Multi Platform Val II using the Canvas Tech would have got the fans talking, a A multi Platform Shenmue III would have gotten the whole of the E3 and the Internet going mad , PSO next gen would have got people talking maybe even a REZ II might have spared interest. We just got none of that , That's the issue here , it how poor, how lame, how dull SEGA Japan really are at the moment.
I'm getting so very sick of saying next E3 will be different , next Tokyo game show is when you see the BIG stuff . Its just not happing, No sign of Ueda_san game , no hope bar some hopes of Sonic Team back on track or the ever reliable AM#2
I Hate Sammy with a passion, they've all but killed SEGA.
-
Can't Sega just break up with Sammy or it doesn't work that way?

I made Aki say this because from what I've seen it's true. The industry is in a downwards spiral and this will continue to occur and the money will continue to be lost.

Sega Japan really needs to release some big games. Valkyria Chronicles (original) was a great start... but then it kind of trailed off again. I mean AAA multiplatform HD games... The Yakuza games while I really enjoy them every time. I want something NEW.
I agree with TA, a new Skies of Arcadia on the Canvas engine would be the most fantastic thing I can think of... Or the next big PSO or Shenmue... or Jet Set Radio... etc... the games you know everyone is asking for.
-
I think the Dreamcast digital releases could very well be setting the stage for those types of new games. It seems to have worked quite well so far for Virtual On.
-
I think also there must be had some issues with the new announcements, since we know that Nagoshi is working, at least, in 2 new IPs for the West. There is also a new Phantasy Star game, a new Sawada game and some more that Sega has not officially announced yet.
Probably Sega had no time to announce them at this E3. Sega is now giving more time to developers makes their games, and this is good.
I just hate how Sega make their announcements, without any hype. They always announce new titles from nowhere; never at these big events...
-
Who needs conferences when you got Dreamcast t-shirts?
From UK:R
Is September when Sega will start pouring out DC games on PSN/XBLA?

I consider it a hidden blessing:

I think SEGA just needs to make more good partnerships like with Platinum Games. Remember the excitement on gaming sites when MADWORLD and Bayonetta were announced? Everyone was talking so positively about SEGA. It was something I hadn't seen in years.
They could get companies like Platinum Games to make games based on old SEGA franchises. Like how Team Ninja is doing Metroid Other M.
Because right now, it seems that the internal teams don't have as much freedom anymore.
-
There are rumors about Sega using Platinum to make new games based on old Sega IPs.
But, wait, they have not yet finished their first deal, and people wants more :P One game takes years to become finished. Especially these ones with high budget.
We have just to wait. That's all OK with Sega. We have also AAA(tri-Ace). I'm sure they are doing something new right now.
-
I remember I was saying a while back that Sega should make a big huge deal out of ressurrecting an old IP like Skies or JSR. Most people just said 'lol no they were flops u retord' but I think that if they pulled it out at E3/TGS and made a big huge trailer, got the word out to EVERYONE on the internet, the hype machine would take off.
It would be better than just having some shaky cam footage of IGN guys playing Yakuza 4 at least, like seriously there wasn't even an english trailer what the fucking hell Sega?
-
All great points, but the games ARE coming out, and they are great.
So they aren't making a big deal about it.. So what.
-
All great points, but the games ARE coming out, and they are great.
So they aren't making a big deal about it.. So what.
Yeah why should Sega try to promote their stuff, so what.
I know what you mean, but I'm just miffed that the fans didn't really get anything unless they were there, and non-fans are gonna think 'lol sega' because they'll have to resort to shaky cam footage of a guy saying 'lol wat dis yakoozer'. It's not that hard to put together a nice trailer or and whack it on Youtube as an 'E3 2010' trailer.
-

That is true. But have you thought that you have been getting a stream of announcements over time while other companies fans have to wait until E3 to get it all at once?
You don't get the same hype, but overall you get more stuff on the games you like.
At least that how I feel. But of course I would love to see some trailers and gameplay compilations and stuff get released! It's sad Sega didn't make them, but we are getting great games so it's hard for me to get as "mad" (not really that word..) at them..
-
Can't Sega just break up with Sammy or it doesn't work that way?
Sega can't break up with Sammy, since Sammy is their owner.
However, Sammy was near to break up with Sega this year, if they have not made profits on CS. And, sadly(?), they have made profits, so...
And now there are rumors in Japan about Sega and Sony merge. Holy shit! XD
-

One new IP for the west, which happens to be a shooter  , and tells the story what its like to be Human . Great shame its just a load of bullshit on paper and no game . Nahoshi-san other game , well that been in development since before Kenzan and no-one seen it, not even his Team
You best get used to the nagoshi-san bullshit, because that's all it is .
But, wait, they have not yet finished their first deal, and people wants more One game takes years to become finished. Especially these ones with high budget.

Yeah Great, Storm , SEGA pay Platinum to take all the risk with SEGA money and for thier Teams ti get all the hype and learn how to make action games and what works inthe West . Meanwhile SEGA own teams are put to use on Sonic for Natal . That's great and sets up SEGA teams ready for the Future
Tri-Ace ? Yes again what a great way for SEGA to spend cash, never mind SEGA has some of the best RPG teams in the business, That could be put to use on Next Gen sequels to Saga, Skies , Val, PS ECT . No lets pay other teams to make Next Gen multi Platform RPG's.
This is such a sure way , not to show confidence in your own Teams (sorry you're rubbish we pay for outside teams instead) and Train up your Line to what its like to make Next Gen games . Yep I've got to say SEGA Japan are looking good for the future

The Platinum guys have a track record making games that actually make sales to contemporary western audiences.

More like a when will you get it post.
I should know better that if I don't state something specifically you are going to spin it into some silly. . I'm referring to Mikami and Kobayashi, specifically, and how a single RE or DMC title outsold all those Sega RPG's combined you want Sega to invest in sequels for.
How do you (or don't you?) rationalize Sega management justifying spending $10-20 million developing and $5 to $10 million marketing internally developed sequels to Skies, Val, Saga when the original games didn't sell?
Oh, it's all the fault of the evil ceo, right?

DMC and RE are Capcom IP. Now SEGA bought into the Clover group , and they were more famous for working on Okami and the likes of God Hand Viewtiful. I mean Yoshiki Okamoto record at Capcom was almost 2nd to none, not that's really helps his Gamers Republic Team at the mo .
Action games, Gun games sell in the west . That's what SEGA Japan needs to make, but that isn't the SEGA way now is it ?.
How do you (or don't you?) rationalize Sega management justifying spending $10-20 million developing and $5 to $10 million marketing internally developed sequels to Skies, Val, Saga when the original games didn't sell
Saga ? I wouldn't really bother, not yet . Skies II or a Val III?. Making it Multi Platform and use the Canvas Tech . You get a lot hype , a lot of press coverage and maybe some decent sales .The huge trouble for games like Skies was that they came out on the DC , we all know it would have sold way better on the PS2
Really though A Shenmue III would be the better option . The west likes that style of RPG , the hype for the game is tremendous . Who knows a Multi Platform Shenmue could just about work, either that or a full on proper next sequel to PSO
Still, all great games.
The videogame market moves in mysterious ways.
I thought Okami was a boring pants fest myself, But I get the point
One could say just the same about the likes of Saga, Orta, JSRF though
-
I'm going to try and use 'pants-fest' more often in conversation. Well played TA.
