Sega has said that they are a software company and will not be getting back into hardware anytime soon, despite rumours suggesting otherwise.
It was rumoured during the week that Sega may be looking to return to the hardware scene after signing a deal with a UK-based 3D hardware manufacturer.
However, Sega West president Mike Hayes laughed off the suggestions, telling CVG:
“Absolutely not. We’re a software company. We certainly won’t be getting back into hardware, that’s for sure.”
That seems to have it stamped on the head, then.

I do not think anyone here believed those rumors.
-
Yeah neither did I. Just the same rumours doing the rounds.

TAKE THAT ZACH MORRIS
-
You would think that after 10 years of Sega saying "no" to any rumors or speculation about a Sega console, you'd think they would get the message.
-
They'd just lose money releasing a new hardware... I mean, sure Sega has many 'orphans' but the fan base is just not enough to make sure they'd profit.
Also, I heard that, 'till last year, both Sony and Microsoft were losing money for each X360/PS3 sold, and, since this year they're not losing money on them anymore...
Sega lost a lot of money for each Dreamcats sold back in 2000, and we all know what happened... their finance/capital is not as big as Sony's and Microsoft's...
-
The fanbase is not enough for anyone except Nintendo. The industry is in a dire position, several publishers losing billions of dollars, even publishers who had relatively safe business models will not go through this stretch comfortably, there were remarks that the Japanese industry was falling apart at their Tokyo Game Show last year, the signs of the current E3 shows so are American and European developers and publishers too.
So no, is it in anyway possible, for SEGA to make a new console.
-
Unless they make a 'cheap' console... Nintendo didn't lose any money for each Wii sold, in fact, I believe they gained money since it's release...
A 'portable Dreamcast' could be possible... They just need to find the right partners for that :P
-
I've already said numerous times that I think Sega could eventually launch a Dreamcast remake. It could read DC disc games and have an online store digitally distributing games from Sega's old consoles. Maybe a section for indie developers to put games in there. Like these releases the DC sometimes still gets.. Last Bullet and such.
Simply that. And online multiplayer. Like relaunch the DreamArena.
It could be really cheap. Like 50 bucks cheap, and then have a small fee for online or something. To maintain the servers.
It didn't have to have a big number of consoles sold.. Just catering for the fans and curious ones.
But this is one of those things that is simple in concept but it would cost a lot to make..

@crackdude: your idea is reasonable/plausible

Or they can just cheaply release their older games on new hardware on the cheap and bloat their releases every year. They could easily blow the competition away with their vivid history alone.
-
I don't see it happening anytime in the near future, but if somehow Sega was able to come back to the hardware market I would be one of the first to buy a console from them.
-
I would only buy a new SEGA system if it had Pokemon on it

I don't see much chance of that happening. ^^"
