Back in the days before we could check everything on the internet, and when games still had secrets because of it, I'm sure we'd all been tricked or fell for some false rumours about our favourite games. There was always someone who's dad bought them a game from America that you never heard or, or who's dad worked for Sega and knew some secret cheat/level that you believed.
I think it's fun to look back at these and laugh at how gullible we were for believing them:
Bullet Man: The Game
This is from a friend in primary school who told me he was rich and had every Mega Drive game ever. When I asked him what his favourite game was, he said it was "Bullet Man".
Apparrantly it was a game about a man made entirely out of bullets and you had to shoot your way through several levels. His nose would morph into a giant gun (I assume the gun was also made of bullets) and he would shoot rockets from it.
I believed him as well, I think he told me that I wouldn't have heard of it before because it was only out in America or Japan. Which leads me to my next game...
Street Fighter Vs Mortal Kombat
Same friend as Bullet Man, he told me about this game that was only out in America or Japan or something, but he somehow imported.
I don't remember much about this except that it apparantly had Kintaro from MK2, who knew how to roll, but was a shit character regardless.
Dick Tracy's Oyster Girl
Different friend, who was also a purveyor of bullshit video game rumours. I was talking about how hard Dick Tracy on Mega Drive was (try that game out sometime, I still can't finish that with Save States!) and that I couldn't beat Lips Manlis. He told me that he had finished the game once, and continually confused Lips Manlis with some character who I never heard of called 'The Oyster Girl'.
Virtua Cop of the Dead
Same friend who told me about the curious 'Oyster Girl' boss also told me he was lucky enough to play Virtua Cop 3 (This was while I had a saturn and Virtua Cop 2 was still new). He told me all about how it's set in a haunted house and you need to kill zombies. I asked if he meant The House of the Dead or CarnEVIL or something like that, but he swore blind it was a location-test for Virtua Cop 3. By this time I was savvy enough to realise that Sega Saturn Magazine would surely have this covered if true.
"Why haven't I read about this in any magazines?"
"When you get to the door, if they see you are from the press or carrying a pen and paper, you aren't allowed to play, so the press hasn't heard about it yet!"
"Riiiiiight...."
Super Mario Bros' Secret Jungle Level!
This was my own trick I used on a friend at their house.
We were playing SMB 2 Player on his NES, and since it was his game he was much better than me. The way it used to work on SMB was one player would play until he died, and only then would player 2 get to have a go. I was waiting ages for him to die so I could have a play and got bored.
I told him if he jumps down into some bottomless pit, that it goes to a secret Jungle Level. He believed me and jumped to his death. He was pissed off but gave me the controller to have my turn.
The first bottomless pit I came across, he said to me
"HEY IF YOU JUMP DOWN THERE YOU GET A SECRET LEVEL"
"How dumb do you think I am?"
Anyone else have any pre-internet Video Game rumours that they fell for or just found really funny looking back at them?

Mortal Kombat will make your head explode.
I was always a Street Fighter II nut, ever since I played the game as a tiny child in the arcade. But when my cousin told me it was 'shit' compared to this new game called Mortal Kombat. He said its like 'Street Fighter' but gory as fuck. As a kid, interest in the game spiked and I had to get it. He told me that if you played the game and where not ready, that it would make your head explode do to its 'REALISTIC' graphics and sound. I bought the game, after my dad's friend owed him money and like a typical Mexican, he 'refused' the money (it was more of a 'gift'), his friend gave me the money. So when I bought it, I refused to play it first, I let my cousins play it cuz I literally thought my head would explode.
Donkey Kong Country vs. Sonic the Hedgehog game
My friend told me that the reason Sonic's shoe was on Donkey Kong Country, was because it was a hint for a game that is coming out soon called Donkey Kong Country vs. Sonic the Hedgehog...

You don't have to buy a PS2
Curiously, about 4 or 5 of my friends swore this was true and that they had seen it in action (which is bullshit of course): If you put your PSX in a vertical position it will read PS2 discs and play them at a lower resolution. This was a heavily popular rumor at the time. I have no idea where it came from.
They are already making the PS7
This is another rumor that spread around the time of the PS2's launch. The PS7 would be of a pinkish-red color (kinda like a beef) and it would plug right into your belly button so that the characters on the screen would do the exact same motions as you do (kinda like Kinect with cords). It "is supposed" to release between 2010 and 2015.
Actually, this rumor came from the misinterpretation of some satirical comments made by the Official Playstation Magazine here in Portugal. Kids took stuff waaay seriously back in these days.
The ultimate powerful white Sega Saturn
This was actually just a big mess up. This was spreading at a time when the Dreamcast had launched in Japan only. So as there is only Black Saturn here, when some guys saw the white Dreamcast they confused it with the white japanese Saturn. By talking about how awesome it was, they spread the rumor that the white Saturn was superior. (in fact, some of my friends still are convinced TODAY that the white Saturn has better graphical capabilities over the regular one).
all Sega Saturn games are coming to the PSX
This was a rumor started by the Official Playstation Magazine!
I've long lost the issues, but I have the number 100 and it still has some guy asking in the mail section if the "news" they announced before is still going to happen. I remember some friends of mine talking about how they were asking for a PSX because it could run all games from both consoles. (My dad got me a PSX so I remember being fucking excited with this. Fucking OPM.)
Sega Saturn plays Megadrive games
because of the port in the back. Common rumor.
Still, this lead to the rumor that there was a cartridge version of NiGHTS which supposedly played on the MegaDrive as well. wtf.
EDIT: Oh yeah! There was a Mortal Kombat one as well!
The game was so hardcore that if you were underage and played it, you would die in your sleep as death would descend to you and take you to Mortal Kombat world to die.
As a 6 year old this scared the shit out of me. Nice sleepless night I had that day.
-
^I love the PS7 rumour! And I also remember that rumour that Saturn plays MegaDrive games. In fact, I think the people at stores used to even say that when you asked about it.
And it seems Mortal Kombat is a really strong topic for rumours back in the day. Pretty interesting that we've heard two so far that state the game could legit kill you. Sounds a bit like the Urban Legend of Polybius (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polybius_(game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polybius_(game)))

Mortal Kombat
When i was a kid my friends talked about this super move in the next MK game called Animality instead of Fatality where all the characters turn in to some animal and killed the enemy in a very splatter way  i searched the game for years
oh, forgot to say that this was before MK3 lol

Do you mean these?

yes, just edited my post, the rumor was coming out before MK3 and i did not know about it after some year it was released, so i really searched it for some year lol
-
I remember being accused of 'bullshit' in Mortal Kombat. I got to fight Reptile in the bottom of the spike stage (bridge) all my friends and cousins said I lied about it. Before the wonders of Wiki!

Ah, didn't see the edit! But that actually reminds me of ANOTHER Mortal Kombat rumour:
Fergality
The excellent Sega Megazone magazine printed in their cheat section that Raiden in MK2 could do a finisher where he transformed into a Midget with a big head and it was called a 'Fergality' I remember trying the move they posted a lot of times and figured I just was rubbish at the game. Years later I looked it up and never found any info on it, and realised it must have been a joke.
Wait a minute... It's actually true, WTF!

It would have been even weirder if you faught Ermac. I remember even the magazines didn't know if it was real or a rumour.
-
I had the impression mashing the start button would do something to accelerate the loading process. This was when the first CD consoles were released, I saw people doing it in shops.
Then I learned English.
-
I used to believe that Sonic was short, round, and had black eyes, but luckily SEGA was there to correct me! (http://http://forums.sega.com/images/icons/icon7.gif)
-
Pokemon
Mashing B+up would turn any Pokeball into a master ball. Some people still say it works, but I was never able to do it.. I call bullshit..
Also, there was another rumor at my school about Sega, which in fact I started. I got this letter from Sega that showed the newest Megadrive and Saturn games. I also showed a portable gaming machine, kinda like a cross between a VMU and those old Tetris games. I told a few friends and so it started the rumor of a new Sega portable.
In fact, I never saw it afterwards.. I need to scan it to show it to you guys.
-
I think I still have that little Tetris thing.
-
I think I still have that little Tetris thing.
Is it from Sega? White with blue buttons?
-
No brand that I can remember of. Definitely not Sega though. It was transparent and I think it had red buttons. Remind me next Saturday and I'll look for it.
-
Pokemon
Mashing B+up would turn any Pokeball into a master ball. Some people still say it works, but I was never able to do it.. I call bullshit..
I remember another one: Mew.
Jesus, whoever started the rumor where you have to get all eight badges, like, 50,000 times, use SWIM, then swallow the game and dump the game back in the system on the fifth full moon of the year to make Mew appear... was a jerk.
But, damn, half my friends tried that and the many different variations. If they would have just waited a while till they could d/l him...
-
Actually there was an easy way. I think it was something like this:
You know that water passage into Pallet Town? If you go down on it you will see some tall grass on the right, but you can't get there. You have to come all the way from the Islands and somehow you would end up in there. Just hit a combination on the d-pad and mew would appear. I never tried this I don't remember why, I think it only worked in R/B and I had Y. But it was in some cheat guides at the time. I trust it worked..

Someone else mentioned this on the official SEGA forums.
Now I really do want to know if this is true or not. It seems to be a widespread rumored strategy.
-
@carckdude LIES! I wasted hours of my life trying for that. This is what happens when you walk in the grass http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNwE68tLdPI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNwE68tLdPI) not this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7FInFSf ... re=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7FInFSfdwk&feature=related)
Sonic the hegehog 2
My uncle told me about on act 1 of hilltop zone in the first cave all the way to the left where there is a wall tunnel that you cant go into. That one time he made it in there by flipping a switch in the wall tunnel all the way to the right on the ceiling. And in the tunnel on the left it took him to this really really hard special level. I asked him to show me it but he said he wouldnt because its really scary too and he didnt want to get in trouble with my grandma for showing me. So for years I tried getting in that shitty tunnel until I realized I was an idiot.
Sonic & Knuckles
The same uncle told me that in flying battery zone act 2 when you go down that...um..well spiraly thing (at 2:37 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoLTTrJCRB0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoLTTrJCRB0)) that if you made it back to the top there was a american flag there. I said I didnt believe him and wanted to prove him wrong but I obviously did believe since I kept trying to do it. That literally dosent make ANY sence, why would there be a flag there, an american flag of all things.
-
@ribbitking17
But the way I read it it didn't involve any glitch... curious. I did not know of this glitch =P
And that's a mean uncle lol
My uncle once opened up this really weird menu in Sonic 1 or 2.. Kinda like the character choosing screen of Sonic 2, but he accessed it during gameplay! I saw it with my own 6 year old eyes! He told me that it was to save the game, but I know that's bullshit. Still, does anyone know what it does or how to access it? Or are my childhood memories screwed up? lol
-
Closest thing I can think of is that might have been the debug mode (Which was an awesome cheat). Apart from that, I don't know. Did he have a hacked ROM or something maybe?
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Cheat: Debug Mode
To enter Debug Mode, play these sounds from the level select screen: 1, 9, 9, 2, 1, 1, 2, 4. Press Start and hold A.
To start debugging, press B, then you can select any sprite in that level and put it on the screen. To select a different sprite, press A, and to place it on the screen, press C. Note that sprite selection is different from Zone to Zone. Also, instead of displaying the time elapsed, it displays the number of sprites currently on the screen.

-
No, he did it in the MegaDrive. With a game bought in a regular store.
Sorry, I must have f'ed up my memories. I usually do that a bit due to my weak memory.
-
It still could have been debug, that worked in retail versions and had some really weird looking effects.
-
I used to believe that if you entered a secret button sequence when you locked on Sonic & Knuckles with Sonic 1, you could play the original Sonic the Hedgehog as Knuckles.
-
@ribbitking17
are my childhood memories screwed up? lol
I have several memories of stuff that cant be true but I know it happened and other people saw it too!
In the game Chiki Chiki Boys on genesis I swear it use to be 2 player. My friends rember it being to player, my cousins rember it being two player, it was two player. Looking at the back of the game box and everything I can find on the web says it is and always has been single player. I remember having multiple strategies for 2 people, example there is a boss that is a dragon that spits out eggs that turn into baby dragons, strategy one player kills the eggs while the other kills the main boss. We had lots of different plans like this, it does not make sence!

Wiki says it's two player
The game takes the form of a scrolling platform/beat 'em up game, with the players controlling the characters of the twins. The game can be played alone (in which case only one of the twins is present), or with two players together controlling one twin each.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mega_Twins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mega_Twins)
Also that reminds me of another Dick Tracy one:
Junior Dick Tracy
The back of the box said 1~2 Players, but for the life of me I've never seen any evidence that Dick Tracy on Genesis supported 2 players. A friend told me that it DID have two player and that the second player could use Junior in the game, complete with his own weapons. Instead of a pistol he used a slingshot and instead of the Tommy Gun he used Cherry Bombs.
That was bullshit, but I still have no idea why the box says "1~2 Players".
-
This is reminding me how disappointed I was when I arrived home after buying GT5:Prologue and noticed the box said 1P only. Then I boot it up and BAM 2P splitscreen.
-
Pokemon

This!
also
You could get Mew by doing the missingno cheat and going to place where you got Mewtwo at an exact time and walking an exact amount of steps.... also, you could surf around the SS Ann if you didnt get in the beginning of the game to find mew.
You could make Lara Croft naked in Tomb Raider by entering a cheat
Mortal Kombat had a thing called Sextalities.... Yeah, what the hell was I thinking believing that!
I also once pressed a something on a Megadrive controller and opened up a level select menu on Sonic 3D I showed my brother but nobody else believed me... I still have no idea how I did it.
-
I remember the Lara Croft 'Nude Raider' rumours starting from CVG (I miss the old days of Sega Saturn Magazine and CVG....) April Fool's joke. They said that if you went all the way back to the start of the game after doing a certain thing and then tapped the buttons in the rythm of 'Wannabe' (!?) then she would lose her clothes.
Apparantly there WAS a way to unlock nude mode but it required like, 60 lines of code in an Action Replay cheat cart or something.
And I remember reading in Sega Megazone (another wonderful gaming magazine) that MKII was going to feature 'Nudalities' but it was considered too offensive. As they said: "But apparantly ripping someone's arms off isn't..."
-
Sonic turns into Super Sonic when he goes into water!
When Sonic R came out there were lots of TV commercials for it. And in between the various clips of footage there was one where Sonic ran into water, coincidently the next one had Super Sonic running. I can't remember quite well if it blended well, but I remember everyone at my school talking about how Sonic would turn into Super Sonic if you went underwater.
There was some rumors of a Mega Drive version of the game. I don't know were that came from.
-
In kindergarten I had a friend who claimed his brother had a Donkey Kong Game & Watch that grew a screen every time you beat a level, and if you got to the 10th level, the G&W would be ten screens tall. I called BS on it, but I did believe for a while that there could have been a kernal of truth to it, and that maybe there was a G&W that had three screens. :P
Also, that Dick Tracy 2 player always bugged me. I have the game and the Genny hooked up. I should see if there is any 2 player to be found.
-
When I was little I thought that if you turned the controller in racing games it would make you turn sharper.
-

I think it MUST be a typo on the box or something, I've never been able to get 2 players in any form on that game. Good luck though, please report back with your findings!
When I was little I thought that if you turned the controller in racing games it would make you turn sharper.
Years ahead of your time it seems. Predicting motion controls already.
-
When I was little I thought that if you turned the controller in racing games it would make you turn sharper.
I had two women roommates at one of the houses I lived at for a couple of years. They usually didn't play video games at all, but for some reason Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller really interested them and they began playing it a lot. They did just that with the controller, rotating it in addition to actually steering it with the thumbstick. I teased them about it and they said they knew it wasn't actually doing anything, but couldn't really help it. Within a week, though, they had become the best Crazy Taxi players I've ever seen. Talk about making some crazy money... they were amazing. Whatever works, I guess!
-
I think I still have that little Tetris thing.
Is it from Sega? White with blue buttons?

-
OH MY GOD MAN THAT WAS IT!
The Pocket Boy! I just looked at SEGA's letter and it exactly that one, except for the colors.
So it wasn't Sega related at all?
-
Nope, the local distributor just gave it away or something. I had a good time with that thing, I should find some batteries for it.
-
For many years myself and my friends all believed there was a cheat in Lara Croft 2 that made her nude... We searched for years for this...
-
No mention of 2 players on my copy of Dick Tracy. You guys sure you aren't hallucinating? Or maybe it was a region goof.

*brain exploding*
-
Clearly SEGA wanted to have one player control the d-pad while the other controlled A,B & C. It's the only solution!
...or a designer got lazy and used a template of another game that was 2 players, and forgot to make the change.
-
Maybe the game was only 2P in PAL territories?
How bout you both boot up the game and check it?
-
Theres no way it's 2p on mine. Menu is start and options, very bare bones. Still a great game. :D
-
Yeah, trust me Crackdude, when I was younger me and my old man tried everything we could think of to find the elusive 2 Player mode. It must be a mis-print on the case or something.
As Barry said, it's still a lot of fun, but ball breakingly hard.
-
Dick Tracy reminds me of Altered Beast (foreground) crossed with a 2D shooter (background). The concept is actually very original, I can't think of any other game that plays on two planes like Dick does.
Wasn't Dick Tracy as well as Ghostbusters developed by SEGA? Those are probably two of my favorite Genesis games. Those and Quack Shot, which was also developed by SEGA (AM7). :afroman:
-
Dick Tracy is one of the best genesis games... Its awesome.
I loved the whole idea of the side scroller and background fights.
And then later levels were you are in the police car and you have to duck and dodge around the car.
Awesome.
Oh and yes my copy always said 1-2 players and it was also the bane of my childhood.
